The firm services more than 120 retailers with its off-road specialty-equipment products, many of which it imports directly from overseas. Consumers may also come into Yunliang’s shop to purchase and have installed a wide array of light-truck performance and accessory products. Yunliang has more than 40 employees, with a total operating facility of over 3,000 square meters.

Quick Tips and Tricks to Add Style and Panache

The news is good for company execs who are looking to add some style and panache to their business blogs: It’s never been easier to add rich media applications such as audio and video to your blog and start reeling in more readers. Plus, even more robust options for your blog are continually rolling out, courtesy of the wunderkinds from the geek-o-sphere.

  SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-INTERNET

With Artisiteer, you customize the design of your blog in minutes—no kidding.

Want to build a FaceBook-style social network around your blog with a simple plug-in? No problem. Looking to custom design your blog, just the way you want it, in minutes, with absolutely no programming experience? Piece of cake.

To get you from here to there, the following roundup of the latest tools will make the ride quick, easy and ridiculously inexpensive:

Effortlessly Customize Your Blog’s Design: Lots of web design tools claim to be so simple that a six-year-old can use them. Artisteer 2.1; $129, delivers on that promise. After fruitlessly searching for months for a Wordpress blog template that was right for me, I finally came across this gem of a blog design program that enabled me to make my own template in minutes. Essentially, Artisteer enables you to start with a basic design of a Wordpress blog and then tweak it to your heart’s content with an easy-to-use dashboard. There are options to change your Wordpress blog’s shape, color, font, text size, columns, margin widths and more. And all are a point and click away.

Once you’re absolutely satisfied with your custom blog design, one click of a button exports it as a Wordpress theme that can be uploaded to your Wordpress blog server—and you’re done. Every aspect of the program is painstakingly designed for the non-techie, non-programmer. Plus, Artisteer allows the final design to be exported as a standard website or in compatible formats for web content management systems Drupal and Joomla. Very cool.

Add A Social Network: Believe it or not, newer plug-ins from popular blog platforms Moveable Type and Wordpress now enable you to create Facebook- and MySpace-type social networks right on your blog. This is a great way to elevate the community you’ve already built around your blog to a much more enriched experience. Motion for Moveable Type (keywords: Motion for Moveable Type) is probably the most business-oriented of the two social network creation tools. With Motion, you can build a Twitter-like feed into your blog, continually import new data from other social networks and/or create a micro-blog for every marketing campaign your company launches. Motion will also monitor what people are saying about your company on dozens of social networks from a single page, so you’ll always be able to respond quickly and informatively. Plus you can monitor those same social networks and display what people are saying about your brand as a kind of instant review site. Motion for Moveable Type is available free with Moveable Type Pro ($395) and Moveable Type Enterprise (call for price). It also can work alongside Wordpress or on any website.

The other major social network creation tool for blogs is Wordpress’s BuddyPress , which is offered free to all users. The only caveat is that BuddyPress is currently compatible with only Wordpress Multi-User, which is a beefed-up version of the standard Wordpress that enables users to create thousands of blogs with a single installation of the platform.

Key social networking features offered by BuddyPress include private messaging, profiles, friends, groups, activity streams and The Wire—a communications app similar to The Wall found on FaceBook. Granted, installing and running Wordpress MU and BuddyPress demand a bit more technical prowess than running a simple Wordpress blog, but if you or your company run into trouble, you can always opt for paid support, which starts at $2,500 annually.

Add an Audio Podcast: With Propaganda; $49 from Mixmeister Technology, you’ll be able to record, post and promote the audio podcast for your blog with a single program. The easy-to-use software can import audio from almost any source. And it can also help you create RSS feeds, ID3 tags and iTunes tags, which ensure that your podcast is easily accessible. After you’ve completed your recording, simply use the software’s publish feature to format in WMA, MP3 or WAV format, and then upload the podcast to your blog or to any podcast hosting service.

   SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-INTERNET

With Propaganda, you’ll be able to record, post and promote the audio podcast for your blog with a single program.

