The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved hydrofluoroolefin (HFO-1234yf) as an acceptable substitute chemical for chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants. The chemical is intended to replace R-134a since it is believed to have far less global-warming potential.
