Meet the Mongoose: GM Teases All-New HD Diesel Engine

GM dropped a teaser for the highly anticipated, all-new Duramax 8.3L Turbo-Diesel V8 that will be the heart of the refreshed '27 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. Watch the teaser above.

GM's Small-Block V8 Enters Its Next Generation

GM Small Block v8 assembly line

Two new V8 engines--which will help power GM's next-generation light-duty pickup portfolio in the '27 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500--are designed to provide full-size pickup truck customers with increased capability and performance from GM's sixth-generation Small Block architecture.

The new L76 5.7L and L78 6.6L V8 engines bring GM's next-generation small-block architecture to its light-duty truck lineup, joining the LS6 6.7L V8 developed for the '27 Corvette Stingray, Grand Sport and Grand Sport X. As with the LS6, which brought the 409ci displacement back to the small block engine family, the L76 and L78 herald the return of the 350ci and 400ci displacements, respectively. The new engines were developed with advanced modeling and simulation tool sets, plus proven hardware efficiency and durability testing, enabling small-block V8s to continue to meet regulations and exceed customer expectations, according to GM.

The layout of the new engines begins with an architectural element shared with more than 100 million small-block engines dating back to 1955: cylinder bore centers spaced at 4.40-in. intervals.

To generate more horsepower and torque from the new light-duty truck V8s, GM shared several new key enablers:

  • Increased displacement from 5.3L and 6.2L to 5.7L (350 ci) and 6.6L (400 ci), respectively, by increasing piston stroke 6 mm.
  • Higher compression ratio for more efficient combustion.
  • More airflow via larger throttle diameters.
  • New intake manifolds with tuned runners to manage the additional airflow.

The 5.7L V8 delivers 402 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque. No other truck in the segment tows more than GM's light-duty trucks, and the Silverado 1500 achieves a best-in-class maximum available tow rating of 13,700 lbs. when properly equipped.

The 6.6L V8 is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine in its class, with 481 hp and 501 lb.-ft. of torque.

"These new V8 engines advance GM's legendary small-block architecture with greater capability, more advanced technology and the strength of GM's manufacturing footprint behind them," said Tom Bishop, chief engineer for small block engines at GM. "They're engineered to provide truck customers the confidence and performance they expect from a GM V8."

Additional, significant sixth-generation features include:

  • A dual-fuel system that combines direct injection and port fuel injection for expanded operation in optimal power, efficiency and emissions windows.
  • New lubrication system featuring a continuously variable oil pump, on-engine oil cooler and reworked oil feed locations for additional oil pressure consistency.

By the time the next-generation trucks arrive at dealerships later this year, GM development teams expect to complete more than 1.5 million miles of real-world, on-road validation.

Tamed-Down Neue Klasse Design for Facelift of BMW 5-Series Touring

The BMW M5 Touring prototype.

The next major update for the BMW 5-Series is taking shape, and the wagon-bodied prototype in these pictures surprises with its more restrained approach to the Bavarian automaker's Neue Klasse design language. Also tamer compared to earlier test vehicles, the long roof in question reinforces a growing theme surrounding BMW's upcoming mid-cycle refreshes.

Internal combustion models adopt Neue Klasse stylistic elements without being turned into twins of the Neue Klasse model range. Previous development vehicles previewing the facelifted 5-Series hinted at a more dramatic transformation, leading us to believe that BMW is planning an extensive visual makeover.

More recent prototypes, including this wagon, indicate moderation. The overall silhouette remains unmistakably G61, and the bodysides are hardly different from the outgoing iteration. Where mid-cycle upgrades become apparent is at the front of the midsize estate, with slimmer lighting units and a flatter kidney grille.

BMW 5 Series Touring

Better integrated than before, the revised lights and grille also give the impression of width. While it may be thoroughly camouflaged, the rear end tells a similar story. What is visible beyond the camouflage indicates revised graphics and a cleaner overall presentation, with the rear bumper also benefiting from better surfacing than before.

Whereas the exterior changes appear evolutionary, the cabin is undergoing transformative changes directly influenced by the Neue Klasse-based i3 and iX3. Just like the latest generation of the X5, which uses a heavily updated CLAR platform instead of Neue Klasse underpinnings, the steering wheel-framed instrument cluster will be replaced by Panoramic Vision. Specifically, a dark strip that runs pillar-to-pillar along the base of the windshield, this futuristic setup is designed to project driving information, sat-nav prompts and customizable widgets in the driver's line of sight.

