SEMA Show Exhibitors: Get your parts on more vehicles at the 2012 SEMA Show by offering products to builders through the Products for Project-Vehicle Builders list. The list is a simple way to connect manufacturers looking for additional product exposure at the SEMA Show with the builders who design and create the vehicles that grab the attention of media and buyers from around the world.

Product-placement opportunities such as these are so beneficial that manufacturers often offer products for free or at a greatly reduced rate. To participate in the list, access the Products for Project-Vehicle Builders form.

The latest addition to the list will be included each week in SEMA eNews, when available. The list is open to exhibitors of the 2012 SEMA Show only and is intended to build awareness for SEMA Show exhibitors and their products.

Not only do the TORA Fall Nationals Pinewood Drags provide a fun evening of camaraderie and networking, but proceeds from Pinewood racer “rentals” directly benefit SEMA Cares.

TORA Races for Kids at Fall Nationals Reception

TORA will once again host the Fall Nationals Pinewood Drags to benefit SEMA Cares as part of its annual Industry Awards Reception at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Reception attendees “rent” a Pinewood racer in exchange for a $20 donation to SEMA Cares and compete for the title of “Top Eliminator.”

“Last year, the Fall Nationals generated more than $3,500 for SEMA Cares,” said TORA Chairman George Lathouris of Keystone Automotive Operations. “All of which goes directly to the kids at Childhelp facilities and Victory Junction. We’re hoping to top that number again this year. Each Pinewood racer we bring to the event (more than 100) was built and signed by a child at one of the Childhelp facilities in Virginia or California. It brings the charity aspect of the event a little closer.”

Last year’s Top Eliminator champion was Wild Boar Products of Stanton, California. Can they be the first repeat winner in the history of the Fall Nationals? If you want to find out, the TORA Fall Nationals is scheduled for Wednesday evening, October 31, from 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m. in the Garden Patio North of the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Hilton). Pinewood racers sell out quickly; don’t be late!

Open Membership Meeting at SEMA Show

All ARMO members and their guests, and all restoration industry professionals, are invited to attend the ARMO Open Membership meeting at the SEMA Show. The meeting runs from 7:15 a.m.–9:00 a.m. in meeting room Pavilion 1 at the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton).

“It’s early in the morning, I know,” said ARMO Chairman Alex Tainsh of Parts Unlimited Interiors. “But we promise lots of hot coffee, and plenty of Danishes, bagels and the like to get you started on the right foot. The meeting agenda will be a bit less structured than in years past so that we can solicit more feedback and interaction with the members in attendance.”

The open meeting is perhaps the best opportunity for anyone in the restoration industry to interact with the ARMO Select Committee and industry peers and offer input on the direction of future ARMO projects.

Why ARMO?

Is your business involved in the restoration segment and not yet an ARMO member? In addition to direct access with its 275 restoration company members, the Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) provides a number of other benefits, including education and outreach for small businesses in the restoration market, product exposure through an annual New Products Showcase and collective support of the restoration hobby.

Top Reasons to Join ARMO:

  • Networking Opportunities: The primary strength of ARMO is its member companies. The organization provides multiple venues for ARMO members to interact and share ideas through its long-range planning meetings, new-products mixer at Spring Carlisle and the ARMO awards reception at the 2012 SEMA Show, as well as discussion groups on MySEMA and social media websites.
  • Education: The annual ARMO education seminars at the Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show bring industry leaders and experts together to share their real-world experience with small-business owners, providing tips and insights to help them grow their businesses. The ARMO Restoration Trademark Licensing Guide provides ARMO members with the basic forms needed to begin the process of getting products licensed by an original-equipment manufacturer. The licensing guide is available through the SEMA Education Institute.
  • Supporting Hobby Growth: ARMO recognizes the importance of the individual hobbyist to the industry and supports Collector Car Appreciation Day activities across the country. Every April, the ARMO New Products Showcase puts member company products directly in front of 100,000+ restoration enthusiasts each year at Spring Carlisle. In addition, ARMO’s “Take a Kid to a Car Show” (TKCS) program strives to get children involved in automotive hobbies at an early age. The interactive TKCS website provides information on how to get involved for kids and adults alike.

Contact ARMO’s staff liaison Jim Skelly at jimsk@sema.org for more information.

Goolsby Customs' Pinewood hot-rod entry, before and after.

Goolsby Customs Looks to Iconic Drag Racers for Inspiration

The 2012 Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Reception will include a live auction to support SEMA Cares and increase awareness for the third-annual HRIA Pinewood Builder’s Challenge. Fifteen well-known builders created one-of-a-kind miniature hot rods in the style of Pinewood derby cars. The cars were raced at the annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Races in Pomona, California. These cars will be on display at the annual SEMA Show and then 12 will be placed on eBay for auction from October 30–November 8, and three will be auctioned live. All proceeds from the auction will go to support SEMA Cares and its two children’s charities—Childhelp and Victory Junction.

We caught up with Josh Henning of Goolsby Customs.

Describe the inspirations behind the design of your pinewood car.

Our inspiration came from the old drag racers, such as Tony Nancy, Tommy Ivo and Don Garlits, and their wild paint jobs and overall look. These guys had style and helped transform fast cars into cool cars!

Describe some of the materials and resources you used to build your car.

We tried to build this Pinewood much like a kid in the ’60s would have (if they had access to a cool painter). The body was made from the wood out of the kit, then the other parts were just built from whatever else we could find. Sometimes it's good to leave all the modern niceties behind and get back to the ways they used to have to do it.

Why is it important for you to participate in the Pinewood Challenge?

The Pinewood challenge is important because of the huge honor of being recognized with all these great builders who are working together for charity. And come on, whose arm do you really have to twist to get someone to play with a toy car?

It was originally written by MPMC members, and by having it available online, the council hopes to continue that tradition by welcoming suggestions for changes or additional content.

You may access the Business Guidelines Manual through the MPMC link on the eLearning Center of SEI. If you have not done so already, simply enroll as an eLearner and you’ll be on your way. Enrollment takes only a few seconds, and helps SEI track use and engagement. If you have any questions, contact Jim Skelly at jimsk@sema.org.

Need Help Getting Your Product to Market?

The SEMA Show offers exhibiting companies an array of tools and resources to ensure that their experience delivers value at and beyond the Show. For manufacturers with an established or new product line, the challenge often becomes how to best take advantage of the notoriety and exposure the Show can bring by getting their products to market effectively and efficiently. Many companies utilize an in-house sales team to accomplish this, while others opt to partner with a professional manufacturers' representative.

