Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase is a leading destination for SEMA Show buyers and media to learn what’s new and to make contacts for future business.

One of the primary reasons that buyers and media attend the SEMA Show is to learn what’s new and to make contacts for future business. Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase, is a leading destination on both counts. Newly located at the east end of upper South Hall, Ideas Alive is a 25,000-sq.-ft. flurry of activity from 8:00 a.m. to the close of the hall every day of the Show featuring the best of the best and the newest of the new.

The New Products feature area is so popular that SEMA has developed an additional opportunity for any exhibitor regardless of whether their product is "new" this year. Now a company can simply submit any product that is indicative of the kind of work the company does. This new area, dubbed "Featured Products," is located adjacent to the New Products Showcase in Ideas Alive.

Electronic scanners are provided to make it easy for buyers and media to capture your company's product information and have it conveniently e-mailed to them or printed right there at the Show.

Exhibitors may enter products in either area, though, only the first entry is free. Additional entries are only $75 per product category if received by October 7; after that, the fee is $150 per product category. Entries submitted on site will be accepted based on space availability.

New Product and/or Featured Product entries can be submitted online. For Featured Products, simply select "Featured Product" as the category.

All new products will also be included in SEMA's annual New Products Awards competition recognizing the advancement and innovation of the industry's latest offerings. Awards from each category are presented at the very popular New Products Breakfast, to be held Tuesday, November 1, from 7:30 a.m.–8:45 a.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton.

While Featured Products are not eligible for judging, they still benefit from concentrated buyer and media attention creating a terrific opportunity to promote your company in the highly trafficked Ideas Alive section of the Show.

Mike "Junior" Johnson accepts the Solo Driver of Eminence Award.

SCCA Solo Drivers Earn Prestigious Awards
Some of the Sports Car Club of America’s (SCCA) top awards for solo competition were presented last week at the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska, including the Solo Cup, Driver of Eminence and the Johnson Spirit of the Sport Awards. On the course, nine drivers earned the Triad Award and saw its first winner of the McClintock Berry Cup for young drivers.

Each year, the Solo Events Board selects a recipient for the Solo Cup Award from nominations made by the membership at large. The award goes to the SCCA member who has made outstanding contributions to the Solo Events Program. Jeff Jacobs, from Philadelphia, was given the award and joined a list of winners dating back to 1978. Jacobs was the 2010 ProSolo H Stock Champion and finished 11th in the class at this year’s Solo National Championship.

The Solo Driver of Eminence Award goes to the solo driver who has consistently demonstrated excellence behind the wheel and an exemplary degree of sportsmanship, dedication and unselfishness. This year, Mike “Junior” Johnson, from Glen Allen, Virginia, was recognized as the winner. Johnson finished second in A Street Prepared, with his co-driver, Courtney Cormier, taking the class win.

The Johnson Spirit of the Sport award has been awarded to the SCCA Solo Community member that brings the spirit of fun to their fellow members. The honor is symbolized by the message engraved on the perpetual award that reads “Johnson Spirit of the Sport Award, presented annually by the Royal Order of the Sheep to a member of the flock that upholds the spirited virtues of fun, comaradarie and tomfoolery.” The award is named in honor of the inaugural recipient Roger E. Johnson, and is selected annually by the previous three recipients. This year, the award went to the “Atlanta Brotherhood,” a group of soloists based in the Atlanta area.

On the track, 32 drivers entered then Solo National Championship event eligible for the Solo Triad award—the highest award a solo competitor can earn. The Triad recognizes those drivers that win championships at three levels of National Solo competition: a Divisional Championship, States Championship National Tour and National Championship, all in the same class.

Nine of the eligible drivers claimed the Triad Award by winning a National Championship.

Two drivers became repeat winners of the award. Mark Madarash, from Red Oak, Texas, earned his second Triad Award (following one in 2009) in E Street Prepared after winning a Southwest Divisional and Southern States Championship in a Pontiac Trans-Am. Bartek Borowski, of Elmwood Park, Illinois, earned the honor in E Stock for the second-straight year after winning the Central Divisional, Southern States and Northern States Championship events in a Mazda Miata.

Earning their first Triad Awards with National Championships during the week were Doug Rowse (Phoenix, D Street Prepared); Geoff Clark (Monroe, Washington, Street Touring Ultra); David White (Chicopee, Massachusetts, Street Modified); Andy McKee (San Jose, California, Super Street Modified); Fred Zust (Tempe, Arizona, X Prepared); Donald Elzinga (Waterford, Michigan, C Modified); and Jeff Kiesel (Poway, California, E Modified).

The McClintock Berry Cup goes to drivers in the Formula Junior program that, while not eligible for a National Championship because the classes run have “supplemental” status, still complete Divisional and States Championships wins and a win at the National Championship event. Tom Regganie, from Joliet, Illinois, captured the McClintock Berry Cup this season with a win in the Central and Great Lakes Divisions, the Northern States Championship, and in Lincoln, all in Formula Junior B.

