Northwood University announced that it will launch the first MBA program designed to address the parallel business challenges and emerging opportunities facing automotive dealership and aftermarket manufacturing and distribution professionals in January 2011.

Offered through Northwood University's DeVos School on Management, the DeVos MBA for automotive professionals, according to the school, is designed to meet the career demands of tomorrow's industry leaders. The 24-month MBA capitalizes on the best of distance and on-site learning environments. While much of the relevant course-related information can be effectively conveyed online, honing the knowledge into powerful strategic skills requires face-to-face exposure with seasoned professors and fellow student-executives from within the vehicle retail and aftermarket segments. The program will feature six four-day on-site sessions at Northwood University's campuses in Midland, Michigan, and West Palm Beach, Florida, as well as convenient travel "hubs" across the United States.

"Economic challenges, globalization and changing consumer behavior are affecting virtually every automotive business, whether a vehicle retailer or aftermarket parts distributor. Students will examine these market forces in an entirely new way and we will challenge participants to identify, discuss and apply innovative strategies that extend beyond traditional competitive boundaries," said Dr. Tim Nash, vice president, strategic and corporate alliances, Northwood University.

For more information regarding the DeVos MBA for automotive professionals, visit www.northwood.edu/graduate or call Matthew Bennett, director of admissions, DeVos Graduate School of Management, at 800/622-9000.

The seminars represent a wide range of topics that are targeted to appeal to nearly every type of shop in the market.

Below are a few select courses you’ll find in the RDE lineup at the 2010 SEMA Show:

Successful Body Shop Management for the 21st Century
Presenter: Frank Terlep, CEO, Summit Software and Mobile Solutions Inc.
Friday, November 5, 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m.

Attendees will learn about and discuss new business processes, technologies, performance measurements and LPIs required to operate a successful collision-repair business in the 21st century. The session will introduce repairers to 21st-century estimating, parts, production, financial, customer service and communications processes, technologies and performance measurements designed to help find or save thousands of dollars per month in sales, revenue opportunities and cash-flow improvements.

Participants will also learn how to cut unnecessary costs and expenses while improving cycle time, quality and customer satisfaction. Anyone who has attended Frank Terlep’s past presentations will tell you that this is a can't-miss seminar.

"This seminar will be the beginning of a new era in the collision industry, and you better get ready for the ride." –Johnny K., Glacier Collision, Alberta, Canada

"I have gone to and paid for many seminars, but this was one of the finest workshops I have ever attended. Frank's enthusiasm and knowledge made it one of the best ever." –Tony Lofrano, F. Lofrano and Son, San Francisco, California

Waterborne: How to Stay Afloat (panel discussion)
Guy Bargnes, vice president, sales/marketing, Painters Supply & Equipment Co.
Thursday, November 4, 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

This panel discussion will feature four to five shops that have converted their repair facility to waterborne and will explore the dynamics of their individual experiences. The moderated discussion will explore the challenges and benefits of their research, implementation of the product into their operation and will offer businesses considering the switch to a water-based paint department a firsthand look at what to expect in the process.

Panelists will share how they successfully made the switch; warn of pitfalls; and offer advice for shops looking to make a successful conversion. The panel will also feature a Q&A session with the seminar attendees to address specific concerns from shops interested in a better understanding of the process.

"Support throughout the waterborne conversion process is critical,” Bargnes says. “In this session, we’ll hear from shop owners who have successfully converted to waterborne products and explore the various support elements, including help from local jobbers, that made the change successful. Beyond compliance requirements, there are a variety of factors that a shop owner may want to consider in making the change to waterborne products. Our panelists will address their motivations for considering a change and discuss their rationale and strategies for implementing successful conversions."
