London newspaper The Independent reports that the Dakar Rally, the legendary race across the Sahara deemed one of motorsport's toughest and most dangerous competitions, has been cancelled for the first time in its 30-year history because of security fears.

Race organizers Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) made the last-minute decision following the recent murders of four French tourists in Mauritania, as well as threats from terrorist groups against the rally itself, which was due to start in Lisbon on Friday.

"No other decision but the cancellation of the sporting event could be taken," the ASO said in a statement.

"[We] condemn the terrorist menace that annihilates a year of hard work, engagement and passion for all the participants." Three gunmen, who police suspect were linked to al-Qaida, shot dead four French tourists having a roadside picnic in Mauritania on December 24 near the border with Senegal. The killings prompted the French government to issue a security warning to the ASO.

The Dakar Rally, which used to start in Paris but for the past two years has departed from the Portuguese capital, has a checkered history with plenty of security headaches.

In 1991, a French driver for the Citroën team was shot dead in Mali in a killing that appeared to be linked to the conflict between Tuareg rebels and the national army. In 2000, organizers were forced to halt the race in Niger, in order to put in place an emergency airlift to neighboring Libya. Last year, threats by an al-Qaida- affiliated group to kidnap drivers led to two stages of the race through Mali being axed, including one to the fabled desert town of Timbuktu. Until now, however, no threat was deemed serious enough to call off the entire 4,000-mile race.

About 570 teams had registered to take part in this year's event. Their support vehicles had already set off and the fuel needed to power the cars over the dunes was sent ahead. "We worked for months and invested lots of money," Andre Dessoud, the head of the Nissan team, told Reuters news agency. "I don't have a clue what we're going to do."

Cyril Neveu, a five-time Dakar winner in the motorbike category, acknowledged the race could have been targeted by terrorists. "It is a big caravan of more than 3,000 people," he told the French broadcaster i-Télé. "Providing security from the first to the last competitor is an onerous job. One cannot say there was zero risk."

The cancellation will also hurt the villages and cities which enjoy an economic windfall from the rally. The head of the hoteliers' association in Senegal, where the race was due to end on January 20, said the losses would run into hundreds of thousands of dollars and the bad publicity could hurt the country's image as a tourist destination.

Not everyone will mourn the lack of a rally this year, however. Organizers have been criticized for sending powerful racing cars speeding through the sands and savannahs of countries where some residents are not made sufficiently aware. In 2006, children in Guinea and Senegal died after being hit by rally vehicles.

The ASO insisted the rally would return next year. "Cancellation does not endanger the future of the Dakar," it said. "The Dakar is a symbol and nothing can destroy symbols.

"Threat of terrorist attack forces cancellation of Dakar Rally," Claire Soares, The Independent, January 5, 2008.

DISMISSED: U.S. District Court Judge William O. Bertelsman dismissed Kentucky Speedway’s antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR January 7. Kentucky Speedway officials were seeking more than $200 million in damages and a change in the way NASCAR conducts business. Kentucky Speedway attorneys said they will appeal the decision.

REPEATER: Jimmie Johnson was selected by the panel of voting media as the Driver of the Year for the second-straight season. Johnson is only the third (Jeff Gordon, Darrell Waltrip) driver to win the award, which is starting its 42nd season, in back-to-back years.

FAST AGAIN: Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was fastest on the first day of testing for the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway January 7.

STILL THE SAME: Testing for the Rolex 24 at Daytona got under way in earnest, but the Chip Ganassi Racing entry of defending race winners Scott Pruett and Juan Montoya was again at the top of the speed charts. The pair will share driving duties with Dario Franchitti and Memo Rojas.

COMPROMISE: American Le Mans Series officials will add 25 kilograms to its LMP2 sports cars in an effort to keep them from overpowering the LMP1 Audis. The change is in violation of the rules leased to the series by the governing body of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Automobile Club du L’Ouest.

SKIPPING OUT: Unable to schedule more than a handful of dates for the 2008 season, the Sprint Car Racing Association, which sanctions 360 non-winged sprint-car racing in California, will sit out the season, instead focusing on a return in 2009.

Drivers from NHRA and NASCAR competed in both a NHRA vs. NASCAR event, and individual overall competition during the three-day challenge. Lucas was forced to share sleds with Said after the back axle broke through the fiberglass body of his Lucas Oil-sponsored bobsled before the final round. Pro Stock Champion Jeg Coughlin was the only NHRA driver to advance to the final round in the overall event contested by all 15 drivers, picking up the bronze medal with his third-place finish. NHRA pro racers Bob Vandergriff, Phil Burkart and J.R. Todd also competed in the event.

THREE-TIME PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE CHAMPION SAMPEY FINDS RIDE WITH KLEMENT RACING: After weeks of speculation and rumors, Pro Stock Motorcycle team owners Karl and Kim Klement announced that three-time NHRA POWERade champion Angelle Sampey will pilot their Rush Racing Products Buell in 2008. But Brown began his journey towards the Top Fuel class last year before the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals, making his first run during testing at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In his latest blog on www.nhra.com, Brown discusses what it’s like to move from Pro Stock Motorcycle to Top Fuel dragsters. “I was in the staging lanes before the run and I got strapped in tight by my right-hand man Rip Reynolds, and it felt like I almost couldn’t breathe,” Brown said. “On the bike, I’m not used to being strapped in and confined to a cockpit. Once I got the car staged and the tree came down, I hit the throttle and I felt the coolest sensation ever. It’s hard to describe unless you do it. I shut off around 150-feet out. My eyes perked up, and in my mind I was hooked like a big mouth bass.”
