The 2012 Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Reception will include a live auction to support SEMA Cares and increase awareness for the third-annual HRIA Pinewood Builder’s Challenge. Fifteen well-known builders created
one-of-a-kind miniature hot rods in the style of Pinewood derby cars.
The cars were raced at the annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Races in Pomona,
California. These cars will be on display at the annual SEMA Show
and then 12 will be placed on eBay for auction from October 30–November
8, and three will be auctioned live. All proceeds from the auction will
go to support SEMA Cares and its two children’s charities—Childhelp and
Victory Junction.
We caught up with Josh Henning of Goolsby Customs.
Describe the inspirations behind the design of your pinewood car.
Our inspiration came from the old drag racers, such as Tony Nancy, Tommy Ivo and Don Garlits, and their wild paint jobs and overall look. These guys had style and helped transform fast cars into cool cars!
Describe some of the materials and resources you used to build your car.
We tried to build this Pinewood much like a kid in the ’60s would have (if they had access to a cool painter). The body was made from the wood out of the kit, then the other parts were just built from whatever else we could find. Sometimes it's good to leave all the modern niceties behind and get back to the ways they used to have to do it.
Why is it important for you to participate in the Pinewood Challenge?
The Pinewood challenge is important because of the huge honor of being recognized with all these great builders who are working together for charity. And come on, whose arm do you really have to twist to get someone to play with a toy car?
