NMRARace Wrap: 2022 NMRA Spring Break Shootout

The 28th Annual NMRA Spring Break Shootout at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, Florida, March 4–6, kicked off the 2022 NMRA Holley Ford Nationals season.

NMRA VP Racing Madditives Renegade: Kieffer Simpson in his ’13 Mustang and Joel Greathouse in his KBX Performance-backed and Harts turbocharged Fox Mustang met in the final, where Greathouse carried the lead from start to stripe and his 4.554 at 155.81 mph shot scored a home run win while Simpson cruised to the runner-up finish.

JDM Engineering Limited Street: Samantha Moore met Stacey Roby, in the all-ProCharger finals before Moore went on to nearly duplicate her qualifying time with an 8.151 at 169.08 mph trip. Roby, however, left the line four-thousandths of a second too soon and gifted the win to Moore.

SunCoast Performance 8.60 Street Race: Jeff Bloem took home the Victor award in his ’91 Ford Mustang with an 8.626 at 161.88 mph pass and would have been the runner-up as he had a foul start if not for what went down in the opposing lane. Randy Thomas ran too quick for his ’10 Mustang GT500’s roll cage certification and class rules with an 8.483 at 160.59 mph, and his potential win was disqualified and downgraded to a runner-up finish instead, so Bloem was reinstated as the winner.

G-Force Racing Transmissions Coyote Stock: Charlie Booze Jr. in Scott Milhimes’s ’90 Ford Mustang met Randy Soper in the finals, who qualified second in his ’04 Mustang Mach 1. Although Booze had a hundredth of a second head start on the tree and a strong 9.764 at 134.04 mph, Soper delivered a knock-out blow with a 9.737 at 137.12 mph.

Richmond Gear Factory Stock: Mike Bowen ran his Gen 1 Coyote-powered ’71 Ford Maverick to the final round where he faced off against Chris Niebauer in his ’85 Mustang GT, but Bowen drove around him to reclaim the lead and lit the scoreboards with a winning 10.110 at 132.50 mph trip.

Exedy Racing Clutch Modular Muscle: Susan McClenaghan in her ’10 Mustang met Matt Harget who red-lighted in the final round. Her perfect weekend was capped off with a 9.401 at 145.39 mph jaunt on her 9.39 dial-in and another win.

HP Tuners Super Stang: Chris Parisi in his ’20 Ford Mustang dispatched Matt Johnson in the final round with a 12.007 at 93.79 mph run on an 11.88-second dial-in to Johnson’s 12.139 at 116.13 mph pass on an 11.96 dial.

ARP Open Comp: William Jones and Mel White met in the final round, where White left the line just 0.002 seconds too soon and defaulted the win light to Jones’ lane as he cruised through the traps with his ’68 Falcon to punctuate the win with a 9.348 at 144.40 mph run on his 9.31-second dial-in.

Detroit Locker Truck & Lightning: Bob Dill in his ’01 Ford F-150 met Johnny Lightning in the finals. Both ran over their mid-eight-second dial-ins, but Dill had the winning package, with a 8.916 at 140.53 mph pass.

SCT Ford Muscle: Reigning champion Danny Towe ran his ’70 Ford Mustang to the finals, where John Butsko, who had qualified fifth, ended his streak. Piloting his ’63 Ford Falcon, Butsko bested Towe with a 12.263 at 107.24 mph run on his 12.25 dial-in while Towe ran an 11.693 at 112.24 mph effort on an 11.75 dial.

TorqStorm Superchargers True Street: The overall win was claimed by Mike Jovanis, whose turbocharged ’89 Ford Mustang averaged 7.890 seconds across three runs. In second was Larry Albright, as his ’91 Mustang averaged 8.230 seconds. Adam Kuffel won the 9-second category on an average of 9.071-seconds, and Art Kalbhenn was the winner in the large 10-second group with his 10.052-second average. Other winners included Tom Barrett (11-second), Dale Aldridge (12-second), AJ Williams (13-second), William Papaleo (14-second), and Daniel Augustine (15-second).

BBK Performance Spring Break Shootout: Mike Jovanis repeated the feat with another commanding performance in eliminations as his 7-second ’89 Ford Mustang proved unbeatable. Turbocharged power propelled Jovanis through the traps in the final to close out his time in Florida with a 7.665 at 177.11 mph time slip while Randy Thomas collected the runner-up prize with an 8.469 at 160.56 mph blast.

TREMEC Stick Shift Shootout: The field was whittled down to Alex Martinez in his ’95 Mustang and Brian Biegert in his ’17 Mustang, and Martinez turned on the final round win light with a 10.051 at 111.31 mph pass on his 10.31 dial in while Biegert ran 11.687 at 115.38 mph on his 11.82 dial.

