The pollution-control devices have been required since 1994 in about 40 ozone non-attainment areas across the country. Individual states will still have authority to mandate the nozzles. The EPA’s decision to abandon the nozzles is part of the Obama Administration’s directive that federal agencies identify outdated regulations. A new addition this year was a product expo held in the foyer of the Rayburn House Office Building. A diverse group of SEMA-member companies displayed a variety of niche-specific products throughout the day. The expo featured Courtney Hansen, host of “Overhaulin’,” Spike TV’s “Powerblock” and Velocity Television Network’s “Vinsetta Garage.” Members of Congress and staff saw firsthand the impact of the industry on the American economy.

All of the lawmakers are members of the “Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus,” an informal, non-partisan group that pays tribute to America’s ever-growing love affair with the car and motorsports. The lawmakers also encouraged SEMA members to get involved in this important election year by hosting members of Congress at their businesses through the Congressional District Site Visit Program. These visits allow elected officials to connect in their local community with job creators and business owners while learning more about the industry.

Senators Tester and Burr announced passage earlier that day of Senate Resolution 452 (S. Res 452), designating July 13, 2012, as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.” The date marks the third commemoration in what has become an annual event to celebrate and raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. It is also the third time that Senators Tester and Burr have joined forces with SEMA to sponsor the Senate Resolution.

The day ended with an evening reception and dinner. The special guest for the evening, Rep. John Campbell (R-CA), arrived in his powder blue ’57 Ford Thunderbird and was greeted by SEMA President Chris Kersting and SEMA Board Chairman Scooter Brothers. Campbell met with Rally attendees and later delivered keynote remarks. EARLY-SEASON STRUGGLES NOT DAMPENING LANGDON’S SPIRITS: When Shawn Langdon got a call from world championship tuner Alan Johnson, he jumped at the chance to drive for one of the best in the business. Many people expected them to win races right away, and though that hasn’t been the case this season, Langdon knows that’s part of the growing pains of joining a new team, and he still has all the confidence in the world in his Al-Anabi Racing Top Fuel team: “Everything has been really good; we just haven’t had the success that we had hoped for to start off. It’s been a little tough here in the beginning, but once everything starts clicking, our chances are going to be pretty good. We know what this team is capable of, and we know what our goal is: We want to win the championship. We have the potential to go out at every racetrack and set low e.t., qualify No. 1 and win. 700: NHRA FUNNY CAR CLASS REACHES 700TH RACE IN TOPEKA: The NHRA has been around for 61 years, and as of this weekend’s Dollar General NHRA Summernationals at Heartland Park Topeka, Funny Car will have been officially contested at 700 races. There have been 88 different Funny Car winners in the 61-year history and in this shot is the Hawaiian—the 1970 Winternationals FC winner.

EARLY-SEASON STRUGGLES NOT DAMPENING LANGDON’S SPIRITS: When Shawn Langdon got a call from world championship tuner Alan Johnson, he jumped at the chance to drive for one of the best in the business. Many people expected them to win races right away, and though that hasn’t been the case this season, Langdon knows that’s part of the growing pains of joining a new team, and he still has all the confidence in the world in his Al-Anabi Racing Top Fuel team: “Everything has been really good; we just haven’t had the success that we had hoped for to start off. It’s been a little tough here in the beginning, but once everything starts clicking, our chances are going to be pretty good. We know what this team is capable of, and we know what our goal is: We want to win the championship. I have the confidence of knowing that we could have the best race car out here based on what these guys have done in the past. We have the potential to go out at every racetrack and set low e.t., qualify No. 1 and win. Alan has always been one step ahead of everybody else, and when Alan says we’ll be fine, I take his word for it.”

700: NHRA FUNNY CAR CLASS REACHES 700TH RACE IN TOPEKA: The NHRA has been around for 61 years, and as of this weekend’s Dollar General NHRA Summernationals at Heartland Park Topeka, Funny Car will have been officially contested at 700 races. There have been 88 different Funny Car winners in the 61-year history and in this shot is the Hawaiian—the 1970 Winternationals FC winner.

For the fifth consecutive year, Ford Customer Service Division has partnered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to host a race car design contest. This year’s theme is a patriotic one that honors everyday heroes—from those who serve the United States in the military, fire or police forces to children who soldier on every day with a disease that has no known cause or cure.
