The SEMA Show is a major attraction in Las Vegas, and most attendees and exhibitors will spend the majority of their time either on the Show floor or participating in the many educational and networking opportunities afforded by the event.

But Las Vegas is also one of the premier recreational venues in the world, offering not only world-class entertainment from all facets of show business, but also a wealth of cultural, historical and outdoor possibilities.

Check out the official Las Vegas tourism site at www.visitlasvegas.com to discover a host of shows, activities, restaurants and more. And be sure to review the discounted rates for many of the city’s major attractions in the “Best Bang for the Buck” sidebar on p. 266. Meanwhile, browse the accompanying photos and captions to get a taste of what’s on tap.

Imperial Palace Car Collection:

Touted as the world’s largest and finest classic car showroom, the Imperial Palace collection is said to display $100 million worth of vehicles, some of which are for sale.

Visitors can see more than 250 antiques, musclecars and specialty-interest cars and trucks. The showroom is open from 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. daily. Call 702-794-3174 or visit www.imperialpalace.com and select “The Auto Collections” from the left navigation menu for information about tickets and reservations. The Imperial Palace hotel is located at 3535 Las Vegas Blvd. South in Las Vegas.

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Arts:

Those interested in art of a more formal variety might want to venture into the Bellagio Hotel and Casino’s gallery of fine art. The gallery prides itself on presenting works by some of the world’s most compelling artists in what it calls “intimate exhibitions.”

The current exhibit, entitled “A Sense of Place: Landscapes from Monet to Hockney,” features paintings, photographs and videos showcasing the works of artists, such as Claude Monet, Marc Chagall, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Robert Rauschenbergg, Christo, Vik Muniz and many others. Visit here for complete information.

Bootleg Canyon Biking:

Get into the great outdoors on the Bootleg Canyon Bike Trails in Boulder City, Nevada, just under 30 miles from Las Vegas.

This wide-ranging series of manmade trails includes both cross-country and downhill-specific trails. There are 36 miles of routes (and you can make more by combining them to your heart’s desire), and there is a shuttle to the top for those who need a boost.

Be warned that the weather can be variable in November, and bring plenty of water! Visit here for details, maps and further information.

The Roller Coaster at New York-New York:

Kids of all ages love roller coasters, and the one at New York-New York carries its passengers up 203 ft. and then zips them down 144 ft. at a speed of 67 miles per hour.

The Roller Coaster is said to simulate “a jet fighter’s barrel roll while taking you on the famous ‘heartline’ twist.”

Prices range from $14 for an individual to $60 for a family of four, which includes ride tickets plus two 5-x7-in. close-up photos. Visit www.newyorknewyork.com and find “The Roller Coaster” under the “Attractions” menu for more information.

Hoover Dam and Lake Mead:

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, wildlife and sightseeing all year long.

Located about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, the Lake Mead Visitor Center is open from 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., seven days a week. It provides information about new developments within the recreation area, including maps, books, games and toys. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/lake or call 702-293-8990.

Pinball Hall of Fame:

Many of us grew up playing old-fashioned pinball before there was any such thing as a video game.

The Pinball Hall of Fame is touted as the world’s largest pinball collection. Open to the public, a not-for-profit corporation runs the Hall of Fame, and all of the games belong to a single club member named Tim Arnold. The machines range from ’50s vintage up to the ’90s. Because it’s a non-profit organization, non-denominational charities receive any excess earnings.

The Pinball Hall of Fame is located at 1610 E. Tropicana in Las Vegas (across from the Liberace Museum).

Pole Position Raceway:

Got a craving for some wheel-to-wheel competition? Pole Position Raceway offers multiple options.

When you go by yourself or with a group, standard kart races last about 10 minutes, with separate categories for adults and kids. Pole Position also offers group and party packages that feature reserved times for private racing in two-, three- and four-race formats. There are also options for even larger groups who wish to rent the whole facility. The raceway is located at 4175 South Arville in Las Vegas. For information, call 702-227-7223.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area:

Located 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip on Charleston Blvd./State Route 159, the 195,819-acre Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area includes a 13-mile scenic drive, more than 30 miles of hiking trails, rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, road biking, picnic areas and a visitor center with exhibit rooms and a book store.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the spectacular landscape is not to be missed. For more information, visit www.redrockcanyonlv.org or call 702-515-5350.

