SBN Allyship

In today's workplace, diversity cannot be imposed but must be nurtured and encouraged to create lasting change. To help automotive professionals lay the groundwork for a more diverse future workforce, specifically in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, the SEMA Businesswomen's Network (SBN) will host a webinar on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. PDT/3:00 p.m. EDT.

The "STEM Allyship: Empowering the Future Workforce" session will explore various barriers that hinder access to STEM-based careers, including socioeconomic challenges, geographical limitations and persistent stereotypes. Attendees will hear from industry experts as they offer insights into how individuals and organizations can address these barriers and highlight existing educational opportunities that promote diversity in STEM.

Key takeaways include how to:

  • Address industry skill gaps and develop and attract diverse STEM talent.
  • Promote innovation and foster creativity through diverse teams.
  • Build a sustainable talent pipeline and engage future generations in automotive careers.
  • Tackle recruitment barriers and overcome socioeconomic and geographical challenges.
  • Stay competitive and up-to-date with technological advancements and market changes.

Panelists include Dean Case, membership director at Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) SoCal/consultant at Motivo; Kira Daczko, regional admissions director at Universal Technical Institute (UTI); and Tamara Robertson, engineer at Electronic Instrumentation and Technology (EIT), "Mythbusters" host and STEM ambassador for the Jessi Combs Foundation and Society of Women Engineers. Rachel Speir, marketing specialist at RS Marqueting, will moderate the discussion.

Jay Leno and SEMA CEO Mike Spagnola advocating for Leno's Law

Industry advocate Jay Leno, left, and SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola, right, gave testimony in a Senate committee hearing earlier this year, stressing the importance of passing SB 712 and how it ensures future generations will have a way into car culture--without unnecessary barriers.

Last week, California's Assembly Appropriations Committee held Leno's Law (SB 712), preventing it from moving forward in 2025. While this decision is disappointing, it does not mark the end of the road for this law. In fact, it signals the beginning of a new chapter in our fight to protect and preserve California's automotive heritage.

But first, some context. This year, Leno's Law made historic strides. It passed the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support and cleared the Assembly Transportation Committee unanimously. These milestones represent the most significant progress on this issue in more than two decades. For the first time in 20 years, lawmakers across the political spectrum acknowledged the need for thoughtful reform to California's smog check program--one that respects both environmental goals and the passion of car enthusiasts.

Leno's Law, named after legendary car enthusiast Jay Leno, would have created a new smog check exemption for vehicles insured as collector cars and displaying California Historical Vehicle license plates, provided they were between model years '76 and '86. These provisions were designed to ensure responsible use and enforcement, targeting vehicles that are rarely driven, meticulously maintained, and owned for their historical and enthusiast value, which is a reflection of California's deep-rooted car culture.

In response to the recent Leno's Law news, SEMA says: "We're disappointed that Leno's Law (SB 712) was held in committee, but proud of the momentum it created," said SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola. "This was the most progress on smog check reform in over 20 years. Thanks to the passion of enthusiasts, builders and small businesses, lawmakers seriously considered expanding California's exemption for the first time since 2004. The bill wasn't perfect, but it was a meaningful step forward. We're grateful to Senator Shannon Grove, Senator Dave Cortese and Jay Leno for their leadership. We'll be back to finish what we started."

What's Next for Leno's Law

Though SB 712 will not move forward this calendar year, its journey has galvanized support across the state and laid the groundwork for future success. The movement is growing, and the foundation laid this year is stronger than ever. SEMA remains committed to working with lawmakers, regulators and the community to craft a solution that honors California's legacy as the heart of car culture.

SEMA thanks its members, industry partners and the enthusiast community for their tireless advocacy. Your voices were heard loud and clear in Sacramento, and they will continue to resonate as we prepare for 2026. Thank you for standing with us. The fight isn't over, and together, we'll keep the pedal down.

Spy photographers have once again caught an upcoming vehicle undergoing testing, giving an early glimpse at what's to come before its official debut.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS Facelift Includes Mild Turbo
Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Porsche is developing an updated 911 GT3 RS, according to new images snapped at the German Nürburgring, which will include updates under the hood.