BMW 5 Series Touring

A larger central touchscreen with iDrive X complements Panoramic Vision with integrated touch and haptic feedback, along with advanced voice control for good measure. As for the bad news, Operating System X and Panoramic Vision will result in the elimination of the iDrive rotary controller on the center console.

An optional front passenger screen is likely coming as well, plus new steering wheel designs featuring touch surfaces with haptic feedback. Additional tech-forward changes are expected in the form of more advanced semi-autonomous driving aids. Under the skin, anticipated improvements would be the Adaptive Chassis Control system, combining two-axle adaptive air suspension and continuously variable dampers, and recalibrated integral steering.

In the case of the i5, look forward to sixth-generation eDrive technology, including more efficient drive units and cylindrical battery cells. Preliminary information suggests that BMW intends to start 5-Series Touring facelift production at some point in July 2027, making it a '28 model.

As ever, prospective customers will be presented with a variety of mild- and plug-in hybrid powertrain options, including an electrified V8 for the M5 Touring.

Trying to Beat Porsche on the 'Ring: the Denza Z9 GT Xtreme

Denza Z9 GT

Already one of the most outrageous shooting brakes out there, the Denza Z9 GT will soon be lapping the German Nürburgring racetrack faster than any series-production shooting brake. Spotted testing without camo, this prototype is a dedicated high-performance variant that BYD is believed to market as the Xtreme. The Denza brand has not officially confirmed that nameplate, though.

It is not exactly sure what is hiding under the wildly dramatic bodywork. From a visual standpoint, the most obvious change is the aerodynamic package, beginning with the more aggressive front bumper with enlarged intakes.

Denza Z9 GT

An extended front splitter is also present, as are deeply sculpted skirts and large aerodynamic extensions around the lower body. All in all, the motorsport-oriented stance is uncanny. Sitting on dark multi-spoke wheels mounted with high-performance rubber, the Z9 GT Xtreme in these pictures also rocks a huge wing.

The swan-neck-style rear wing stretches across much of the vehicle's width, ending in large endplates. Underneath it lies a significantly enlarged aerodynamic diffuser and wheel-arch-integrated ducting that further distinguishes the Xtreme from the punchiest Z9 GT on sale to date. Equipped with a roll cage, this prototype could very well generate close to 2,000-plus hp from a tri-motor setup. If that proves right, the Z9 GT Xtreme would best everything in the segment, including the Manthey Kit-equipped Porsche Taycan Turbo GT.

Denza Z9 GT

While it's clear that BYD is targeting a new lap record, it remains to be seen by how much the '27 Denza Z9 GT Xtreme outperforms the corner-carving rival from Germany. The visible hardware makes the prototype vehicle's purpose hard to misunderstand, with Denza going for a lot more in-your-face aero upgrades than Porsche and Manthey did with the Taycan.

In standard trim, the 230-kW front electric motor of the Z9 GT joins dual 310-kW rear motors to produce a combined 850 kW, resulting in either 1,156 metric or 1,140 mechanical hp. Its peak torque is also incredible, and the 0-62 mph acceleration is hypercar-level impressive.

Translating sheer straight-line acceleration into Nürburgring dominance requires exceptional chassis and suspension componentry, as well as rear-axle steering and clever torque-vectoring logic. Most likely, the Xtreme is also equipped with dual-chamber air suspension as part of the DiSus-A intelligent body control system.

SEMA Data Excellence Award

SEMA Data, the automotive aftermarket industry's largest product data repository, has honored 88 brands with SEMA Data Excellence Awards, marking the highest number of honorees in the program's history.

Each year, the SEMA Data Excellence Awards Program recognizes brands that go above and beyond to provide retailers and resellers with the complete, accurate and timely product information they need to sell with confidence. The awards are based on each company's SEMA Data Scorecard, which recognizes manufacturers across Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers, with Gold and Platinum denoting Data Excellence.

"Great product data turns a part number into a product that can be found, understood, and sold," said SEMA Vice President of Technology, Data and Strategic Initiatives Gigi Ho. "We are proud to honor the brands that are doing the work to provide resellers with the accurate, comprehensive information they need to power their systems, point of sale and eCommerce stores."

