Network with Light Truck Accessory Professionals at the TORA Happy Hours

Light truck accessory professionals can expect a few new networking opportunities at this year’s SEMA Show. In addition to the annual awards reception, the Truck and Off-Road Alliance (TORA) will host a happy hour at the booth (#34151), Tuesday, November 5, and Thursday, November 7, from 4:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.

This event gives council members and those wondering how their business could benefit from membership a chance to meet and mingle. SEMA's Vice President of OEM and Product Development Programs Mike Spagnola will be present to share about the SEMA Garage on Tuesday and on Thursday, and Government and Public Affairs Manager Colby Martin will update attendees about the SEMA Action Network (SAN).

The Industry Awards Reception will take place Wednesday, November 6, from 5:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. at the Las Vegas Hotel Garden Patio. The evening will include food, networking and tributes to some of the most influential professionals in the industry during the awards presentations. Arrive early to rent a Pinewood racer in exchange for a $20 donation to SEMA Cares, and then compete for the title of Fall Nationals Top Eliminator.

Automotive restoration professionals will have many opportunities to connect with peers at the 2013 SEMA Show.

Networking and Industry Awards Reception

The Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) will lead off the week with its annual Industry Awards Reception, Tuesday, November 5. The event will take place in Ballrooms D and E of the Las Vegas Hotel from 5:15 p.m.–7:30 p.m.

“We intentionally keep the reception about networking,” said ARMO Chair Alex Tainsh. “We want to keep the program part short and allow attendees the chance to meet and greet with others in the industry.”

In addition to networking opportunities, the council will take time during the event to honor some of the individuals whose life and work have made a significant impact on the industry.

General Membership Meeting

ARMO will also conduct a general membership meeting in Conference Rooms 1–3 at the Las Vegas Hotel, Wednesday, November 6, from 7:15 a.m.–9:00 a.m.

“This is a great venue for newer members to find out what ARMO does—what it accomplishes for the marketplace and its members,” stated Chair-elect Dennis Roberts. “It’s also a good place for members to give input and voice their opinions.”

ARMO Roundtable

The Builder’s Roundtable offers an additional way for individuals to stay informed about issues facing the industry. This year’s event will be moderated by Tom Shay and will take place Thursday, November 7, at 9:30 a.m. in the Las Vegas Convention Center, meeting room N262. Geared toward small businesses and shop owners, the event allows companies to exchange challenges, opportunities and solutions.

Vehicle Technology Meeting to Take Place at Clemson University

SEMA members are invited to an open meeting and tour of Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Technology (CU-ICAR). This is an important opportunity for manufacturers, those in the product-development industry and any other members who are interested in helping to shape a new benefit. Through a partnership with CU-ICAR, SEMA will host an open meeting and tour of the Greenville, South Carolina, campus, Tuesday, November 19, from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

The tour will give active SEMA members a unique opportunity to tour the campus and learn about the many resources available, including testing facilities in the areas of advanced powertrain systems, automotive systems, manufacturing and materials, vehicle performance and vehicular electronics. The behind-the-scenes look at the world-class vehicle research facility will help members see how they can take advantage of the resources to benefit their companies.

In addition to the tour, attendees will be invited to stay for an open meeting of SEMA’s Emerging Trends and Technology Network (ETTN), Truck and Off-Road Alliance (TORA), Professional Restylers Organization (PRO) and Wheel and Tire Council (WTC). The groups will discuss how members can best utilize resources available through the facility.

Lastly, we will be asking those in attendance to participate in breakout groups focused on a future education program to take place at CU-ICAR in the late-spring or early-summer 2014. This will be a great opportunity for volunteers, council and network members and staff to work side-by-side to build the next learning opportunity for SEMA members. New Hot Rod Creation to Be Unveiled at HRIA Booth

Hot-rod and restoration professionals are invited to kick off the 2013 SEMA Show by witnessing the unveiling of Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop’s latest creation. This new vehicle will be displayed to the public for the first time on Tuesday, November 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the HRIA Booth #23395.

While at the booth, attendees can also view the Pinewood Builder’s Challenge finalists, which first raced at the annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Races in Pomona, California, last summer. Each of the cars will be auctioned during the HRIA reception to benefit the charities supported by SEMA Cares—Childhelp and Victory Junction. The live portion of the auction will include three award winners: the Race Winner, Best Engineered and Best in Show. The remaining eight cars will be sold in a silent auction, along with a limited edition signature model Gibson Les Paul guitar and a trail can tool box custom pinstriped by Von Hot Rod.

The annual HRIA reception is the second-largest event during Show week, with more than 600 attendees. It will take place Wednesday, November 6, from 5:15 p.m.–8:30 p.m. in Ballrooms A and B of the Las Vegas Hotel. In addition to the auction, the evening’s festivities will include a tribute to those serving in the military by the Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard, awards presentations and plenty of time for networking.

The reception is open to all hot-rod industry professionals. Interested Show attendees may pick up tickets at the HRIA Booth.

