Program That Helps Launch Careers to Begin Again in December 2009

SEMA NEWS-NOVEMBER 2009-MEMBER NEWS

The buildup and auction of a project vehicle has been one of the major fundraising efforts for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund. This year, the buildup of a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is being overseen by former SEMA Chairman Nate Shelton of B&M. Look for the Camaro and your chance to make a bid at the 2009 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Proceeds from the auction will go directly to the scholarship fund. In 2008, there were 225 applications for SEMA scholarships of $1,000–$4,000, and 93 were awarded, in addition to seven loan-forgiveness awards for a total of $133,000.

SEMA is once again ready to help pay tuition for the future of the industry by offering scholarships to today’s brightest students attending various universities, colleges and/or vocational schools in the United States and Canada. The program has grown by leaps and bounds in the past two years.

In 2008, there were 225 applications for SEMA scholarships of $1,000–$4,000, and 93 were awarded, in addition to seven loan-forgiveness awards for a total of $133,000. In 2009, the first year of the online application and judging process, 4,300 students gave SEMA their contact information, resulting in 551 official applications from which 60 scholarships and 14 loan-forgiveness awards were given for a total of $119,000.

This year, the association instituted a SEMA scholarship page on the Facebook social networking site, and it already has more than 500 contacts. Since its inception in 1984, the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund has helped more than 400 students, culminating in more than $1,200,000 in grants. The mission of the scholarship program is to foster industry leadership by supporting the education of students pursuing careers in the automotive aftermarket.

The 2010 program will kick off in early December of 2009 and will run until April 1, 2010. While the Silent Auction at the SEMA Show has been discontinued, the buildup and auction of a scholarship project car continues to be a feature of the program. This year’s vehicle will be a one-of-a-kind 2010 Hurst Camaro that is being overseen by former SEMA Chairman of the Board Nate Shelton from B&M. When completed, the Camaro will be auctioned off at the SEMA Show in November. Proceeds from the auction will go directly to the scholarship fund.

Young Executive Network to Honor Industry Leaders at Annual Reception

SEMA NEWS-NOVEMBER 2009-MEMBER NEWS

The winner of the 2008 Young Executive of the Year Award, Tim Watts of Superlift Suspension, was the first YEN select committee member to be elected to the SEMA Board of Directors.

The annual Young Executives Network (YEN) reception will be held on Tuesday, November 4, from 5:00 p.m.–7:30 p.m. during the 2009 SEMA Show. The reception affords attendees the opportunity to network with industry leaders, including members of the SEMA Board of Directors and SEMA staff.

The YEN Reception has become a must-attend event at the SEMA Show,” said Chairman Greg Parker. “As with all YEN events, the reception will provide a great opportunity for members to network and establish valuable industry contacts.”

The recipient of the 2009 Young Executive of the Year award will be announced at the reception. The YEN Young Executive of the Year Award is presented to an individual who has had a positive impact on the industry. The recipient of the award must be a member of YEN and have demonstrated exceptional service, integrity, professional growth and business ethics throughout the last 12 months. The honoree also must have demonstrated exemplary performance and/or provided growth for his/her company or industry through his/her actions, visions and/or contributions for the present and future.

Being honored with YEN’s Young Executive of the Year award was one of the highlights of my career,” said 2008 winner Tim Watts. “The fact that the award is voted on by your peers makes it even that much more special. Becoming involved with YEN helped give me the jumpstart I needed to reach further than I ever planned. I wanted to become involved with the industry, make a positive impact and network with other like-minded people—YEN allowed me to do just that. I have no doubt that I would not be a sitting member of the SEMA Board of Directors today if I had not taken that first step of becoming involved with YEN. Don’t miss the opportunity to grow professionally and personally. Take that first step today.”

SEMA Presents $119,000 in Scholarships to Future Industry Leaders

A total of $119,000 in scholarships is being distributed to 73 students through the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund (SMSF), a SEMA-administered program to foster leadership opportunities in the specialty-equipment marketplace and to support educational goals for students.

“We’re honored to present the awards to this year’s SEMA scholarship winners,” said Tom Myroniak, SEMA vice president for marketing and market research. “The applications that came through were truly impressive and reflective of an amazing and talented group. We’re now looking forward to watching these individuals continue their educations and pursue careers in the exciting SEMA industry.”

The SMSF received 551 qualified applications on or before the deadline in April 2009. From those, 74 individuals were chosen as winners, including 14 recent graduates who applied for the loan-forgiveness program.

Introduced five years ago, the loan-forgiveness program offers individuals who have been working for SEMA-member companies for at least one year the opportunity to receive $1,000 to pay for their existing student loans. As with the scholarships, the loan-forgiveness program was developed as an incentive for students to seek employment in the automotive specialty-equipment industry upon graduation.

Also of note, 20% of the award dollars went to SEMA-member company employees or their dependents.

“Although SEMA affiliation is not a requirement of the scholarships, added consideration is given to employees and relatives of employees at SEMA-member companies,” said Myroniak. “It’s great to see SEMA members taking advantage of this benefit.”

Applications for the 2010 program will be available at www.sema.org/scholarship in December.

2010 MPMC Media Trade Conference Moves to New Location

 SEMA NEWS-NOVEMBER 2009-INDUSTRY NEWS
The annual MPMC Media Trade Conference moves to Covina, California—just 15 minutes from Ontario Airport—in 2010.
The upcoming Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council (MPMC) Media Trade Conference is moving to the recently renovated Radisson Suites Hotel in Covina, California.

Located about 15 minutes from the Ontario Airport in Southern California, the new location features easy freeway access and is near many local attractions, including the Fairplex in Pomona and the NHRA Museum. Media Trade Conference participants will also enjoy fine dining via the on-site restaurant, Hamilton Steakhouse, as well as low room rates.

“We’re looking forward to hosting a fantastic Media Trade Conference at the Radisson in Covina,” said MPMC Chairman Bill Floyd of RideTech. “This annual event has become an essential activity for hundreds of media representatives and for our council members. The convenience of the hotel—along with the amenities and low rates—will ensure that the event continues to be a great success and will allow us to accomplish even more than ever before.”

The MPMC Media Trade Conference is a three-day event where manufacturers and media take part in pre-scheduled, private, sit-down meetings. Nowhere else can a manufacturer meet with editorial staffs from so many news outlets, and nowhere else can the media gather so much technical and new-product information at one time.

Here are additional details about the 2010 MPMC Media Trade Conference, scheduled for Tuesday–Thursday, January 19–21, 2010. Media registration for the event is available here.
