Hot Rod Council Membership to Meet

Dennis Overholser and Rick Love will be taking their new positions as HRIA Chairman and Chair-elect on July 1. They would like to invite and encourage all council member companies and their employees to attend the HRIA membership meeting in Columbus, Ohio, on July 9. The meeting is held in conjunction with the 12th Annual Goodguys PPG Nationals. The meeting location is the Ohio Expo Center in the Expo Building. The meeting begins at 3:00 p.m.

Come meet and greet HRIA’s newly seated select committee members and hear what the HRIA is doing for its members. For further information contact Jan Desma, 909/396-0289 x 134.

HRIA Announces Incoming Chair-Elect

On July 1, 2009, the HRIA Select Committee chairmanship will be passed from Jeanette Ladina to the current chair-elect, Dennis Overholser. At that time, a new chair-elect will be installed. Rick Love of Vintage Air has been selected for this position, which will inevitably lead to the chair position in just over two years. During the next two years, Love will be learning and assisting Overholser on the focus and direction of the HRIA Select Committee.

Love is currently the executive vice president of Vintage Air Inc. He has been involved in the hot-rod industry since the late '70s when he built his first hot rod during his senior year in high school. He built several hot rods in the early '80s and began to do A/C installations, which led him to become an authorized dealer and installer for Vintage Air products. Through this association, he began to work with them on product development, which eventually led to a full-time position. Love has been vice president at Vintage Air since 1998.

When asked about his passion for the industry, Love said, "My hobby has evolved into a career, but I also remain a dedicated enthusiast at heart." Love still has the '39 Ford coupe he built in 1984, and it has more than 140,000 miles on it so far. Love also has a '32 Ford coupe and a '72 Camaro RS Pro Touring car, both of which are driven regularly.

To round out his life, Love and his wife Linda, whom he has been married to for 15 years, have a 13-year-old son Matt. "My other hobbies are sports, especially basketball, and I enjoy being involved with my son’s sports activities," said Love.

Love has been an HRIA Select Committee member since 2005 and said, "I am looking forward to moving into the chair-elect position in July. I think two of the most important issues ahead for our industry are continuing to promote youth involvement and focusing on legislation that will encourage the growth of our hobby and industry. The next generation of passionate car guys and car gals are the key to sustaining the steady growth that we have enjoyed. It is equally important that we have consistent processes and legislation throughout the country to register and license our specialty vehicles so that we may continue to drive and enjoy them."

Love believes that SEMA and its councils such as HRIA can help mobilize support for these issues and keep them in the forefront.

Six Seats Open for HRIA Select Committee

Nominations for a seat on the HRIA Select Committee took place the week of May 18, 2009. HRIA member companies should expect to receive candidate campaign materials in the mail shortly. Each HRIA member company is asked to review and consider their choices carefully.

We congratulate the following nominees for making the slate:

Del Austin – Egge Machine Co. Inc. – Incumbent
S. Kellie Colf – Eaton Detroit Spring – Incumbent
Douglas Frymer – Law Office of Douglas A. Frymer
Ray Gorman – Stainless Steel Brakes Corp.
Michael Kunzman – Michael Kunzman & Associates
Bob Millard – Championship Auto Show/ISCA
Eric Saltrick – Steele Rubber Products – Incumbent
Vince Sica – Power Master (MCI Inc.)
Bret Voelkel – Air Ride Technologies

The willingness of these candidates to volunteer their time to give back to the 300+ HRIA member companies is welcomed. The ability to take off company and personal hats to work for the good of the entire HRIA membership and not for personal gain is one of the most honorable traits a Select Committee member holds. We are pleased to have their interest, dedication and support in this unique alliance.

Each HRIA company will be asked to vote for six of these exceptional, dedicated individuals. We wish all the candidates well with their election campaigns.

Questions regarding HRIA council elections can be directed to the chairman of the nominations/elections committee, Dennis Overholser at 817/244-6212 x1008 or Council Relations Director Jan Desma at 909/396-0289 x134.

TORA Long-Range Planning Meeting Moves to Pasadena

TORA members can pack plenty of activity around this year’s annual Long-Range Planning (LRP) Meeting. Scheduled for Thursday, July 30, at the Westin Hotel in Pasadena, California from 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., the meeting is being held in conjunction with the annual SEMA Installation Banquet & Gala Fundraiser at the Pasadena Convention Center on Saturday, August 1. The SEMA Pinewood Drag Race and the SEMA Show 'N Shine car show are also on tap for that day.

Sandwiched between the Thursday LRP meeting and Saturday’s SEMA festivities at the Convention Center, Friday is available for attendees to see West Coast clients or spend a free day in Old Town Pasadena. Old Town is filled with an eclectic mix of shops, stores and restaurants that easily make a full day of sightseeing within walking distance of the Westin and Convention Center.

“This is a tough year for everyone,” said TORA Chairman Ron DiVincenzo. “A West Coast trip may not make sense on the surface, but we wanted to hold the meeting in conjunction with some other event so that members could combine two trips into one. With the postponement of the TSTC in March, the only other big event coming up is the SEMA Show in November.

"At the SEMA Show, everyone is already overwhelmed, and it’s really not a good venue at which to conduct long-range planning. While this may keep some of our East Coast and Midwest companies from attending, on a positive note we’re hoping that some of the West Coast members, who rarely come east for an LRP, can attend this year’s meeting.”

Please contact TORA Staff Liaison Jim Skelly for more information.

