Open Membership Meeting at SEMA Show

All ARMO members and their guests, and all restoration industry professionals, are invited to attend the ARMO Open Membership meeting at the SEMA Show. The meeting runs from 7:15 a.m.–9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 in meeting room Pavilion 1 at the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton).

“It’s early in the morning, I know,” said ARMO Chairman Alex Tainsh of Parts Unlimited Interiors. “But we promise lots of hot coffee, and plenty of Danishes, bagels and the like to get you started on the right foot. The meeting agenda will be a bit less structured than in years past so that we can solicit more feedback and interaction with the members in attendance.”

The open meeting is perhaps the best opportunity for anyone in the restoration industry to interact with the ARMO Select Committee and industry peers and offer input on the direction of future ARMO projects.

Why ARMO?

Is your business involved in the restoration segment and not yet an ARMO member? In addition to direct access with its 275 restoration company members, the Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) provides a number of other benefits, including education and outreach for small businesses in the restoration market, product exposure through an annual New Products Showcase and collective support of the restoration hobby.

Top Reasons to Join ARMO:

  • Networking Opportunities: The primary strength of ARMO is its member companies. The organization provides multiple venues for ARMO members to interact and share ideas through its long-range planning meetings, new-products mixer at Spring Carlisle and the ARMO awards reception at the 2012 SEMA Show, as well as discussion groups on MySEMA and social media websites.
  • Education: The annual ARMO education seminars at the Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show bring industry leaders and experts together to share their real-world experience with small-business owners, providing tips and insights to help them grow their businesses. The ARMO Restoration Trademark Licensing Guide provides ARMO members with the basic forms needed to begin the process of getting products licensed by an original-equipment manufacturer. The licensing guide is available through the SEMA Education Institute.
  • Supporting Hobby Growth: ARMO recognizes the importance of the individual hobbyist to the industry and supports Collector Car Appreciation Day activities across the country. Every April, the ARMO New Products Showcase puts member company products directly in front of 100,000+ restoration enthusiasts each year at Spring Carlisle. In addition, ARMO’s “Take a Kid to a Car Show” (TKCS) program strives to get children involved in automotive hobbies at an early age. The interactive TKCS website provides information on how to get involved for kids and adults alike.

Pinewood Builder Awarded Best in Show

Jesse Greening of Greening Auto Co. was awarded the coveted “Best in Show” designation from the Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) for the 2012 HRIA Builder’s Challenge and Pinewood races. Fifteen well-known builders created one-of-a-kind miniature hot rods in the style of pinewood derby cars. The cars were raced at the annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Races in Pomona, California. These cars will be on display at the annual SEMA Show and then 12 will be placed on eBay for auction from October 30–November 8, and three will be auctioned live. All proceeds from the auction will go to support SEMA Cares and its two children’s charities—Childhelp and Victory Junction.

Greening’s custom build will be one of the three auctioned live during the HRIA Industry Reception, Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at the Las Vegas Hotel in Ballrooms A and B. Joining Greening for the live auction will be Mike Cooper of Spanky’s Hot Rod & Customs, who received “Best Engineered” honors, and three-time race winner Derek White of Street Vizions. The live auction will immediately precede the Awards Presentation, emceed by the voice of the NHRA and SEMA, Dave McClelland. The night will honor the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association’s Trendsetter, the National Street Rod Association’s Achievement Award, the International Car Show Association’s Legends of Hot Rod Award, as well as the prestigious Industry Recognition of an Individual, Business of the Year and Hall of Fame honors from SEMA’s hot-rod council—HRIA.

Be sure and join HRIA for this special evening that will honor the hot-rodding industry and help support a great cause by participating in the live auction. RSVP today!

Not only do the TORA Fall Nationals Pinewood Drags provide a fun evening of camaraderie and networking, but proceeds from Pinewood racer “rentals” directly benefit SEMA Cares.

TORA Races for Kids at Fall Nationals Reception

TORA will once again host the Fall Nationals Pinewood Drags to benefit SEMA Cares as part of its annual Industry Awards Reception at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Reception attendees “rent” a Pinewood racer in exchange for a $20 donation to SEMA Cares and compete for the title of “Top Eliminator.”

“Last year, the Fall Nationals generated more than $3,500 for SEMA Cares,” said TORA Chairman George Lathouris of Keystone Automotive Operations. “All of which goes directly to the kids at Childhelp facilities and Victory Junction. We’re hoping to top that number again this year. Each Pinewood racer we bring to the event (more than 100) was built and signed by a child at one of the Childhelp facilities in Virginia or California. It brings the charity aspect of the event a little closer.”

Last year’s Top Eliminator champion was Wild Boar Products of Stanton, California. Can they be the first repeat winner in the history of the Fall Nationals? If you want to find out, the TORA Fall Nationals is scheduled for Wednesday evening, October 31, from 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m. in the Garden Patio North of the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Hilton). Pinewood racers sell out quickly; don’t be late!

This promises to be an exciting exchange for engine builders of all experience levels. Seating is limited; RSVP for the MPMC Seminar to reserve your space.

It was originally written by MPMC members, and by having it available online, the council hopes to continue that tradition by welcoming suggestions for changes or additional content.

You may access the Business Guidelines Manual through the MPMC link on the eLearning Center of SEI. If you have not done so already, simply enroll as an eLearner and you’ll be on your way. Rep Center relocated to the SEMA Member’s Lounge

Traditionally located in the Central Hall, the Rep Center, which provides Manufacturers Rep Council (MRC) members with private meeting rooms, business services and a lounge area, has moved and will now be a part of the SEMA Members’ Lounge. For the MRC leadership, the decision to relocate was based on the increased traffic and exposure to all critical segments of the industry afforded by the Members Lounge (North Hall 245-251).