For the latter, and for those evaluating their sales strategy, SEMA’s Manufacturers' Rep Council (MRC) supports the Manufacturers' Representative Matching program during the Show. Located in the Exhibitor Services Manual, the Manufacturers' Representatives Matching Form connects manufacturers to MRC reps looking for new product lines. The completed forms are kept secure in the Rep Center, where MRC members can review and contact participating manufacturers to schedule a meeting.

In order to take advantage of this program, forms must be received by October 12, 2012. Enroll now by completing the Manufacturers' Representatives Matching Form.

The SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women, featuring a ’13 Ford Mustang GT donated by Ford Motor Co., will be unveiled at this year’s SEMA Show. Pictured here are two Magnaflow employees installing a Magnaflow exhaust.

30 SEMA-Member Companies Supply Products for the
SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women

The all-female vehicle customization project known as the SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women, featuring a ’13 Ford Mustang GT donated by Ford Motor Co., is on target for the unveiling of winning design “High Gear” at this year’s SEMA Show, Tuesday, October 30, 2012. The vehicle, which was painted at L&G Enterprises and customized at Source Interlink Media’s headquarters in El Segundo, California, will be auctioned on eBay immediately following the reveal with proceeds slated for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Foundation—an organization dedicated to fostering the next generation of automotive aftermarket leaders and innovators.

Forty aftermarket manufacturers, retailers and suppliers provided more than 50 high-performance components for this historic all-female SEMA Mustang Build. Custom installations and vehicle modifications include an E-Force Supercharger System from Edelbrock; front and rear brakes from Wilwood; a complete coilover suspension from H&R; sway bars from Whiteline USA; an exhaust system from MagnaFlow; a stereo system from Kicker; P Zero tires from Pirelli and Forgeline GA1R wheels with a custom finish. In addition to the customization of a Ford Mustang GT by an all-female build team, many of the products donated to the build came from women-owned companies.

“It was amazing to experience the huge amount of support offered by the SEMA-member companies,” stated Susan Carpenter, SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN) product coordinator. “The response was overwhelmingly positive in support of the scholarship fund and to raise awareness of women in the automotive aftermarket. Many of the companies not only provided product at no charge, but also sent female representatives to install their product onsite.”

“From the beginning, we felt that the build would have a lot of great energy,” commented Lindy Jewell of H&R Special Springs. “I knew our suspension would be a perfect addition to this amazing project. We encourage and support these unique ideas to broaden aftermarket awareness.”

The SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women, scheduled for completion in late August, involves five primary teams and team leaders, including the Powertrain Team (JoAnn Bortles), Paint and Body Team (Theresa Contreras), Undercarriage Team (Mollie Lewis), Interior and Stereo System Team (Kristin Cline) and the Quality Assurance Team (Jennifer LaFever).

“Being a part of this project has been thrilling,” stated Coelette Chenier, marketing coordinator, MagnaFlow. “With the help of my team member, Laurie Paolone, I learned how to successfully install an exhaust system as well as several other products. Now, I feel like I can do anything, and someday I’m going to customize a vehicle of my own.”

WTC Offers Two SEMA Show Sessions for Wheel and Tire Professionals

On Monday, October 29, the Wheel & Tire Council (WTC) will present two sessions focused on improving your business. According to Kelly Austin, WTC education chair, “WTC’s focus in delivering educational content is to be timely, relevant and meaningful." In response to the membership's desire to address issues, such as marketing, emerging trends, TPMS and tire safety, the WTC will host two sessions Monday, October 29, from 2:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall room S227.

In “Turning REAL Trends into REAL Revenue,” President and Founder of Exsell Marketing Wayne Williams will share the latest trends in the wheel and tire industry. Williams has more than 30 years’ experience in the automotive aftermarket and is the “counter intelligence” columnist for Modern Tire Dealer. The presentation will incorporate an overview of Google Insights and how this powerful tool can benefit your business by understanding what people search for and how they are searching for your products and your competitors.

The second session, “Finishing the Plus-Sizing Job: Pressure, Labeling and TPMS,” will be presented by Dr. John W. Daws, Daws Engineering. Dr. Daws specializes in the analysis of tire failure and has published papers on the forensic analysis of tire separation and the fitment of plus-size tires to vehicles and its relationship to vehicle handling and stability. Guests will get an understanding of tire-pressure requirements in various plus-sizing alternatives, learn about the vehicle's pressure labeling to conform to DOT safety requirements and good business practices. Dr. Daws will also clarify the impact of tire pressure and labeling requirements with respect to TPMS.

To register, visit WTC Meeting and Presentation.

Join the SEMA Council Family

SEMA hosts 10 distinct councils and committees that represent focused niches within the specialty-equipment industry. These groups are comprised of elected volunteers (Select Committee) who guide and direct council activities while representing the membership at large. Although each council acts independently and represents a different segment, they are all focused on the betterment of the industry as a whole.

The value councils provide SEMA and the industry is beyond refute. It is inspiring to witness a diverse collection of company representatives, many of which are direct competitors, come together and develop educational, training, youth awareness and networking events that are, at the core, designed to give back and promote business. An equally important council function is to ensure that SEMA sustains a pulse on the industry and maintains a presence with its members.

The question is often asked, “Why should my company join a council?” The answer is simple. SEMA councils open the doors and provide you exposure to industry leaders, decision makers, trendsetters and a community of like-minded individuals who share your passion and desire to see business succeed and prosper. Once the doors are open, it is your responsibility to take advantage of the benefits by becoming actively involved.

  education
The 2012 SEMA Show education days feature several comprehensive conferences focused on specific topics, dozens of product trainings and more than 50 free sessions.

As the industry evolves and businesses seek to work smarter, the 2012 SEMA Show education days feature several comprehensive conferences focused on specific topics, dozens of product trainings and more than 50 free sessions.

“Cutting-edge education has always been a primary staple of the SEMA Show,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications and events. “As the industry's largest gathering, we bring leading experts to the SEMA Show to help the industry learn new skills and strategies.”

The educational program begins the day before the SEMA Show officially opens, making it easy for attendees to come in and take part in the program without interfering with time to meet with business partners. The seminars continue throughout the week, with courses taking place in the morning before the Show floor opens and during the day.

“We vary the offerings to make it as easy and convenient for Showgoers to participate in the seminars,” said MacGillivray.

Most of the seminars are available to Showgoers at no cost and focus on general industry business issues, including management, sales, customer service, online marketing, technology, app development and more. Courses available in niche-specific tracks, such as tires, wheels and tires, mobile electronics, and powersports, make it simple for professionals in the respective markets to identify the sessions that are most relevant to their needs.