Meanwhile, Wordpress bloggers will also want to check out PodPress, a free plug-in that automatically generates feeds for your podcast to RSS users, iTunes users and the like. It also simplifies the posting of a podcast to Wordpress, gives you control over how your podcast player displays within a post, and supports a wide variety of audio formats.

Moveable Type has a similar free podcasting plug-in for its users. And TypePad offers an extremely easy tutorial for adding podcasts to its blogs (keywords: TypePad add a podcast).

Add a Videocast: If there’s video up on YouTube you’d like to feature in your blog, the company offers a free YouTube player that you can embed in your blog text. For more info, check out YouTube’s how-to video on how to do the quick embed (keywords: YouTube player) as well as a separate how-to video on how to customize your player (keywords: customize YouTube player). With either option, you’ll see a faint YouTube watermark in the right-hand corner of the video.

The beauty of YouTube’s player is that the actual video footage is stored and streamed off YouTube’s servers, so your company will not pay the web bandwidth transmission costs, no matter how many people view the video. Google also offers a tool called Insight to help you analyze who’s viewing your embedded video.

Meanwhile, Wordpress offers a specially designed Wordpress Video Plug-In (keywords: Wordpress Video Plug-In) for its users, which easily enables you to embed video from dozens of video hosting sites, including YouTube.

Plus, if you’re looking to create and upload your own videos with minimal effort, check out VlogItt; $29 from Adobe. The program was specifically created to work with all popular blog programs and enables you to shoot a basic video and add customizable graphics, effects, titles, music and templates. There’s also a built-in teleprompter that facilitates video narration. Uploading your finished creation is as easy as clicking “publish” and dropping the resulting video thumbnail pix of your “vlog” into your blog edit screen. The program automatically handles all the technical details such as video compression, file transfer and the like. Plus, your blog’s readers can view the video by simply clicking on the video thumbnail that appears in your blog entry.

Add A Google Live News Feed: Google now offers a free, extremely customizable news window for your blog, known as Google NewsShow. Such news windows are a great way to ensure that your blog stays fresh, topical and continually updated. One of the best features of Google NewsShow is its specificity: Google will only display news in its NewsShow window that is directly related to the search phrase you create. Want news about Famous Vampires With Severe Hemophobia (fear of blood)? No problem. That’s what you’ll get, and that’s all you’ll get. Plus, NewsShow is a snap to create. Simply type in a few variables in the creation wizard, cut and paste the code into your blog, and voila!, you’ve got a news window, updated as news happens. I created my own NewsShow window for a blog in under two minutes.

By the way, while you’re playing in Google-land, you might as well also create a GoogleProfile (keywords: Google Profile) for your blog. Essentially, this is a quick web page that you create with a couple of variable inputs for Google, which appears high up in Google search returns. Here’s an example of the Google Profile for Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Creating the program will help in the promotion of your blog and help you better control your blog’s image in Google’s search engine returns.

SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-SEMA HERITAGE

October 1964 was a busy month on the Bonneville Salt Flats. During the span of just a few weeks, the land speed record changed hands no fewer than five times. Tom Green, driving Walt Arfons’ jet-powered Wingfoot Express, set the wheels in motion with a 413.199mph record on October 5. Two days later, Walt’s younger brother Art upped the record to 434.022 mph in the Green Monster, a car he built in his Akron, Ohio, shop using a military surplus, 17,500hp GE jet engine. Here, Art’s jubilant crew helps him out of the Monster’s cockpit after a one-way run of 479.62 mph, then the fastest speed ever clocked through a measured mile on the ground. That’s chief mechanic Ed Snyder wiping the tears of joy with his
handkerchief. (We found this photo and others in a press kit generated by Firestone, which supplied Arfons’ high-speed tires.)

A week later, Craig Breedlove—the first to go 400 mph in his Spirit of America in 1963—bested Arfons’ record; and two days after that, he broke the 500-mph barrier with a 526.277mph record. It was during this attempt that Breedlove experienced the parachute failure that sent him into a salt pond at 200 mph.

