SEMA News—March 2021

INDUSTRY NEWS

Industry Indicators
While spikes in COVID-19 infections in late 2020
increased the odds of another economic downturn, the
U.S. automotive sector remained relatively robust,
according to the latest issue of “SEMA Industry
Indicators.”

SEMA Industry Indicators: Despite Economic Headwinds, U.S. Automotive Sector Remains Relatively Strong

The U.S. economy continues to recover but, as noted last month, growth is moderating, according to the latest “SEMA Industry Indicators” report. In Europe, where fiscal stimulus was smaller than in the United States, rising COVID-19 cases drove a fresh series of national lockdowns in late 2020. The economy there was likely to see another contraction in the fourth quarter, indicating the start of a double-dip recession. The probability of a double-dip recession in the United States has inched higher and was probably around 25% as of press time.

Even with those headwinds, the automotive industry continues to do relatively well. Production slowed somewhat in September but remained above September 2019 levels. Likewise, sales of new vehicles during the month of October were down slightly from the prior month, but spending on vehicles continued to be strong. In fact, consumer spending on vehicles and parts hit an all-time high in October.

Much of this strength in spending on vehicles reflects increased levels of consumer spending on used cars. Incoming data does suggest that the used-car market is showing some signs of weakness, while the new-car market is gaining some momentum. Spending on motor-vehicle parts and accessories has also been strong, growing 8.4% over last year.

John Gaines
Inducted last year into the SEMA Hall of
Fame, John Gaines and his company,
G&M Performance Parts, streamlined the
parts distribution process from
manufacturer to retailer.

SEMA Hall of Fame Member John Gaines Passes Away

John Gaines, a member of the SEMA Hall of Fame Class of 2020, passed away at his home surrounded by family on January 3, 2021.

Gaines was an early pioneer in automotive aftermarket warehouse distribution. His company, G&M Performance Parts, was one of the first of its kind in the automotive aftermarket.

Gaines’ distributorship was one of the first in the country to utilize a fleet of vehicles to distribute products directly to local speed shops, truck accessory stores, car dealerships and machine shops, creating a much quicker and more streamlined process from manufacturer to end user. Gaines is credited with forward thinking early on that helped many manufacturers grow to where they are today.

Prior to his career in distribution, Gaines enjoyed success as a racer, piloting Top Fuel dragsters. He opened a speed shop, Automotive Specialties, in Cottage City, Maryland, which led him eventually into the distribution side of the industry.

Funeral arrangements had not been announced as of press time.

Scholarship
SEMA scholarships are available to students pursuing degrees or
certifications that lead to careers in the automotive industry.

SEMA Accepting Scholarship and Loan Forgiveness Applications

SEMA is accepting applications for the 2021 SEMA Memorial Scholarship and Loan Forgiveness programs. Scholarships are available to students pursuing degrees or certifications that lead to careers in the automotive industry, and loan forgiveness is available to employees of SEMA-member companies.

“It’s no secret that this past year has had its challenges,” said SEMA Senior Manager of Professional Development Gary Vigil. “Now more than ever, SEMA is available to help support future industry innovators by providing financial assistance to current students and recent graduates who have outstanding student debt.

“There are thousands of talented, hard-working individuals seeking careers in the automotive aftermarket. SEMA scholarships are designed to support this next generation and allow them to focus on their studies and work rather than be burdened with tuition costs. The Loan Forgiveness program is intended to provide financial assistance to employees of SEMA-member companies with outstanding student loans.”

Awards of up to $5,000 are available to qualified individuals. The online application is available until March 1 at www.sema.org/scholarships.

Leo Kagan
As president of SEMA in the ’70s, Leo Kagan
was instrumental in moving the annual SEMA
Show from Anaheim, California, to Las Vegas.

Industry Icon Leo Kagan Passes Away

Leo Kagan, former SEMA president and longtime industry leader, passed away at his home on December 5, 2020. He was 104.

Kagan’s lengthy background in the automotive industry included the positions of vice president of sales at Hurst Products, vice president of marketing at Automatic Radio, and vice president at American Racing Equipment. He organized the manufacturers’ representative firm Kagan, Maloney, Russo and Associates.

Kagan’s dedicated service to SEMA and the industry led to his 1982 induction into the SEMA Hall of Fame. It was Kagan who, as president of SEMA from 1975–1979, spearheaded the unprecedented growth of the annual SEMA Show, including pushing to have it moved from Anaheim, California, to Las Vegas. Kagan held a seat on the SEMA Board of Directors and proposed the creation of the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund. He was named SEMA Person of the Year in 1994.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Kagan’s memory can be made to either the SEMA Scholarship Fund or to the University of Northern Iowa Foundation, 121 Commons/UNI, Cedar Falls, IA 50614.

SEMA members are invited to join a webinar on Friday, February 26, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. (PST) to learn more about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Tampering Policy. Released in December, the Policy replaces Mobile Source Enforcement Memo 1A (1974) and addresses civil enforcement of the Clean Air Act’s prohibitions on tampering and aftermarket defeat devices.