New for 2012 is the Off-Road Success Center, presented by OMIX-Rugged Ridge, where attendees will learn all about the dynamic Jeep and off-road lifestyle market. The program features a cast of speakers and case studies as part of twice-daily business seminar series. Check out the seminar schedule, all available free of charge.

Additionally, many exhibiting manufacturers host product training seminars where participants can see and hear firsthand about a product's technical applications. While the product trainings take place throughout the week, more than 12 members of the Professional Restylers Organization (PRO) have joined together to present the Technical Skills & Training Conference (TSTC), Thursday, November 1. During the TSTC, attendees will take part in hands-on training sessions and demonstrations that cover critical growth markets, such as custom interiors, heated seats, mobile electronics, paint protection, window film, sunroofs and more. The product trainings taking place throughout the week and the TSTC are both available to Showgoers at no cost.

Topic-specific conferences are also available at a low cost. These programs target online marketing professionals, auto dealers and those in the collision-repair market.

“When businesses work smarter, the entire industry benefits,” said MacGillivray. “While the majority of our educational program is available to showgoers at no cost, there are a few exceptions. The fee-based programs are typically very comprehensive and are much more involved—and the cost still remains minimal.”

The SEMA Show is a trade-only event for the automotive specialty equipment industry. The event takes place Tuesday–Friday, October 30–November 2, 2012, in Las Vegas. Details about the SEMA Show education program is available at www.SEMAShow.com/education.
The all-new ’13 RAM 1500 SEMA Measuring Session will be held October 23, 2012, from 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. at QEK in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

The SEMA Mustang Build Powered By Women will debut in the Ford Motor Co. booth at the SEMA Show, Tuesday, October 30, at 10:00 a.m.

The SEMA Mustang Build Powered By Women, better known as “High Gear,” will debut in the Ford Motor Co. booth, Tuesday, October 30, at 10:00 a.m.—the opening day of the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The ’13 Mustang GT made national headlines during the summer when more than 40 women volunteered their time and expertise to customize the vehicle in less than two months. Immediately after the unveiling, the vehicle will be auctioned to raise money for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund. Details about the auction are available at www.sema.org/auctions.

“The SEMA Mustang Build is truly inspiring,” said Marla Moore, SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN) chair. “The SBN is honored to host this historic project. We’re now excited to unveil and share the final creation with the industry at the upcoming SEMA Show.”

The SBN launched the project to showcase the talented women of the automotive industry. With SEMA and Ford Motor Co. teaming up for the build, an additional 40-plus SEMA-member companies donated products and services, which include custom paint, customize wheels, a custom leather interior, high-performance suspension and a new supercharger autographed by industry legend Vic Edelbrock.

“This project could not have happened without the amazing support between SEMA, Ford Motor Co., Source Interlink Media, along with the many manufacturers who provided product for the Mustang and our awesome women build team members,” said Rose Kawasaki, SBN Vehicle Build Task Force chair.

“This project has confirmed the fact that there are a group of passionate female enthusiasts in the automotive industry, and this was an ideal undertaking to showcase the talent of women in our industry,” said Doug Evans, executive vice president for Source Interlink Media (SIM). SIM, which publishes dozens of leading automotive publications, including Hot Rod magazine, was an active partner in the SEMA Mustang Build, which hosted much of the build at its headquarters in El Segundo, California.

More information can be found on the SEMA Mustang Build website, or contact the vehicle build project manager—Senior Manager of Councils Bryan Harrison at BryanH@sema.org or 909-978-6691.

PRO Garage participants will take part in hands-on training sessions and demonstrations that cover critical growth markets, such as custom interiors, heated seats, mobile electronics, paint protection, window film, sunroofs and more.

As one of the industry's key market segments, the restyling industry is on track to make a strong presence at the 2012 SEMA Show taking place Tuesday–Friday, October 30–November 2, in Las Vegas.

The Restyling & Car Care Accessories area of the 2012 SEMA Show will feature more than 300 companies, including manufacturers of seat covers, dash covers, floor mats, sunroofs and much more.

“The restyling market focuses on the appearance of a vehicle,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications and events. “The industry is filled with products that enhance the styling and appearance of cars, trucks and SUVs. It really is the foundation of what we consider to be fashion for the automotive industry.”

Restyling is among the SEMA Show’s most active areas. The section has traditionally represented one of the SEMA Show’s top three largest sections, along with Racing & Performance; Trucks, SUVs & Off-Road; and Global Tire Expo – Powered by TIA. With 300-plus exhibitors confirmed for the 2012 Show, this year’s Show marks a record high for the restyling area.

“New car owners like to personalize their vehicles and make it their own,” said MacGillivray. “In addition, many vehicle owners are keeping their cars and trucks longer and often update the look with new seats or floor mats. It’s easy to see why there’s so much interest and activity in this market segment.”

As the number of exhibitors showcasing products in the area goes up, so does the interest from independent installers and restylers. Throughout SEMA Show week are a number of programs and activities specifically targeting restyling professionals.

Spearheaded by the Professional Restylers Organization (PRO)—a SEMA council—activities include a PRO Reception where industry professionals gather and network with one another. Also hosted by PRO is the PRO Garage. The all-new event is part of the Technical Skills & Training Conference (TSTC) taking place Thursday, November 1. Participants will take part in hands-on training sessions and demonstrations that cover critical growth markets, such as custom interiors, heated seats, mobile electronics, paint protection, window film, sunroofs and more.

The celebrated Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to Indianapolis 500 winners since 1936, will be on display at the Borg-Warner Turbo Systems booth (#21635) during the week of the 2012 SEMA Show.

The celebrated Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to Indianapolis 500 winners since 1936, will be on display at the Borg-Warner Turbo Systems booth (#21635) during the week of the 2012 SEMA Show. The trophy is rarely seen outside of its home at the race track.

The Borg-Warner Trophy made its debut in 1936 when it was presented to Louis Meyer. Meyer said, "Winning the Borg-Warner Trophy is like winning an Olympic medal."

Made of 110 pounds of sterling silver, the Borg-Warner Trophy originally cost $10,000 and is currently valued at $1.5 million. The trophy clearly reflects the "art deco" period of its creation during the ’30s. During the race, the Borg-Warner Trophy is displayed trackside. When the winner pulls into Victory Lane, the trophy is placed on the rear of the car behind the driver. This tradition dates back to 1911, when Ray Harroun won the race with an average speed of 74.602 miles per hour.

The Borg-Warner Trophy has appeared in several Hollywood movies, including To Please a Lady with Barbara Stanwyck and Clark Gable, and Winning with Paul Newman. In the latter, Paul Newman talks on the phone about his racing victory while standing in a phone booth with a scaled-down version of the trophy proudly tucked under his arm.