Lied Discovery Children’s Museum:

If you’re bringing the family to Las Vegas for the SEMA Show, be sure the kids get a chance to visit the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum. It includes more than 100 hands-on exhibits that delve into the arts and sciences, nature, music and the humanities as well as traveling exhibitions.

The interactive exhibits are designed for everyone from toddlers to adults, and the museum offers packages for group visits, including award-winning birthday-party programs. The museum is located at 833 Las Vegas Blvd. N. in Las Vegas. Call 702-382-5437 for information about hours and current programs.

Golf in Vegas:

There is a huge variety of golf courses in and around Las Vegas, such as the Arroyo Golf Club at Red Rock; the Bali Hai, Mandalay Bay; the Rhodes Ranch Golf Club; the Snow Mountain course at Paiute Golf Resort; the TPC Las Vegas and dozens more.

The well-kept fairways, water features and lush vegetation make each one a treasure. This photo is of the Bali Hai, a par 72 layout that plays 7,002 yards from the tips, but SEMA Show week might be a good jumping off point for a few extra days on the links. Visit here to see a great selection of local courses.

Atomic Testing Museum:

Atomic bombs were set off just 65 miles from Las Vegas at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), which was the premier nuclear testing facility in the United States from 1951– 1992. The 8,000-sq.-ft. Atomic Testing Museum details the history of the NTS and the world events that brought it into being. Video displays and galleries explain the background behind the atmospheric tests, underground testing and the environmental impacts that eventually led to the end of testing throughout the world.

The museum is located at 755 E. Flamingo Rd. in Las Vegas and is open seven days a week. For information about hours, visit www.atomictestingmuseum.org or call 702-794-5151.

Las Vegas Natural History Museum:

What is now Las Vegas once lay beneath an ancient sea, and the Las Vegas Natural History Museum provides a slice of what life was like in the locale’s ancient past. Located just south of the intersection of the Vegas Strip and Washington Ave. next to Cashman Field, the museum also features exhibits on the African savannah, desert life and Nevada’s prehistoric past. From sharks to snakes and from dinosaurs to badgers, the museum offers a wealth of entertaining and educational exhibits. It is located at 900 N. Las Vegas Blvd. in Las Vegas. Call 702-384-3466 or visit here for more information.

SEMA News—November 2011

Innovation: It’s Not Just for Products Anymore

Chris Kersting, SEMA President and CEO

This year’s SEMA Show once again has innovation at every turn, including the pages you are now holding in your hands. Regular SEMA News readers will notice that, for the first time ever, we have combined the SEMA Show Directory with the Show issue of the magazine so that both publications reach more readers earlier. Many of you first reading this in your offices will now have a chance to preview the SEMA Show Directory two weeks prior to the Show, which should make your Show planning faster, easier and more productive.

For those of you first reading this in Las Vegas—welcome to the greatest showcase of automotive ideas on earth!

Great ideas are the driving force that started our automotive specialty-equipment community in the first place, leading to innovative products and a world of performance advancements. And today, our industry is applying innovative direction to the businesses themselves as a means to achieve growth and success in today’s challenging market. Companies are finding paths to international markets; they’re adapting products for agriculture and defense; they’re applying their expertise to product development beyond automotive; and they are plumbing the depths of digital media and marketing to be where the customer is. Meanwhile, growth from these new directions fuels the core mission: building and delivering the world’s greatest selection
of equipment to power every aspect of automotive passion!

What are we seeing on the upside? A look at our SEMA Show data indicates that specialty performance businesses are definitely on the throttle as they set themselves up for 2012.

