SEMA Show 1971: Performance Past Meets the Future

The VIPs chosen for the ceremonial ribbon cutting to open the 1971 SEMA Show represented the past, present and future of automotive performance. Doing the honors with her “shifting hand,” as Hot Rod Industry News (HRIN) described it, was drag racer Shirley Shahan. She was joined by (from left) Willie Garner, Don Jensen, Doug Toms and Roy Richter.

Shahan, nicknamed the “Drag-On Lady,” is one of just a few women who fought their way to recognition and success in the early days of drag racing. She spent much of the ’60s campaigning a series of Hemi-powered Plymouths and Dodges, then switched camps to American Motors and raced the very first Super Stock AMX built by Hurst in 1969. For the 1971 season, her crew chief and husband, H.L. Shahan, built a Gremlin and two Hornets for them to race in the then-new Pro Stock class.

Garner and Richter were automotive aftermarket pioneers who were influential in the founding and early guidance of SEMA. Garner started Trans-Dapt Performance out of his garage in the ’50s, making and selling transmission adapters. He served as SEMA president in the ’60s and was on the SEMA Board of Directors in 1971. Richter, SEMA’s president in 1971, had been a racer and sprint-car builder in the ’30s; took over one of Southern California’s original speed shops, Bell Auto Parts, in the ’40s; and would launch two iconic brands: Bell Helmets in the ’50s and Cragar Wheels in the ’60s.

Everyone was all smiles in the photo, but these were turbulent times in the performance industry. The founding of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1970 brought new regulations to address air pollution—regulations that would fundamentally change the automotive landscape.

Jensen, director of automotive emissions for Ford Motor Company, and Toms, director of the National Highway Safety Bureau, had been invited by SEMA to “tell it like it is” at a pre-Show luncheon, HRIN reported. “Those in attendance listened intently as first Toms and then Jensen discussed topics of great interest and concern to literally everyone who owns or drives an automobile.”

The theme common to the two talks, HRIN said, was that aftermarket companies should “work with the government and other groups concerned with the environment in a positive way.”

Looking into the future, Toms told the group that the internal-combustion engine would be around for at least another 10 to 15 years, and possibly longer. “You fellows have too many resources, too much talent, and far too much inventive fire to allow any other conclusion. I think you’ll satisfy the demand for clean air and acceptable noise levels.”

“The high-performance industry will have to commit itself to the solution of air pollution just as the Detroit automakers have had to do,” Jensen said. “Today we know that some sacrifices are going to have to be made, and such things as economy and performance might have to give way to lower automobile emissions.”

(That thinking about fuel economy would change in the not-too-distant future as the first oil embargo hit the United States in 1973.)

Jensen agreed with Toms that the internal-combustion engine “is not doomed in the foreseeable future,” the magazine said, “although he mentioned several alternate power sources that are being explored. He predicted that the automotive aftermarket, including the performance industry, can grow and prosper if they are prepared for the changes that are taking place.”

Jeep Wrangler 392

FCA is on a mission to keep the ’21 Jeep Wrangler on top of the off-road market despite a new threat from the upcoming ’21 Ford Bronco. The Jeep brand recently showed off a concept revealing that V8 power will come to the iconic off-roader. The Jeep brand introduced the Wrangler Rubicon 392 Concept—a four-door Wrangler powered by the 6.4L Hemi V8 making 450 hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque and capable of a 0–60 mph in less than 5 sec. Now a preproduction prototype has been caught on the street. Expect the production model to feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and stay true to the concept.

A 6.4L Hemi Wrangler would mark the first time that the off-road brand offered a V8 option since the ’81 Jeep CJ.

Genesis G70 Shooting Brake

Here’s a first look at the Genesis G70 Shooting Brake. The prototype was snapped undergoing testing in Germany. While camouflaged, it’s obvious that we’re looking at the G70 wagon.

The more utilitarian body style of the Genesis G70 will launch with a facelift of the current model. It features split horizontal headlights and taillights similar to those found on the larger G80 sedan and GV80 SUV. We’ve already seen the same lighting on the facelifted Genesis G70 prototypes, so these photos make it clear that the G70 Shooting Brake will wear them as well.

To justify the Shooting Brake description, the G70 wagon appears to favor sporty styling over practicality. Expect an official debut in 2021.