The updated Policy reinforces that in exercising its discretion the EPA will forego enforcement action when a company has a documented “reasonable basis” that a product will not adversely affect vehicle emissions when installed. SEMA generally welcomed the revised Policy as it will now allow SEMA members to undertake emissions testing and maintain the test data to document a reasonable basis for demonstrating compliance. EPA has committed to consider the test data if and when the agency investigates and will typically forego enforcement if the data shows no adverse effect on emissions. California sales are separately governed by California Air Resources Board (CARB) through its Executive Order (EO) program.

A panel of industry experts and an EPA representative will provide an overview of the new Policy. Issues covered include:

  • What type of testing is needed to achieve a reasonable basis?
  • Vehicle selection.
  • Where can the testing be performed?
  • Is this the same testing that is done when submitting an EO application to CARB?
  • What are some of the Policy’s benefits if marketing products outside of California?

Virtual EducationOne of the top-attended seminars during SEMA360, “4 Tips to Double Your Company’s Annual Sales,” featured Richard Barsamian, vice president of sales and marketing at Advanced Clutch Technology. He shared strategies that left participants with a systematic roadmap that leads to long-term growth.

“When most people try to double sales, they work as hard as they possibly can and it leads to burnout and extremely disappointing results,” said Barsamian.

Instead, Barsamian focuses on a systematic approach that looks at increasing a customer base, the number of purchases by customer and average order value, and making data-driven decisions.

Barsamian is returning to participate in a live chat during the re-airing of his webinar on March 18, at 11:00 a.m. (PST). Industry members are invited to join the re-airing where they can engage and ask Barsamian questions on how to grow their annual sales. Participants will walk away from this session with strategies that will change the way they think about their businesses.

Data Excellence Award
.

The SEMA Data Co-op (SDC) is the the largest aftermarket industry data resource, representing more than 500 brands with a collective inventory of more than 4.5 million parts, and is a valuable asset for product data creation and management. Even if your current product data is accurate, however, it can become outdated if not frequently reviewed and revised—and, in many instances, replaced altogether with data created in newer, richer file formats.

Last year, the SDC released a new member scorecard with recommended data improvements for SDC members to maintain their respective product-data rankings (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum). SEMA is recognizing those members with the SDC Data Excellence Awards, which honor companies that have worked with SDC over the year to recreate and relaunch industry-leading product data sets.

This year’s honorees include BBK Performance, Fluidampr, CargoGlide, CURT Group, Pedal Commander and Oracle Lighting.

According to Gigi Ho, SDC vice president of operations, the biggest chunk of the score comes from product descriptions.

“We need descriptions that matter to resellers and their customers,” said Ho, “so questions companies need to ask include: Are your descriptions detailing your products effectively? Are you listing all the key points of that product information within your descriptions?”

CargoGlide
The CargoGlide team takes a photo with award in front of the
company's headquarters.

The second criterion is features and benefits, and the third is product attributes. Digital assets are a large factor in the data scoring.

Oracle
The group from Oracle lighting poses with the award.

“Nowadays, you need more than one image of a product and multiple angles of that product, especially if there are connection points, which will  require their own images or videos,” said Ho. ”These could be either lifestyle-type videos or instructional or demo-type videos.”

Cherie JohnsonThe SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN) named Cherie Johnson as this week’s #SheIsSEMA Spotlight Member. Johnson is the HR manager at AirPro Diagnostics, an automotive aftermarket business that specializes in automotive scanning, diagnostics, calibration and programming services.

Johnson has more than 25 years of experience in HR as well as owning her own companies in her previous careers. Nominated for #SheIsSEMA by her colleague, Ann Swayka, Swayka attributed Johnson’s positive attitude and input to what helps make their company a happy work family and positive work environment. Below is what Swayka had to say about Johnson.

SEMA: How has Cherie shown leadership in the industry or business?

Ann Swayka: Cherie is always the person to bounce ideas off of. When we were trying to do something positive but also fun, we collectively came up with the idea of the ”AirPro Porcelain Press.” It is literally a bathroom stall weekly newsletter that every employee has taken to look forward to.

SEMA: Tell us a success story that you can share about Cherie.

AS: Cherie went through the early loss of her husband and had to raise a family on her own. She truly is a positive force to all who come in contact with her, and she is always someone who you can trust and confide in. When AirPro Diagnostics began, we were a startup company. They hired Cherie and she added a dynamic of HR professionalism and experience to handle HR issues.

SEMA: What quality do you admire most about Cherie and why?

AS: Cherie is a very positive, happy person who exudes confidence and grace.

SEMA: Why do you think Cherie is a role model in this industry?

AS: Cherie has been through so much personally and has never let any of this quell her spirit or her enthusiasm for life.

Do you know, or are you, a woman with a career in the automotive industry? Fill out a #SheIsSEMA spotlight form to submit a self-nomination or nominate a colleague and highlight how you or she is contributing to the specialty-equipment industry. Selected candidates are automatically eligible to be considered for SBN’s #SheIsSEMA Woman of the Year award, featured on SBN’s social media, SEMA eNews and recognized on the www.sema.org/she-is-sema website.