  • Exhibitor participation is up significantly for the second year running.
  • We have a substantial increase in first-time exhibitors. These new companies span all 12 Show categories, and a large percentage of them are bringing new energy to traditional core sections, such as Racing & Performance.
  • Media attendance is up sharply, ensuring that Show coverage will generate buzz for weeks and months after we pack up and leave Las Vegas. We also see huge interest among opinion leaders—well-connected bloggers and cyberspace enthusiasts—who will no doubt find lots of hot tidbits to tweet, blog and post about.
  • Buyer attendance is up for the second straight year. This year, buyers and other attendees committed early and have booked more room nights than usual, taking advantage of lower rates among Show-block hotels. That tells us that aggressive buyers and motivated exhibitors are ready to connect in big numbers.

Like our member companies, your association team has also been hard at work implementing innovative ideas to help member companies succeed. In July, we launched a revamped SEMAShow.com website so that attendees and exhibitors were able to register more easily than ever, locate the best possible booth space and get Show information more easily.

We also worked on enhancing product exposure opportunities so that exhibitors can get the most bang for their buck. This year, the popular New Products Showcase—themed Ideas Alive—will also include a section for Featured Products so that exhibitors can get more exposure for products that might have been introduced in a prior year.

Completely new this year is the inaugural SEMA Cruise—Presented by Chevrolet Cruze. We’ve set up some grandstand seating to watch the rolling car show that takes place on teardown day. We’ve gotten the word out so that media and attendees know about this exciting new feature, and we predict that photos and video will spread across the automotive world very quickly.

As the Show opens, we’ll be looking forward to getting your feedback about these new features. And we look forward to seeing the annual explosion of innovation that the industry will unveil this year.

See you on the Show floor!

—Chris Kersting, SEMA President and CEO

Ford Celebrates Milestone With Special Displays

Ford Motor Co. will have something extraordinary to celebrate at the 2011 SEMA Show: 110 years of racing supremacy. In 1901, driving a car called Sweepstakes, Henry Ford defeated Alexander Winton in a race whose prize money helped him found his automobile company two years later. That company will commemorate Henry’s victory and Ford’s racing heritage this November in Las Vegas with a unique booth display and an outdoor exhibition of Ford racing prowess. In addition to highly modified examples of its current car and truck lines, the Ford booth #22200 (Central Hall) at the SEMA Show will feature examples of its classic racing lineage. Check out Ford’s rolling legacy in the accompanying photos.

1901 Sweepstakes: This car started it all. Henry Ford raced it against Alexander Winton and won. After wining that race, Ford was able to obtain the financing he needed to start Ford Motor Co. Visit here for more information.

1967 GT40 Mark IV: Carroll Shelby built this car, which was driven by Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt to win the 1967 Lemans 24-hour race.

1965 Lotus-Ford 38: Jim Clark was driving this vehicle when he won the 1965 Indianapolis 500—the first rear-engine car to win that race.

1970 Mustang: Parnelli Jones drove this pony to win the 1970 Trans Am Championship.

2011 Ford Fiesta: By Brian Deegan, this is the 2011 X Games-winning car.

2011 Mustang Drift Car: Vaughn Gittin Jr. drives this Mustang in the Formula Drift Series.

F-250 Super Duty: Built by Hajek Motorsports, this Super Duty set the Bonneville Salt Flats records for diesel- and bio-diesel-powered trucks. It reached a top speed of 182 mph.

2011 Fusion: Trevor Bayne drove this Fusion to victory in the 2011 Daytona 500—the 600th NASCAR win for Ford Motor Co.

2011 Ford Fiesta: The car driven by television personality and champion Tanner Foust.

1987 Thunderbird: This NASCAR Thunderbird was driven by Bill Elliott and still holds the record for the fastest NASCAR qualifying speed at 212.809 mph.

2011 Ford Fiesta: The car that Ken Block drives in his famous gymkhana videos.   2011 Mustang Funny Car: This is 15-time champion John Force’s NHRA Funny Car.

A Look at Some of the Coming Attractions

The SEMA Show is the industry’s premier trade event, where exhibitors and buyers come together to prepare for the coming year’s commerce. But it is also one of the greatest custom and collector car shows in the world, where the latest creations by master craftsmen are put on display. In some cases, these rolling sculptures are being revealed for the first time anywhere.

