ARMO Member SpotlightThe SEMA Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) named American Autowire as the council’s latest member spotlight company.

In a recent interview with SEMA, Dave McKelvey, American Autowire VP of sales/marketing/R&D, shares information about the company’s history and upcoming projects.

SEMA: Tell us the story of your business. How did you start?

Dave McKelvey: Our founders, Michael Manning and Frank Colonna, were looking for something for their personal vehicles that didn't exist: A wiring harness to convert a non-console gauge first-gen Camaro to console gauges. They made the harness themselves, and then found that others were looking for the same type of product.
They started making these harnesses in a basement after they got home from their day jobs and would sell them at Carlisle and other swap meets. Eventually, they made the right connections to acquire obsolete tooling and licensing rights to blueprints to be able to reproduce a number of other GM wiring harnesses, which eventually became the Factory Fit product line of GM reproduction wiring harnesses. They had a small facility in Berlin, New Jersey, where they added a second product line made up of aftermarket wiring systems and accessories—their Street Rod Division.

That line of products took off, and they eventually outgrew the facility in Berlin. They moved to a facility in Bellmawr, New Jersey, where they occupied a portion of the building they are in today. Eventually, the Highway Series, Classic Update Series, and other wiring systems were designed and added to their catalogs. As the business continued to grow beyond their expectations, they brought Jim Cardona on as the Chief Operating Officer, and the three of them run the company to this day. We are busting at the seams in our 30,000-plus-sq.-ft. facility, and we are looking to expand our campus in 2022. We're also celebrating 35 years in business in 2022!

SEMA: What was your breakthrough moment?

DM: There were a couple, but the first and most prominent had to be when Michael and Frank launched the Factory Fit product line back in the ’80s. This is what really catapulted them to a position to quit their day jobs and focus solely on M Parker Autoworks, which was the name of the company before American Autowire.

SEMA: Tell us about your business now in 2022 and what projects are you working on?

DM: We are still growing at a rapid rate. Almost all of our facility is used for manufacturing, and we're looking to expand our footprint. As we've expanded into the Jeep/off-road segment, we're looking to add to our product offering with a Jeep XJ complete wiring system during the first half of 2022. We're very proud of the fact that we continue to be recognized as the wiring manufacturer of choice for our quality and how comprehensive our products are.

SEMA: Tell us about a particular project, product or build you are proud of.

DM: Our Highway 22 Universal Wiring System (now, the Highway 22 Plus) has been our flagship product for many years. Among professional builders and backyard builders alike, it is the go-to wiring system for any custom build. The other that I would mention is our entire Classic Update Series of year/make/model specific modernized wiring systems. They are the most complete wiring solution of their kind, and nothing else compares to them.

SEMA: What advice do you have for young professionals contemplating a career in the automotive aftermarket, particularly in the restoration segment?

DM: Get a mentor! You can read all you want (which I would still do), but the knowledge you can acquire from a lifelong car enthusiast will not always be in books. Also, keep in mind that being a part of our industry does not only mean you'll be spinning wrenches or shaping metal. Our industry needs accountants, sales and marketing professionals, human resources, etc. So even if your career path is in finance, but you're a hot rodder after work, you can combine them both with your career!

Fill out an ARMO member spotlight form to highlight how your company is contributing to the specialty-equipment industry. Selected candidates are eligible to be featured on ARMO’s social media, SEMA eNews and future ARMO member updates.

MAP Seminar SEMA ShowManufacturers often use pricing policies to establish brand value and increase consumer demand. Whether it’s establishing a Minimum Retail Price (MRP), or a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP), creating a successful and profitable pricing policy can be tricky. In fact, many manufacturers give up on pricing policies after an initial failed attempt.

Experts shared details and advice about pricing policies at the recent SEMA Show. Recordings of two sessions related to pricing policies are now available at www.SEMAShow.com/education. Both videos feature Rich Barsamian, vice president of sales and marketing at Advanced Clutch Technology, and Eugene F. Zeleck Jr., senior counsel at Taft Stettinius Hollister LLP—both who have extensive experience in writing and implementing resale policies.

  • MAP and Resale Price Policies: Everything You Wanted to Know, but Didn’t Know Who to Ask: Learn the difference between MRP and MAP, when a policy may be a good idea and everything you need to know about pricing strategies.
  • Make Your MAP or Resale Price Policy Sales-Centric!: Learn How a Pricing Policy Can Be Used Strategically as a Tool to Increase Sales.

“We’ve seen many cases where manufacturers put these [pricing policies] in place, usually from pressure from resellers, and they don’t enforce their policies. […] What happens?” said Zeleck. “You get a little credibility at the beginning, people say ‘oh that’s great, that’s wonderful’ but find out it’s not enforced and the whole thing falls apart. They’ve wasted time, money, energy and credibility.” New seminars are added to SEMA Virtual Education weekly at www.SEMAShow.com/education. Other recently added seminars include:

  • Industry Insiders Dish on the Future of the Specialty-Equipment Industry.
  • Future Trends: What’s Next for the Automotive and Specialty-Equipment Markets
  • Washington Automotive Update: What to Expect From Congress and the Biden Administration

Users of the SEMA Education website will need to create a personal profile upon their first visit, which will then provide access to all recordings in the library.

IAG
Stage 1 Cylinder Head Package for ’02–’05 WRX 2.0L S20 Castings, Combustion Chamber Modified
IAG

IAG Stage 1 Cylinder Head Package: IAG’s Stage 1-cylinder heads are intended for those looking for a cost-effective OEM+ replacement. Each package starts with brand new S20 WRX OEM head castings, directly from Subaru of America. The bare castings are visually inspected and then fixtured into our in-house Centroid 5-axis CNC Machine. This is one of the most advanced pieces of precision engine machining equipment in the world.

