Early this morning, not far from Honda's U.S. facilities, we were lucky enough to get a quick glance at the next-generation Acura TSX. The new TSX will take on a more aggressive look, taking design cues from the Sports 4 concept car shown at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show.

An improved 2.4L i-VTEC four-cylinder motor will go into the base model with an expected 20–30–hp bump. The entry-level model will sport either a six-speed manual, or five-speed auto, and will be front-wheel drive.

A hotter Type-S model should also appear with power coming from the 260-hp turbocharged motor also found in the Acura RDX. The sportier model will feature a six-speed auto/manual DSG gearbox, and is expected to feature Honda's Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system. While this vehicle will be sold as the Acura TSX in the United States, this same car, with just a few minor styling adjustments, will also sell in European markets as the new Honda Accord.

With the 2008 Honda Accord getting a diesel motor, it is possible that we could see a diesel TSX as well. Look for the TSX to start production towards the end of 2008.

SEMA appointed Petra Smeltzer as the association's new director of congressional affairs. Ms. Smeltzer joins SEMA with a broad range of public policy experience. She has a varied government relations background that spans both the state and federal government relations arenas and has substantial advocacy experience working within trade association environments of the energy sector. Her previous positions include working for the American Petroleum Institute, the Electric Power Supply Association and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. She also served as the federal liaison to Gov. Bob Taft (R-OH) where she advocated energy and environmental issues before Congress on behalf of the state of Ohio.

“Petra brings to SEMA a wealth of experience in government relations, legislative analyses and advocacy, as well as the development and implementation of policy,”  SEMA’s Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald commented. “We are pleased to have someone of her experience to supplement our continuing efforts on Capitol Hill to educate the federal legislature on the impact of our industry on the health of the nation’s economy. The breadth of her knowledge on environmental and business issues of critical importance to the aftermarket will provide SEMA with an effective advocate and a valuable resource in our efforts to protect and advance the aftermarket industry.”

SEMA maintains an experienced government affairs staff and legal team in Washington, D.C. Responsible for communicating and advocating issues affecting the specialty automotive aftermarket, SEMA’s government affairs office has proven to be an influential and effective force in ensuring the continued growth and prosperity of the industry.

“I am pleased to join an organization with a proven track record of legislative successes,” said Smeltzer, who began her new job on October 15.  She can be reached directly at petras@sema.org or 202/783-6007, ext. 19.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to change the way a manufacturer assigns the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to make sure there is a nearly endless number of possible combinations. The VIN is a grouping of 17 digits and letters unique to every car and truck in the United States but the current supply is shrinking (VIN positions: 1–3 identify manufacturer, 4–8 vehicle attributes, 9 accuracy code, 10 model year, 11 manufacturing plant, 12–17 sequential production numbers).

The NHTSA cannot solve the problem by simply adding numbers since too many computer software programs for governments, automakers, etc., are tied to the 17-digit program. Instead, the NHTSA is proposing to change the digit sequence and ease restrictions on the use of letters and digits in order to increase the possible combinations.

LLEWELLYN, SCELZI ROLL LUCKY 7’S IN COUNTDOWN TO 4: Only three drivers among the 16 who finished the regular season in fifth through eighth place advanced to the Countdown to 1 and two of those three came from the No. 7 slot—Gary Scelzi in Funny Car and Peggy Llewellyn in Pro Stock Motorcycle. The only other outsider to crash the party was Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Chip Ellis, who finished the regular season in fifth place. Outside of those three—who displaced John Force, Angelle Sampey and Karen Stoffer—the Countdown to 1 field was chalk with 13 of the 16 top four drivers in the regular season advancing to the Countdown to 1.

TOP FUEL RACERS READY FOR $100,000 BONUS IN TECHNICOAT SHOOTOUT: Tony Schumacher will start from the No. 1 position in the Technicoat Top Fuel Shootout on October 27, during the seventh annual ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The series began with the 2006 ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas and ended at the 2007 Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park near Richmond, Virginia. Other racers who have earned a position in the Technicoat Shootout include three time winner Larry Dixon, 2004 winner Dave Grunbic, three-time runner-up Cory McClenathan, 2002 runner-up Brandon Bernstein, 2006 runner-up Rod Fuller, Melanie Troxel, and J.R. Todd.

HD PARTNERS, NHRA ENTER INTO AGREEMENT: On May 30, 2007, NHRA entered into an agreement with HD Partners Acquisition Corporation (AMEX: HDP) for the acquisition by HDP of the NHRA’s professional drag racing assets, including the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, together with a broad set of commercialization rights. The transaction is subject to HDP shareholder approval. Interested persons are advised to read HDP’s preliminary proxy statement on file at the SEC and the definitive proxy statement, when available. More information about HDP and the agreement with the NHRA is also available at www.hdpartnersacquisition.com.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

NHRA SPORT COMPACT WORLD FINALS, AUTO CLUB RACEWAY AT POMONA, OCTOBER 20–21: The best drivers in the NHRA Xplod Sport Compact Series will gather at the famous Auto Club Raceway in Pomona for the final event of the 2007 Sport Compact Season.

ACDELCO LAS VEGAS NHRA NATIONALS, THE STRIP AT LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY, OCTOBER 25–28: The Countdown to One begins with the Top 4 in each professional category battling it out for POWERade World Championships. The 2007 Technicoat Top Fuel Shootout also will take place at the event, pitting the top drivers in Top Fuel battling against each other for $100,000 and bragging rights.

AUTO CLUB NHRA FINALS, AUTO CLUB RACEWAY AT POMONA, NOVEMBER 1–4: In the final race of the season, the top four drivers in each professional category will all be fighting for the POWERade World Championship. Defending event winners include Tony Schumacher, John Force, Greg Anderson and Craig Treble.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

9: The number of drivers in the Countdown to 1 who have never won a POWERade Series world championship. The remaining seven drivers among the 16 finalists—Larry Dixon (2), Tony Schumacher (4), Tony Pedregon (1), Gary Scelzi (4), Greg Anderson (3), Jeg Coughlin (2) and Andrew Hines (3)—have combined to win 19 POWERade Series world championships.

DRIVERS TELL ALL

FUNNY CAR DRIVER RON CAPPS ON HIS OWN PERSONAL GROUNDHOG DAY: Ron Capps entered the final qualifying session at the final race of the Countdown to 4 unqualified and a DNQ meant he would not advance into the Countdown to 1, the two-race championship that culminates the NHRA Playoffs. It began a series of four straight must passes that Capps nailed one after the other to get into the Countdown to 1: “I felt like I was stuttering because I kept telling ESPN this is the most important round of our life … and that was the last qualifying run. Then we get in and we have Robert Hight first round and I said it again. Our season is over if we lose this. And we had to keep (winning) every time (teammate) Gary (Scelzi) would win so I felt like I was stuttering. I kept saying this is the most important round of my life.”

Topic
As the chief enforcement officer for the National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mr. Smith will lead a discussion on regulatory restrictions of critical importance to companies that source products from other countries: importers. Participants will be provided with authoritative guidance on how importers share all of the same obligations and responsibilities as manufacturers, including the application of measures that self-certify products covered by NHTSA safety standards. It is incumbent on all wheel and tire manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and shop owners to attend what is being praised by industry experts as a very timely seminar. Mr. Smith will discuss the NHTSA’s enforcement activity as the regulations apply to wheels and tires, such as compliance with FMVSS No. 139 (passenger and light-truck tires) and FMVSS No. 138 (tire-pressure monitoring systems), emphasizing its importance to all companies doing business in the tire and wheel industry.