According to MRC Chair Thomas Jourdan of True High Performance Sales, “the new location will provide increased awareness to industry influencers of the value manufacturer representatives bring to the distribution channel.”

Manufacturers are encouraged to visit the Rep Center and learn how using a professional outside sales rep or agent will benefit your business. Manufacturers interested in utilizing a professional rep can also sign up for one-on-one consultations.

If you would like more details on the Rep Center or to book private meetings, contact Zane Clark at 909-978-6696.

Need Help Getting Your Product to Market?

The SEMA Show offers exhibiting companies an array of tools and resources to ensure that their experience delivers value at and beyond the Show. For manufacturers with an established or new product line, the challenge often becomes how to best take advantage of the notoriety and exposure the Show can bring by getting their products to market effectively and efficiently. Many companies utilize an in-house sales team to accomplish this, while others opt to partner with a professional manufacturers' representative.

For the latter, and for those evaluating their sales strategy, SEMA’s Manufacturers' Rep Council (MRC) supports the Manufacturers' Representative Matching program during the Show. Located in the Exhibitor Services Manual, the Manufacturers' Representatives Matching Form connects manufacturers to MRC reps looking for new product lines. The completed forms are kept secure in the Rep Center, where MRC members can review and contact participating manufacturers to schedule a meeting.

In order to take advantage of this program, forms must be received by October 12, 2012. Enroll now by completing the Manufacturers' Representatives Matching Form.

SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women to Be Unveiled at SEMA Show Ford Booth

The SEMA Mustang Build Powered By Women, better known as “High Gear,” will debut in the Ford Motor Co. booth, Tuesday, October 30, at 10:00 a.m.—the opening day of the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The ’13 Mustang GT made national headlines during the summer when more than 40 women volunteered their time and expertise to customize the vehicle in less than two months. Immediately after the unveiling, the vehicle will be auctioned to raise money for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund. Details about the auction are available at www.sema.org/auctions.

“The SEMA Mustang Build is truly inspiring,” said Marla Moore, SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN) chair. “The SBN is honored to host this historic project. We’re now excited to unveil and share the final creation with the industry at the upcoming SEMA Show.”

The SBN launched the project to showcase the talented women of the automotive industry. With SEMA and Ford Motor Co. teaming up for the build, an additional 40-plus SEMA-member companies donated products and services, which include custom paint, customize wheels, a custom leather interior, high-performance suspension and a new supercharger autographed by industry legend Vic Edelbrock.

“This project could not have happened without the amazing support between SEMA, Ford Motor Co., Source Interlink Media, along with the many manufacturers who provided product for the Mustang and our awesome women build team members,” said Rose Kawasaki, SBN Vehicle Build Task Force chair.

“This project has confirmed the fact that there are a group of passionate female enthusiasts in the automotive industry, and this was an ideal undertaking to showcase the talent of women in our industry,” said Doug Evans, executive vice president for Source Interlink Media (SIM). SIM, which publishes dozens of leading automotive publications, including Hot Rod magazine, was an active partner in the SEMA Mustang Build, which hosted much of the build at its headquarters in El Segundo, California.

More information can be found on the SEMA Mustang Build website, or contact the vehicle build project manager—Senior Manager of Councils Bryan Harrison at BryanH@sema.org or 909-978-6691.

For the Wheel & Tire Council’s (WTC) Show planning committee, the decision was made to focus on what the organization’s membership continually says are the primary benefits of being a part of the group—education and networking.

WTC At a Glance

  • WTC Meeting and Presentation: Monday, October 29, 2012: WTC presents, “Turning ‘Real’ Trends Into ‘Real’ Revenue” and “Finishing the Plus-Sizing Job: Pressure, Labeling and TPMS,” from 2:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m., LVCC Room S227.

WTC Offers Two SEMA Show Sessions for Wheel and Tire Professionals

On Monday, October 29, the Wheel & Tire Council (WTC) will present two sessions focused on improving your business. According to Kelly Austin, WTC education chair, “WTC’s focus in delivering educational content is to be timely, relevant and meaningful." In response to the membership's desire to address issues, such as marketing, emerging trends, TPMS and tire safety, the WTC will host two sessions Monday, October 29, from 2:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall room S227.

In “Turning REAL Trends into REAL Revenue,” President and Founder of Exsell Marketing Wayne Williams will share the latest trends in the wheel and tire industry. Williams has more than 30 years’ experience in the automotive aftermarket and is the “counter intelligence” columnist for Modern Tire Dealer. The presentation will incorporate an overview of Google Insights and how this powerful tool can benefit your business by understanding what people search for and how they are searching for your products and your competitors.

The second session, “Finishing the Plus-Sizing Job: Pressure, Labeling and TPMS,” will be presented by Dr. John W. Daws, Daws Engineering. Dr. Daws specializes in the analysis of tire failure and has published papers on the forensic analysis of tire separation and the fitment of plus-size tires to vehicles and its relationship to vehicle handling and stability. Guests will get an understanding of tire-pressure requirements in various plus-sizing alternatives, learn about the vehicle's pressure labeling to conform to DOT safety requirements and good business practices. Dr. Daws will also clarify the impact of tire pressure and labeling requirements with respect to TPMS.

