In a one-hour panel discussion on SEMA360, panelists presented insights on how fundamental shifts in industry and society will create new opportunities for manufacturing businesses, large and small.

“The revolution is now, it’s being live-streamed today,” said moderator John Waraniak. “Once to grow, you could run a different race, or you could run the same race faster. Today, you have to do both.”

Carla Bailo, president and CEO, Center for Automotive Research (CAR), told how COVID-19 has propelled change and changed thinking in transportation and associated manufacturing. The assembly line of the future will include a lot more automation, and manufacturers will need to pivot to adjust their business models as the health crisis continues. There will be more demand for home delivery and manufacturers need to be prepared for supply-chain disruptions, and the days of three-year, five-year product-development cycles are over. “COVID-19 is giving us opportunities as never before…Think about how you can delight the customer.”

Mouse McCoy (HackRod Studio MFG) made the point that manufacturing has become digital and virtual. The ”digital twin” process, in which teams around the country work on a digital file in the cloud, make it possible do develop and simulate a complex product such as a car digitally before production. Once the digital product is tested through simulation, the file can be transferred to an advanced production facility and produced. This will lead to mass customization and personalization for customers—an exponential opportunity.

Nigel Francis, CEO and executive director, ALMMII/LIFT, runs a non-profit that enhances collaboration between industry, academia, and the department of defense. He revealed ground-breaking processes, such as linear friction welding and wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), that are already in use, enabling the joining of dissimilar materials and flexible joining. These processes will enable mass-customization of product for small- and medium-size companies.

“Any color you like as long as it’s black doesn’t work any more,” he said. Personalization must increase, and the customer will dictate their preferences. That trend drives the opportunities in manufacturing of the future.

It wouldn’t be the SEMA Show without show-stopping builds and customizations, and while there’s no show floor in Las Vegas this year, SEMA360 is no different. More than 300 builders entered some of their latest creations, and you can see them throughout the week at the SEMA360 Builder Showcase page. We’ll be spotlighting five awesome builds each day of the event, starting with the ones you see here.

It's the last day of SEMA360, and attendees have already connected with hundreds of top manufacturers that have introduced new products and highlighting signature brands throughout the week.

Here is a small sample of some of the products announced on SEMA360.

Baxter Performance
BaxterBaxter Performance Toyota Cartridge to Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter

Engineers agree that most engine wear occurs at engine startup. Engine oil delivery and pressure is the single most important component to mitigate this wear condition.

With the advent of automotive manufactures reverting to cartridge style filters, Baxter Performance has discovered a significant delay in oil delivery and pressure to critical wear components and systems that require oil pressure to function, such as cam chain tensioners and variable valve timing mechanisms.

Using Baxter Performance adapters solve these issues by converting the cartridge style oil filter to a spin-on oil filter that contains an anti-drain back valve for immediate oil delivery at startup.

Performance Distributors
PentastarPentastar V6 SOS Coils

Performance Distributors newest SOS Coils are now available for the 3.6 Liter Pentastar V6. Our new Pentastar SOS (Sultans Of Spark) Coils are designed with updated technology and enhanced windings. This has allowed us to increase voltage for each coil from 25,000 (stock voltage) to 35,000 volts under load. That’s 10,000 more volts per coil! The extra voltage under load, also known as the acceleration phase, increases spark intensity for a more complete burn of the fuel mixture.

Plug gaps can be opened to .065″ and this improves throttle response, horsepower and fuel mileage. Additional benefits include quicker starting and smoother idle.

Pentastar SOS Coils feature brass terminals for corrosion resistance and improved conduction. SOS Coils mount in the OEM location with no modifications.

AFCO Performance Group PRO Shocks A2 Double Adjustable

AFCOThe new A2/ACF2 Series offers independent high- and low-speed adjustability. By having a low-speed adjuster through the rod end, the user is given the ability to make easier and faster valve changes. By separating the high and low speed in the system, the A2/ACF2 shock gives multiple rebound valving options while maintaining little to no hysteresis.

SEMA presented its top honors during a special SEMA Awards Celebration held Thursday night during the week of SEMA360.

Winners of the prestigious awards are:

  • SEMA Person of the Year: Myles Kovacs, DUB Publishing Inc.
  • SEMA Gen-III Innovator of the Year: Brendan McGrath, Dyme Performance Systems Inc.
  • SEMA Manufacturer of the Year: Redline Detection

Although unable to celebrate in-person in Las Vegas, hundreds of viewers watched on the SEMA Show YouTube Channel as the SEMA Awards Celebration took place online. The 50-minute program provided the industry, honorees and friends and family with an opportunity to celebrate top leaders in the industry.

“Through these extraordinary times, we are honored to recognize individuals and companies that have met the challenges of this year and embody the spirit of our industry,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “Now more than ever, it is important for our community to come together and celebrate our successes.”

The evening began by recognizing new SEMA Hall of Fame inductees Rich Barsamian, Advanced Clutch Technology; Jack Chisenhall, Vintage Air; John Gaines, G&M Performance Parts; and Joe St. Lawrence, RTM Productions.

Myles Kovacs, cofounder of automotive magazine DUB, received the association’s most prestigious award for SEMA Person of the Year. Kovacs founded DUB in 2000 and through “DUB Revolution” has transformed the way businesses approach and succeed in reaching the youth market. Kovacs is an avid supporter of SEMA and uses his influence to promote the industry. He has volunteered for and served on several SEMA task forces, including the chair of the Gen-III Innovator of the Year task force, the SEMA Show committee and as a SEMA Scholarship judge.

“I am just so thrilled; it’s emotional and overwhelming,” said Kovacs. “I’m being recognized by my peers, and this is such a great industry to be a part of. And, they praise you for being different. That’s what I love about SEMA.”

The SEMA Gen-III Innovator of the Year award was presented to Brendan McGrath, CEO of Dyme Performance Systems Inc. As founder of Dyme PSI, McGrath developed an industry world first product and has the opportunity to play a role in the disruption of supplying this multi-billion dollar commodity around the world in every industry, including medical, food, aerospace, oil/gas and, of course, automotive.

Along with the Person of the Year and Gen-III Innovator of the Year, Redline Detection was selected SEMA Manufacturer of the Year. From the world’s leading OEMs to individual technicians, Redline Detection has built a global customer base for its professional-grade diagnostic solutions, as well as its ability to increase the bottom line for its clients. Redline's SpeedSmoke is just one SKU in its product lineup designed to pinpoint leaks in sealed systems within vehicles from naturally aspirated to turbocharged, diesel and even boosted engines.

The awards recognize outstanding commitment to the industry and a high level of involvement with SEMA committees, task forces, councils or board of directors’ participation.
