SEMA Show
With exhibits included in the LVCC’s newly constructed West Hall,
the entire SEMA Show floorplan will be optimized and offers room
for new features and enhancements for an improved overall
attendee experience.

The 2021 SEMA Space Allocation process was completed in late June, with more than 1,700 companies selecting their booth locations at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC). The LVCC's halls are nearly full of exhibits, but booth space is still being reserved, and more exhibitors are expected to secure space until the Show opens on November 2.

Attendees planning on joining the industry at the 2021 SEMA Show can see who's exhibiting and where through the updated floorplan. If you have not yet registered for the SEMA Show, taking place Tuesday-Friday, November 2-5, visit www.SEMAShow.com/attendee to register.

For 2021, the Show will include exhibit space in the Las Vegas Convention Center’s newly constructed West Hall, a 1.4-million-sq.-ft. facility completed in January. The new facility includes exhibitors from the Restyling & Car Care Accessories, Powersports & Utility Vehicles, and Truck, SUV & Off-Road sections.

Earlier in June, the visitors of the World of Concrete convention were the first to use the new hall, and the event marked the first large-scale convention and tradeshow to be held in Las Vegas in 15 months.

In addition to the new hall, the newly constructed Loop—a high-speed, people-mover system that runs 40 ft. under the LVCC—will transport visitors between South, Central and West Halls. The World of Concrete successfully used the system to shuttle visitors through the 200-acre convention center.

SEMA Show organizers are 100% committed to hosting a successful 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. SEMA is working with Nevada authorities to deliver an outstanding event consistent with local health and safety requirements. Organizers look forward to delivering an event where industry members can connect, discover new products, and do business November 2–5.

SEMA is monitoring the evolving COVID-19 landscape and expects to have details in the coming weeks about what requirements will be in place for the SEMA Show. While subject to change, Nevada currently requires masks for indoor events such as trade shows. Nevada does not require proof of vaccination for trade shows.

The co-owners of AAPEX—the Auto Care Association and the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA)—recently announced that they will require proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID PCR test be administered prior to arrival in order to attend their 2021 event at the Venetian Expo & Caesars Forum. AAPEX co-owners are also evaluating the potential for onsite testing for those unable to be vaccinated or to obtain a negative PCR test prior to the show.  These measures will be administered through a third-party verification platform and on-site screening. Additionally, while subject to change, as of July 30, 2021, Nevada is requiring masks for all indoor events in Las Vegas. AAPEX will announce more details in the near future.

AAPEX’s requirements apply only to the AAPEX event and not for the SEMA Show.

The SEMA Show takes place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which was recently awarded the GBAC Star Facility Accreditation in recognition of superior health and safety measures implemented at its facility. In addition, SEMA has implemented its own measures, including wider aisles to provide more space to move around the show and reconfigured registration areas. Visit www.semashow.com/health-and-safety to learn more about the measures in place for the SEMA Show.

With more than 1,600 manufacturers & suppliers slated to participate and very strong buyer registration to date, now is the time to reconnect. To register for the SEMA Show, visit www.semashow.com/register.

Howell
Bill Howell (far left), ASA Driver Mike Miller and Marilyn Howell.

Automotive pioneer and industry legend Billy “Bill” Haegen Howell, passed away July 22, after a battle with ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Recognized as a leader in the development of Chevrolet performance engines and electronic fuel injection, Howell’s career with Chevrolet spanned from 1961–1987. While at Chevrolet, he became one of the core team members in the development of the new big-block Chevy motor that replaced the 409 while working as a test engineer in high-performance engine development for the Chevrolet Product Performance Group. During his career there, he also served as the company’s representative for many racing sanctions throughout the country, including the ASA series where they promoted first Pontiac, and then Chevy body styles.

Upon retirement from Chevrolet in 1987, Howell focused his attention on developing electronic fuel injection. At the time, only Corvette had port fuel injection and people were beginning to put Corvette engines into other classics. In 1988, Howell and his son Matt Howell formed Howell Engine Developments Inc., and began to build EFI wiring harnesses for Corvette/Camaro TPI engines and TBI V6/V8 fuel injected truck engines. Hot Rod magazine was quick to take notice and helped spread the word among race and performance enthusiasts in an article in May 1988. The business that started in the basement of their home was off and running with the phone ringing off the hook.