To register, visit WTC Meeting and Presentation.

Join the SEMA Council Family

SEMA hosts 10 distinct councils and committees that represent focused niches within the specialty-equipment industry. These groups are comprised of elected volunteers (Select Committee) who guide and direct council activities while representing the membership at large. Although each council acts independently and represents a different segment, they are all focused on the betterment of the industry as a whole.

The value councils provide SEMA and the industry is beyond refute. It is inspiring to witness a diverse collection of company representatives, many of which are direct competitors, come together and develop educational, training, youth awareness and networking events that are, at the core, designed to give back and promote business. An equally important council function is to ensure that SEMA sustains a pulse on the industry and maintains a presence with its members.

The question is often asked, “Why should my company join a council?” The answer is simple. SEMA councils open the doors and provide you exposure to industry leaders, decision makers, trendsetters and a community of like-minded individuals who share your passion and desire to see business succeed and prosper. Once the doors are open, it is your responsibility to take advantage of the benefits by becoming actively involved.

Brian Reese of COMP Cams, Jim Liaw of Formula Drift and Todd Petersen of MSD Performance were nominated as finalists for the first-ever SEMA Gen-3 Innovator Award.

SEMA created a new award this year to recognize the top young individual from the specialty-equipment industry who is making breakthroughs in new products, establishing new approaches to business or setting new trends.

Congratulations to Brian Reese of COMP Cams, Jim Liaw of Formula Drift and Todd Petersen of MSD Performance on becoming finalists for the first-ever Gen-3 Innovator Award.

The winner of the 2012 SEMA Gen-3 Innovator Award will be announced at the SEMA Industry Awards Banquet on Thursday, November 1, at the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton). The top 25 of the 90 nominees will also be invited to participate in the banquet.

The Association enlisted the help of SEMA members for the nomination process to help identify those individuals who exhibit the same pioneering spirit as the original first-generation industry founders. Not only was the process open for members to nominate their peers, but self nominations were also encouraged.

The SEMA Gen-3 Innovator Award winner was chosen based on the following criteria:

  • A “Gen-3 Innovator” is a young individual from the specialty-equipment industry who is making breakthroughs in the areas of new products, new approaches to business or setting new trends.
  • The candidate must work in the automotive aftermarket industry.
  • The candidate must be under 40 years of age as of December 31 of the current calendar year.
  • An individual can win the award more than one time, provided that person qualifies for a second nomination.

More information about the award is available by contacting Arlene Wood at arlenew@sema.org or 909-978-6689.

Innovative Marketing Services previously just covered the western coastal region of the United States. "Being that both of our firms are mutually dynamic, and Innovative Marketing services has worked very hard in continuing to expand its sales force and market area coverage at the same time that Rampage Products has done the same, it was a natural fit for our respective companies to work together on this enhanced opportunity," stated Dave Williams, vice president of sales for Rampage Products. The Rep Center has moved and will now be a part of the SEMA Members Lounge.

Traditionally located in the Central Hall, the Rep Center, which provides Manufacturers Rep Council (MRC) members with private meeting rooms, business services and a lounge area, has moved and will now be a part of the SEMA Members Lounge. For the MRC leadership, the decision to relocate was based on the increased traffic and exposure to all critical segments of the industry afforded by the Members Lounge (North Hall 245–251).

FULL THROTTLE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS UP FOR GRABS IN LAS VEGAS: The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing returns to Las Vegas for the 12th annual Big O Tires NHRA Nationals, October 25–28, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event is the 22nd of 23 races in the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series and fifth of six playoff races in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship.

Last year, Del Worsham, Ron Capps, Mike Edwards and Eddie Krawiec raced to wins in their respective categories. Many of the biggest names in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will blast their way towards the finish line.

Stars, such as Top Fuel points leader and fan-favorite Antron Brown, Tony “The Sarge” Schumacher and Top Fuel speed record holder Spencer Massey, will compete for the race win and world championship crown. Season-long points leader Ron Capps, the defending Funny Car winner at this event, will try to keep his Funny Car championship dream alive, but new points leader and national record holder “Fast” Jack Beckman and Reading winner Mike Neff are hot on his trail. The Harley-Davidson team will finish their Reading final here and then continue their title-race for the 2012 crown.

Fans arriving early for the penultimate race-weekend will be treated to the traditional NHRA Fremont Street Fan Fest, annually one of the best-attended Fan Fests both in terms of driver and fan participation. The Fan Fest will be Thursday, October 25, at 6:00 p.m., on Fremont Street and will feature the sport’s top drivers, legendary NHRA announcer Bob Frey and an NHRA-themed light show over Freemont Street.

Fans will be able to participate in a driver Q&A session and get autographed hero cards from their favorite drivers. As always, fans will have the opportunity to interact with their favorite drivers as they’re granted an exclusive pit pass. Pro qualifying will run at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., Friday, October 26, and will continue at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 27. Final professional eliminations begin at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, October 28.

NHRA FANFEST AT FREMONT STREET IN LAS VEGAS ALWAYS A FAN-FAVORITE: Fans are invited to meet their favorite NHRA drivers at a festival at the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas, Thursday, October 26, from 5:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Third Street Stage. The free autograph session will kick off the October 25–28 NHRA Big O Tires Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Las Vegas NHRA race is the next-to-last stop on the 2012 schedule, and point battles in all four pro divisions (Top Fuel Dragster, Top Fuel Funny Car, Pro Stock Car, Pro Stock Motorcycle) are tight.