For the first time ever, the GT3 RS will receive a turbocharged 4.0-L six-cylinder engine, dubbed a "mild-turbo" by Porsche, insiders said. With the extra boost, the GT3 RS will likely exceed the current output of 525 hp and propel the sports car to zero to 60 mph in less than three seconds.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The front fascia of this tester is identical to the current production model, indicating that Porsche is not yet ready to start testing the tweaked front bumper and headlights that the car will likely receive. However, there are some visible changes to the rear, including new air outlets in the corners of the rear bumper and new taillights.

Additionally, some alterations have been made to the diffuser, likely aimed at improving efficiency while also making the sports car look more aggressive than ever before, along with larger exhaust pipes.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The interior of the updated 911 GT3 RS has not yet been snapped but it is understood that the broader facelifted 992 range will switch to an all-digital instrument cluster, meaning the GT3 and its RS stablemate should too. Other than that, a few other alterations are expected, insiders said, although there could be some minor changes to the trim options available to customers.

Volkswagen Golf R350 to Put Emphasis on Power
Golf R350

The turbocharged 2.0-L, four-cylinder engine that powers the Volkswagen Golf R could gain some extra muscle in 2026, as a new version—rumored to be named the Golf R 350 after its supposed 350-hp output—has been spotted testing at the Nürburgring.

Golf R350

The prototype has an emphasis on cooling, sporting a vented hood, enlarged radiator and revised front bumper. Lightweight wheels with R-branded calipers, along with the familiar quad exhaust and roof spoiler, round out the package. Behind the wheel during testing was German racer Benjamin Leuchter, who piloted a Golf GTI TCR in 2017 and won his class at the Nürburgring 24 Hours that year.

Golf R350

Beyond added power, the Golf R 350 is expected to feature chassis upgrades, weight-saving measures and revised steering and transmission calibration. Production plans have yet to be announced, sources said.

Swan Song for the Audi RS3 GT
Audi RS3 GT

In 2011, Audi unveiled a variant of the A3: the RS3 Sportback. Derived from the S3 Sportback, it was powered by a distinctive 2.5-L TFSI five-cylinder engine, a design long championed by the Ingolstadt, Germany, brand. However, stricter emissions regulations are putting an end to the iconic motor.

Before the power plant is phased out, Audi Sport was recently caught testing the RS3 GT at the Nürburgring. The prototype was seen sporting aggressive aerodynamic add-ons like canards on the front bumper, a revised splitter and a roof-mounted spoiler, as well as carbon fiber components to help trim weight.

Audi RS3 GT

The car was riding on bold new wheels that showcase sizeable rotors and blue brake calipers, hinting at upgraded stopping power. Expect sharper steering and likely a revised suspension setup as well, insiders said, especially if engineers have unlocked more output from the engine.

The most powerful RS3 to date delivers 401 hp, but the upcoming GT is expected to raise the bar even higher, possibly exceeding 416 hp to outgun rivals like the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S.

Kody Campbell

The SEMA Future Leaders Network (FLN) has named Kody Campbell, director of purchasing at Suncoast Converters Inc., as the network's newest spotlight member.

Get to know Campbell in his interview with SEMA News below.

SEMA News: What is the best advice you have ever received?

Kody Campbell: All you can do is try. It has driven me to learn more and sometimes forces me to think outside the box. Trying has driven me to gain knowledge and has provided accomplishments in itself.

SN: What keeps you in the industry?

KC: The diversity the industry provides. You have everything from OE manufacturers to companies that just focus on doing one part and do it well! I have met people from all walks of life in this industry.

SN: Where can you be found on a Saturday?

KC: In my driveway, washing my car to get it ready to cruise down the beach. Then, aimlessly wandering our beautiful white sand beaches!

SN: How do you prepare for an important meeting?

KC: By writing everything out, not just cliff notes. Meetings are 90% prep work and 10% execution. If you aren't versed in the subject matter, you cannot articulate your point effectively. I go through a lot of pen ink and notebooks.

SN: If you could go to lunch with one industry leader, living or dead, who would it be?

KC: I think I would have to say Akio Toyoda. The man has to be a gold mine of knowledge as he was the president of Toyota for 15 or so years. Toyota's manufacturing processes have always intrigued me, especially being one of the more prevalent companies operating on 'just in time' inventory. Add on top of that, he raced for Lexus under an alias!

Fill out an FLN member spotlight form to be eligible to be featured on FLN's social media, SEMA News and FLN member updates.