For the past few years, SEMA News has previewed some of these automotive artworks, and we’ve kept the tradition going for 2011. Enjoy this latest edition in the following pages, and get ready to see even more in Las Vegas!

SEMA News—November 2011

A Message From Paul “Scooter” Brothers, SEMA Chairman of the Board

“Scooter” Brothers, SEMA Chairman of the Board

To our very good friends, family and extended family:

It’s almost impossible to believe, but this is the 45th time the SEMA Show has been the reason for this family to get together, celebrate the past year and take a glimpse into the future. I say “family” because this industry has grown stronger by banding together for the past few years. What you see at this year’s SEMA Show is an example of what a family can do when it pulls together and pushes through tough times.

In the case of SEMA, we are comprised of all sorts of people. From major companies to the smallest jobber, from the oldest to the youngest, from every person on the SEMA staff to every member of the SEMA Action Network, we are all a part of SEMA. Working together like brothers and sisters, we have created everything you see at the Show. And yet, even though we lock arms in tough times, we compete like racers at the track and strive to be the best. The competitive spirit of every member of the SEMA family inspires each one of us to be better. And as we look around the SEMA Show each year, it’s easy to see how the passions of individual members have pushed the whole industry toward the goal line.

As Chairman of the Board, I am proud to say that the hard work and dedication of the SEMA Board of Directors, all of the members and the SEMA association staff have made the last 12 months a success—in times where some can’t say that. The SEMA Board continues to chart an exciting course, with several new and cutting-edge programs once again positioning SEMA as the number-one association for its members and making available the tools to remain strong in the future.

One important consideration for all members, large and small alike, is how the membership should best be represented by the SEMA Board of Directors. During your time at the Show, you will undoubtedly hear about a SEMA recommendation to streamline the Board of Directors. Having carefully considered the pros and cons, the Board believes that these changes are important for more effective and efficient leadership. As your Chairman, I urge each company to act on this important proposal and cast a thoughtful vote.

Finally, I want to extend a special welcome to the youngest generation of SEMA members. As this younger group enters this industry, their enthusiasm and ability to see new paths in a changing world will carry this association long into the future. I’m proud to welcome them to the family, and I know that they will some day be the leaders of the industry.

The passion that each of you demonstrates is what makes the SEMA Show the center of the automotive world, and each and every one of you should be proud of what you have accomplished. Thank you for attending the world’s greatest automotive specialty-equipment trade show ever. Enjoy yourselves while you are in Las Vegas. I thank you for coming, and I sincerely hope that you all have a great year in 2012.

Cordially,

Paul “Scooter” Brothers, SEMA Chairman of the Board

10 SEMA Show Opportunities

Tips for Getting Down to Business at the 2011 SEMA Show

By Michael Imlay

you’ll discover more than 1,500 new products plus the latest equipment and technology being developed by more than 2,000 exhibitors, including 500 first-timers alongside major manufacturers and new suppliers
The 2011 SEMA Show will concentrate products and networking opportunities under one roof, creating valuable access to new revenue streams, expanded sales and profits.

As the world’s premier automotive aftermarket trade event, the 2011 SEMA Show concentrates a vast number of attractions and opportunities under one roof. So many, in fact, that it’s practically impossible to know about them all unless you’re highly organized. Step inside the massive Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) for the SEMA Show, and you’ll discover more than 1,500 new products plus the latest equipment and technology being developed by more than 2,000 exhibitors, including 500 first-timers alongside major manufacturers and new suppliers. With the Show rapidly approaching, we suggest the following tips for attendees wishing to take full advantage of the event’s many opportunities.

1. Hit the Ground Running

Whether you sign up online ($25) or via fax or mail ($50), pre-registration by October 18 saves you more than money. It buys you time that you won’t be spending in a registration line at the Show when you could be immediately discovering new products, making industry contacts and attending educational events instead. If you miss the October 18 deadline, you can still take advantage of online registration at on-site prices from October 19 right up to the opening of the Show. No matter how you choose to register, you’ll find it much more profitable to do it before Show opening. For details, go to www.SEMAShow.com and click on “Attend Show.”

