“We’re excited to bring David Ragan to the 2011 SEMA Show,” said Kristin DeBates, corporate marketing manager for the UPS automotive segment. “It’s the premier show for auto enthusiasts, with an audience that appreciates the sport and logistics of racing just as much as our UPS racing team does.”

“For those involved with NASCAR, UPS trackside services is a logistics model that ensures all shipments arrive to the track on time every week and is crucial to the success of each weekend’s event,” said DeBates. “UPS takes the same commitment it applies for NASCAR and leverages it for all of our customers. U.S. Department of Commerce Grants SEMA $500,000 to Support U.S. Specialty-Equipment Exporters

The U.S. Department of Commerce named SEMA as one of the five recipients of the Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) for 2011

The U.S. Department of Commerce named SEMA as one of the five recipients of the Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) for 2011. As a result, SEMA will receive $500,000 in matching funds over the next three years to support U.S. manufacturers that export automotive specialty-equipment products to booming emerging international markets. The grant is intended to stimulate U.S. exports of specialty-equipment products as part of the Administration’s National Export Initiative, which aims to double U.S. exports by 2014 in support of several million U.S. jobs.

“SEMA is pleased to partner with the Commerce Department to expand the association’s initiatives bringing together U.S. manufacturers with distributors and retailers in the fastest-growing markets in the world,” said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting. “The fact that SEMA has been selected for an MDCP award from the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) reinforces the value of our growing Business Development Conference program and provides financial support to members seeking to participate in this and other association export initiatives.”

SEMA was selected from among nearly 50 applicants based on a number of factors, including export success, performance measurement, partnership potential with the DOC’s International Trade Administration (ITA) and compatibility with ITA priorities, creativity, institutional capacity and program sustainability following the grant period.

WD-40 Co. is partnering with hot-rod designer and TV star Chip Foose to design and manage the build of this year’s WD-40/SEMA Cares project vehicle.

After raising nearly $300,000 for children’s charities with its two previous charity vehicle builds, WD-40 Co. is partnering with hot-rod designer and TV star Chip Foose to design and manage the build of this year’s WD-40/SEMA Cares project vehicle.

The vehicle, to be unveiled at the 2011 SEMA Show, will appear at select West Coast auto-related events and will then be auctioned through the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, on January 21, 2012. Proceeds from the vehicle sale will go to the Childhelp and Victory Junction children’s charities.

“You’ve seen the Camaro and the Mustang with those beautiful WD-40 brand colors, and this year we’re going to build something that will turn even more heads,” Foose said. “I can’t wait to build it, drive it and then auction it off for a great cause at Barrett-Jackson.”

A semi-automatic, leverless tire changer specifically designed for industry professionals will be auctioned off on eBay Motors, with proceeds benefiting SEMA Cares.
A TECO tire changer that’s ideal for difficult wheel and tire fitments will be auctioned off on eBay Motors, with the proceeds benefiting SEMA Cares.

This is the third consecutive year that WD-40 Co. has partnered with SEMA Cares—SEMA’s charity arm—to build a custom vehicle for charity. Foose is partnering with a number of automotive aftermarket and technology companies, which will donate parts, equipment and services to give the vehicle exceptional performance and a distinctive Foose design.

“We really want to build off of the success of the last two years, and partnering with someone like Chip, who’s the best in the business and has used our product all his life, was a great way to do that,” said Tim Lesmeister, vice president of marketing at WD-40 Co.

Bid on a High-End Tire Changer

A semi-automatic, leverless tire changer specifically designed for industry professionals will be auctioned off on eBay Motors, with proceeds benefiting SEMA Cares. The tire changer, a TireWorks 28 TOP by TECO, handles oversized and heavy car and van wheels from 11 in. to 27 in. and is ideal for doing difficult wheel and tire fitments, such as low profiles, run-flats and expensive cosmetic wheels. SEMA Show attendees can view a demonstration of the machine in the TECO booth (#42294, South Hall, lower level).

