It’s no secret that specialty-equipment sales declined in 2008 as a result of our economy taking a turn for the worse during the latter half of last year. Despite this market contraction, 37% of SEMA members recently surveyed noted that their company’s sales actually increased in 2008 over 2007.
HE’S BACK: IndyCar Series driver Helio Castroneves was acquitted on five of the six charges facing him in his highly-publicized tax evasion case. The sixth charge (conspiracy) ended in a hung jury. Thus Castroneves was back in a Team Penske Indy car at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. He finished seventh. Dario Franchitti claimed the victory.
While hobbyists and related businesses have worked diligently to defeat proposals in Washington, DC to create a national cash for clunkers program, a bill (H.B. 1207) has been introduced in the North Carolina State Legislature that would implement a state vehicle scrappage program for passenger vehicles that are at least 14-years old.

eBay Motors has paved the way for charitable giving by signing on as presenting sponsor of the second annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Race, which will be held from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on August 1, 2009, in Pasadena, California.

Suzuki is providing SEMA members exhibiting at the 2009 SEMA Show with an opportunity to build a Kizashi 3 project vehicle. As one of the newest models planned to join Suzuki’s lineup, the Concept Kizashi 3 sport sedan debuted at last year’s New York International Auto Show.
The automaker is generating additional interest in this launch through the specialty-equipment industry by providing pre-production versions of the vehicle to companies for one year to create and promote accessories.
Suzuki has plans to launch the sport sedan at the end of 2009 as a 2010 model.
