Held regularly at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the HRIA Builders Panel Education Session took place in 2021, both entertaining and educating attendees about how to thrive as a hot-rod builder. As with all 2021 SEMA Show seminars, a recording of the seminar “Hot Rod Builders Drive the Vintage Segment, Powered by HRIA” is now available at www.semashow.com/education.

Education

The HRIA Builders Panel Education Session that took place at the 2021 SEMA Show both entertained and educated attendees about how to thrive as a hot-rod builder.

The one-hour program features SEMA Hall of Fame member Rick Love as moderator, with an impressive lineup of award-winning builders: Bobby Alloway, Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop; Jonathan Goolsby, Goolsby Customs; Tim Strange, Strange Motion; Will Posey, Big Oak Garage; and Brian Brennan, author, In the Garage Media.

Viewers will hear the panel’s best-kept secrets and advice for running a successful hot-rod business, what they wish they would have known at the beginning of their careers and how they built a successful brand over the years.

“It’s the people in the industry, and that’s what you have to connect with,” says Brennan. “As a builder or a shop owner, you have to be able to connect with that person [your client]. Some are nice, some are not so nice, but you have to decide ‘what can I work with and what I can’t’ because if you’re not true to yourself or your brand, you’re going to screw up big time. Hone those communication skills you have.”

Pros and cons of taking a build to car shows, finding and keeping quality employees and utilizing renderings when project planning was also discussed.

The seminar recording is one of many available at www.semashow.com/education. New recordings are added weekly. Other recently added seminars include:

  • “DSP Fundamentals: Leverage the Power of DSP to Deliver Great-Sounding Car Audio Systems”
  • “Black Ink: Cashflow Management Secrets Your Accountant Never Shared”
  • “EV and the Accessorization Game, Powered by PRO”
  • “Synthetic Fuels: Paving the Way for the Future of ICEs? Powered by ETTN”

Visit www.semashow.com/education to view and access the entire collection.

VW

This is the upcoming, ’22 VW Amarok undergoing testing in metro Detroit. The new Amarok will represent the second generation of the nameplate and will be based on the next-gen Ford Ranger. As a result, it will be bigger than the last-generation model and will offer more technology and more ground clearance.

Inside, the new Amarok will receive a host of high-quality materials in upper-end trims, aligning with the ongoing trend where truck buyers are looking for more refinement from their trucks as they use them for work, play and personal use. That said, base models more strongly oriented at work will offer barebones cabin accoutrements.

An evolved version of VW's turbodiesel 3.0L V6 will power the truck. In its most powerful form, the engine is rated at 255 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s currently unclear which transmission will do shifting duty, however.

The new model will be built in South Africa and is expected to make its debut over the next few months. There’s nothing official that would suggest that the new Amarok will be sold in the United States.

TORAThis week’s SEMA Truck and Off-Road Alliance (TORA) member spotlight is Northwest Seat Covers.

Get to know the story behind the company, and what projects they are currently working on in SEMA’s interview with company CEO Steven Koyoma below.

SEMA: Tell us the story of your company.

Steven Koyoma: Northwest Seat Covers was established in 1997. We started in a 32x16-ft. space within Seat Cover Centre, in Vancouver, British Columbia. We quickly outgrew the space. When we hired our first three sewing machine operators and started to occupy three automotive bays, we knew it was time to leave.

However, what a year to launch the business! In 1997, the new F-150 was launched, then in 1998 the new Dodge Ram was released and finally in 1999 the Chevy Silverado was redesigned with a completely new interior. Those three new models and three years generated enough business to establish us as a contender in the seat-cover industry.

SEMA: What was your company’s breakthrough moment?

SK: We’ve experienced many breakthrough moments throughout the years. Some have come from working with OEMs to designing products which have opened new doors that were previously thought to be fairly impenetrable. Other moments have come from really hard work trying to find simple solutions to complex problems.

Oftentimes, breakthrough moments happen when you least expect them. Back in the ’90s, I remember when we were trying different designs to accommodate a console storage unit in a Ford F-150. We were scratching our heads for quite a while when a young boy, about 10 years old, walked up to us and just watched for about five minutes and asked us what we were trying to do. We explained that we were trying to find a way to accommodate the full functionality of the console top lid. He looked at the console lid for about one minute and said, “Why don't you cut a hole here?” The designers looked at each other and sort of shook their heads because the boy had offered up a simple solution that would allow the storage section and clip holder to be fully accessible and functional. It was one of those moments.

SEMA: Tell us about your business now and projects you are working on.

SK: We are looking at different ways to incorporate the concept of a circular economy within our business. That means taking a hard look at what we buy, from whom, how we incorporate the material into the product and how the customer uses and disposes of the product at the end of its lifecycle. This may involve changing the quality of what we use as input materials, but it can also include eco-friendly helpers to upgrade some products to biodegradable or even compostable.

SEMA: Tell us about a product that you are proud of.

SK: There have been many products that we are proud of. During the development of our Form-Fit seat covers, we actually test-fit the prototypes on every single model we could find at all of the new car dealerships. We were asked by an OEM to produce a portable four-way lumbar that was cost effective, easy to install and use. We don’t know of another four-way lumbar support system that provides this type of functionality in a portable format. Global first?

SEMA: What advice do you have for young professionals contemplating a career in the automotive aftermarket?

SK: We’ve partnered with one of the local colleges and their upholstery program. Every year that they have brought students through to see what is involved in manufacturing on a larger scale, we’ve offered career advice to anyone who was interested.

We usually offer a two-part bit of advice:

1. Find an aspect of the automotive aftermarket that you can get excited about. It may involve performance, new technology or design. Whatever it is, it should resonate strongly from within. Passion will fuel the imagination and provide plenty of enjoyment throughout their career.

2. The second bit of advice we offer is to somehow gain some practical experience. In many situations this may involve seeking out a mentor—someone who is willing to take an interest in helping to develop you, listen to you and to guide you through the process and offer career advice. Mentors can often be an amazing way to learn. You will meet new people and develop your own connections and gain the confidence and knowledge to be respected by peers. It can change your life.

Fill out a TORA-member spotlight form to highlight how your company is contributing to the truck and off-road specialty-equipment industry. Selected candidates are eligible to be featured on TORA’s social media, SEMA eNews and future TORA member updates.

SEMA ShowApplications for the 2022 SEMA Show are now available at www.semashow.com/buyabooth. The event taking place November 1-4 in Las Vegas is the premier automotive trade event in the world.

SEMA Show

With more than 100,000 professionals in attendance at the 2021 SEMA Show, the event was Las Vegas’ No. 1-attended trade show last year. It also marked the Las Vegas Convention Center’s first full-capacity event since the pandemic.

Manufacturers of automotive parts and accessories exhibit at the SEMA Show to promote new products, increase brand awareness, generate leads for future orders, build and strengthen relationships through in-person networking, and generate media coverage.

“Nothing compares to the SEMA Show. There’s a unique energy and mystique about the Show that makes it the ideal place for manufacturers to promote their products and raise brand awareness,” said SEMA Vice President of Events Tom Gattuso. “With buyers and media from all over the world in attendance, exhibitors have unlimited opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations that lead to profitable business partnerships.”

With more than 100,000 professionals in attendance at the 2021 SEMA Show, the event was Las Vegas’ No. 1-attended trade show last year. It also marked the Las Vegas Convention Center’s first full-capacity event since the pandemic. Exhibitors found valuable ROI by participating at the Show, with nearly all participants rating their experience as positive and noting that they plan to return in 2022.
