CHRIS KERSTING

Global Markets: The Door Is Open

Chris Kersting-SEMA President and CEO, automotive business, aftermarket news, automotive international

The 2011 SEMA Show is a memory at this point, but some of you who attended the banquet Thursday night might recall our leadership presentation. In it, we highlighted some of the interesting ways that companies are entering new markets and finding new ways to do business.

One area we touched on is the opportunity for sales in overseas markets. Recognizing that the U.S. economy will be slow in the coming years, we think it’s especially important that companies take notice of offshore markets that are healthy and where enthusiasts are eager to buy.

In this issue of SEMA News, you’ll find an article that highlights the Global Media Awards program. For the last eight years, these awards have helped connect SEMA members and their products in key international markets. This is a hugely successful program, involving more than 150 companies and 12 different overseas markets, but it’s only one of many. SEMA members should know that SEMA provides other services and programs that will make it easier to market products overseas. Here are a few examples:

  • International Measuring Sessions: U.S. specialty products have wide appeal around the world. However, there are a number of vehicles that are very popular abroad but not sold in the United States. Now, through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), SEMA will be helping members gain measuring-session access to international models that are not available in the North American market. Some of the high-volume vehicles SEMA members might access could include the Jeep Wrangler Diesel, the Toyota Hilux, an international version of the Chevy Colorado and the Thailand-built Ford Ranger Double Cab. (SEMA recently posted a survey to allow members to vote on which vehicles they most want to see included as a part of this program.
  • One-on-One Matchmaking Programs: SEMA searches out markets where enthusiast passion, market conditions and the vehicle mix indicate good potential for our members’ products. In recent years, some of the fastest-growing markets have been China and the Middle East. To tap into the potential, SEMA has developed single-day matchmaker events that include a series of one-hour, one-on-one meetings with overseas buyers. These quality sales opportunities have been highly rated by the participants. Buyers invited to the one-on-one programs are pre-vetted, and manufacturers get hotels, meals, in-country travel to meetings and site visits included. The next one-on-one event will take place April 17–20 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), allowing SEMA members to meet with qualified buyers from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE and Qatar. Manufacturers interested in this year’s China event, scheduled for September 2012, will soon be able to register online here.
  • Grant Funds: In a very positive development that will help members defray the cost of participating in SEMA export initiatives, the U.S. DOC has named SEMA the recipient of a $500,000 Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) grant. These new funds will be made available to SEMA members participating in SEMA’s one-on-one programs and for other export-generating initiatives. For more information, contact Linda Spencer.

Meanwhile, the SEMA Show remains the premier venue for making international connections. In 2011, international buyer attendance was at an all-time high—up 20% over the previous year. Buyers came from 133 countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Venezuela, Australia, Columbia, China, Canada and Japan, just to name a few. SEMA is working actively to cultivate these buyers. We make the Center for International Commerce available throughout the week, providing private meeting space and interpreters. And we supply the International Buyers’ Guide, a printed resource that lists SEMA Show exhibitors who are interested in overseas markets.

Numerous studies have shown that exporters outperform non-exporters in terms of wages, productivity and innovation, so we hope more SEMA members will look for new ways to make exporting work for their business. In the coming months, we will continue to explore more turnkey export opportunities for our members and make the pathway as smooth as possible.

SEMA Black Book

SEMA Black BookOver the years, SEMA has received many requests from members seeking information about Federal and State emissions compliance requirements. In many cases, there has been confusion about the process by which requirements can be met and Executive Orders (E.O.s) from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are issued for applicable parts and systems. In the past, SEMA has provided information and outlined compliance steps. However, we’ve learned there are waysto further simplify the process.

Video Made Simple

How to Shoot for the Web and Not From the Hip

aftermarket business, automotive videos, video tips

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much more is a streaming video worth at 30 frames per second?

When it comes to branding, search-engine optimization and, ultimately, sales in this digital age, online videos can make a crucial difference in a small company’s marketing. In the realm of sales alone, studies now show web video to be a top influencer in consumer research and
purchasing decisions.

“Online video is huge for all sorts of reasons, but one of the biggest is that about 70% of traffic online is actually video,” said Rick Husong, owner and chief creative director of Lucid Media, a Los Angeles-based agency specializing in digital and interactive advertising. “As such, all your major search engines—Google, Yahoo—are giving some preferential treatment to video content.”