Hot Rod Council to Present Education Day at 2014 Detroit Autorama

The annual SEMA Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Education Day will be held, for the first time, in conjunction with the Detroit Autorama—the 60-year-old custom car show taking place in March 2014 at Cobo Hall in Detroit. The program will consist of 24 sessions, each led by a hot-rod parts manufacturer educating attendees about product features, benefits and installation guidelines.

“For more than 10 years, HRIA Education Day has proven to be a key event for helping manufacturers share detailed, and sometimes technical, information about their products with their customers,” said Jim Skelly, SEMA director of councils. “Holding the Education Day program at the Detroit Autorama will allow HRIA members to expand and reach a new audience.”

HRIA previously held its Education Day program at the Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show in Indianapolis. The move to the Detroit Autorama will enable manufacturers to reach a new, expanded audience. Autorama, which is well known for having the world’s most coveted hot rods, prestigious awards competitions, as well as top celebrities and student programs, attracts more than 150,000 individuals annually. Education Day will take place Thursday, March 6, 2014 (the day before Autorama officially opens), and is open to all hot-rod shops and businesses, as well as to all Autorama attendees.

“As one the nation’s premier indoor custom car show, the Detroit Autorama attracts thousands of businesses and enthusiasts who are passionate and deeply vested in new hot-rod products,” said Peter A. Toundas, president of Championship Auto Shows Inc.—promoter of the event. “The HRIA Education Day program will add a valuable element to the event, giving attendees an opportunity to connect directly with manufacturers, which would be difficult for them to do on their own.”

This unique event brings together editorial staff from all over the world with racing and high-performance parts manufacturers for three days of 30-minute meetings each January. Nowhere else does a motorsports parts manufacturer have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with as many as 42 automotive journalists.

Space is limited to 100 MPMC-member manufacturers. Those who submit an application but are not selected for the 2014 event are automatically guaranteed a spot in the 2015 event. MPMC to Present “MPMC Education Day” at 2013 PRI Show

MPMC and PRI will present “MPMC Education Day” at the 2013 PRI Show, Wednesday, December 4, 2013. The event takes place at the Indiana Convention Center the day before the PRI Trade Show floor opens.

Patterned after the already successful HRIA Education Day, 15 MPMC-member companies will present one-hour product training presentations to PRI Trade Show attendees. Three seminars will each run concurrently over five, one-hour time slots beginning at 9:00 a.m.

“The HRIA Education Day is wildly successful,” said MPMC Chairman Vic Wood of Aeromotive. “The PRI Show seemed a perfect venue to try the same template for MPMC companies. We originally were planning to implement it in 2014, but after presenting the idea to John Kilroy and his PRI team, the decision was made to go for it this year. We’ll start with just the 15 companies this year, and see how it goes. But I see no reason why this shouldn’t expand to 30 or 40 companies one day, as soon as attendees realize the opportunity it presents.”

To emphasize the popularity of this program, the 15 registrations were received within one hour of registration opening, and a total 27 registrations were received within two hours. SEMA Data Co-op Congratulates Certified Reps

Earlier this year, the SEMA Data Co-op (SDC) announced the SDC/MRN Certification Program for manufacturer's reps to become certified ambassadors of the SDC. Reps are uniquely positioned between manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. Therefore, there is a need to ensure they understand the benefits of the SEMA Data Co-op program and can communicate them accurately to the marketplace.

To qualify for certification, manufacturer’s reps completed four training modules, each one having an exam at the end, to confirm their comprehension of the materials.

“I am pleased to say this program has been a big success, and we have more than 50 reps who are now certified, many of whom were acknowledged at the recent PWA Conference,” said Jim Graven, director of membership for the SEMA Data Co-op.

The first opportunity will come as a part of the Wheel and Tire Council (WTC) general membership meeting, Monday, November 4, from 1:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m. The meeting is open both to current council members and anyone who would like to learn more about how membership could benefit their company. Two education sessions will cover topics that include Clemson University's vehicle dynamics research on the effects of wheel and tire variance and how to improve customer service in today's media-saturated world.

Following the meeting at 3:30 p.m. in the Vehicle Technology Center, Council Chair Joe Schaefer will present initial findings of a collaborative research project with Clemson University's International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) about the effect of wheel plus-sizing on vehicle dynamics.

As always, the week also will provide networking opportunities. The annual WTC industry reception will take place Tuesday, November 5, at 5:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel pool. The evening will include food, a chance to connect with similar businesses and recognize the achievements of one very special professional who will receive the WTC Hall of Fame award. The council will also host students and faculty from the CU-ICAR as our special guests, so be sure to stop by and learn more. If you are planning to attend the reception, send in your RSVP today.

SEMA hosts 10 distinct councils and committees that represent focused niches within the specialty-equipment industry. These groups are comprised of elected volunteers (Select Committee) who guide and direct council activities while representing the membership at large.