The SEMA Board of Directors established SEMA Cares in 2007 to bring the voice and resources of the SEMA community together to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Funds are currently being raised to support Childhelp and the Victory Junction children’s charities

SEMA HERITAGE

Showmanship, Circa 1971

By Drew Hardin
Photo Courtesy Source Interlink Media Archives

How do you get your share of attention at the SEMA Show when foot traffic is shoulder-to-shoulder thick? Some gimmicks these days have gotten pretty outrageous but—as you can see in this photo from the 1971 Show—SEMA showmanship is a decades-long tradition.

Petersen Publishing Company photographer Pat Brollier was walking the aisles at the Anaheim Convention Center during pre-Show setup and just couldn’t resist this sight. If the lovely model didn’t catch your eye, and you missed Uncle Sam ’cause he’s way up there on his stilts, Al Unser’s Indy 500-winning Parnelli Jones Colt would surely draw you into the US Wheels booth.

When Brollier took this photo in January 1971, the SEMA Show was just a few years beyond its humble beginnings under the Dodger Stadium bleachers. Yet it was growing quickly, with hundreds of vendors and thousands of buyers, jobbers, media and other attendees turning out for this edition.

In 1972, it would be held for the first time alongside the APAA show; and not long after, in 1977, the SEMA Show would grow to the point that it needed a much bigger venue: Las Vegas.

Representative Don Manzullo Cruises Into Hopperstad Customs

HRIA Select Committee Member Hosts Congressional District Site Visit in Illinois
By Dan Sadowski

Representative Don Manzullo (third from left) joined a large group of his constituents at Hopperstad Customs in Belvidere, Illinois. The business is owned by Kerry Hopperstad (fifth from left). Also attending the event were SEMA Congressional Affairs Manager Dan Sadowski (left), Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council Select Committee member and Holley Performance Products Regional Sales Manager John Sonnefeldt (ninth from right) and the Congressman’s brother, Frank Manzullo (second from left).

Don Manzullo (third from left) joined a large group of his constituents at Hopperstad Customs in Belvidere, Illinois
The Congressional District Site Visit at Hopperstad Customs became an impromptu car show and cruise, as several local automotive enthusiasts drove their collector cars to the event.

Don Manzullo (third from left) joined a large group of his constituents at Hopperstad Customs in Belvidere, Illinois Hopperstad Customs owner Kerry Hopperstad explained to Representative Don Manzullo (left) how he builds and customizes each vehicle in his shop.

Each August, members of Congress spend the month in their districts meeting select businesses and organizations to learn more about how policies crafted in Washington directly affect homegrown industries. These events can help provide solutions to issues specific to local congressional districts and businesses while helping to establish long-term working relationships between SEMA members and their elected officials. At one such event, SEMA members and enthusiasts gathered at Hopperstad Customs in Belvidere, Illinois, to tour the facility and talk about cars and the economy with their federal representative. Their special guest, Representative Don Manzullo, is a lifelong car enthusiast from Rockford in northern Illinois and now represents these local communities in the U.S. Congress.

Owned and operated by Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Select Committee member Kerry Hopperstad, Hopperstad Customs has been serving the custom car and hot-rod community since 1968. It specializes in louvers, rear suspension setups, front axle conversions, disc brake conversions, chassis restoration, body reconstruction, interior/dashboard fabrication, electrical wiring, powerplant buildup and custom concept car building.

“Having worked on projects with his brother Frank, including his ’32 Ford, I was happy to have Representative Manzullo visit my shop,” Kerry Hopperstad said. “Our area is well known for having many automotive businesses and hobbyists, and I am pleased that Manzullo took time to visit with fellow car buffs to discuss the important issues. Hosting the event at my shop provided a great backdrop for the Congressman to talk cars and policy in a setting he was familiar with. This Congressional Site Visit event was beneficial for everyone involved.”

Representative Manzullo, a Republican, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992. Representative Manzullo serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee. From 2001–2006, he was chairman of the House Committee on Small Business and currently serves as founder and co-chairman of the House Manufacturing Caucus, a leading voice in urging the United States to develop a more comprehensive policy to support its domestic manufacturing base.