The Dr. Bob Woods Cup was also awarded to the top finishing student driver in the Formula SAE competition. Trent Strunk, a University of Kansas student from Silver Lake, Kansas, earned the award after finishing second in the class.

More information on the Tire Rack SCCA National Championships or the SCCA Solo program is available at www.scca.com/solo.

JaguarRSR Heads to California After its Best Qualifying of the Season
JaguarRSR is preparing for a six-hour endurance event at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Round Eight of the 2011 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrόn.

Two weeks ago, the sophomore team was on the East Coast racing on the streets of Baltimore where it achieved its best qualifying efforts of the season, where the Jaguar XKR qualified in the 7th and 9th positions. This weekend, they head to California to return to road-course racing.

The team will field two XKRs in the 39-car ALMS field—the Series' largest at the track since the first event in 1999. This will be the third start for the XKR at this venue, making its first appearance back in 2009.

Moran considers Laguna Seca his home track, as he was born in Pasadena, California, and currently resides with his family in Ladera Ranch, California. He essentially began his racing career on the 2.238-mile course. From competition in the Jim Russell Mazda series to Barber Dodge and then Atlantics, he recorded multiple fast laps, podiums and front-row starts, including a victory in Atlantics. Jones is also no stranger to this venue, having won the pole and race while competing in the IMSA GTP Championship and multiple starts in the Champ Car World Series.

Bruno Junqueira and Ken Wilden join forces again in the cockpit of the #99 cat. The Brazilian Junqueira has made four starts there in Champ Car, earning consecutive second-place finishes during his last two visits. The JaguarRSR lineup is complete with Canadian Wilden, who has made seven starts at Laguna. He has a vast experience of machines on the challenging course ranging from open-wheel (Atlantics), Trans-Am, Grand-Am (Prototype and GS class). He has been on the pole twice and won as many times.

The vehicles featured in the Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Builder's Challenge during July's SEMA Pinewood Drag Races will soon be made available for auction through ebay. Proceeds raised through the auction will benefit Childhelp and the Victory Junction Camp. But before these carefully crafted masters of the metal dragstrip find new homes, SEMA eNews talked to builders Keith Kaucher and Brent Vandervort to uncover their motivation for making these pinewood cars special.

All of the vehicles featured in the Builder's Challenge will be on display in the HRIA booth at the 2011 SEMA Show. New builders and their vehicles will be included each week in SEMA eNews. Featured this week are Keith Kaucher of Kaucher Kustoms and Brent Vandervort of Fatman Fabrications.

Keith Kaucher, Chief Designer, Kaucher Kustoms

SEMA eNews: Why did you decide to get involved and become a HRIA Pinewood Builder’s Challenge participant?

Keith Kaucher: I saw it as an opportunity for some much-needed exposure and a way to help out the kids while doing it—a win-win situation.

SEMA eNews: Did you race Pinewood when you were younger?

Keith Kaucher: No, I never did. I did, however, build more than 100 car model kits since I was nine years old.

SEMA eNews: What was the inspiration for your build?

Keith Kaucher: The custom Show Rods by Barris, Roth, Jefferies, Cushenberry, Starbird and Winfield from the mid to late ’60s.

SEMA eNews:
What was the major challenge in completing the build?

Keith Kaucher: For me it was getting the track specifications so I knew exactly what I needed to do to make my car clear everything and still have a great ride height.

SEMA eNews:
What are the details of the build that you would like potential bidders to know?

Keith Kaucher:
That it's an original concept designed by award-winning, custom-car designer Keith Kaucher of Kaucher Kustoms.

Here is a video of Kaucher's build from beginning to end.

SEMA eNews: Why did you decide to get involved and become a HRIA Pinewood Builder’s Challenge participant?

Brent VanDervort: For the most excellent cause and for the fun and honor of being involved.

SEMA eNews: Did you race Pinewood when you were younger?

Brent VanDervort: No, but I helped some friends as an adult.

SEMA eNews: What was the inspiration for your build?

Brent VanDervort: I have a drawing done years ago for a ’40 Ford Tudor converted to a mid-engine, fenderless, topless Phaeton. I thought this was a good chance to try out the proportions.

SEMA eNews: What was the major challenge in completing the build?

Brent VanDervort: Filling the grain in the wood.

SEMA eNews: What are the details of the build that you would like potential bidders to know?

Brent VanDervort: I built it kind of old school [pinewood]. I marvel at the exotic creations and appreciate the effort. As in all things competitive, it can get a little over complex, so I went old school. I hope my effort wasn’t perceived as being less intensive than it could have been.

All of the HRIA Builder's Challenge vehicles will be on display in HRIA's council booth at the 2011 SEMA Show. More details on the auction will be available in upcoming issues of SEMA eNews. For more information, contact Zane Clark at zanec@sema.org.