The trophy stands 5-ft., 6-in. tall. Guidelines for its creation stipulated that it must represent the spirit of world-class racing, be constructed of precious metal, and be of heroic proportions. The completed work was characterized by its luxurious use of geometric and stylized forms, including wings of victory "handles" on each side of the trophy to symbolize speed, and a Greek-like figure of a man waving the traditional checkered flag atop a silver dome.

The original trophy base was designed to display images of the faces of 80 Indy 500 winners. Two new bases have since been constructed to add more space—one in 1986, to provide space for 18 more faces, and one in 2004, adding capacity for winners through 2034.

"Chop Cut Rebuild" Online will provide a weekend-warriors' look at automotive repairs and upgrades. “Unlike the television series, where we show what can be done to a car, the web series will be about what is affordable and attainable for the average guy,” says Dan Woods, the executive producer and host of "Chop Cut Rebuild." According to the producers of the show, the new online web episodes feature simple and cost-effective projects using aftermarket bolt-on parts. The ccr.tv website will also be refurbished to showcase the new online series, as well as additional news and articles. The web videos will primarily focus on the installation and understanding of how to enhance a vehicle’s performance and appearance.

Must-See 2012 SEMA Show Features

Some of the Attractions at the World’s Greatest Automotive Show

The SEMA Show is the world’s largest automotive trade show, but it’s much more than that. It’s a museum, a looking glass into the future, a university, a carnival, a catalog of innovation, a media frenzy and an incubator for tomorrow’s industry leaders. In short, from Tuesday, October 30–Friday, November 2, it’s the place where every automotive professional should be and where every auto enthusiast wishes he or she could be.

From the moment the doors swing open until the last vehicle drives out on the roads leading out of Las Vegas, the SEMA Show is jam-packed with must-see vehicles, parts and programs. Here’s a partial list; keep your eyes open over the next few weeks for even more!

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows, Car Repair Show, Powersports Show, Tire Show Online Floorplan

Okay, so the online floor plan is technically not a part of the physical SEMA Show. But it’s the starting point for everything that follows. Use it to find exhibitors, track down display areas and map the most efficient path to the booths you need to visit. It even shows where the restrooms are, and you know that’s going to be important. Visit www.SEMAShow.com today, and click on the “Floorplan” link to get started.

The Exhibitor Manual

If your company is exhibiting at the SEMA Show, the online Exhibitor Manual is as important as the online floorplan. It holds the key to SEMA Show activities, deadlines, marketing opportunities, services and more. Go to www.SEMAShow.com/esm. Read and learn, save money, amaze your friends and attract buyers.

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows, Car Repair Show, Powersports Show, Tire Show Registration

The hot ticket for SEMA Show registration is also online. It’s the easiest and most cost-effective way for buyers to obtain credentials, and a badge permits the bearer to enter both the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX) and the SEMA Show. Online registration is only $25 through October 15, while fax or regular-mail registration is $50. Or you can wait to get to Vegas and pay $75 onsite (starting October 16). Online buyer registrants will receive their badges in the mail, while all media must pick up their badges at the Media Center, room S219 on the Skybridge, between the Central and South Halls. Preregistered media receive updates and press releases leading up to the Show. If you do wait to register onsite, you’ll do so at the new location in room N109 at the back of the Grand Lobby in the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC).

SEMA’s annual New Product Awards competition recognizes outstanding achievements in the development of products being introduced to the automotive specialty-equipment market at the SEMA Show. The award winners will be announced on Tuesday, November 1, from 7:30 a.m.–8:45 a.m. at the New Products Awards Breakfast.

The SEMA Award honors vehicle models that specialty-equipment manufacturers believe are the best platforms for accessorization and that showcase the year’s coolest products. The SEMA Award recognizes one model in each of four categories: “Hottest Car,” “Hottest Sport Compact Car,” “Hottest Truck,” and “Hottest 4x4-SUV.” It also underscores the cooperative relationship between the automakers and SEMA-member companies.

“As the visionaries and innovators of the industry, our SEMA Show exhibitors determine the winners of the SEMA Award based on the vehicles they showcase in their booths,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “With each booth vehicle representing one vote, the most prominent models in each category are the winners. The SEMA Award celebrates these outstanding vehicles that emerge each year at the Show.”

The SEMA Award presentations for 2012 will take place at the Vehicle Technology Center in the Grand Lobby of the LVCC immediately following the conclusion of the New Products Breakfast at approximately 8:45 a.m.

Rep Technology Roundtable

On Sunday, October 28, from 3:30 p.m.–6:00 p.m. at the LVH (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton) attendees at the Rep Technology Roundtable (exclusively for reps) will learn how to take advantage of a technological economy and become more profitable. Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows, Car Repair Show, Powersports Show, Tire Show Built From eBay

Here’s a different spin on the project-car theme: eBay, in association with Source Interlink Media (SIM), has partnered with four garages to build four distinctly different vehicles. As the four are being completed, they are being voted on by visitors to a build-specific website (www.builtfromebay.com), where they will ultimately choose their favorite. When the vehicles are completed, they will be auctioned off on eBay, and the proceeds will go to four affiliated charities. The unique caveat is that each vehicle was purchased on eBay and all of the parts—vintage and new alike—were also acquired on eBay.

The campaign is called Built From eBay. Team captains from the four SIM publications selected the four garages, said Matt Boice, vice president of the Enthusiast Media Group of Source Interlink Media. Hot Rod magazine selected Mackey’s Hot Rods in Huntington Beach, California, to complete a ’68 Chevrolet G20 Van supporting The Semper Fi Fund. Four Wheeler selected Off Road Evolution in Fullerton, California, to build its ’70 Grand Cherokee Commando supporting the California Trail Users Coalition. European Car chose GSR Autosport in Lake Forest, California, to build a ’84 Porsche 911 supporting SEMA Cares. And Lowrider chose Duran’s Quality Painting in Baldwin Park, California, to complete a ’66 Chevrolet El Camino supporting the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Built From eBay display and all its exciting features can be found at the outdoor front Silver Lot, within the DUB Live area.

Auto Apps Conference

The SEMA Automotive App Developers Conference will take place in the Vehicle Technology Center in the Grand Lobby of the LVCC starting at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31. The conference is designed to attract the attention of technology providers, connect them with specialty-equipment manufacturers and help to generate new business opportunities for the industry. This event, which will highlight the SEMA Show as the focal point for vehicle connectivity, will include presentations from OE engineers, telematics and communications providers and specialty aftermarket suppliers. Attendees will include application developers from the leading technology firms in the United States
and abroad.