Within two weeks of Breedlove’s swim, Art Arfons was back on the salt. This time, the Green Monster moved the record to 536.710 mph and clocked a one-way pass of 559 mph. But months would pass before Arfons’ record was deemed official by the FIA and the FIM, the international sanctioning bodies governing land-speed records. It took them that long to agree that vehicles did not have to be wheel-driven to hold the absolute speed record.

To this day, land-speed-racing fans make a clear distinction between Andy Green’s jet-car record of 763.035 mph set in the Thrust SSC and the wheel-driven mark of 470.444 mph held by Don Vesco’s Turbinator.

Growth for Businesses at the Core of the Specialty-Equipment Industry

 SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER2009-RESEARCH

The racing and performance market grew 4% between 2007 and 2008.
Photo: Zachary Krelle

The racing and performance component of the specialty-equipment market is comprised of three market niches: street performance, racing and compact performance. Combined, these three niches represent 32% of the total retail sales of the specialty-equipment market.

In 2008, the overall market contracted to $31 billion from $38 billion in retail sales. But the racing and performance market experienced growth. In fact, total retail sales for the three niches combined grew 4%, from just under $10 billion to $10.3 billion.

Specialty-Equipment Market

In 2008, manufacturer sales for the street performance niche reached $0.76 billion, up from $0.73 billion in 2007. Retail sales hit $2.19 billion, matching those of 2007. For the racing niche, manufacturer and retails sales experienced slight increases compared to 2007, reaching $0.37 billion and $1.11 billion respectively. The third niche that makes up the racing and performance specialty-equipment market is compact performance. This niche also experienced an increase in 2008, with manufacturer sales reaching $2.53 billion and retail sales hitting $7.03 billion compared to $6.69 billion the previous year.

Performance Vehicles

In 2009, the long-awaited 2010 Chevrolet Camaro was released and Ford redesigned the ever-popular Mustang. Both of these vehicles have had a home in the racing and performance market since they were first released in the 1960s. Countless SEMA-member companies manufacture and sell products for these vehicles. And several of these companies have requested data from SEMA’s Tech Transfer program in order to streamline and expedite the process of designing their parts.

The Camaro has been in hibernation since the 2002 model year. In June of 2009, sales of the Camaro topped those of the Mustang for the first time since 1993.

When asked about the 2010 Camaro, member companies agreed that the ability to access all computer-aided design (CAD) files for the vehicle was a great help. In fact, the CAD files were available to SEMA members before the vehicle even hit the showroom floor. Companies were then able to manufacture products and have them ready upon the release of the vehicle.

“The design and development process for our SMS 620 Camaro will be the most streamlined of all of our SMS Signature Series American musclecars,” said Phil Frank, chief creative officer for SMS Supercars.

JBA Performance Headers and Exhaust released a complete line of new products for the 2010 Camaro, including shorty and long-tube headers and four different exhaust systems. The company was able to do this with the help of SEMA’s Tech Transfer program.

“JBA has always appreciated SEMA and what the organization has done for our segment of the performance aftermarket,” said Greg Raymond, sales manager for JBA.

  SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-RESEARCH

Member companies such as Roush Performance Products helped to make the 2010 Ford Mustang an awesome performance vehicle.

Scott Johnson of Dakota Digital had this to say about the Tech Transfer and the Camaro: “The Tech Transfer program allowed us to jump way ahead of the curve regarding product design, fitment and packaging. Not only did we have our design done before the car was available to the pubic, but we had prototypes built as well—which, I might add, fit perfectly. I feel that the Camaro is going to be one of the most heavily modified cars in the specialty-equipment market in recent history. This is the perfect car for this industry at the perfect time.”

A similar statement was made by Bonnie Russell of ProjxAuto, who said: “Americans need something in the automotive market to get excited about, and I think we have it in the new Camaro.”

Two SEMA Measuring Sessions were held for the 2010 Camaro—one in Detroit and one in California. The one in Detroit was held in February 2009, a month before the Camaro was actually released for sale.