Tyler Tanaka, vice president of business development for PostRelease and Cie Digital Labs, which also assists businesses with content marketing, said that failure to produce online videos can be just as detrimental as a webpage devoid of product details.

“Video nowadays is just like a webpage,” Tanaka said. “If you have a new product but don’t post that information on your website, you’re preventing sales.”

Unfortunately, professional video production can seem costly for small businesses with limited marketing resources. The good news is that “going amateur” is not only budget-friendly but easier and, when done right, more effective than you might think.

Just Shoot It

You don’t have to be a Cecil B. DeMille to grab attention on the web. Take CNET’s popular reviews, for example, where one of the website’s several editors simply faces a video camera to briefly explain and offer the pros and cons of electronic products to consumers. There’s nothing flashy about these videos, yet they were instrumental in drawing an estimated average of 15.3 million visitors per month to CNET.com between April and September 2011.

According to Tanaka, that shouldn’t be a surprise.

“Generally, most user-absorbed content nowadays is not professional quality,” he said. “A lot of [industry] people don’t create videos just because there’s a fear factor involved with it. What’s most important is that you actually go through the steps of creating the content, regardless of the quality.”

In fact, amateur video production may actually work in a small business’s favor. The current philosophy of YouTube and other video sites is to encourage a wide range of content levels because that drives traffic—which is good for advertisers, search engines, social media sites, other web shareholders and, ultimately, end users.

“It’s interesting that when you’re scouring what goes viral on YouTube and what doesn’t, very rarely does professional content go viral and get many views,” observed Tanaka.

In other words, your low-budget video has just as much chance of resonating with web users as slickly produced content. The Holy Grail, of course, is creating something that online viewers find interesting and entertaining enough to share via Facebook, Twitter and other social media. To do that, you’ll want to bring at least some level of professional thinking to your project.

“At the end of the day it’s good to get the information out there, but it’s also going to be a representation of your brand,” Husong said. “Anything worth doing is worth doing well. If you’re going to do it, you should put some real time, thought and energy into it.”

aftermarket business, automotive videos, video tips

Fortunately, most amateurs can quickly attain the knowledge and skills. It all starts with the basic questions that apply to most marketing endeavors. First, said Husong, ask yourself, “What’s the final application for all this? What are our real goals?” Then, after determining those answers, “work backward” to accomplish your goals through another series of basic project-management questions:
  • What’s the budget?
  • Who is the intended audience?
  • Who is going to write the script?
  • Who is going to be in the video?
  • Where will it be shot? What should the background look like?
  • How many cameras should be used?
  • What other equipment or props will be needed?
  • What kind of sound or music, if any, will accompany the visuals?
  • Who will edit the video, and what software will they use?

The point is to have a plan and a “shooting script”—don’t try to wing it or shoot from the hip. Husong put it well: “Ultimately, my opinion is that if you’re not willing to give it that amount of time and energy, then it’s not worth doing. It can be done by yourself, and it can be done well by yourself, but it would be smart to educate yourself and spend the time necessary.”

Tanaka advised also trying to think outside the box, especially in terms of audience: “Sometimes your video content doesn’t need to go viral or be made for the masses. It needs to be made for that clutch guy working on a dragster, and that clutch guy is going to find that important information or the answers he’s been looking for.”

Regardless of subject matter, take a realistic look at your budget. If you have multiple products but can’t afford to create videos for them all, don’t get discouraged. Simply confine your first efforts to one or two of your hottest products. If those videos prove to be good returns on investment, then choose another subject and slowly build your online video portfolio.

Remember, too, that equipment needn’t be extravagant. “For a couple thousand dollars, you can get a really nice, cinema-quality camera,” noted Husong. Plus there are plenty of inexpensive, easy-to-use editing tools for the computer. Renting equipment is yet another option.

Kristen Damberger, graphic designer for Cometic Gaskets, advocates just diving in with whatever equipment you have available. After all, that’s what she did for SEMA-member company Cometic Gasket, a small, worldwide supplier of custom and short-run gaskets for the
powersports segment.

“It seems like everyone’s doing videos nowadays,” she said. “I started looking at some of the ones online and thought, ‘I can do that...’ So I just grabbed my Flip camera and tried it one afternoon.”

Her first effort produced an approximately five-minute web video featuring a company product engineer teaching motorcycle consumers how to do a pre-ride check. She then produced another impromptu iPhone video focusing on the testing of a new engine-services part straight from the company’s shop.