2. Stay Smart With Travel Planners

Obviously, hassle-free hotel accommodations that are convenient to the Show will keep you rested, energized and on time for all of your planned activities. Booking your lodging through Travel Planners, the only official SEMA Show Housing Bureau, will ensure the best rates possible at quality hotels that offer quick and easy commuting to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Plus, by using Travel Planners, you’ll pay no resort fees (except for the The Signature at MGM Grand, which mandates them) and have access to exclusive hotel profiles that include descriptions, amenities, photos and maps for every official hotel. Not only can you also manage reservations (view, change or cancel) online, but you’ll also find your data delivered in real time, 24/7. For details, go to www.SEMAShow.com, click on “Attendees,” and scroll-down to select “Travel & Lodging.”

3. Enjoy Discounted Transportation

Buy your ticket ahead of time and get an Unlimited 3-Day Pass for $24 (normally $28 at ticket vending machines); an Unlimited 4-Day Pass for $32
Discounted monorail tickets and complimentary shuttle busses provide quick, convenient access to the Las Vegas Convention Center, home of the 2011 SEMA Show.

The Las Vegas Monorail is convenient to most hotels booked through Travel Planners and will drop you off directly in front of the 2011 SEMA Show. Even better, the city is offering exclusive discounts to SEMA Show attendees. Buy your ticket ahead of time and get an Unlimited 3-Day Pass for $24 (normally $28 at ticket vending machines); an Unlimited 4-Day Pass for $32 (not available at ticket vending machines); and an Unlimited 7-Day Pass for $50 (also not available at ticket vending machines). With trains arriving every few minutes, the Monorail also connects you to the city’s glitz and glamour of world-class restaurants, shows, shops, clubs, hotels and casinos in a safe, clean and climate-controlled environment. Save time and dollars by purchasing your tickets online now.

In addition, complimentary shuttle bus service is available between the LVCC and most official SEMA Show hotels. Pick-up locations at the LVCC are between Central and North Halls, behind the Grand Lobby by Freight Door 10 and in the front and back of South Hall. Buses pick up every 20 to 30 minutes. For a detailed schedule, go to www.SEMAShow.com/shuttle-bus-information.

4. Power Up Your Online Marketing

Today’s businesses rise and fall on online marketing, with technology and tactics changing by the minute. The SEMA Show’s Online Marketing Conference—Powered by eBay Motors, is a can’t-miss opportunity to learn more about the most critical online trends affecting your business. Held Monday, October 31, the daylong event addresses such topics as landing-page optimization, Facebook, mobile site development, search-engine optimization and marketing, website analytics, video marketing, reputation management and more. Split into fundamental and intermediate tracks, the conference is presented by leading Internet experts. Discounted pre-registration (available online) runs until October 17, after which onsite registration is required.

5. Expand Your Business Knowledge

Attendees can hit the ground running through online pre-registration, which saves time you’d certainly rather use to see and experience the Show.
Attendees can hit the ground running through online pre-registration, which saves time you’d certainly rather use to see and experience the Show.

From Monday, October 31, through Friday, November 4, SEMA Show Education Days touch on virtually every topic affecting aftermarket businesses and are a great way to learn firsthand what’s new and cutting-edge in the marketplace. The SEMA Education Institute (SEI) roster includes more than 50 free courses and several “pay-to-attend” educational events this year. Buyers will particularly appreciate business seminars on marketing, customer service, management and more. Exclusive to registered SEMA Show participants, these learning opportunities are designed to immediately deliver practical tools that can be implemented by you and your staff the first day back from Las Vegas. For details, visit www.SEMAShow.com/education.

6. One-Stop Shopping for New Products

Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase is the SEMA Show’s number-one destination, and with good reason. There’s no better way to examine all of the industry’s hottest new products in one fell swoop. Plus, for 2011, Ideas Alive adds a Featured Products section where exhibitors also get to display their most popular products, regardless of introduction date. Located this year in the upper level, east end of South Hall, the New Products Showcase represents 25,000 sq. ft. of innovations—all barcoded so you can easily capture and download essential product information. (The data is available in several formats, including one for smartphones, with scanners also available free to buyers and media.) Best of all, the Showcase opens each morning at 8:00 a.m., prior to main Show hours, allowing you to beat the crowds.

