MDCP Award
SEMA has received a 2020 Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) award, which will allow SEMA to further assist companies, such as Injen, to increase export sales.

SEMA was presented a 2020 Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) award, which will allow SEMA to expand its programs to assist its member manufacturers in exporting products to growing international markets.

The award marks the third time SEMA has received an MDCP grant. Presented by the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA), the MDCP award includes financial and technical assistance to help U.S. companies compete in international markets. SEMA has used and plans to continue using the award to introduce several new initiatives that address trade barriers hindering American specialty-equipment companies’ ability to sell overseas.

“International sales provide SEMA members and the automotive specialty-equipment market with valuable opportunities to grow and expand their sales,” said Linda Spencer, SEMA senior director of international and government affairs. “Having the financial and technical support of the International Trade Administration will significantly aid in providing the industry with the programs and services that will allow them to be successful. We’re excited to be able to utilize the grant and introduce new, meaningful programs.”

The Commerce Department presented awards to 10 nonprofit industry trade groups to create or sustain U.S. jobs by increasing or maintaining the export of American goods.

“Through these partnerships with non-profit industry trade groups, the MDCP awardees are able to address trade barriers, enhance industry competitiveness and generate exports that create and sustain American jobs,” said Deputy Under Secretary for International Trade, Performing the non-exclusive functions and duties of the Under Secretary for International Trade Joseph Semsar.

The public-private partnership with the ITA has made it possible for U.S. manufacturers to participate in SEMA-sponsored overseas trade missions to promising markets, including the United Arab Emirates, Australia and China. To date, participating U.S. firms from 38 states have reported export sales of more than $160 million.

The $300,000 grant, along with funds from SEMA, will be used to address the growing problem of counterfeit automotive customizing products, and to continue ongoing efforts to seek pro-industry regulations abroad that allow U.S. products equal market access. Industry groups pledge to pay a minimum of two-thirds of the project cost and to sustain the project after the MDCP award period ends.

Doug Kalitta and Tommy Johnson Jr. Pick Up Key Victories at MOPAR Express Lane NHRA Midwest Nationals Presented by Pennzoil

Veteran Doug Kalitta won for the fourth time in St. Louis and pulled within two points of the Top Fuel lead last Sunday, racing to a victory at the ninth annual Mopar Express Lane NHRA Midwest Nationals presented by Pennzoil at World Wide Technology Raceway. Tommy Johnson (Funny Car) also won at the eighth race of the 2020 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season. Due to a unique combination of cold temperatures and wind direction, NHRA officials postponed the conclusion of racing in Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle on Sunday. The two classes will be completed at an upcoming event. The race was also highlighted by the announcement that Camping World has partnered with NHRA to become the sponsor of the premier professional series, which will be known as the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series.

Kalitta earned his second win this season and 49th in his standout career after going 3.690 seconds at 322.58 mph in his 11,000-hp Mac Tools dragster, beating defending world champ Steve Torrence in the final round. It closed the gap between Kalitta and Torrence, who has won two straight world titles, to just two points, setting the stage for a memorable championship battle.

In Funny Car, Johnson picked up a crucial victory to stay in championship contention, going 3.884 at 326.88 in his 11,000-hp MD Anderson Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat in the final round to squeak past Matt Hagan’s 3.886 at 333.00. Hagan jumped past him by advancing to the final round, but Johnson now trails by just 34 points.

In Pro Stock, action was stopped midway through the second round, with Greg Anderson and Matt Hartford both picking up wins. Anderson ran a Sunday-best 6.502 at 211.53 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro in his second-round victory. Erica Enders was set to race Chris McGaha when the call was made to postpone the rest of racing action in the class. Aaron Stanfield and points leader Jason Line were slated to race as well. That winner will meet Hartford and Anderson will race the winner of Enders-McGaha.

Pro Stock Motorcycle completed its second round of eliminations before action was halted on Sunday. Points leader Matt Smith, who won the most recent race in Gainesville, went an eliminations-best 6.767 at 199.49 on his DENSO Auto Parts/Stockseth Racing EBR to move into the semifinals. Joining him was Steve Johnson, teammate and U.S. Nationals winner Scotty Pollacheck and reigning world champ Andrew Hines. Smith and Johnson will square off in the semifinals, while Pollacheck and Hines will race for a spot in the final round. Action in the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Series was also postponed due to the cold temperatures and wind direction. There were no elimination runs made in the class on Sunday.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues October 14-18, with the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals at Texas Motorplex in Dallas.