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows, Car Repair Show, Powersports Show, Tire Show Ideas Alive

The Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase is the number-one SEMA Show buyer and media destination. It totals more than 25,000 sq. ft. of innovation and opportunity, and it’s where SEMA Show exhibitors’ best product ideas come alive. This year, the New Products Showcase will be housed in the east end of the upper level of the LVCC’s South Hall. In addition, the First-Time and Featured Exhibitors Section that debuted at last year’s SEMA Show will return in 2012 and will be located alongside the Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase. With more than 2,000 manufacturers exhibiting throughout the SEMA Show, the First-Time and Featured Exhibitors section serves as an easy and convenient location for buyers to hone in on hundreds of new and emerging manufacturers who are exhibiting at the Show for the first time.

“Buyers and media often make the New Products Showcase their first stop, visiting the area even before the Show opens on Tuesday morning,” said Peter MacGillivray SEMA vice president of communications and events. “Visitors will note the products that interest them in the Showcase and create a list of exhibitors that they want to visit. This often becomes their plan for the week.”

Legendary vehicle designer Chip Foose will be making appearances at Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase. Be sure to watch for further announcements and schedules.

Overhaulin’ Studio

After a hiatus of several years, the “Overhaulin’” television show returns on the Discovery Channel with Chip Foose. The crew will also return to the SEMA Show to film a new episode with Foose and co-hosts Chris Jacobs and Jessie Combs. True to the “Overhaulin’” premise, they will “steal” a car from an unsuspecting victim, then source products from SEMA Show exhibitors as they remake the vehicle over the course of the SEMA Show week, culminating in a surprise reveal. The “Overhaulin’” studio will be located in the alcove at the front of the Trucks, SUVs & Off-Road Section in the LVCC South Hall. Keep an eye out for further developments.

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows, Car Repair Show, Powersports Show, Tire Show Silent Auction and Hot Rod Heritage Art Exhibit

Two other popular features that return this year are the SEMA Silent Auction and the Hot Rod Heritage Art Exhibit, which will be run by recent SEMA Hall of Fame inductee Bob Larivee Sr. As always, the auction will feature dozens of pieces of memorabilia, art and unique apparel. In fact, some of the artists whose work will be displayed in the Hot Rod Heritage Art Exhibit have donated pieces to the auction, which will benefit the SEMA Cares charity. Both displays will be housed just upstairs from the Grand Lobby in front of the Members’ Lounge outside the
North Hall.

All that plus one of the largest exhibition spaces in the LVCC, which will be filled with newly completed project cars and the hottest
GM products.

High school teams from across the country will compete for the national championship title by tearing down and rebuilding identical high-performance 350ci Chevrolet small-block engines fitted with top performance parts. Tailored after the efforts that go on between rounds of drag races throughout the country, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow “Showdown at SEMA” is the culmination of eight preliminary competitions around the nation, each of which will send a regional champion to Las Vegas. The final tale will be told by the team with the fastest time and the least number of penalty points. Look for the final rounds this year on the outside plaza in front of the Central Hall near the Car Crazy Studio.

Car Crazy Studio

And speaking of car crazy, The Car Crazy Studio has become a staple attraction at the SEMA Show, with host Barry Meguiar interviewing industry legends and celebrities on an elevated stage on the outside plaza in front of the LVCC. The interviews are broadcast live on screens throughout the convention center and have featured such NASCAR luminaries as Jack Roush and Robby Gordon and industry captains, such as Pete Chapouris, George Barris and Myles Kovacs. You never know who might turn up, so pay attention!

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows, Car Repair Show, Powersports Show, Tire Show Ford Out Front

Ford will again feature its current crop of star drivers and racing vehicles in the Ford Out Front exhibition just outside the halls of the LVCC. The Ford Out Front experience will showcase Ford high-performance drivers performing drifting, Gymkhana and freestyle demonstrations in Ford high-performance products. In 2011, Ford brought drivers Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Ken Block to the SEMA Show, and the program is slated to be just as exciting for 2012. Be there for driving demonstrations by drifting masters.

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows, Car Repair Show, Powersports Show, Tire Show Mopar Alley

The best way to navigate between the east end of Central and South Halls is through Mopar Alley—a show within the Show featuring some of the hottest cars, trucks and parts available from Mopar, including some of the best examples from the original musclecar era. In 2011, the Challenger was a highlight vehicle. When you’re ready to transition from hall to hall, be sure to take a stroll through this Chrysler memory lane and glimpse into the future with a collection of Mopar, Dodge, Fiat and Chrysler vehicles.

The SEMA Show is undoubtedly a highlight of the year for the industry, but the highlight for the local populace is the SEMA Cruise, a feature that was introduced last year. At the conclusion of the Show, as the booths are dismantled and the products are packaged for shipment home, the display cars are driven out of the convention center. While this parade of rolling art has always been highly anticipated, it became an official part of the Show in 2011.

When the SEMA Show officially ends at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, the SEMA Cruise begins. With the Show’s carpets rolled up, you’ll want to stick around to see this one last automotive blast.

Featuring awards, giveaways, entertainment and even seating for the crowds who throng to view the hundreds of vehicles, the parade will once again conclude a Show full of must-see features like the many highlighted above.

Going Mobile on the Cheap

Making Your Website Mobile-Friendly for $100 or Less

There are scores of mobile template providers and conversion services that can now make your website mobile-ready for $100 or less.

Businesses looking to quickly establish a mobile-friendly presence on the web can take heart: There are scores of mobile template providers and conversion services that can now make your website mobile-ready for $100 or less. The nine out of 10 small businesses that still do not have optimized mobile sites because of technical or financial restraints now have the means to build their own professional-looking, brand-identical mobile sites at rock-bottom rates, said Ben Seslija, CEO of bMobilized.

Once a passing consideration, going mobile is now considered imperative for businesses looking to stay abreast of the unbridled popularity of tablets, smartphones and other handheld computerized devices—all of which demand websites designed for small screens. Indeed, according to eMarketer, there will be 54.8 million tablet users in the United States by the close of 2012 and 89.5 million by 2014. All told, 234 million Americans 13 and older were using mobile devices in April 2012, and 107 million of those people were using smartphones, according to Comscore.

Instead of building a mobile-friendly website from the ground up, many businesses simply opt for mobile website templates, which can be easily customized by adding text and images to pre-configured layouts. Among the easiest to use of this ilk are templates offered by AllwebCo Design. AllwebCo makes templates that can be quickly customized with a simple text editor, such as MS Notepad, with no web authoring software required. The company’s basic mobile website templates start at about $21; more sophisticated versions run $125 or more.