Drivers and riders scheduled to appear include: John Force, Johnny Gray, Khalid alBalooshi, Shawn Langdon, David Grubnic, Brandon Bernstein, Morgan Lucas, Terry McMillen, Steve Torrence, Spencer Massey, Todd Lesenko, Jeff Arend, Alexis DeJoria, Ashley Force, Courtney Force, Larry Morgan, Jeg Coughlin Jr., Shane Gray, Erica Enders, Greg Anderson, Jason Line, Allen Johnson, L.E. Tonglet, Michael Ray, Karen Stoffer, Matt Smith, Angie Smith, Hector Arana, Hector Arana Jr., Eddie Krawiec, Andrew Hines and Leah Pruett.

Two Top Fuel Funny Cars will be on display at the free autograph session: John Force’s new “Destination Force” Ford and Johnny Gray’s Big O Tires Dodge. The evening will start at 5:00 p.m. with music and games. The autograph session will start at 5:30 p.m. and end at 6:30 p.m. The special NHRA light show will be seen on the Fremont Street Experience canopy at 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

NHRA ROOKIES WILL TRY TO EARN MORE VOTES IN LAS VEGAS: While many veteran drivers will be fighting it out in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship playoffs, the battle for the 2012 Auto Club Road to the Future Award is also going to be intense at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway during the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals, October 25–28. Each of the eight eligible rookie drivers will have one last shot at the season’s penultimate event to make a lasting impression on the auto-racing journalists who will cast votes to determine the winner of the award. Among the candidates trying to make a strong showing to earn votes is the most recent rookie winner, Top Fuel driver Khalid alBalooshi. The native Middle East driver who resides in Los Angeles is still riding the momentum following his first victory in Reading after defeating Al-Anabi Racing teammate Shawn Langdon in the semifinals and Countdown to the Championship points leader Antron Brown in the final round of eliminations. alBalooshi, only the third driver from outside North America to win a Full Throttle Series race, got off to a slow start this season but has been picking up steam near the end of the year.

“I give my team owner, the crew guys and all the people who work with us thanks for making this win,” an elated alBalooshi said while clutching his first Top Fuel Wally in Pennsylvania. “I try my best, and I know that everybody on the team is trying their best, and finally, I won my first race.”

Two Funny Car drivers—Alexis DeJoria and Courtney Force—have made an immediate impact in the sport and are certainly among the leading candidates. The season’s most decorated rookie, Force, has had a memorable first year behind the wheel; she earned her first victory in Seattle and raced to No. 1 qualifying positions in Indianapolis and Dallas in her Traxxas Ford Mustang. She also posted runner-up finishes in Chicago and Denver and was one of only two rookies to qualify for the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship—the NHRA’s playoffs—ensuring a top 10 points finish. NHRA FULL THROTTLE WORLD CHAMPS WILL BE CROWNED AT AUTO CLUB NHRA FINALS: The 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will come to a finish November 8–11, at the 48th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. Race fans will flock to the historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona to witness the season finale of the Full Throttle Series and be a part of the crowning of the 2012 world champions in all four categories—Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle. This final of six playoff races in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship will be televised on ESPN2HD. The sport’s favorite NHRA stars as well as some new contenders will be competing in the season’s final race, including Top Fuel points leader Antron Brown, teammate and title challenger Spencer Massey, seven-time Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher, Funny Car leader Jack Beckman, Ron Capps, Mike Neff, Robert Hight, 15-time Funny Car world champ John Force and rookie-sensation Courtney Force. Pro Stock title contenders include Allen Johnson, Jason Line, and female superstar Erica Enders, while in Pro Stock Motorcycle the Harley-Davidson duo Eddie Krawiec and Andrew Hines are tightening the competition in their battle to the NHRA championship.

In addition to the racing on the strip, the NHRA is bringing fans more entertainment as the season comes to a close. The Auto Club NHRA Finals celebration kicks off on Saturday, November 3, as the NHRA hosts the community-favorite Fan Fest in downtown La Verne with car displays and driver autograph sessions, including Funny Car points leader “Fast” Jack Beckman. Bring the entire family to Fan Fest, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., located on D and 3rd Street. In observance of Veteran’s Day, active and retired military can save $10 per Sunday ticket by showing military ID. A special Veteran’s Day Track Walk with Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown will be held Sunday morning. Free for all Sunday ticket holders, the popular Track Walk gives fans the opportunity to walk down the legendary drag strip alongside some of the NHRA’s biggest stars.

As always, fans will have the opportunity to interact with their favorite drivers as they’re granted an exclusive pit pass. While strolling through the pits and the Midway, check out the NHRA’s “The Rumble in the Junction” Car Corral featuring dozens of nostalgic dragsters, race cars and hot rods on display and Cacklefest shows all weekend. As part of the Nitro Generation theme of the season, the NHRA is offering free general admission for kids 12 and under with a paying adult. Tickets are available online at www.NHRATIX.com or by calling the NHRA Ticket Sales Center at 800-884-NHRA (6472).

MASSEY LOOKING FOR HELP FROM THE RACING GODS TO TRACK DOWN BROWN: Spencer Massey is second in the Top Fuel points standings, 104 back of leader Antron Brown with two races remaining. He trails by more than five rounds of racing with only eight rounds to go in the season. Massey realizes passing Brown will be a very tall order, but he’s hoping for some help from the racing gods as he hits the track in the final two events.