’22 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This is the ’22 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught testing out west. The vehicle will get a complete redesign, inheriting a new platform derived from Alfa Romeo’s Giorgio underpinnings. It will be significantly beefed-up for a Jeep, but it allows for more technological advancements than the current WK2 Grand Cherokee that was designed in the DaimlerChrysler days. Included in the upgrades will be a 48V electrical system to power a new inline six-cylinder with mild hybrid assist, which is part of a new engine family from FCA. It’s expected that this engine might supplant the 5.7L Hemi V8, although a V8 is all but certain to continue to power high-performance versions of the Grand Cherokee.

FROM THE HILL

Election Day is Almost Here

2020 State Elections Will Bring Real Change to Your Community and the Industry

By Caroline Fletcher

From the Hill
Control of the house, senate and/or governorship is within reach of either party in many states. The 2020 election will impact which state bills become law in the next few years in addition to state and federal redistricting for the next decade.

You don’t have to keep up with the fast-paced and turbulent world of politics to know that there is a presidential election on November 3. President Donald Trump is facing former Vice President Joe Biden in a race to control the White House for the next four years. The president of the United States is the most consequential elected office in America, and the outcome of this race will greatly impact the direction of the country and the lives of its citizens. Yet few people recognize the importance of the countless other elections taking place in November that will directly affect their lives in a substantive way for years to come.

State-level elections hardly receive much attention, fanfare or excitement, as newspapers and talking heads on cable news are almost singularly focused on the race for the presidency and key congressional races. State elections are usually put on with less funding, and those running are generally not well known, save for yard signs that pop up in your community in the weeks leading up to election day. However, the importance of the outcome of those elections cannot be overstated, especially in 2020.

There are multiple states where control of the house, senate and/or governorship is within reach of either party. Those elections are important for several reasons, one of which is that the U.S. Census is being counted in 2020.

In 2021 new districts will be drawn up for state legislators and U.S. House members to represent. In most states, state legislative and congressional district lines are redrawn by state legislatures based on the results of the census and will remain in place through 2030. The party that controls the statehouse after the 2020 election will have greater control of redistricting, which in turn can influence elections for an entire decade.

While the balance of power in states following the 2020 election can impact redistricting, it also influences which state bills are introduced and passed in the next couple of years. The party that controls the state legislature generally controls the bills that are passed, and the views of the governor can impact whether that legislation becomes law.

State laws have an enormous impact on the automotive aftermarket industry—more than most people may realize. States can set their own maximum exhaust-noise levels for vehicles and have their own policies regarding the titling and registration of specialty and antique vehicles. States that require an inspection can set unreasonable standards, excluding countless vehicles from being able to be registered, enjoyed and modified by aftermarket parts. Below are examples of states with competitive races in 2020 where the balance of power could easily shift on Election Day, shaping the laws over the next decade that impact you.

The North Carolina state government is locked in a tight race for party control. The governorship and all the seats in the house and senate are up for grabs this November. Currently, the state has a Democrat governor, while both the house and senate have Republican majorities. Republicans have maintained a stronghold over the state legislature in recent history, with both houses containing Republican majorities since 2011. Democrats chipped away at the Republican majorities during the 2018 election, gaining seats in both houses but failing to secure majorities.

From the Hill
There is a lot at stake in the ballot box on November 3. Exercising your right to vote is the only way to help ensure that the people who represent you on the local, state and federal levels align with your values and can best represent your interests.

This year, Democrats would have to gain six seats to become the majority party in the North Carolina house and only five to control the state senate. Current Democrat Governor Roy Cooper holds a slight lead in recent polls over his Republican opponent, Dan Forest, in the gubernatorial race. The direction of policymaking in the Tar Heel state for the foreseeable future depends on whether one party controls the governor’s office and both houses or if there is split control between the parties.

While North Carolina is seen by Democrats as an opportunity to flip control in their direction, Republicans look to reclaim control of the Colorado Senate, which would break the state’s Democratic trifecta (i.e. a state where majorities of both chambers of the legislature and the governor are from the same political party).

Colorado just became a trifecta state in 2018 when Democrats took control of the state senate. To break that control, Republicans need to flip only two of the 18 seats up for election in November while holding onto the seats they currently have. Winning back a majority in the state senate and dismantling the trifecta would give Republicans considerably more negotiating power during the 2021 legislative session.

Both states also have highly competitive and publicized U.S. Senate races, which can have an impact on the rest of the races down the ballot. However, studies have shown that more than 30% of voters will not fill out their entire ballot in some years. Make sure you are informed about the candidates running in your state and local elections and take time to learn about their views on issues that are important to you. A little research will ensure that you are fully prepared to exert your civic duty.