7. New Products Award Breakfast

the 2011 SEMA Show presents firsthand looks at those products installed on the hottest street rods, musclecars, exotics, compacts, light trucks and more
The SEMA Show is renowned for firsthand looks at the world’s hottest street rods, incredible musclecars, exotics, sport compacts, light trucks and more.

The 2011 SEMA Show New Products Awards Breakfast promises to be yet another key attraction, as it is every year. Scheduled for Tuesday, November 1, from 7:30 a.m.–8:45 a.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton, the event lands on the Show’s opening day just before Show-floor opening. During the breakfast, the best new products from the New Products Showcase are announced, with honors presented to their exhibitors. Attendees will be among the first to find out who walks off with awards this year, but more than a great product tip-off for buyers, the breakfast is also a highly prized networking opportunity. Attendance is free, but space is limited, so tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To order your tickets, visit here and click on “Buy Tickets” in the “Attendee” window.

8. The SEMA Awards:Find Out the Hottest Vehicle Trends

In addition to displays and in-depth appraisals of the latest automotive specialty-equipment products, the 2011 SEMA Show presents firsthand looks at those products installed on the hottest street rods, musclecars, exotics, compacts, light trucks and more. In fact, you’ll want to pay special attention to the SEMA Award winners, which will be announced on the Show’s first day, Tuesday, November 1. Presented in four categories—Hottest Car, Hottest Truck, Hottest Sport Compact and Hottest 4x4-SUV—the SEMA Awards recognize the year’s top trendsetting vehicles based on exhibitors’ choice. Show organizers will survey qualified booth vehicles to identify the most prominent models in each award category and tally them all to identify which platforms enthusiasts prefer to modify. For buyers and manufacturers alike, these vehicles act as ideal barometers of trending products in the marketplace.

9. Get a Handle on the Latest Tech Advances

Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase is the SEMA Show’s number-one buyer destination. It’s set up to offer one-stop shopping of all the industry’s hottest new innovations, with free barcode scanners to make information acquisition quick and easy.

Technology has been changing rapidly, as new regulations and new concepts evolve from OEM sources. These trends can affect suspension, powertrains, safety and infotainment, and staying abreast of the latest developments can be daunting. Yet for aftermarket jobbers and manufacturers, anticipating the effect of future innovations is crucial. Thankfully, the SEMA Show’s Vehicle Technology Center (VTC) provides in-depth information and hands-on understanding from leading industry experts relating to advanced vehicle technologies, emerging systems and cooperative programs. This area is designed to enhance communications between OEMs and the aftermarket. For 2011, the SEMA Show unveils a significantly expanded VTC experience, including a theater, exhibits and sessions designed to inform and educate attendees on the technological changes that promise to revolutionize the industry. The VTC is located in Booth #35185 of the upper South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. For more information, visit here.

10. Get More From SEMA

As a trade association, SEMA is much more than its annual Show. The association also offers business insurance, freight-savings, consumer credit programs and expert research relating to both domestic and international products and markets. Plus, SEMA provides legislative advocacy, career development and training, employee recruitment, industry news, international relations and technology transfer programs that provide CAD and other design data directly from manufacturers. Members also get access to all of the organization’s networking events. Make sure to visit the Show’s Association Center in the Grand Lobby (just outside the North Hall) to learn about all of the year-round opportunities of SEMA membership.

Roy Littlefield, TIA Executive Vice President

On behalf of the Tire Industry Association (TIA), I would like to welcome you to Las Vegas and to this year’s Global Tire Expo—Powered by TIA! We hope you find everything you need to make your business a stronger and more dynamic enterprise.

We’re excited and pleased that last year’s Expo was such an overwhelming success. Over the past year, we have continued our work with our valuable partner—SEMA—in order to make this year’s Expo even better.