"Racing gods are racing gods," Massey said. "Hopefully, they fall in the favor of the Prestone/FRAM car, but a lot of things are going to have to fall our way. But if you think back, you can look back at years ago when Tony Schumacher won the championship with his run in 2006 that was kind of the same situation. So anything can happen, but in reality, I mean, it's going to be tough. But I am going to keep my same focus like we have been and try and win both races."

Brown, meanwhile, who set a national record in Reading, Pennsylvania, and posted a runner-up finish to increase his lead, says he and his Matco Tools team need to stay the course and maintain their focus in order to finish the job. “We have to keep attacking if we want to have the hopes to actually bring this championship home,” Brown said. “And that's the way we're looking at these last two races is that they're do or die. We've got to go in here and not leave one 'i' undotted and one 't' uncrossed, and we've got to go in there and just keep digging and digging, and hopefully we can be there at the end and contend and try to bring this championship home.”

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

23: FUNNY CAR TITLE BATTLE IS TIGHT: Thanks to a victory at St. Louis and a semifinal effort and national record performance at Reading, Pennsylvania, in his Valvoline/NextGen Dodge Charger, “Fast” Jack Beckman has emerged from 97 points behind season-long points leader Ron Capps to move 23 markers ahead of the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger driver with only two races remaining in the season. Also in the mix is noted tuner-driver Mike Neff, who won at Reading and now sits 54 points behind Beckman in third place in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. The competition between these three drivers will certainly be intense at the final two races in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship: Las Vegas (October 25–28) and Pomona (November 8–11).

SEMA Show exhibitors and attendees can utilize a new member benefit from UPS to help lower their shipping and delivery costs.

SEMA has partnered with UPS to introduce a new member benefit that will help lower shipping and delivery costs. The benefit includes up to 34% off many package deliveries, more than 70% off Less than Truckload (LTL) freight and special offers on other UPS business services, such as parcel insurance, cargo finance loans, design and test labs and more.

“SEMA is always looking for ways to add value to our members’ benefits, and our strong partnership with UPS provided a great solution,” said Gary Vigil, SEMA membership director. “The discounts and benefits offered by UPS can make all the difference to a business trying to grow in these tough economic times.”

UPS has a long history of working with SEMA and the automotive industry. UPS provides SEMA Show exhibitors with streamlined and discounted services to help with shipments of products and booths back to their businesses after the Show. UPS experts help ensure that items are appropriately packaged, boxed and shipped where they need to go. They also assist with completion of forms and paperwork required for international shipments.

Having worked closely with the industry for several years, UPS has a good understanding of the industry and the needs of SEMA members. As a result, special discounts and services were developed for SEMA-member companies.

“The enhanced level of benefits UPS now offers SEMA members reflects our ongoing commitment to the automotive industry and the premier trade association for the automotive specialty market,” said Kristin DeBates, automotive segment marketing manager at UPS. “Logistics is our passion, but our mission is to help customers build business more efficiently, and these new offers can do just that.”

  kagan
In 2006, SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting (right) presented Leo Kagan with the SEMA Scholarship Committee's Humanitarian Award.

The Leo Kagan Scholarship has been established as part of the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund—a group that promotes industry leadership by supporting the educational efforts of current and future automotive professionals.

Kagan is an industry icon who was instrumental in the founding of the SEMA Scholarship Program. The new scholarship will be presented annually to a female interested in a career in the restyling market.

"While women were not traditionally involved in our industry, they have become more and more integral over the years," said Kagan. "I'm glad that this SEMA Scholarship will ensure that females receive support and encouragement to pursue careers in the automotive restyling market. Such diversity in our industry is what contributes to the excitement and innovation of the specialty-equipment market."

Kagan began his career in the automotive specialty-equipment industry in 1964 when he was working with Hurst. He went on to work for Amco—the convertible top manufacturer—for about 15 years, before serving as SEMA president from 1975–1979. During his tenure at SEMA, he played a key role in moving the world-famous SEMA Show from Anaheim, California, to Las Vegas.

Kagan continued to be active in the association, helping to establish the SEMA Scholarship Program. In 1982, Kagan was recognized for his contributions by being inducted into the SEMA Hall of Fame—a prestigious honor reserved for very few individuals.

"Leo has contributed a great deal to SEMA and to the industry for nearly 50 years. It's great to recognize his long-time work and support through this scholarship," said Joel Ayres, SEMA Scholarship Committee chairperson. "Leo's impact and contributions to this industry will continue to be felt for generations to come."

The Leo Kagan Scholarship will be among the many scholarships SEMA awards annually. SEMA scholarships are presented annually to students pursuing careers in the automotive aftermarket. A total of $130,000 was awarded to 69 individuals in 2012. Applications for the next school year will be available at www.SEMA.org/scholarships in early December, with applications due April 5, 2013.

New Cars, New Techniques – Are You Ready?

It’s no secret that cars today are more electronically complex than ever before. It is enough to baffle even the most seasoned car enthusiast. Appearance, suspension and engine upgrades have always been mechanical in nature so the experienced touch of a technician’s hand is always reassuring to achieve a great final aftermarket upgrade. Electronic upgrades, particularly those related to comfort and entertainment, are not as easily achieved. The question is: Are you ready? If you find yourself having difficulty making sense of how to approach today’s modern vehicles to achieve better sound, add safety and convenience upgrades and expand the enjoyment for both drivers and passengers, you don’t want to miss any of the Mobile Electronics Education Sessions taking place Tuesday, October 30, and Wednesday, October 31, at the 2012 SEMA Show.