Last year, SEMA Data raised the bar for Data Excellence by significantly updating its Data Scorecard. Requirements across all award levels were strengthened to better reflect what resellers need to successfully onboard, merchandise and sell products across today's distribution and eCommerce channels.

Bronze establishes the foundational data needed to set up and identify products. Silver builds on that foundation with richer information to support selling and distribution. Gold requires 100% completion of key product data fields, while Platinum recognizes brands that meet additional qualitative standards for the quality and usability of their content.

Maintaining high-quality product data requires ongoing attention and continuous improvement. Manufacturers work closely with the SEMA Data team to identify errors, fill content gaps and enhance the overall quality of their data.

One company that exemplifies this commitment at the Platinum level is Eibach, whose data management efforts are led by Business Analytics Specialist Jared Reyes.

"Product data is the foundation behind everything we do," said Reyes. "It doesn't matter how good your product is if you can't get the information to your customers in a usable format. While product data may not be the glamorous side of the business, it creates a foundation for long-term consistency and makes you look at your brand from a new perspective. The initial feedback from customers has been positive, and we are seeing an increase in downloads each week."

This year more than half of SEMA Data Excellence honorees achieved Platinum status, a milestone worth celebrating.

"High-quality product data is becoming part of how brands operate every day, not simply something they work toward for an award," Ho said. "Ultimately, that means better data flowing throughout the industry to the retailers, resellers, and consumers who rely on it."

Award winners will be celebrated during the SEMA Data Users Meetup on Monday afternoon, November 2, the day before the official start of the 2026 SEMA Show. To learn more about SEMA Data, visit www.semadata.org.

From the SEMA Washington, D.C., office

Jay Leno holding a bill signed by Gavin Newsom.

In a historic moment for California's automotive heritage and enthusiasts, Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Leno's Law (Senate Bill 1392) at the garage owned by the bill's namesake, entertainer and noted automotive enthusiast Jay Leno. The bill signing delivers significant, much-needed reform to smog check requirements to appropriately balance environmental stewardship with cultural reverence.

The bill was sponsored by Leno and SEMA.

Gov. Newsom was joined at the signing ceremony by Leno, SEMA CEO Mike Spagnola, SEMA Chair Melanie White, Senior Manager State Government Affairs Victor Muñoz, Senator Dave Cortese, and advocates who participated in the effort to preserve California's automotive heritage, including Francine Mata, co-founder and president of the Sacramento Lowrider Commission and a founding member of the California Lowrider Alliance, and Carmen Vera, co-owner of acclaimed restoration shop Pasadena Classic Car.

Leno's Law, authored by Sen. Cortese with principal co-author Sen. Shannon Grove, creates a narrow, phased-in pathway to exemptions from California's smog-check requirements for qualifying collector vehicles manufactured between 1976 and 1985. Leno's Law was crafted to provide a carefully limited solution for vehicles typically preserved for shows, parades, charitable functions and historical exhibitions, rather than vehicles used for everyday transportation.

The signing of Leno's Law into law.

The collaborative and fruitful effort to pass Leno's Law united Democrats and Republicans and mobilized a diverse set of stakeholders, including lowrider groups and car clubs, collectors, preservationists, automotive businesses and enthusiasts.

"SEMA applauds Governor Newsom for putting his signature on a historic win for California’s automotive community and for every family, enthusiast, and small business working to keep this culture alive," said Spagnola. "Leno's Law shows that California can protect clean air while also showing the appropriate reverence for the vehicles that connect generations and tell an important part of our state's story. We are grateful to Senators Cortese and Grove, Jay Leno, our member companies and the thousands of advocates whose energy fueled this effort with an unrelenting passion for our shared automotive heritage."

Background on Leno's Law

Leno's Law establishes a narrow, phased-in, collector-only pathway to a smog-check exemption for certain older vehicles. Under the bill, beginning January 1, 2028, qualifying collector vehicles (manufactured before model year 1981) would be exempt from smog-check requirements. The exemption would annually expand by one model year until 2033, when it would apply to vehicles manufactured before model year 1986. To qualify, vehicles must meet the bill's collector-use requirements, and owners must either carry collector-car insurance or, via a future DMV process to be established by 2030, verify that the vehicle is driven fewer than 1,000 miles per year. The bill does not change California's existing exemption for pre-'76 vehicles.