Similar template providers include Template Monster and Artisteer. Plus, businesses that are using the Wordpress platform can find scores of mobile-friendly Wordpress templates for as little as $8 at template clearinghouse sites such as Themeforest and Code-canyon.

Meanwhile, there are also a number of “gee-whiz” conversion services on the web that will convert any traditional website on the fly for anyone willing to type in their website address and press “Enter.” Essentially, these self-service online providers attempt to grab the essential data, colors and design elements of your website and then re-display them in a mobile-friendly form—usually in a matter of seconds. Subsequently, you’re presented with a number of online tools that you can use to tweak the resulting design to your taste and preference. Most of the services also offer free analytics with their packages, so you can track customer activity on your new mobile website. And many offer tools that allow you to effortlessly add mobile-specific features, such as click-to-call and mobile-friendly videos.

Seslija’s bMobilized service, for example, offers to do an initial on-the-fly conversion of your website in under 30 seconds. Subsequently, you’re able to use online tools to edit, create or replace menus, tweak your logo, customize headers and footers, drop in advertising and perform similar tweaks to ensure that your mobile site is just right. Trial use is free, and there’s a monthly $9 charge for customers who want to continue the service with tech support.

One of the coolest features of bMobilized is that it automatically updates the mobile version of your website any time you update your traditional website. Similar services are offered by Google’s GOMO, which is free for the first year and then $108 yearly, and Duda Mobile, which costs $9 monthly for the ad-free version.

Besides deciding on a template or an online service provider, one of the key considerations in going mobile is determining if you’ll leave your traditional web presence provider behind. While many mobile presence providers would have you abandon your traditional website design altogether, other web marketing analysts say that businesses may want to stick with a traditional website for people cruising the web on 24-in. or larger screens and then offer a scaled-down, mobile alternative for tiny-screen fans.

Once you’ve made that call, you’ll want to consider these top 10 best practices of mobile web design, as recommended by Google GOMO:

deegan
Brian Deegan and Tanner Foust will participate in the championship race at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Tuesday, October 30.

Brian Deegan Within Grasp of Global Rallycross Championship Title After Fifth-Round Race
Motocross athlete and Metal Mulisha founder Brian Deegan narrowed the gap for the crown in the Global Rallycross Championship (GRC) series last weekend, finishing second place in the latest race. After dropping the lowest race score in the series, Deegan is only six points shy of teammate and rival Tanner Foust in grasping the title.

In Round 5 of the GRC, Deegan’s second-place finish seats him in the second-place position overall in the series. Deegan claimed a heat race win and extra bonus points to put him within striking distance of the championship title. With 66 points total, after dropping the lowest race score, Deegan’s six-point deficit to Foust’s 72 creates a season-ending duel for the Championship October 30.

After realizing the narrow point gap between himself and Tanner, Deegan stated, “It all comes down to me and Tanner at the SEMA Show, and this is where a champion will be decided, at the biggest platform in the auto industry.”

The GRC Championship title is in reach for Deegan or Foust to claim; the latest round set the stage for too large a point differentiation for any other participant to win. The championship race will take place at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Tuesday, October 30, and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

future vehicles, spy photos, car spy shots, porsche panamera

With the next-generation Porsche Panamera planned for the ’16 model year, the automaker is attempting to freshen the current version with a facelift for the ’14 model. These photos, shot and delivered by the pro shooters at Brenda Priddy & Co., reveal a cleverly camouflaged Panamera prototype with headlamps hidden behind body-colored panels and adhesive headlamp coverings.

In addition to hiding the actual lamps and design of the headlights, Priddy reports that parts of the Panamera's front fascia were also cleverly disguised.

Based on the size and shape of the camouflage, the team reported that it would not be surprised if the freshened Panamera resembles—headlamp and fascia wise—the future signature-look of the Panamera Sport Turismo Concept recently introduced in Paris. The team also expects the taillights to be freshened in the mid-cycle update.

Based on the Veloster, Hyundai's Velocity Concept features a host of additions, including HRE wheels, a lower body kit, a rear diffuser, an oversized rear wing, Brembo four-piston calipers and two-piece rotors, Blistein springs and Kumho tires.

Hyundai America's design and technical center has created a factory-tuner concept named "Velocity" based on its Veloster sport coupe. The Velocity concept will debut at the 2012 SEMA Show.

Hyundai says that Velocity maintains the silhouette of the original Veloster, but features a host of aggressive factory-racer design additions, including HRE wheels, a lower body kit, a rear diffuser, an oversized rear wing and #1 racecar design graphic.

"In creating Velocity, we were inspired to take the Veloster's original concept strengths to their fullest expression," said Chris Chapman, head of Hyundai's Irvine, California, design center. "Velocity gave out design and engineering teams license to take Veloster far beyond everyday production car limitations."

Hyundai reports that Velocity boasts more than 400 hp and 350 lb.-ft. of torque.

In addition the the engine modifications, Velocity also features Brembo four-piston calipers and two-piece rotors, Blistein springs with monotube dampers, and Kumho Ecsta SPT 275/35R19 high-performance summer tires.

Pirelli World Challenge Champion Paul Brown Succumbs to Cancer
Champion race-car driver Paul Brown of Covina, California, passed away last Saturday morning after battling cancer. He was 43.

Highlighted by the 2011 Pirelli World Challenge GTS Drivers’ Championship, Brown started his racing career in 1992 in SCCA Club Racing. He made his first SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge start in 1993 at Des Moines, and would run another 41 races through the 2000 season before taking a hiatus from the series. After a handful of starts in 2008–2009, Brown returned for a full slate in with his Tiger Racing/Paul Brown Racing Ford Mustang Boss 302S in 2011.

At the season-opening round at St. Petersburg, Brown earned his first-career pole position and followed that with a win at Long Beach. Brown would win four more times in 2011 en route to a dominating Drivers’ Championship.

Following the season, Brown was diagnosed with an aggressive melanoma and began undergoing treatment. The team signed Justin Bell to drive the No. 50 Mustang for 2012 in Brown’s absence. With Bell unable to attend the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (Mosport) event in June due to a scheduling conflict, Brown returned to the driver’s seat for what would turn out to be the final time. Battling side effects from the cancer treatment, Brown raced to a pair of top-10 finishes, highlighted by a fourth-place run on Saturday.