Since making her first two online videos, Damberger has struck up friendships with professional videographers in her area. They have invited her to observe some of their shoots to help hone her skills.

“I’m going to take their ideas and how they do things and scale it down to us,” she said. “My plan is to get four or five videos under my belt and post them one at a time a couple weeks apart to keep the interest going.”

Once she has done so, the company will begin to actively promote the new online series to customers and consumers.

Calling in the Pros

If you’re still wary of self-made videos after weighing all the costs and benefits, that’s not a problem, said Husong. “A lot of people are so busy, sometimes it just makes sense to bring in another company and have them do it for you,” he said. “There are a lot of video companies out there these days, and that’s both a good thing and a bad thing.”

Good because help is widely available at competitive pricing; bad because there are also a good share of fly-by-night operations. The trick is finding the right video producer without falling prey to an inexperienced or outright disreputable company. “I can’t tell you how many projects I get cleaning up after other peoples’ messes,” Husong cautioned.

Here, the usual business rules apply. You’ll want to get recommendations and referrals from others. Gather estimates, and question those that seem to be lowballs. (As the adage goes, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.) Ask for and judiciously check references. Above all, don’t let anyone talk circles around you.

“A lot of first-timers coming into video production seem to be intimidated by the whole process, but it’s not rocket science,” said Husong. “Look for a company that helps educate you through the process and makes you feel like you’re part of the process. At the end of the day, it’s all about the people. If you can’t get along and communicate with the people, it’s flawed from the start.”

Five Web Shooting Tips

aftermarket business, automotive videos, video tips

Lights, camera, action! Although you’re not out to shoot the next Hollywood epic, you can add a professional touch to your digital productions by following a few basics.

Small Is the Goal: Remember that your finished video is destined for the small screen—a computer monitor or mobile device. Get in close to your subject and avoid wide shots that take in too much background. Also, images will show increased “pixilation” as video is compressed for online viewing, meaning that stripes and other detailed patterns will blur and look funny. Best to avoid them.

Stable Is Good: The tripod is your friend. Use it to eliminate “the shakes” and other distracting camera movements. Moreover, too many fast zooms and sweeping pan shots will make you look too amateurish. Keeping the camera still and focused on one place is a good strategy for novices. And never, ever use the optical or digital zoom feature. If your lens can’t get a tight enough shot, position the camera closer to your subject.

Noise Is Bad: Too many novices treat sound as an afterthought. Our brains tend to filter subtle noise intrusions. Microphones aren’t so discriminating. Don’t rely on editing software to fix your video’s sound in post-production. When choosing the setting for your video, listen carefully for stray ambient or background noises and eliminate them or find a quieter setting. For speaking subjects, an external microphone (as opposed to a camera-mounted mic) will add professional quality to your video.

Light Is Tricky: Harsh, contrast lighting can ruin an otherwise good video. Indoors, you will want to wash the room with a soft, evenly dispersed light. Outdoors, mornings and late afternoons typically offer the best lighting. In fact, depending on your subject, an overcast day can actually be ideal. The point is to reduce overly bright highlights as well as harsh shadows falling on your subject—especially if it’s a person. Also, make sure that your camera’s white balance is set correctly for your lighting conditions.

Learning Is Easy: Whether through an adult learning center or a community college extension course, there is sure to be an affordable, basic video-making class in your area. This relatively small investment of time and money will go a long way in elevating the quality of your company’s amateur productions.

Applications for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund are available online.
Students preparing for careers in the automotive industry may be eligible to receive financial awards ranging from $1,000–$4,000 through the 2012 SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund (SMSF). Scholarship applications require college transcripts and letters of recommendation and are now available.

Since the fund’s inception in 1984, more than $1.5 million in scholarships have been awarded to more than 600 students engaged in studies leading to careers in the automotive specialty-equipment market or related fields.

Unlike financial aid and student loans, the SEMA Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award that does not have to be paid back. Awards are granted to eligible applicants based on academic achievements, work experience, community involvement, essay content and recommendations.

A loan-forgiveness award is also available to recent graduates who are working for SEMA-member companies and paying off existing student loans. Details and applications for scholarships and loan-forgiveness awards are available at www.SEMA.org/scholarships.