Here’s a look at a few can’t miss sessions:

Car Audio Mythbusters: Robust Business in the Aftermarket Is Easier Than You Might Think
Presented by: Andy Wehmeyer, Global Product Line Manager at Harman Consumer Group
Tuesday, October 30, 9:30am-10:30am (Room N257, upstairs in North Hall)

Andy Wehmeyer is a consummate audio guru, but you will find his knowledge of complex car audio topics blends seamlessly with his ability to convey business-minded, solution-based approaches to selling and installing car audio products. It’s an opportunity in your business with the right mindset and skills. Believe it or not, it’s an underserved market. Andy will bust some common myths and show you how to make car audio a part of your business and keep your customers pleased with the results. Do not miss this important car audio business-focused session.

Adding Integrated Electronics to Today’s Complex Dashboards
Presented by: Derek Schmiedl, Chief Operating Officer at NAV-TV
Tuesday, October 30, 1:00pm-2:00pm (Room N257, upstairs in North Hall)

Let vehicle-electronics-integration expert Derek Schmiedl show you how today’s complex dashboards are a source of profit and opportunity, not the nail in the coffin. If you’re seeking a great understanding of how to approach additions such as audio, navigation, video and reverse cameras to modern vehicles, this session is chock full of great content that will change your business. It’s really about embracing integration instead of running away from it. Whether you’re in the car audio business or a vehicle customizer, Derek’s informative session will help guide your car electronics integration path.

Adding Luxury Features to Upgrade Vehicle Enjoyment
Presented by: Jeff Varick, Brandmotion; Pete Kallgren, Rostra
Wednesday, October 31, 3:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. (Room N257, upstairs in North Hall)

After traversing the SEMA Show, you’ll want to stop in to this informative and (pardon the pun) ‘comfortable’ session about adding luxury features to modern vehicles. Whether you’re a retailer, customizer/restyler, a used- or new-car dealership or an expediter, this session provides the nuts and bolts of the products and the luxury and convenience features that you can add where the factory left off. Whether it’s cruise control, power windows, heated seats or reverse camera systems, Jeff Varick and Pete Kallgren will ramp up your opportunities for keeping happy customers while keeping it profitable in the process.

And don’t forget to come meet Bryan Schmitt of Mobile Solutions in person at the 2012 SEMA Show for his hands-on session entitled Interior and Trim Panel Fabrication Techniques, which will take place Tuesday, October 30, in room N257. There will be live demonstrations in this session!

The annual Media Trade Conference, which features companies from SEMA's Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council (MPMC), brings together members of the working press with motorsports parts producers for face-to-face private meetings. Media reps have the opportunity to meet with up to 14 exhibitors each day of the conference—for a total of 42 quality meetings throughout the event's three days.

When registering online, media will select the manufacturers they most want to meet and indicate those they do not want to meet. A personalized schedule will then be created for the registered media and sent out in early January.

Register now! Questions? Media inquiries can be directed to dellad@sema.org. All manufacturer questions or general questions about the event can be directed to jimsk@sema.org.

Enrollment takes only a few seconds, and helps SEI track use and engagement. If you have any questions, contact Jim Skelly at jimsk@sema.org.

The SEMA Mustang Build Powered By Women will debut in the Ford Motor Co. booth at the SEMA Show, Tuesday, October 30, at 10:00 a.m.

8 SEMA Show Highlights for Buyers

Insider Tips for Taking Full Advantage of the 2012 Show

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows

As a buyer, you realize that the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas is the world’s premier automotive aftermarket trade event—and you wouldn’t miss it for the world. Yet with so many business opportunities concentrated under one roof at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), how do you make the most of your Show experience? It’s not easy to cover more than 1 million sq. ft. of products, exhibits, display vehicles and special events in just a few, short days. With the Show rapidly approaching, now is the time to get organized and establish your game plan. Here are eight insider tips to get you started.

1. Book With Travel Planners

Don’t underestimate the value of convenient, hassle-free hotel reservations. While not walking the Show, you’ll appreciate quality lodging that keeps you well rested and refreshed for what can be a busy daily schedule. Booking your room(s) through Travel Planners (the only official SEMA Show Housing Bureau) helps guarantee the best rates possible at favored Las Vegas hotels offering quick and easy access to the Convention Center. Even better, with the exception of the MGM Grand and The Signature hotels, you’ll also avoid resort fees when securing your accommodations through Travel Planners. Moreover, the company offers online access to exclusive hotel profiles that include descriptions, amenities, photos and maps for every official hotel. You can also manage your reservations (view, change or cancel) in real time, 24/7 through the Travel Planners website. For details, go to http://www.semashow.com/, click on “Attendees” and scroll down to select “Travel & Lodging.”

2. Go Mobile at the Show

In past years, buyers and other SEMA Show attendees found their way to booths and exhibits through the printed SEMA Show Pocket Guide. This year, there’s also an innovative new way to navigate the floor using the free “SEMA Show 2012” mobile application for iPhones and Android smartphones. A great portable resource for locating exhibitors and education sessions, the app even allows users to search for exhibiting companies by product category and then actually communicate with them to set appointments. Because it was developed by CompuSystems, the Show’s registration company, the “SEMA Show 2012” app also includes a special feature that lets users access, track and print out such appointments through the CompuSystems registration dashboard. To download the app, visit your appropriate smartphone marketplace.

3. Experience Ideas Alive

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase is a popular first stop for buyers seeking an up-close and personal look at the hottest new industry offerings. There is also a Featured Products section filled with favored items from manufacturers that, although not new, remain bestsellers.