In the Centroid, the heads undergo a cam clearance machining process which removes material from the lifter area where larger lift and duration cam profiles are known to contact the castings. The Centroid also performs a chamber modification service to mimic the chamber shape of an STI. Then the heads are then fixtured in our Serdi 3.0 Valve Guide and Seat Machine to cut all intake and exhaust seats with a multi-angle valve job that suits the flow characteristics of GSC's standard size 36mm Intake and 32mm exhaust valves.

At this point, the heads' decks are resurfaced using our TS-3000 BlockMate, which cuts the aluminum to a smooth, even finish. Next, the heads are ultrasonically cleaned to remove debris and oils from the machining process. Finally, the heads are reassembled using GSC Single Valve Springs and Titanium Retainers along with GSC Viton stem seals.

U.S. Representative Bob LattaSEMA’s advocacy efforts are off to a fast start in 2022, as Callies Performance Products hosted U.S. Representative Bob Latta (R-OH) for a tour of the company’s Fostoria, Ohio, headquarters. The event marked Rep. Latta’s second time visiting Callies, as the tour provided him an opportunity to interact with company’s employees and watch them manufacture and assemble crank shafts, connecting rods and camshaft cores. The congressman was interested to discuss the most pressing issues facing Callies and the automotive aftermarket, including the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act (RPM Act), tariffs, the ability to hire workers, and federal policy proposals to incentivize electric vehicles. Rep. Latta is a co-sponsor of the RPM Act and a strong supporter of the legislation, volunteering to work with House Energy & Commerce Committee leadership to pass the bill.

“We are fortunate to have SEMA and PRI represent manufacturers, engine builders and racers to protect our source of livelihood,” said Heath Norton, vice president of Callies Performance Products. “We strive to offer value-based products that support a safe family friendly sport. It’s important that we pass the RPM Act to preserve our industry, which is an economic driver in many communities and provides hands-on STEM education to the youth of America. Thank you Rep. Latta for visiting Callies and for all you are doing to fight to protect manufacturing in America."

Rep. Latta represents Ohio’s 5th Congressional District, which includes the Northwest and West Central parts of the Buckeye State. The congressman is passionate about advancing policies that further economic prosperity and job creation, as his top priorities include balancing the budget, maintaining a strong national defense, and implementing common-sense government reforms. Rep. Latta is also member of the Congressional Automotive Performance Caucus along with the House Manufacturing Caucus.

Dust Settles on 2022 Dakar Rally After More Than 4,000 km of Racing
Nasser al Attiyah

Nasser Al-Attiyah on the Toyota GR DKR Hi-Lux T1+ of the Toyota Gazoo Racing during the podium of the Dakar Rally 2022 around Bisha, January 14, in Bisha, Saudi Arabia.

After more than 4,000 km of racing over treacherous Saudi Arabian terrain, the 2022 Dakar Rally has ended with Nasser Al-Attiyah, Chaleco Lopez, Dmitry Sotnikov and Sam Sunderland winning titles.

Al-Attiyah and navigator Mathieu Baumel (France) in the Toyota Hi-Lux T1+ took the lead on the first day and kept the top spot until the end for the Qatari driver’s fourth Dakar title and his first in Saudi Arabia. Al-Attiyah was pushed all the way by nine-time WRC winner Sébastien Loeb (France), who claimed his third Dakar podium finish, while Carlos Sainz (Spain), Stéphane Peterhansel (France) and Mattias Ekström (Sweden) all steered their electrical drivetrain-powered Audis to at least one stage win.

Both Giniel De Villiers (South Africa) and Kuba Przygoński (Poland) eventually had to settle for fifth and sixth respectively with Cyril Despres (France) getting more miles under his belt for his ambitious Gen-Z project—which hopes to return with a fully hydrogen-powered car—and a successful debut on four wheels for Laia Sanz (Spain) as she finished her 12th consecutive Dakar.

Lopez (Chile) made it back-to-back side-by-side victories by following up last year’s T4 triumph with an overall win in this year's T3 category, while Cristina Gutiérrez (Spain) also finished on the podium in third giving the Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team their first ever top-three result at the Dakar.

Sunderland (Great Britain) once again became champion, recapturing the title that he first won in 2017—the Dubai-based biker delivering GasGas their maiden Dakar victory as he becomes the first biker to win with different colors since Richard Sainct (France) did it two decades ago.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Matthias Walkner (Austria) got his fourth podium finish in third spot as Sunderland's GasGas team-mate Daniel Sanders (Australia) crashed out on the liaison section ahead of Stage 7.

Team Kamaz Master in the truck race kept their Saudi Arabian unbeaten run going as Sotnikov (Russia) made it two wins on the bounce with Eduard Nikolaev (Russia) in second, Anton Shibalov (Russia) third and Andrey Karginov (Russia) fourth.

The 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing season will see another familiar face in the Top Fuel ranks as fan favorite and 2018 US Nationals Top Fuel winner Terry McMillen will compete, on a limited schedule, in six to eight national events in 2022. He will continue to support his son Cameron’s junior dragster career. McMillen will race under the Dan Mercier Racing banner.

Dan Mercier Racing purchased the Terry McMillen Racing operation, so the veteran driver will be returning to the same livery that he earned his first No. 1 qualifier at the Dodge Nationals in 2020.

The team will be making further announcements in the coming weeks. The current plan includes possible races at the NHRA New England Nationals in Epping, New Hampshire, the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, and the fall NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMax Dragway outside of Charlotte, with additional events to be determined.