We also hope you’ll attend our world-class educational session tracks this year: TPMS at 10, Truck Tires at 10, Tires at 2 and Management at 4. These sessions will provide fresh, relevant and useful information, and they’ll be led by the top experts in their field. Plus, you’ll have the best of both worlds: You’ll be able to take advantage of these educational opportunities while still having plenty of time to be on the floor to learn about the latest technology; catch up with current vendors and customers; and meet new vendors and customers.

We have also created a new educational session track: Green @ Noon. As the name implies, it will feature leading experts who will discuss the pressing topics concerning environmental issues in the tire industry and how they can impact and benefit tire dealers.

We hope you will take some time during the Show to stop by our booth #40049 in the South Hall.

If you’re not currently a TIA member, you can learn how membership has the potential to save you thousands of dollars on products and services you use every day, such as HM Care Advantage health insurance, business insurance from Federated Insurance, sales training from ContactPoint, package shipping and more. You’ll also get discounts on our best-in-class training programs, as well as on our special events, such as the 2012 OTR Conference. Discover what thousands of TIA members already know—a membership in TIA can actually pay for itself.

Finally, whether you are an exhibitor or attendee, your support of the Expo and TIA helps keep our industry strong. Again, on behalf of everyone at TIA, thank you, and we hope you have a successful and enjoyable time!

SEMA News—November 2011

LEGISLATIVE AND TECHNICAL AFFAIRS

Law and Order

By Steve McDonald

Law and Order is an update of some of the most recent federal and state legislative and regulatory issues that could potentially impact the automotive specialty-equipment industry. These include issues affecting small-business owners and their employees.

State Update

California Tire Pressure Checks:

All California automobile service providers are required to check tire pressures for every vehicle being maintained or repaired at their facilities as of September 2010. The law applies to auto maintenance/repair providers but not to auto parts distributors/retailers, auto body/paint facilities, auto glass installers or wreckers/dismantlers.

The California legislature recently unanimously passed a bill to clarify that tire-pressure gauges used for these purposes must be accurate within 2 psi. The legislation also allows the service provider to refuse to check the pressure if the tire is “unsafe” or damaged. Under the law, service providers are required to inflate the tires to the recommended tire-pressure rating. The provider must note on the invoice that the tire inflation service was completed and then keep a copy of the service invoice for at least three years. The rule applies to all vehicles weighing less than 10,000 lbs.

Illinois Antique Vehicles:

SEMA-supported legislation to provide for an expanded-use antique vehicle registration class that would allow antique vehicles and replicas to be driven without limitation during the warmer part of the year (April 1 through October 31) was signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn.

Under the new law, expanded-use antiques are limited to traveling to and from car shows, exhibitions, servicing or demonstration during the colder months (November 1 through March 31). Regular antique vehicle registration is still available for a lower fee to hobbyists who would prefer to operate their vehicles on only a limited-use basis throughout the year.

The expanded-use antique registration plate will be available at an annual fee of $45. The limited-use antique plate remains available at a fee of $13 for a two-year registration. In Illinois, an antique vehicle is defined as a motor vehicle more than 25 years of age, a bonafide replica or a fire-fighting vehicle more than 20 years old that is not used as fire-fighting equipment. The law becomes effective on January 1, 2012.

Nevada Emissions Exemption:

SEMA submitted comments to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles in support of a proposed regulation that would exempt classic vehicles and classic rods, among other hobby vehicles, from emissions testing if the owner certifies that the vehicle has not been driven more than 5,000 miles the previous year. Currently, these vehicles are subject to a 2,500-mile-per-year limit to qualify for an emissions exemption and must pass an initial two-speed idle emissions inspection to qualify. The proposal is the product of legislation passed earlier this year by the Nevada State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Brian Sandoval.

Michigan Vehicle Miles-Traveled Tax:

SEMA is supporting Michigan legislation that would prohibit the state from imposing a vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) tax or mileage-based user fee on motor vehicles. This prohibition would also include any toll based on global-positioning satellites or similar programs that would provide for the locational tracking of private motor vehicles or users. In addition, the bill prohibits the state from accepting funding to implement a study or pilot program for the same purposes. As a general matter, SEMA opposes VMT taxes but supports policies that balance the interests of the motoring public with reasonable means to reduce reliance on foreign oil and create incentive-laden programs to help clean the air.