Representative Manzullo’s visit to Hopperstad Customs was a natural fit. He is a founding member of the SEMA-supported Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus, which recognizes contributions made by the specialty parts and motorsports industries to the U.S. economy. Representative Manzullo is a classic car enthusiast who knows firsthand the issues facing the industry. He also has a family connection: His brother, Frank, who attended the event at Hopperstad, played a role in helping enact SEMA’s model street rod/custom vehicle bill into law in Illinois in 2002 as a member of Rockford’s Unique Street Rod Club.

During his visit, Representative Manzullo discussed custom car construction and the economic outlook for the specialty-equipment industry. Hopperstad provided a comprehensive overview of the process by which he obtains classic car frames and creates one-of-a kind collector automobiles tailored to the needs of individual enthusiasts.

Illinois has a strong tradition of hot-rod and classic car enthusiasts, and
several local hobbyists attended the event as well, driving their classics to Hopperstad’s shop. Representative Manzullo spent a good part of his visit asking questions and learning more about each collector vehicle, many of which had been fabricated at Hopperstad Customs or other local shops.

After the shop tour, Representative Manzullo convened a roundtable discussion about current issues facing small businesses and the challenges for small manufacturers.

Representative Don Manzullo, a collector car enthusiast himself, got behind the wheel of one of Kerry Hopperstad’s (left) custom builds at his shop in Belvidere, Illinois.

“Throughout my time representing the 16th District of Illinois, I have been a staunch supporter and promoter of American manufacturing,” Representative Manzullo said. “I commend Hopperstad Customs for their part in the vibrant manufacturing community in northern Illinois, and I am proud to represent them. The recently introduced Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2011, of which I am an original co-sponsor, will alleviate some of the regulatory burdens placed on Hopperstad and other custom automobile shops by establishing a program through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that will address the unique safety and financial issues associated with limited-production custom vehicle manufacturers. This bill would resource several hundred jobs back to the United States if enacted.”

Local SEMA members and enthusiasts in attendance had an opportunity to ask Representative Manzullo questions about current events and plans for congressional action for the remainder of the year. Manzullo said that he remains committed to advocating on behalf of small businesses in his district and throughout the nation while promoting domestic manufacturing. The visit provided a unique opportunity for both SEMA members and industry enthusiasts to meet with their federal representative.

The Congressional District Site Visit Program is overseen by SEMA’s government affairs office in Washington, D.C. The program pairs SEMA-member companies with their member of Congress for facility tours and business roundtables in their home districts. These visits provide an opportunity for SEMA members to meet face-to-face with their Washington representatives or senators and discuss issues impacting the company and its workers. They help establish working relationships that can eventually translate into legislative successes in Washington.

If you are interested in hosting an event at your facility with your federal elected officials, please e-mail Congressional Affairs Manager Dan Sadowski at dans@sema.org or call 202/783-6007 x19.

Hot-Rod Builders Race for the Children

Finely Crafted Builder’s Cars to Be Auctioned for Charity

By Chad Simon

The custom-designed pinewood cars featured in the Builder’s Challenge, which is part of the annual Pinewood Drag Races sponsored by the Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA), will be autographed by the builders and displayed at the 2011 SEMA Show’s HRIA booth. The drags were held in conjunction with SEMA’s Leadership Days, July 29, at the Renaissance Hotel in Long Beach, California.

After the SEMA Show, 13 custom pinewood cars will be up for auction via eBay, and the proceeds will go to the children’s charities Childhelp and Victory Junction Camp.

Participating builders included industry luminaries Art Morrison, Fatman Fabrications, Fesler Concepts, Hollywood Hot Rods, Hopperstad Customs, Johnny’s Auto Trim, Kaucher Kustoms, No Joke Upholstery, Rich Evans Designs, Santini Paint & Body, Spanky’s Hot Rods, Spitzer Concepts and Street Vizions.