Another performance vehicle that has had a positive impact on the specialty-equipment market is the redesigned 2010 Ford Mustang. Although not a complete redesign like the 2005 Mustang, the front and rear of the vehicle were updated to give the 2010 car an even more aggressive look. The Ford Mustang has been an iconic mainstay of the street performance market since its introduction in 1964. In 2010, the Mustang will enter NASCAR for the first time, making its debut in the Nationwide Series.

A SEMA Measuring Session for the 2010 Mustang was held in Detroit in December 2008. Another was held in California in June. CAD files for the Mustang were made available to SEMA manufacturer members through the Tech Transfer program. As was the case with the Camaro files, members were extremely pleased to have this data and have parts available before the Mustang was even released. One testament to the success of this program comes from Marcello Canitano of SilverHorse Racing.

“Our use of the SEMA Tech Transfer program aids us in ensuring that the replacement products we manufacture for the Ford Mustang fit properly and exceed market expectations for fit and finish,” Canitano said. “By having the factory data, we can engineer our products to release at the same time as the new vehicle. Also, since we have the factory CAD data, we can rapidly prototype our parts in advance for testing before committing thousands of dollars to tool production.”

Access to CAD data has also helped SEMA members expand their businesses. For example, Shane Wagner of the Drake Automotive Group cited the Tech Transfer program as being responsible for the company becoming a direct supplier to Ford for new Mustangs.

“The Mustang is our core market and has been for over 25 years,” said Wagner. “We use the data to get perfect fits and verify functionality in 3D space, saving time and money. The tools at our disposal have also helped us to become a direct supplier to Ford for the 2010 and up model years.”

Unlike the Camaro, the Mustang has been on the market every year since its inception. Steeda Autosports Inc., a SEMA member and a company best known for fully outfitting Mustangs for performance, developed an open-element filter system for the 2010 Mustang that integrates with the stock air intake system. This was done in a timely and cost-effective way as a result of CAD data provided by Tech Transfer.

“The presence of the Mustang in the market really speaks for itself,” said Aric Pogel of Steeda. “The Mustang has been the vehicle of choice for performance modifications since the ‘80s, with no gap in availability. Low initial cost plus tremendous positive response to modifications makes this car very, very popular.”

The 2010 Camaro and the 2010 Mustang are expected to be well-represented at the 2009 SEMA Show. In fact, Ford is the Vehicle Manufacturer of the Show for 2009. As always, the SEMA Show will showcase racing and performance products that excite the industry and keep the market alive. Click here for a complete listing of exhibitors that will have racing and performance products on display at the 2009 SEMA Show.

The SEMA Consumer Demand Index
The July Consumer Demand Index indicated that 8% of drivers intend to purchase racing and performance products in the next three months. This is up from 7% in June and 5% in May. And it is the highest it has been in the last 12 months. Those drivers likely to purchase racing and performance products are most likely to live in urban areas of the Midwest and are most likely to be single.

SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-RESEARCH

With assistance from TechnoMetrica, SEMA began developing the SEMA Consumer Demand Index for Performance Products and Accessories (formerly branded PADI) in January 2007. The purpose of the index is to track and help forecast U.S. consumer demand for automotive specialty and performance products, such as appearance products and accessories, racing and performance products and wheels, tires and suspension products. Racing and performance products are at the very core of the specialty-equipment market. When SEMA was founded in 1963 as the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association, the founding members created an organization to represent manufacturers of racing and performance-related products. Today, of course, there are more than 7,100 SEMA-member companies, and they represent more than just racing and performance parts. However, the industry will probably always be most closely associated with its roots in speed and performance.

How Several Educational Sessions at the SEMA Show Will Help Your Business Run More Efficiently

SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-BTC

SEMA’s Business Technology Committee is sponsoring seven seminars at the 2009 SEMA Show, beginning on Monday, November 2, 2009, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in room N255-257 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Keeping with the theme of trying to do more with less, SEMA’s Business Technology Committee (BTC) is sponsoring a track of seven seminars at the 2009 SEMA Show that will help your business do exactly that through the use of technology and quality product information. The sessions are geared toward manufacturers, distributors and anyone else involved in the aftermarket distribution chain, and each is chock full of suggestions on how to make your business work smarter.

 SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-BTC
Titled “Business Efficiency 101,” the track will kick off on Monday, November 2, 2009, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in room N255-257 of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) with John Zinn of Advanced Digital Strategies presenting “Getting Your Data House in Order, Part I: We Really Want to Sell Your Products but Your Data Won’t Let Us.” The session will include a real-life case study (or should we say horror story) on a substantial brick-and-mortar retail chain that recently decided to have an online presence. Thirteen months and tens of thousands of dollars later, this website still isn’t operating because the retailer can’t get the data it needs from its suppliers. If you are a manufacturer who wants to see your products on more websites or are a retailer considering creating or expanding your website, this case study is a must see.

Immediately following that session, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Bob Moore of Bob Moore and Partners will present “Getting Your Data House in Order, Part II: Data Standards 101.” A popular speaker at last year’s Show, Moore’s session is a must for anyone who is just getting started with data or is confused by all the “geek-speak” related to data and data standards. This presentation will focus on the basics of standardized product information in easy-to-follow “non-tech” speak and will show the differences between product attribute data (i.e., PIES) and catalog application data (i.e., ACES) and how both are critical to your success.

Motor State Distributing’s Scott O’Toole will present the third session of the track: “Getting Your Data House in Order, Part III: Product Attribute Data—The Path to Profits.” O’Toole will present on November 2, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in LVCC room N255-257. The session aims to show you how to increase sales, lower returns and improve product exposure by formatting and managing product information required by today’s distribution channel.

Finally, those selling products based on year/make/model data should watch Gigi Ho, co-founder of Digital Performance Inc., present “Getting Your Data House in Order, Part IV: ACES Data Standards—Fit Happens.” Ho’s presentation will run from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on November 2 in LVCC room N255-257. Recent industry studies show that most manufacturers have major holes in their application data, meaning that they don’t catalog every application that their parts fit. This seminar will help anyone who depends on electronic catalogs to match parts to specific vehicles or engines to understand how to use industry application standards to eliminate holes and provide their customers with more accurate application data. This seminar helps explain the differences between AAIA Legacy data standards and ACES and how to get the most out of each.

Want to learn how to measure the effectiveness of your online presence from the source? Linda Boudiab and Mark Contreras, both of Google, will tell you how to “Measure the Success of Your Online Efforts with eMetrics” on November 3 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in LVCC room N255-257. The speakers will help you determine who is finding your site, what pages they’re visiting and how you should react once you’ve determined the answers. This course is an eye-opener for anybody who is concerned about measuring the results of their labors.

By implementing internet parts ordering (IPO) technology, a reseller can leverage its suppliers’ inventories to offer a wider range of products while reducing inventory. You can confirm product availability and order and calculate special shipping through an electronic process in seconds while your customer is standing at the counter. IPO technology can help provide a commerce solution that any retailer, installer or distributor can use to sell more with less. SEMA’s session entitled “Offer More Products with Reduced Inventory—Welcome to IPO Technology” will take place on November 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in LVCC room N255-257. The session covers both basics and intermediate sections of the IPO standards and process.

During the final session, “Trading Partner Connectivity—E-Hub Solutions” on November 5 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in LVCC room N255-257, Steve Smith of GCommerce Inc. will explain how enabling trading partner connectivity can provide critical business information and operational efficiencies, thereby improving profitability for all, showing the business value and technology requirements at each level within the supply chain. If you need connectivity solutions to fit your needs, this seminar is not to be missed!

The sessions, part of SEMA Education Week at the 2009 SEMA Show, are free to all attendees of the SEMA Show, with no RSVPs required. For more information on the SEMA Business Technology Committee and the programs that it offers, e-mail btc@sema.org.

Traditional Marketing With a Twist

 SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-BUSINESS

Oakley has four 18-wheelers full of Oakley products that go to events such as the Daytona 500.