Winners will be notified in the summer of 2012. Scholarship payments are sent directly to the student’s college, university, trade or vocational school to help offset the cost of tuition. Loan-forgiveness payments are sent directly to the financial institutions.

Louis L. Borick, founder and longtime president and chairman of the board of Superior Industries International, passed away Monday, November 28, 2011. He was 87.

Borick died of natural causes two days before his 88th birthday at his home in Beverly Hills, California, said his son Steven.

Louis Borick built Superior Industries from a small automotive accessories distributor in 1957 to a major aluminum road-wheel supplier servicing automotive manufacturers worldwide. He had been on the company’s board of directors since 1958, serving as chairman until 2007. He was chief executive officer for Superior until January 2005.

“Louis was a good man whose efforts and entrepreneurial spirit were great assets to the wheel industry as a whole,” said former SEMA President Chuck Blum. “His foresight and contributions helped make the aluminum wheel industry as much of a commodity as it is today.”

Borick was also a major supporter of the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund and is one of the scholarship’s sub-fund sponsors. He donated $50,000 to the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2004 on behalf of Superior Industries, and the L.L. Borick sub-fund is awarded each year to students seeking careers in the specialty-equipment industry.

He was inducted into the SEMA Hall of Fame in 1995.

Two areas of the Show that capture the attention of many in the industry are wheels and tires. The Global Tire Expo—Powered by the Tire Industry Association (TIA), was created as a standalone section in 2010 and has grown to become a comprehensive tire show featuring all segments of the tire industry. Held side-by-side with the wheel section, the Global Tire Expo helps to generate a great deal of media coverage as well.

John Menzler: 2011 SEMA Person of the Year

Long-Time SEMA Member and Industry Veteran Is Recognized for His Role as a Mentor

Applause filled the room as John Menzler of the COMP Performance Group took the podium to receive the 2011 Person of the Year Award at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

SEMA presented John Menzler of the COMP Performance Group with the 2011 Person of the Year Award at the SEMA Show Industry Awards Banquet in Las Vegas on the evening of Thursday, November 3. As a longtime SEMA member as well as a Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) and Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) Select Committee member and mentor to many in the industry, Menzler received ringing applause as banquet emcee Dave McClelland announced to a packed house, “Congratulations, John!”

Created in 1969, the Person of the Year Award recognizes individuals for their distinguished service to the trade association and the specialty-equipment industry. One of SEMA’s most prestigious honors, the Person of the Year Award is presented in front of thousands of industry leaders and professionals during the annual banquet at the SEMA Show.

“Being named SEMA Person of the Year is the highlight of my automotive career; it still hasn’t sunk in yet,” Menzler said. “Nobody sets out to become Person of the Year, and you don’t do it for the accolades; you do it to help the industry. It’s all about giving back. I’ve been involved in the councils for 20 years; it’s the backbone of what SEMA is about. I always say that SEMA is the greatest organization in the world, and they also put on a Show.”

McClelland took time to highlight Menzler’s contributions to the industry, making it clear that his compassion and advice helped solve problems both in his work at COMP Performance Group and in his numerous volunteer projects.

“[Menzler] is quick to offer advice and guidance to anyone who needs it,” said McClelland. “Helping others bring their ideas alive is a common thread running through his active involvement in SEMA councils and committees and in his mentoring and volunteer work, such as during this year’s Childhelp and Victory Junction Pinewood drag race.”

Menzler was clearly emotional as he made his way to the podium, while the cheers and applause continued to echo throughout the ballroom. Having been involved in the automotive aftermarket for several decades, Menzler’s service and volunteer efforts have also been officially recognized previously. He was announced as the winner of the Mentor of the Year award in 2010 at the SEMA SBN Networking Breakfast, where he received the only standing ovation of the morning.

Menzler is actively involved in SEMA’s HRIA and ARMO councils. He also served on the Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council (MPMC) Select Committee from the council’s inception in 1995 until June 2010. He chaired the council from 2004–2006 and, when his tenure as immediate past chair/advisor was over in 2006, he immediately ran and was re-elected to the Select Committee. He is the only recipient of the MPMC Industry Recognition Award, presented to him in 2000, and he was inducted into the MPMC Hall of Fame in 2010. Menzler also owns a SEMA-member company called Inventive Marketing/MotoFeet.

We hope the entire industry will join SEMA in congratulating 2011 SEMA Person of the Year John Menzler.
