Alexis DeJoria raced to her first career Funny Car victory Sunday at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. “When we won the finals, I couldn’t believe it," said DeJoria, daughter of famed entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria and wife of noted television personality Jesse James. "Actually, I can because I know we can do it, but it’s such a shock at the same time. It’s surreal. It’s really amazing. I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep."
The last time the Pros of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series hit the throttle on their Top Fuel Dragsters, Funny Cars and Pro Stock race cars in the state of Arizona was last February at the former Firebird International Raceway.
Khalid alBalooshi, (top Fuel), John Force (Funny Car) and Jason Line (Pro Stock) started the 2014 season with victories at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals—the opening race of the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season. All three racers overcame tough fields in their respective categories to start the year on a high note.
Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. has signed a multiyear agreement to be the Official Car of NHRA, beginning with the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.
Pro Stock veteran Greg Stanfield and Jeff Isbell, a former national event winner in Top Alcohol Dragster, will team up for the 2014 season in the Pro Stock ranks. Stanfield will drive the Chevy Camaro Pro Stock entry owned by Isbell and built by Jerry Haas.
IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE AT WILD HORSE PASS MOTORSPORTS PARK: Massive facility upgrades continue at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park located outside of Phoenix, for the upcoming CARQUEST NHRA Nationals, February 21–23. Seven hundred feet of concrete have been poured in the launch pad; new CompuLink timing, new public-address systems and new scoreboards will be installed prior to the event. Clay Millican received the holiday gift he was hoping for when he finalized a multiyear partnership with Parts Plus on Christmas Eve. The start of the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season will mark a new era in Millican’s career as he will collaborate with Dexter Tuttle and Tuttle Motorsports. The Parts Plus sponsorship will provide funding for Millican and the team for several years, giving Tuttle the security that comes with a multiyear contract.
PEGASUS RACE TRAILERS NAMED OFFICIAL TRAILER OF NHRA: Pegasus Race Trailers—a manufacturer of custom-built race trailers—has been named the official trailer of the NHRA. Beginning in 2014 in the multiyear agreement, Pegasus Race Trailers will provide the NHRA with a state-of-the-art, purpose-built trailer to be utilized at all 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events across the country. POPULAR FORMER FUNNY CAR DRIVER GORDIE BONIN DIES: Former NHRA national event-winning Funny Car driver "240 Gordie" Bonin, the world championship runner-up in 1977, died November 29. He was 65. Bonin earned his famous nickname in the ’70s when his Bobble Up Trans Am was a steady performer in the 240-mph zone. Bonin had nine NHRA national event wins in his career and for six years served as NHRA's director of marketing services. Read more on this story.