For John Hotchkis, the “aha” moment came when he did an Internet search for a BMW exhaust. He found two videos on YouTube of BMWs with exhausts from the brand he was considering. They were posted by satisfied customers, not the manufacturer.

“Indirectly, they were making the manufacturer look good,” said Hotchkis. “With our product, this could really show how much a suspension helps the handling.”

The Hotchkis Sport Suspension website now includes videos of cars with a Hotchkis suspension zooming around traffic cones. The website is helping attract a whole new group of customers — Generation Y.

Gen Y grew up with the Internet. They turn to it for information, entertainment and socializing. Marketing to Gen Y requires a wholesale embrace of digital marketing. So from flashy websites to tiny text messages, companies are reinventing their marketing approach.

“The old way was to save your pile of magazines,” said Hotchkis. “Now, this audience wants info, and a lot of it, and immediately.”

It’s a brave new world for some aftermarket companies, but don’t be afraid. Gen Y enthusiasts have the same aspirations as earlier generations. Gen Y car enthusiasts want to make their vehicles look cooler, go faster or operate better, said Dan Kahn, 32, president of Kahn Media.

“The nuance is to communicate it differently,” Kahn said. “It’s all about digital.”

 SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-BUSINESS

“We are finding a whole different slice of the enthusiasts group coming to see us at car shows,” said John Hotchkis of Hotchkis Sport Suspension.

Though estimates vary, Gen Y generally covers people born from the late ‘70s to around 2000 and includes from 75 to 80 million people. AutoPacific, an automotive research company in Tustin, California, said that Gen Y median household income is $60,000 and that Gen Yers will account for 19% of the car-buying population by 2013, up from 10% in 2008.

The defining characteristic of Gen Yers is that technology has been a constant part of their lives, said Dan Hall, AutoPacific marketing director. “As a result, they are accustomed to social networks that are widespread and provide immediate feedback.” Hotchkis, 50, said that he got serious about reaching Gen Y about two years ago. Now, 50% of his marketing budget goes to digital marketing, and that is growing. The videos on his website show the suspension under the car as it operates, with a soundtrack.

“We are giving them as much sensory information as possible,” said Hotchkis.

The site also has links to the company’s Twitter, Facebook and MySpace pages. As a result, sales to Gen Y buyers are on the rise at the privately owned company, and Hotchkis said that he is finding a whole different slice of the enthusiast group coming to see his company at car shows. This year, he added wireless Internet and a huge screen to his show trailer.

A website is often the first place Gen Y goes to find out about a product, so yours better be great. The days of a bit of information and a few photos are gone. Videos, links to social media sites, blogs and interactive product marketing are must-haves.

“If a company has a clunky, difficult-to-navigate website, it is DOA,” said Kahn. “Your website is a reflection of you.”
Include a ton of product information, because Gen Y buyers like to feel that they are getting all the facts. But supply that information in bite-sized pieces, because Gen Y likes to “snack” on different kinds of media, said BJ Birtwell, the 34-year old president of The Armory Marketing Group in Southern California.

“It’s not a sit-down dinner,” he said. “It’s vending-machine-style marketing.”

SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-BUSINESS

Supply information in bite-sized pieces, because Gen Y likes to “snack” on different kinds of media, said BJ Birtwell, the 34-year-old president of The Armory Marketing Group in Southern California.

Grab their attention with “visual eye candy,” be that a cool video with great music, a rock star or great product, said Larry Harvey, the 67-year-old executive producer of WebRidesTV, a site featuring videos and photos of—what else?—cars and trucks.

And remember that Gen Yers have a wide range of interests. They are interested in hot rods, low riders, import and Asian tuners, musclecars and performance cars, Oh, and they love motorcycles, said Harvey. To wit, they are into the same stuff that older generations are into. But Gen Yers have attention deficit disorder, said Harvey.

“They spend an inordinate amount of time either frantically looking for text messages or looking for videos,” he said.

Gen Y thinks events are cool, said Harvey. But just hanging a banner at an event isn’t enough to attract a Gen Y consumer, said Chris Donnelly, vice president of global strategy at Oakley. Oakley has four 18-wheelers full of Oakley products that go to events such as the Daytona 500, he said. Athletes that use Oakley products hang out there, and customers can try stuff out.