Brown married fellow World Challenge driver Carol Hollfelder in 2005. The couple each came from a racing family. Brown’s father is renowned Mustang tuner Kenny Brown, and Hollfelder’s father, Tom, has been a fixture in North American vintage racing scene for many years and also previously competed in World Challenge. Outside of the driver’s seat, Brown managed the shop at Tiger Racing.

Service arrangements are not yet available.

Justin Pawlak, piloting the Falken Tire Ford Mustang, qualified second at the Formula Drift season finale.

Team Falken Takes a Pair of Silvers
The Formula Drift season finale “Title Fight” held in Southern California’s “House of Drift,” Irwindale Speedway, saw Team Falken’s Vaughn Gittin Jr., yield to second place in this year’s Driver’s Championship, while teammate Justin Pawlak, also a contender for the overall win, earned second place in the night’s final round, losing to the 2012 champion, Daigo Saito.

Pawlak, piloting the Falken Tire Ford Mustang, qualified second, while Gittin Jr., was in ninth, with teammates Daijiro Yoshihara in 17th and Darren McNamara in 30th. Both Gittin Jr., and Pawlak advanced to the Top 16. However, after a lengthy “half-time,” Gittin Jr., was defeated by Pat Mordaunt while Pawlak advanced after defeating Ryan Tuerck. Competitor Saito took the win in the final round. Pawlak ended up in fourth in the 2012 Driver Championship while Defending Formula D Champion “Dai” Yoshihara finished in seventh.

Hotchkis Sport Suspension's new Scion FR-S project car clocked the quickest time of the day at 86Fest.

Hotchkis Clocks Fastest Time at 86Fest Autocross
At the famed Auto Club Speedway, Hotchkis Sport Suspension's new Scion FR-S project car clocked the quickest time of the day. 86Fest brought Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ owners together with fans of the original “AE86” Toyota Corolla (the new cars’ spiritual predecessor) for a car show and autocross competition. Team Hotchkis joined in on the festivities and competed in the autocross competition with its own FR-S project vehicle.

Driven by Hotchkis Chief Engineer Aaron Ogawa, the Hotchkis FR-S repeatedly produced quicker lap times that were seconds ahead of any FR-S or BRZ. According to Hotchkis, while the average FR-S/BRZ on stock tires could trip the lights at around 42 seconds, the more modified cars could do it in 38 to 40 seconds. The Hotchkis FR-S, however, was consistently completing laps in the 36-second range and set a best time of 35.58 seconds.

The car’s handling advantage stems from a combination of the new Hotchkis Sport Suspension package, which includes sport coil springs, front and rear adjustable sport sway bars with upgraded end links, front sport caster/camber plates and the front sport strut tower brace. For additional speed, the Hotchkis FR-S is also equipped with a PST carbon-fiber driveshaft, Magnaflow Exhaust and a Takeda cold air intake.

The Hotchkis FR-S and a complete Hotchkis Sport Suspension system will be on display in Hotchkis booth #21261 at the upcoming 2012 SEMA Show.

  golden nugget
The Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino and The Plaza Hotel & Casino have undergone extensive renovations and have been added to the official block for this year's Show.

While many hotels around Las Vegas are filling up quickly, there are a few hotels still offering discounted rates through SEMA’s official housing website.

New this year, SEMA has included two of the most luxurious hotels downtown in the official block, which means affordable options and complimentary shuttle transportation provided by SEMA from the hotels to the SEMA Show. Both properties have recently completed extensive renovations and expansions, providing quality hotels at deeply discounted prices.

  • Golden Nugget: as low as $85 per night.
  • Plaza Hotel: as low as $65 per night.

Meanwhile, on the Strip, SEMA still has rooms available at three different hotels each offering varied options that will fit whatever you prefer. From a luxurious, non-gaming property, to mega-resorts in the heart of the Strip, as well as a more economical option, there is something for everyone. Below are the remaining properties still available on the Strip:

  • Circus Circus: As low as $65 per night.
  • Planet Hollywood: As low as $150 per night.
  • TI: As low as $153 per night.

When comparing prices, be sure to verify if a particular property charges a resort fee and what the fee may be. While it can significantly increase the final rate one pays, these fees include wireless Internet and fitness center access at most properties.

If you have any questions about booking your hotels for the SEMA Show, don’t hesitate to contact Travel Planners—SEMA’s Official Housing Bureau—at 800-221-3531or e-mail res@tphousing.com.

Parking at the SEMA Show—Plan Ahead

The SEMA Show is going to be bigger than ever, with activities and displays taking over much of the parking lots on and around the Las Vegas Convention Center. One particular parking lot, the Gold Lot, will be closed for all parking beginning the week prior to the SEMA Show until Wednesday of the Show due to the Global Rallycross taking place the evening of October 30. Therefore, it is important you plan ahead if you intend to park or stage a vehicle or truck at the SEMA Show. SEMA will continue to offer complimentary shuttle service to more than 30 partner hotels. SEMA and the Las Vegas Convention Center have also secured an additional parking lot nearby for overflow parking, just north on Paradise Road across the street from the Las Vegas Hotel. Complimentary shuttle service also will be provided from that parking lot. Meanwhile, the monorail is a great option for commuting to the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Registration for Badges is Still Open

While the deadline may have passed to have your badges mailed in advance to your office, it is not too late to register your staff for their badges. At this point, any registrations made will have badges waiting for you at the Exhibitor Registration onsite location, which this year is located in the meeting rooms behind the Grand Lobby, or more specifically, Room N109. Also note that while the deadline for early-bird attendee registration has passed, complimentary Exhibitor badges are still determined according to your allotment and any badges requested over and above your allotment are $25 each.

SEMA’S Official Housing Bureau Continues to Offer Great Rates to the Show

While many hotels around Las Vegas are filling up quickly, there are a few hotels still offering discounted rates through SEMA’s official housing website. SEMA is also pleased to offer two great options at two incredible and recently upgraded properties downtown at the Golden Nugget and the Plaza Las Vegas.

  • Golden Nugget: As low as $85 per night.