Soon thereafter, Chevrolet proposed to ASA that they switch to the new Corvette LS-1 engine in basically stock configuration—sealed engines with only a dry sump scavenge pump, cam change and valve springs. ASA had been looking for an option to leave the V-6 engines, as they were getting more expensive. Matt shares that Howell was able to get the contract to build the wiring harnesses and service the systems at the racetrack. GM ran a test program throughout the 1999 season to develop the package and bulletproof it. They switched the series to the LS-1’s in 2000, and they proved to be easy to tech and bulletproof. We maintained the harnesses and provided tech support for the series until ASA sold it.

The Indy Lights program started in 1993 and the Indy Racing League program started in 1995. “Of the 33 starters in the Indianapolis 500 in 1998, 1999 and 2000, 30 used engine wiring harnesses manufactured by Howell Engine Developments,” says Matt Howell.

Howell Engine Development, aka Howell EFI, today is a leading supplier of wiring harnesses for direct injection swaps for classic musclecars, Corvettes, Jeep and trucks for both automatic and manual transmissions with unlimited applications for Street Rod, Pro-Touring, Off-Road, Sand Rails, Street Machines and more. Howell EFI is now in the company’s 34th year of operations from its headquarters in Marine City, Michigan, with Matt Howell serving as president/co-founder.

Billy spent most of his life in Detroit, and then for many years in Lake St. Clair, near Algonac, Michigan. He retired in October 2003 to Punta Gorda, Florida. He is survived by his son and the co-owner of Howell Engine Developments Inc. Matthew Howell (Gina), and his daughters Deborah Bradford (Jerry) and Molly Reeves (Tracy), a sister, Barbara “Bobbie” (Pete) Petersen, and his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and beloved wife, Barbara Ann Caudle Howell.

The family has asked that memorial donations be made to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Doctors Without Borders or to the Wounded Warrior website. To read Billy Haegen Howell’s full obituary, visit here.

Nitrous Supply
Carbon Fiber Bottles
Nitrous Supply

Nitrous Supply has developed a pair of carbon fiber N2O bottle packages for serious racers—one with the upgrade “Super Flow” bottle valve and the other with the company's unique “PowerValve.”

The “Super-Flow” valve from Nitrous Supply has several important enhancements, including a 45-degree valve/outlet flow path for improved sealing and an AN-8 male safety port that facilitates running a hose to route any pressure discharge outside the vehicle—a key safety consideration. Even more flow can be obtained from the “PowerValve,” which has an .500-in. orifice and feeds off a large 5/8-in. siphon tube. The valve is ball-type with a 1/4-turn lever-action (instead of a knob) for quick operation. This design facilitates incorporating an external shut-off mechanism for added safety. It also has a 1/4 NPT port for auxiliary pressure boosting. Both valves feature a 1/8 NPT gauge port to enable users to keep tabs on nitrous pressure.

SEMA: What is most challenging part of running your business or job?

CW: The most challenging part of my job is keeping up with all of the new trends in the industry. However, while challenging, this is also the most fun part of my job.

SEMA: What are three qualities that got you to where you are today? How have these qualities benefited you?

CW: Being organized, detail-orientated and personable have been my qualities I've found have benefited me the most in my job. It's been a lifesaver to stay organized while working on multiple projects at once, detail-oriented while creating content for digital marketing campaigns or writing TV scripts, and being personable while connecting colleagues and networking at events.

SEMA: Who are your role models or mentors in the industry? How have they helped you along the way?

CW: I'm still learning and growing in the industry, however, one role model that comes to mind is our very own BOLT sales manager, Jason. He has taught me many things about different parts of the industry and I take his input as beneficial in growing in the automotive world.

SEMA: What is the best career advice you have received? How has this advice helped you either professionally or personally?

CW: The best career advice I've received is, "If you want to succeed, you need to stand out on your own. People respond to truth and authenticity." It's important to be creative and stand out both in my work and in how I hold myself out in the world.

SEMA: Have you always wanted to work in the automotive industry? What keeps you here?

CW: I did not once see myself in the automotive industry, but I'm sure glad that I found myself here. Things are always changing, and they're always exciting and fun. The atmosphere is one of the things I love the most. While networking I find that everyone is passionate not only about their specific roles, but also the industry as a whole. It's exciting to be a part of something much more – it’s more like a community.