Slated for Tuesday, October 30, from 7:30 a.m.–8:45 a.m. at the LVH (formerly Las Vegas Hilton), the New Products Awards Breakfast clues buyers in to the best of the best of the Show’s debut products. Plus, it’s a great chance to further network with manufacturers.

While there’s a lot to investigate inside the Show, you’ll also want to step outside the Convention Center halls to outdoor exhibits like the Dub Show Tour. Here you’ll see specialty equipment on display and in action—and get a glimpse at what’s wowingthe crowds.

Automobile Events, Automobile Trade Show, Auto Show, Automotive Trade Show, Automotive Trade Shows
Announced on the Show’s first day, the SEMA Award honors the event’s most prominent OEM vehicle platforms. The awards are considered a barometer of the vehicles that enthusiasts are most likely to modify and a way to identify what cars will be hot in the coming year.

It’s no secret that Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase is the SEMA Show’s most popular section among buyers. Located in the upper level, east end of South Hall, Ideas Alive delivers more than 25,000 sq. ft. of innovations that you’ll definitely want to examine up close. In addition to new products, the section boasts a Featured Products section where exhibitors display selected high-volume products, regardless of introduction date. All entries are barcoded so that you can easily scan and download essential information. The Showcase opens each morning at 8:00 a.m., prior to main Show hours, so you can get a jump on your day. In addition to the Showcase, there’s the New Products Award Breakfast (Tuesday, October 30, 7:30 a.m.–8:45 a.m., at the LVH, formerly Las Vegas Hilton, Ballrooms A–F), where the winners of the New Products Showcase judging are announced. You can get your free ticket when you register for the Show or via your registration dashboard.

4. Explore Off-Road Success

If you’ve ever wanted to more fully explore the fast-growing, high-profit off-road segment, you won’t want to miss the Show’s new Off-Road Success Center, presented by OMIX-ADA/Rugged Ridge. Located in booth #30147 of the upper South Hall within the Show’s Truck, SUVs & Off-Road section, the exhibition features educational seminars, one-on-one consultations, demonstrations and free print materials relating to this ever-growing industry category. Aimed at business owners and decision makers, the Off-Road Success Center offers a purpose-built venue to exchange ideas, learn new concepts for success and network with other like-minded businesspeople. Buyers will especially enjoy the wide range of Show vehicles, including vintage models provided by Jeep Jamboree USA and OMIX-ADA.

5. Catch the SEMA Award Winners

Among the highlights of the SEMA Show are the hundreds of Show vehicles loaded with specialty-equipment products. Street rods, musclecars, exotics, compacts, trucks—you’ll see them all. But buyers will want to pay special attention to the annual SEMA Award winners, announced on the Show’s first day, Tuesday, October 30 from 9:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m. at the Vehicle Technology Center in the Grand Lobby of the LVCC. Each year, Show organizers survey qualified booth vehicles to tabulate the most prominent models. The results fall into four categories: Hottest Car, Hottest Truck, Hottest Sport Compact and Hottest 4x4-SUV. These reflect the vehicle platforms that manufacturers believe enthusiasts are most likely to modify. For astute buyers, the awards offer an ideal barometer of trending products in the marketplace.

6. Take a Look Outside

As a buyer, it’s easy to spend all your time in the Las Vegas Convention Center—but don’t! You’ll also want to step outside where you can see specialty-equipment parts in action and gauge what’s currently exciting automotive enthusiasts. Start with the Global Rallycross Championship race, which comes to the SEMA Show on opening night, Tuesday, October 30, over a course specially constructed on LVCC grounds directly across from the convention hall. Then, throughout the Show, Ford again presents its current crop of racing vehicles in the Ford Out Front exhibition in the lot fronting the Convention Center. The experience showcases the automaker’s high-performance driving stars as they demonstrate drifting, gymkhana and freestyle driving in the manufacturer’s specially equipped race cars. Meanwhile, the DUB Show Tour makes its annual final stop at the 2012 SEMA Show. Featuring artists and entertainers along with the publication’s vast display of custom cars, trucks, SUVs, exotics, lowriders and motorcycles, you’ll also find this event in front of the Convention Center. Equally dynamic, the GM Proving Grounds between the Central and South Halls includes the Chevy Drive feature, where attendees can hitch a ride with professional drivers.

7. Stay for the SEMA Cruise

Although the SEMA Show has always been the highlight of the year for the specialty-equipment industry, the highlight for the local populace is now the SEMA Cruise, a feature introduced at last year’s Show. The SEMA Cruise begins when the Show ends at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As the booths are dismantled and the products are packed up for shipment home, the display vehicles are driven en masse out of the Las Vegas Convention Center. It’s not only one last chance for buyers to see the Show’s amazing vehicles, but it also represents another prime opportunity to witness firsthand which cars and products capture consumer enthusiasm on the street.

8. Think SEMA Year-Round

As the specialty-equipment industry’s number-one trade association, SEMA is much more than its annual Show. Membership brings year-round benefits, including ongoing education and networking opportunities, market research, legislative advocacy, industry news and international relationships. SEMA can also help your business with insurance, freight savings, consumer credit programs and more. If you aren’t taking full advantage of SEMA membership, now is the perfect time to deepen your relationship with the association. Be sure to visit the Show’s Association Center in the Grand Lobby (between North and Central Halls) to learn more about all of the ongoing programs and services SEMA members enjoy.