Deadline to Receive Freight at the Advance Warehouse: October 19

Friday, October 19 (tomorrow), is the deadline for freight to arrive in advance. After that date, freight must arrive at the Las Vegas Convention Center directly according to a specific schedule. Each exhibitor is assigned a target time, which is the time for your freight to arrive at the SEMA Show. You can find all target times in the bottom left corner of the Exhibitor Manual page on www.SEMAShow.com. Answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding freight delivery and when/how your freight should come to the Las Vegas Convention Center is answered on the informational sheet, which is the last link located on the left column of the Exhibitor Manual. Bringing a Vehicle to Display at the Show? Understand the Process and Differences for Booth Vehicles and Feature Vehicles Before You Arrive

Vehicles are all around the SEMA Show, and it is oftentimes confusing to understand the differences between booth vehicles and feature vehicles, and when they can be placed. Booth vehicles are those that are located inside an exhibitor’s actual booth. These can be displayed whenever an exhibitor is ready to place it in their booth. There is no specific date or time the vehicle can enter the exhibit hall; it can simply go directly to the nearest freight door and Freeman will help escort the vehicle to the booth at no charge. Feature vehicles are those vehicles sponsored by exhibitors that are placed in and around the convention center property, yet not in an exhibitor’s booth. Placement of feature vehicles is determined according to confirmations previously sent to the exhibitors when applications were submitted for feature vehicles. Most vehicles will be placed Sunday, October 28, from one check-in location in the Green Lot. Each confirmation has a check-in time, and all vehicles must proceed directly to the Green Lot entrance off of Desert Inn Road, just east of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Any questions, e-mail featurevehicle@convexx.com.

Las Vegas Monorail Offers e-Ticket Option for Last-Minute Ticket Purchases

All monorail tickets purchased today up until the Show will be e-mailed with an eTicket barcode, which can be redeemed at the eTicket kiosks located on all monorail stations. Las Vegas Monorail riders can travel to and from the SEMA Show and the Las Vegas Strip in 15 minutes or less, with direct access to the Las Vegas Convention Center and many of the city’s most popular restaurants, shows, shops, casinos and resorts. Bryant Sanchez, Exotik Auto Werkz

For more than two decades, Sanchez has been pushing the envelope using every possible tool at his disposal to design, fabricate and custom paint some of the coolest and wildest machines in South Florida, and as far reaching as the opposite end of the world. As a Miami-native gear head, art and cars ran through his blood. At the age of 19, he decided he would develop a niche of not only crafting such ideas into reality, but also offering an avenue where other customs and rods could be repaired, since most people take their cookie-cutter cars to the dealer for service. More than two decades later, and after taking a major blow when the economy tanked, Sanchez is back at what he genuinely adores, breathing life back into lost relics of time and restoring or rebuilding them with a twisted attitude for the road. There's never been a dull moment in this ambitious, crafty and talented designer's career, and he can honestly say he's laid paint, candy and graphics on everything from fire hydrants to jet skis. As founder of Exotik Auto Werkz, he's made a new name and standard for quality custom automotive design, fabrication and repair.

future vehicles, spy photos, car spy shots, Nissan Leaf

Automotive News recently reported that Nissan will offer a lower-priced version of the Leaf for the ’13 model year—and the pro shooters at Brenda Priddy & Co. report that this model should reach dealerships late in the first quarter of 2013.

The team spotted the very first of the less-expensive Leaf on the road this week. While it may not look much different to the general bystander, there were obvious differences upon looking closer.

The so-called ’13-model facelift appears to be modified headlights in the same headlamp assembly, according to Priddy. The design provides more of a streamlined look, and it appears the more expensive LEDs are gone in favor of more traditional bulbs that are less expensive.

Priddy's team also points to other cost-saving items on the Leaf, including the new “hubcaps,” while the previously standard cruise control appears to be absent from this model. There are also changes in the center of the dash, but Priddy reports that those were securely covered to prevent onlookers from seeing the updates. And, while it may be a minor tweak, the black cloth interior will also be a new offering for 2013.

All California automobile service providers are required to check tire pressures for every vehicle being repaired at their facility as of September 2010. The law applies to auto maintenance/repair providers but not to auto parts distributers/retailers, auto body/paint facilities, auto glass installers or wreckers/dismantlers. California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that removes tire age as a reason to deny checking a vehicle’s tire pressure. The law recognizes that there is no national tire aging standard and therefore referencing tire age in a California regulation creates liability exposure to the service and repair industry.

Under the law, service providers are required to inflate the tires to the recommended tire pressure rating using a gauge that is accurate within 2 psi. The service provider has the right to refuse to check the pressure if the tire is “unsafe” (example: excessive tread wear) or damaged (example: crack, bulge or ply separation). The provider must note on the invoice that the tire inflation service was completed and then keep a copy of the service invoice for at least three years. The customer may decline the check if the customer affirms that a check had already been done within the last 30 days, or they will have it checked within the next seven days. The rule applies to all vehicles weighing less than 10,000 lbs.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has updated its “Green Guides,” which are intended to help marketers avoid misleading environmental claims. The Guides were first issued in 1992, but have not been revised since 1998. The Guides cover: 1) general principles that apply to all environmental marketing claims; 2) consumer perception of claims and marketing substantiation of claims; and 3) avoiding consumer deception.

Marketing studies have found that most consumers think a “green” product is recyclable, biodegradable, made from recycled materials or made with renewable materials. Since very few products have all of these attributes, the FTC’s Guide revisions are intended to clarify and limit the claims. The revised guides include new sections on renewable materials claims, “green” certifications and seals of approval, non-toxic claims, renewable energy claims and carbon offsets. They also clarify existing categories, such as recyclable and ozone-safe.

SEMA-supported legislation to provide a 10-year emissions inspection exemption for vehicles never before registered in Pennsylvania or any other jurisdiction was approved by the Senate. The bill now moves to the House Transportation Committee. Current law only exempts new vehicles that have less than 5,000 miles on their odometer for one year after their first registration.

The bill acknowledges that it is senseless to test newer vehicles, the results of which demonstrate no significant air-quality benefits. The idea behind exempting any class of vehicles is to reduce costs while not losing appreciable emissions reductions. This strategy builds support for emissions-inspection programs, but also directs finite resources to where they will be most valuable in cleaning the air. The measure still requires that the newest 10 model-year vehicles be subject to visual anti-tampering inspections for the presence of emissions-control components installed on the vehicle by manufacturers.

For details, visit the SEMA Action Network (SAN) website. For more information, contact Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org.

SEMA's Government Affairs Office has compiled a comprehensive guide on how motor-vehicle parts are regulated by the federal government, which can be viewed at www.sema.org/fedregs. It is a must-read document for every SEMA member.

The guide is generally presented in a Q&A format, with links to online resources for more information. Topics include an overview of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, emissions standards (EPA and California) and special sections on lighting equipment, wheels and tires and fuel economy. The guide also answers questions, such as: Is my company required to register with the NHTSA? What are my obligations as an importer? What is self-certification? Is “DOT-approved” a legal term? How is lighting equipment regulated by the federal and state government? Where can I download NHTSA rules and regulations?

To learn more about the SEMA government affairs efforts and how your company can stay current with federal and state laws and regulations, contact Stuart Gosswein at stuartg@sema.org.