The effort to pass this bill gained support from California's automotive community and international enthusiasts. California's lowrider groups sent more than 1,700 letters, and FIA's International Historical Commission endorsed it, praising its balance of preservation and environmental goals.

California is widely recognized as a key cultural hub for America's automotive history, instantly identifiable through countless images of classic cars and trucks cruising across its roads––from desert to coast and the urban landscapes in between. Appropriately, the state is home to more than 1,500 SEMA member businesses, and its automotive aftermarket sector sustains nearly 150,000 jobs. It annually generates more than $40 billion in economic activity, provides $13 billion in wages and benefits and contributes $6 billion in taxes.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed SEMA-sponsored SB 1069 into law, establishing a new conditional approval pathway designed to help qualifying aftermarket emissions-related products reach the California market faster.

Authored by Senator Tim Grayson (D-Concord), the new law marks the culmination of a multi-year effort by SEMA and California lawmakers to create a new pathway for manufacturers that invest in emissions testing and compliance.

  • SB 1069 will allow qualifying manufacturers that submit complete CARB Executive Order applications, supported by required emissions testing and technical documentation, to receive conditional approval to sell, advertise, and install covered products while CARB completes its final review.

"SB 1069 is an important win for our industry, giving manufacturers that have invested in emissions testing and compliance a meaningful new pathway to bring qualifying products to market faster in California," said SEMA CEO Mike Spagnola. "This law will help innovative products reach consumers sooner, give small businesses greater certainty to invest and grow, and help American companies remain competitive. We thank Senator Grayson for his leadership, Governor Newsom for signing this legislation, and CARB for its willingness to work collaboratively with SEMA throughout this process."

"California's automotive aftermarket is an important part of our economy, and SB 1069 gives businesses that follow the rules and invest in compliance a clearer path forward. This law recognizes the work manufacturers put into meeting California’s emissions requirements while giving them greater certainty as they plan new products and investments," said Senator Grayson. "I'm proud to have authored this legislation and appreciate the work of SEMA, CARB, my colleagues in the Legislature, and Governor Newsom and his team in helping bring it across the finish line."

About SB 1069

Emissions-related automotive aftermarket products generally require a CARB EO before they can be legally sold, advertised or installed in California. Obtaining an EO requires manufacturers to invest in emissions testing, engineering and technical documentation demonstrating that their products meet California's applicable emissions standards.

Under SB 1069, manufacturers that submit a complete EO application supported by the required testing and technical documentation may receive conditional approval to sell, advertise and install qualifying products while CARB completes its final review.

The pathway is designed to help compliant products reach California consumers sooner without changing the emissions standards manufacturers must meet or CARB's authority to ultimately approve or deny an EO.

What Happens Next With SB 1069

SB 1069 takes effect January 1, 2027. CARB will then implement the conditional approval program by July 1, 2028.

SEMA will continue working with CARB and the aftermarket industry as the program is developed and implemented.

Background on SB 1069

For decades, SEMA has helped aftermarket manufacturers navigate California's emissions requirements and lawfully bring products to market.

The SEMA Garage provides manufacturers with emissions testing, engineering expertise, and compliance assistance, and over the past eight years, has assisted with approximately 50% of all aftermarket EOs issued by CARB and completed more than 800 EO applications on behalf of member companies.

Of the 7,000 automotive aftermarket businesses nationwide that SEMA represents, more than 1,200 are California manufacturers, distributors and retailers. California’s specialty automotive aftermarket generates $40.44 billion in economic output, supports more than 149,000 jobs, delivers $13.47 billion in wages and benefits and pays $6.16 billion in state and local taxes.

  • The automotive aftermarket is predominantly comprised of small businesses that continually invest in new products, technology, engineering, and compliance. SB 1069 will help qualifying manufacturers bring compliant products to California customers sooner.

SEMA has a lengthy track record of supporting emissions compliance at the federal level and in California. This includes more than $30 million invested in emissions compliance through the SEMA Garage program, including Emissions Compliance Centers in Diamond Bar, California, and Plymouth, Michigan.