AASA Technology Conference Virtual Fundraising Effort Nets More Than $4,000 for Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation

As the AASA Technology Conference (ATC) concluded its virtual conference last week, and the Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation (AACF) was the beneficiary of a $4,175 gift from participants, thanks to some creative thinking by ATC organizers and “Loonie-Toonie” game sponsors Pricedex Software. The game is a variation of “heads and tails,” and requires participants to ante up to participate. To celebrate the heritage of Pricedex Software's roots in Canada, Canadian “Toonies” (a $2 coin) are tossed and participants stay alive by guessing the outcome of each toss until only one participant remains. This year, participants made online donations to the AACF as their ante to play the game.

“The ATC Conference is the premier technology conference in the aftermarket, and the Foundation is humbled to be the recipient of their generosity each year,” said Jon Owens, chair of AACF's Revenue Growth Committee. “The ‘Loonie-Toonie’ game is becoming renowned throughout the industry as a fun, light-hearted way to do something really good for the aftermarket family. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to Pricedex Software for sponsoring and conducting this great event, and the creative way in which they teamed with AASA to execute it this year. Just awesome!"

The AACF has been uniquely challenged this year as they have traditionally relied on more face-to-face, activity-based fundraisers. Given the circumstances of the global pandemic, AACF has had to adjust and get creative in order to sustain their fundraising efforts. To that end, the Foundation has partnered with TopGolf—a recreational golf simulation facility to host the AACF Top Contender National Championship. For more information on how you can participate in this nationwide event, go to www.aacfi.org and click on the “TopGolf Fundraiser” link.

Recaro
Recaro Automotive has announced the grand opening of its new North American facility, Recaro Automotive HQ.

Recaro Automotive Seating Opens New North American Facility

Recaro Automotive has announced the grand opening of its new North American facility, Recaro Automotive HQ. Located in Clinton Township, Michigan, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility took place October 6. Earlier this year, Recaro Automotive was acquired by Raven Acquisitions LLC. The new automotive facility will be responsible for OEM, commercial vehicle and aftermarket seats. Additionally, international shipments of seating materials and products will be processed through this specific plant moving forward. Recaro’s most recent product launch, the brand’s first-ever off-road seats, will soon begin production at Recaro Automotive HQ. These seats, known as the Pro Racer SPG XL ORV and the Cross Sportster ORV, will come to market by the end of 2020 for customer purchase. To support these endeavors, the Recaro Automotive HQ will create job opportunities for workers within the Detroit area.

Recaro worked hand-in-hand with community leaders throughout the site selection and construction process. The official ribbon cutting, which featured a speech by Emil Kreycik and a product display, was attended by Bob Cannon, Clinton Township supervisor, and Jack Johns, project manager at Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development. Moving forward, private and socially-distanced tours of the facility will be available by appointment for OEM customers and Recaro’s marketing partners.

Following the acquisition of Recaro Automotive Seating by Raven Acquisitions LLC, the company continues to focus on its core business—performance seats and ergonomic seats, as well as special applications. This new structure allows for shorter and faster decision-making processes with greater flexibility to better meet the requirements of the market, aftermarket, commercial and OEM customers.

Corvette

Here’s another prototype for the upcoming Corvette C8 Z06.

The prototype spotted features a staggered wheel/tire configuration, with the rear tires being particularly wide. Compared to a “regular” Stingray, the eighth-gen Z06 has a wider stance. There's camo covering what is imagined to be carbon-fiber wheels. Also, note that this prototype is missing the center-exit dual exhaust (which was caught on an earlier C8 Z06 prototype), which makes us wonder if GM may have scrapped the idea, or if this just an older prototype.

The high-pitched revs produced by the car were very distinct and are like nothing else ever seen from the Corvette lineup throughout its history. It’s expected that a high-revving DOHC 5.5L V8 is under the hood, based around the racing motor introduced in the C8.R last year.