The aggressive-looking Spark Sinister concept, which blends rally-inspired exterior cues with a black appearance for a night-racing aesthetic, is one of eight small-car concepts that Chevrolet will highlight at the 2012 SEMA Show.

Chevrolet’s small cars are racking up big sales in 2012, and the bowtie brand will explore their wilder sides at the 2012 SEMA Show with a stable of stylized Spark, Sonic and Cruze concepts. The cars demonstrate the possibilities for customers who want a more personalized driving experience.

Chevrolet previewed the concept vehicles ahead of the October 30 opening of the 2012 SEMA Show, the annual automotive aftermarket extravaganza of styling and performance, along with the multihued “The Color Run” Spark and “Pink Out” Spark – a car for a cause.

“With Chevy’s new small cars attracting young buyers with a taste for customization, Spark, Sonic and Cruze are the perfect canvasses to express their personalities,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing.

“The content, colors and performance of each concept is being evaluated for possible production as Chevrolet continues to seek new ways to give customers more choices.”

Chevy small car sales were up 97% in September. Sonic recorded 7,525 sales for the month, with sales of nearly 65,000 year to date through September. Spark, which went on sale earlier this year in 18 U.S. markets, recorded 2,223 sales in September. The Cruze compact sedan is one of the country’s best-selling cars, with more than 180,000 sales through nine months of 2012. That includes 25,787 sales in September.

“The momentum with these small cars continues to build, as more customers discover their fun-to-drive spirits and high-value content, including great infotainment options—such as Sonic and Spark’s MyLink features,” said Perry.

The small-car concept vehicles demonstrate a range of performance-based styling expressions, including the first application of Chevrolet’s Z-Spec treatment for Spark with family traits, such as the mesh grille inserts and graphic accents. The Z-Spec concept demonstrates a cohesive design with a family of factory-engineered accessories and the best of the aftermarket under a single theme.

Z-Spec parts could be purchased individually to suit customer tastes and budgets. They’re designed for purchase and installation through Chevrolet dealerships with the option of installation at purchase and cost being rolled into the customer’s monthly payments. Z-Spec concepts could spawn limited-edition production models from Chevrolet.

This year’s Chevy small car SEMA vehicles include:

Cruze Upscale concept
The Cruze Upscale concept moves the compact sedan up a few rungs on the luxury ladder with a Burnished Brandy Metallic exterior and unique exterior appointments.

Sonic Z-Spec 1 concept
This performance-oriented vision of the Sonic sedan blends the Z-Spec aesthetic with a more capable driving experience, including a power-enhancing exhaust system and upgraded brakes. The capability is matched with a custom Synergy Green exterior.

Sonic Z-Spec 2.5 concept
A tuner-inspired concept with the performance to back up its aggressive stance, the Sonic Z-Spec 2.5 sedan shows what’s attainable with Chevrolet Performance and GM Accessories parts, along with select aftermarket components and a dash of color.

Spark Z-Spec concept
The Spark Z-Spec demonstrates a cohesive and branded package of enhancements drawn from accessories already available through Chevrolet dealers—giving the cheeky Salsa Red Spark a definite attitude.

Spark Sinister concept
The aggressive-looking Spark Sinister concept blends rally-inspired exterior cues with a black appearance for a night-racing aesthetic that looks at home in the shadows of a city’s industrial district.

"The Color Run" Spark
Chevrolet Spark is the official pace car of The Color Run—a popular, nationwide series of urban 5K races in which thousands of participants are doused from head to toe in different colors for each kilometer—and it leads the pack in a colorful display of its own. A custom, multihued graphics package gives the Spark a post-race appearance while a Chevrolet Accessories ground effects kit and Z-Spec grille give it a sportier profile. The production 15-inch split spoke wheels are painted white, but don’t stay that way once color-dousing participants shower this one-of-a-kind pace car with colored corn starch along the route. Inside, custom seat with The Color Run graphics are featured, along with Chevrolet Accessories stainless steel pedal covers and sill plates.

"Pink Out" Spark Cancer Awareness Concept
Chevrolet takes a stand against breast cancer and supports the American Cancer Society with a Techno Pink Spark that’s adorned with pink ribbon graphics. It also wears Chevrolet Accessories ground effects and a Z-spec grille. Inside, pink accent colors—including a pink suede headliner, pillar trim, instrument panel trim and accent piping—round out the cause-inspired theme. More information about the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer-fighting programs is available at www.cancer.org.

Several tools and programs are in place to help SEMA Showgoers enhance their Show experience.

tstc

The Professional Restylers Organization (PRO) has announced that the Technical Skills & Training Conference (TSTC) PRO Garage has eclipsed the 500 registered attendee mark.

The overwhelming response to this one-day event, featuring live installation demonstrations, is representative of the value PRO delivers to its membership and the importance of the restyling and accessory appearance industry.

Manufacturer participation in TSTC is exclusive to exhibiting PRO-member companies and provides an unparalleled stage to reach the critical target audience that only the SEMA Show can offer. PRO membership is offering this event at no cost to Show attendees and hopes to expose the specialty-equipment industry to the value of accessorization by demonstrating quality installations, best practices and increasing awareness for new business opportunities.

If you have not yet signed-up for this event, there is still time to register and be a part of one of the SEMA Show’s must-attend events of the year. PRO would also like to recognize this year’s participating manufacturers for their support in making TSTC such a huge success:

For more details on this year’s event or questions on how to secure a manufacturer demonstration slot at the 2013 TSTC PRO Garage, contact Zane Clark at 909-978-6696.