The HRIA Builder’s Challenge cars were crafted by an incredible class of hot-rod builders, but in the end Derek White of Street Vizions successfully defended his title, winning the series of races for the second consecutive year. Rich Evans Designs was the runner up.

“All the guys at the shop had a great time building the pinewood derby car for the Builder’s Challenge,” White said.

“When John Menzler from COMP Cams and Eric Saltrick from Steele Rubber Products asked us to compete two years ago, we never thought we would win, but to win two years in a row really surprised us. It’s for a great cause, and we hope to keep doing it. All of the other competitors are great…I guess we’ll have to watch out for Rich Evans next year, since he has been the closest to us so far.”

Each pinewood derby builder was given four months to complete the car, with no design limitations or rules imposed except that the car had to fit the track’s dimensions and no propulsion systems were allowed.

Saltrick, an HRIA member, has been involved in the Pinewood Drag Races since its inception in 2008 and coordinated the hot-rod builder event. The race came to fruition at the 2009 SEMA Show, when Saltrick, fellow HRIA member Menzler and HRIA Chairman Rick Love of Vintage Air decided to walk the Show floor and ask every well-known hot-rod builder to participate.

“They all jumped at the opportunity,” Saltrick said. “We wanted to get the hot-rod community involved, and we have many hot-rod builders lined up to do it again next year. We’ve also got young builders involved to help give them some exposure.”

The 2011 HRIA Builder’s Challenge was a huge hit, according to Love.

“The creativity and craftsmanship on these cars is truly amazing, and the racing this year was closer than ever,” he said. “Plan to come by and see them up close at the SEMA Show. HRIA will again work with eBay to auction these one-of-a-kind creations to benefit the children of Victory Junction Camp and Childhelp. Both of these charities do a tremendous job, and this program is another example of HRIA’s membership really stepping up to support our youth and these worthwhile organizations.” The eBay auction will take place November 1–10. Simply search “HRIA Pinewood” on eBay for your chance to own a custom hot rod from a legendary builder.

Dodge CUV Mule

At first glance of these photos from the photographers at Brenda Priddy & Co., this might appear to be a mule for the upcoming Dodge compact—often referred to as the Dodge Hornet. However, Priddy's team says that this is actually an early developmental mule for an all-new Fiat-based CUV.

Sitting higher and with much larger wheel arches than the “compact” mules, this CUV mule confirms earlier reports in Automotive News about Dodge replacing both the Grand Caravan and Avenger with a CUV, according to Priddy & Co., and these photos indicate that it will be based on a Fiat platform.

From all reports, Priddy expects the new CUV to arrive sometime in 2013, likely as a ’14 model.

SEMA has received word of the October 20 passing of Dick Van Cleve at the West Los Angeles Veteran's Administration Hospital after a long illness. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday, surrounded by family, approximately two weeks prior.

Van Cleve served as the association's vice president of marketing in the late ’80s, and was inducted into the SEMA Hall of Fame in 1996. He was also a devoted SEMA and Performance Warehouse Association (PWA) volunteer and was instrumental in the success of the SEMA Golf Tournament as a fundraising event for the SEMA Scholarship Foundation.

In addition to Van Cleve's dedication to these industry associations, he was owner of Van Cleve & Associates, a marketing and advertising firm based in Valley Village, California. Earlier in his career, Van Cleve was lauded as a top advertising representative for Car Craft magazine, and eventually became publisher of its parent, Hot Rod magazine.

Van Cleve is survived by his children John (wife, Julie), Karen (husband, Kenny DeMartines) and Craig; and granddaughters Jessika Simo (husband, Matt), Andrea Cohen (husband, Tony), Megan Van Cleve and Tara Maynard; as well as great grandchildren Sage, Jewel and Violet Cohen. He was preceded in death by his son Mark and granddaughter Stacie Van Cleve.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, November 19, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 10800 Moorpark St., North Hollywood, CA 91602, 818-766-3838. Honoring his wishes, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations in his name be made to the parish's St. Charles Altar Servers Program.