SEMA members have several resources available to them as part of their overall SEMA membership package, including market research reports designed to help decision-making processes, which are especially crucial during tough economic times. One report, the 2008 Trends and forecasts Fourth Quarter Update, offers readers vehicle sales statistics, consumer buyer behavior and much more. A short excerpt of the report is shown below.

SUV sales took quite a beating in 2008 (no surprise) with the fourth quarter representing the harshest in terms of sales declines for the segment. Here is the breakdown of how total SUV sales fared each quarter compared to the same time in 2007:

  • Q1–26%
  • Q2–39%
  • Q3–43%
  • Q4–50%

Final 2008 sales peg the segment at a 39% decline over 2007. Simply put, consumers have retracted from purchasing SUVs either to hold off a new-vehicle purchase altogether or make a shift to buying a smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicle.

In the U.S. there are currently 35.4 million SUVs registered and in operation today. Despite that sales of new vehicles in the segment are shrinking, the sheer size of the SUV market still makes it relevant to the specialty-equipment industry. These vehicles still have practical use as family haulers and weekend off-roaders.

As far as overall sales expected for 2009, AutoPacific offered the following stats:

  • large SUV: 257,300 (-24%)
  • luxury SUV: 88,000 (-35%)
  • mainstream midsize SUV: 121,300 (-27%)
  • offroad SUV: 86,600 (-22%)
  • and premium midsize SUV: 222,300 (-40%)

Added together, that could mean that fewer than 800,000 SUVs will sell in 2009.

The two vehicles that for the most part encapsulate the offroad SUV segment, the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota FJ Cruiser, are also favorites among enthusiasts and SEMA Show exhibitors. During the 2008 SEMA Show, both had a heavy presence within the Show arena as displays of manufacturers’ latest off-road products.

Of the more than 3,000 enthusiasts that responded to SEMA’s annual Automotive Lifestyles survey, 8% said they owned an SUV or CUV, and of these consumers, 87% indicated that they purchased specialty equipment for their vehicles within the last year.

The average amount spent per enthusiast was around $2,600. The average age and incomes of SUV/CUV owners was 41 and $88,000, respectively.

  Manufacturers Sales Projections

 SEMA Benchmarking-Manufacturers

Manufacturers are becoming more opportunistic. More have submitted "up" forecasts for the coming months.
 Distributors Sales Projections

 SEMA Benchmarking-Distributors

Distributors have a less positive outlook than manufacturers.
 Retail Sales Projections

 SEMA Benchmarking-Retailers

Much like distributors, retailers have a more negative perspective.

Part of the new SEMA Financial Benchmarking Program is a question about the company’s expectations about sales for the next three months. Here is a four-month summary of sales projections for each market channel:

Although the benchmarking program is still in the early stage, we are starting to see some interesting trends worth noting and tracking over time.

Manufacturers
Going into the summer months, manufacturers have the most optimistic sales outlook in the industry. Twenty-seven percent of manufacturers project sales to increase over last year and 40.7% expect sales to remain the same.

As you can see from the table and graph, the “down” group has decreased significantly since January going from 45% to 31.9%. Subsequently the “flat” responders have increased from 34% to 40.7%. After a drop in March to 19.8%, the “up” segment saw a sharp increase in April to 27.4%.

Based on the analysis of manufacturers’ sales distribution by type of customers, we know roughly half (48%) of their business is to distributors. The data shows, however, that distributors do not have as positive a sales outlook going into summer.

There is anecdotal evidence that distributor and retailer inventory is down, so perhaps manufacturers are basing their projections on needing to “fill the pipeline” for the summer months. They could also be looking to other types of customers to meet their sales projections.

Distributors
Distributors have a more negative sales outlook for the summer months than either manufacturers or retailers. While more than half (58%) project summer sales to be up or flat, the remaining 42% expect sales to be down over last year.

The data shows a sharp increase in the “down” responses in April, which had held at 34% to 36% from January to March and increased to 42% in April. The percentage of companies projecting sales to be “up” decreased in January, February and March and held the same at 28% in April.

Overall we feel the data seems to reflect the struggle this market channel is currently experiencing.

Retail
Overall, 67% of retailers expect summer sales to be up or flat, with the largest percentage (43%) projecting sales to be flat.
Sales projections for the retail channel change more significantly month-to-month than manufacturers and distributors.

The “up” group, for example, increased from 25.56% in January to 31.78% in February and then to 26.8% in March. The “down” responders increased from 25.8% in March to 32.9% in April. We feel the month-to-month changes we are seeing can be attributed to retailers’ direct connection to consumers and their fluctuating behaviors and attitudes based on the current economic environment.

Summary
In all three channels, the number of companies projecting “flat” sales jumped significantly in March (for May, June and July sales) and then decreased in April (for June, July, and August sales).

In all three groups, the number of companies projecting both “up” and “down” sales dropped in March. The difference in April was that manufacturers were more optimistic with an increase in “up." Distributors had no change in “up” and retailers were less optimistic and had a decrease in “up.”

Comparison to Industry Index (PADI)
SEMA also has a program to measure the future purchase intentions of consumers for the next three months. It is interesting to compare the trendline for industry companies expecting sales to be up and that of consumers expecting to buy industry products for the next three months.

As you review the following graph, you will notice that all the trendlines have converged in April. You will also see that with the exception of April, the WDs mirror consumer expectations fairly closely. But overall, the retailers seem to follow the consumers in the basic trend.