“If you think you can [market] all online, you are going to miss a huge part of Gen Y,” said Donnelly.

Don’t abandon your print marketing. Print is still huge, Hotchkis said. But make sure that your print ads stand out. To grab Gen Y eyes, throw in some comedy or riffs on classic cars, for example, Kahn said.

Personalization is big with Gen Y. With so much information at their fingertips, they are very independent in their purchasing behavior, said Scott Bower, senior vice president of global marketing and brand development at Oakley.

“They want products that define who they are,” he said.

A program on the Oakley website that allows buyers to customize sunglasses accounts for half of all Oakley’s online sunglass sales, said Bower. Oakley is expanding the customization program to other items such as backpacks, he said.

Gen Y likes to be included in conversations about products they like and consulted about new developments. Oakley has multiple online forums where it gets feedback from customers and employees, said Donnelly, and some of its sponsored athletes are starting to use Twitter.

Make sure your product pitch is also authentic. Videos on the Oakley website of athletes using its products are a crucial element of its marketing strategy.

“You can communicate more of a brand attitude on video,” said Bower. Try to fake a product’s attributes and you will get ratted out really quickly, he said.

Enthusiast forums—online discussions about specific topics—are great places to boost awareness of a product. They are one of the first places Gen Y goes to get information on a product, especially if they have a problem, said Kahn.

“They ask their 10,000 friends on the Internet how to solve it,” he said.

It’s okay for a company to post comments on its own or other forums. But don’t do it anonymously, said Birtwell. Trying to hide your identity can be a “tragic mistake,” he said.

Transparency is a must in the digital marketing world. False information spreads “like brushfire,” said Pen Pendleton, director of strategic planning at Siltanen & Partners, an advertising agency in El Segundo, California. If you make a mistake, own up to it immediately. And do it graciously. Good customer service can “save you,” said Pendelton. “Feed the Gen Y ego that needs to be treated special.”

Manpower is the biggest expense of marketing to Gen Y, said Kahn. A company needs to have at least one person devoted to nurturing its online presence every day, he said. Usually, they are members of Gen Y themselves. The average age of staffers at WebRidesTV is 25, said Harvey.

Ads aimed at Gen Y can attract older generations, too, said Harvey. For example, “cotton tops” loved Toyota’s Scion brand, though it was marketed to youths, he said. Oakley markets to attitudes rather than demographics, said Bower.
“Someone is young-minded,” he said. “Attitudes are cross-generational.”

At Hotchkis Sport Suspension, “the younger guys in the company have taught us older guys what’s cool,” said Hotchkis. “Dealing with this group has made us a better company.”

 SEMA NEWS-OCTOBER 2009-EVENTS
Prior to the Gala Mitch Williams dethroned Jim Cozzie in the Pinewood Unlimited Class.
As the Pinewood Drag Races ramped up to its thrilling conclusion, the Installation Banquet & Gala Fundraiser evening program kicked off at 6:30 p.m. with a silent auction for more than 100 Pinewood drag race cars signed by various industry and entertainment icons.

Emcee Dave McClelland hosted the ceremonies honoring SEMA Hall of Fame inductees as well as incoming and outgoing Board members. The program also featured remarks from new Chairman Rick Rollins and SEMA Cares Committee Chairman Joel Ayres.

The fundraising for Childhelp and Victory Junction didn’t stop at just the Pinewood auction and Gala. Additional donors stepped up later in the evening to take up Joel Ayres on his pledge to shave his head if certain donation criteria were met. By the end of the evening, Ayres, his wife Cindy, SEMA Board member and Show ‘N Shine organizer Mike Spagnola and SEMA Vice President of Communications and Events Peter MacGillivray all ended up on the business end of hair clippers in support of the children’s charities.

SEMA thanks all for their extraordinary volunteer efforts and encourages all who would like to volunteer for next year’s event to contact Special Events Administrator Lisa Moreno.