Race Pages Bracket Open: The last two men standing were Brad Gibbs and Todd Bowser in a Mustang versus F-150 final showdown, but the win went to Gibbs as he ran 5.342 at 123.72 mph in the eighth-mile on a 5.32 dial in and Bowser ran 7.856 at 86.18 mph on his 7.80 estimate.

The action will continue as the NMRA heads to Rockingham, North Carolina, for the 14th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport on April 22–24 at Rockingham Dragway.

SEMA ShowApplications for the 2022 SEMA Show are now available at www.semashow.com/buyabooth. The event taking place November 1-4 in Las Vegas is the premier automotive trade event in the world.

Manufacturers of automotive parts and accessories exhibit at the SEMA Show to promote new products, increase brand awareness, generate leads for future orders, build and strengthen relationships through in-person networking, and generate media coverage.

“Nothing compares to the SEMA Show. There’s a unique energy and mystique about the Show that makes it the ideal place for manufacturers to promote their products and raise brand awareness,” said SEMA Vice President of Events Tom Gattuso. “With buyers and media from all over the world in attendance, exhibitors have unlimited opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations that lead to profitable business partnerships.”

With more than 100,000 professionals in attendance at the 2021 SEMA Show, the event was Las Vegas’ No. 1-attended trade show last year. It also marked the Las Vegas Convention Center’s first full-capacity event since the pandemic. Exhibitors found valuable ROI by participating at the Show, with nearly all participants rating their experience as positive and noting that they plan to return in 2022.

“In-person interactions have greater meaning today than ever before,” said Gattuso. “The ability to communicate face-to-face, witness a live product demonstration, and take a photo with a celebrity is rare. The SEMA Show offers four full days of valuable activity both on and off the Show floor.”

In addition to more than 4.6 million of convention space, the SEMA Show includes interactive experiences, celebrity appearances, unique seminars with dynamic speakers, and unique panel discussions.

Companies may apply for space at the 2022 SEMA Show at www.semashow.com/buyabooth. To be included in the Priority Booth Space Selection Process, applications must be received by Monday, April 4. For more information, visit www.semashow.com.

Performance Racing Industry (PRI) is elevating its advocacy efforts by kicking off its third annual tour around the country, starting at the Progressive American Flat Track at Volusia Speedway Park in DeLeon Springs, Florida, March 11. During the 2022 Road Tour, PRI’s leading content-creation team will travel the country to visit businesses, race tracks, events and industry icons, generating videos and sharing stories about what the industry can do to help build, promote and protect motorsports.

PRI Road Tour

PRI is kicking off its third annual tour around the country, starting at the Progressive American Flat Track at Volusia Speedway Park in DeLeon Springs, Florida, March 11.

“Advocacy is a top priority for PRI, and it’s important for the industry. That’s why we’re emphasizing this throughout the Road Tour this year,” said Dr. Jamie Meyer, PRI President. “After seeing the great success of the Road Tour and what it can do, we will now make that same sort of impact to help with our year-round advocacy efforts.”

Now in its third year, the PRI Road Tour has captivated more than 64 million viewers with unique and never-before-seen footage of motorsports businesses and racing competition. This year’s program is expected to build on those results with a greater focus and emphasis on legislative advocacy—including the RPM Act, the importance of PRI Membership, industry education and more.

“The PRI Road Tour allows us to showcase the importance of the racing industry and inform the motorsports community about how they can support the industry they love,” said Meyer. “This year’s exclusive coverage will showcase how their participation will create a unified voice for the industry.”

ExxonMobil, VMP Performance, Titan Motorsports and SAM Tech will be among the team’s early stops as the PRI Road Tour begins its yearlong trek across the country. Sponsors of the 2022 PRI Road Tour, as of today, include Mobil 1, BBS of America, DeatschWerks, Red Line Oil, FiTech EFI, Hawk Performance, Raybestos Powertrain, Callies Performance, Five Star Race Car Bodies, Briggs and Stratton, Jesel and Mass Traction.

PRI’s comprehensive advocacy efforts include a Membership Program (performanceracing.com/membership) designed to formally unite and protect racing, and the world’s premier auto racing trade show, the PRI Trade Show (PRI2022.com). Coverage of these programs and racing industry news are showcased on PRI’s website, social platforms, weekly eNewsletter and monthly publication, PRI Magazine.

“We call on the entire racing community—business owners, track operators, racers and fans—to join us in representing and fighting for the racing industry,” said Meyer. “Our industry currently faces many challenges, and it’s imperative that we unite to protect it.”