Federal Update

Federal Red Tape: Last January, President Obama issued an Executive Order directing all federal agencies to identify unnecessary regulations that hinder economic growth. In response, the agencies have identified more than 500 regulatory requirements that can be dropped and would potentially save $10 billion in productivity and reduced paperwork. A few of the regulatory changes would impact the auto industry. For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) intends to reduce reporting and record keeping for its gasoline/diesel regulations and to harmonize its greenhouse gas and fuel-economy standards. Nevertheless, SEMA and many in the business community contend that the reforms do not go far enough in lessening regulatory burdens, pointing to other candidates for change such as health care reform and greenhouse gas regulations for stationary sources.

Ozone Standard: In a move welcomed by SEMA, President Obama directed the EPA to withdraw its proposal to tighten the national air quality standards for ozone, the main ingredient in smog. Ozone forms when nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compound emissions from smokestacks, tailpipes and other sources combine in sunlight. Smog is created when particulates are added to the mix. The current ozone level is 75 parts per billion. The EPA was seeking to reduce the level to 60–70 parts per billion, contending that this range was necessary to address heart and respiratory illnesses associated with smog. The President cited the need to reduce regulatory burdens and uncertainty while the economy continues to recover. The standard could have cost as much as $90 billion a year to implement, with manufacturers, oil refiners and utilities bearing most of the costs.

Heavy-Duty Vehicle CAFE Standards: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and EPA have established fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide (CO2) standards for work trucks, buses and other medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. The first-time standards begin in model-year ’14 and cover a diverse range of vehicle types and uses. The vehicles are divided into three major categories: combination tractors (semi-trucks), heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans, and vocational vehicles (such as delivery trucks and transit buses). There are additional subcategories that are intended to provide a flexible structure for achieving specific goals. The standards are expected to achieve 10%–20% savings in fuel consumption by model-year ’18. The fuel-efficiency standards will also reduce CO2 emissions, since carbon dioxide is a direct byproduct when carbon-based fuels are burned.

Employee Rights Poster: As of November 14, 2011, businesses will be required to display a poster informing workers of their right to unionize and bargain collectively with the employer. The 11- x 17-in. notice is required under a rule issued by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) following an extensive rulemaking procedure. The poster can be downloaded for free from the NLRB website. The U.S. Department of Labor already requires companies to display workplace posters for federal minimum wage, polygraph protection, OSHA-job safety rules and several other federal labor laws. State agencies that regulate employers/workers may also have similar posters covering compensation, leave, job-safety and similar workplace issues. SEMA News—November 2011

Reaching Race Fans

REQUIRED READING

This month, we’re highlighting a few publications written for race fans. While these publications focus primarily on consumer events, they are important to industry professionals because they reach thousands of active and loyal consumers. These publications do a great job informing their readers about our industry’s products as well as relaying important information, such as legislation updates. We encourage the industry to support these publications and add them to your list of required reading.

Race Pages

The monthly magazine, which is published by the National Street Rod Association, is filled with articles and photos for race fans. With shorter lead times than many comparable publications, the news, coming-events listings and cars- and parts-for-sale sections are always timely and useful. In addition to featuring products from the SEMA Show, the magazine often includes legislative updates from SEMA as well as key consumer messages.

With 48 issues each year, National Dragster features timely news on race events and legislative issues. Published by the National Hot Rod Association for its members, the publication often includes one-on-one interviews and in-depth feature articles on race drivers. A monthly SEMA column brings readers noteworthy news just for consumers.

Race Pages, the official publication of the NMRA, reaches more than 69,000 serious Ford enthusiasts each month. Every issue is filled with serious tech, blue-oval news and rumors, NMRA event coverage and vehicle features. Given the publication’s coverage, it’s no surprise to see news and information from SEMA in the magazine.
