Automotive personalization continues to soar throughout the world as industry experts identify nearly 250 specialty-equipment products from the 2008 SEMA Show as winners of a SEMA Global Media Award.

The SEMA Global Media Awards Program, which marked its fifth consecutive year, is a unique program which consists of a prestigious group of international journalists serving as judges. In 2008, the program included 47 judges from 22 countries. Each judge carefully reviewed and evaluated the more than 2,000 new product entries at the SEMA Show before selecting the products that they felt would resonate and appeal most to consumers in their home countries. 

“The idea of customization and personalization has been growing throughout world,” said Linda Spencer, SEMA director of international and government relations. “This is particularly true in the automotive industry. Given the innovation that comes from this market and the increasing number of products that are now available, it’s easy to understand why there would be so much interest in vehicle modification.”

Spencer noted that different products seem to resonate in different countries depending on the automotive market, demographics and lifestyle factors in those parts of the world. The Global Media Awards Program was designed to help manufacturers learn about new market opportunities and identify the products that may have mass appeal to international consumers.

"Our goal is to have media experts from around the world determine which new products are likely to succeed in their home markets,” said Spencer. “The automotive specialty-equipment market is made up of enthusiasts who are passionate about the hobby, and so it’s exciting to see how their love for cars, trucks and SUVs is impacting those throughout the world."

At the recent SEMA Show, 247 new products from 184 companies were honored, ranging from performance products to high-tech mobile electronics and body parts to off-road equipment. The European Commission has proposed new tire-labeling requirements which would require manufacturers to provide consumers with a grading system measuring three tire characteristics: fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise. This information would be required to be affixed onto the tire (in the form of a sticker) and to be included in all of the manufacturer’s printed and online marketing pieces and website.

The directive, if passed, would cover  C1, C2 and C3 tires (tires fitted on passenger cars, light- and heavy-duty vehicles). The drafters of the directive are pushing for this new labeling system to allow consumers to compare tires by using a system which grades the tires on fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise emitted. 

The top ratings would be given an “A”—colored green for greatest efficiency—and run to “G,” which is color-coded red for least efficiency. The efficiency ratings will be accompanied by ratings for grip—also A to G—and noise level, indicated by decibels. This labeling system would be implemented by December 2012. 

On a related topic, both the U.S. government and the state of California are pursuing tire fuel efficiency initiatives for tires produced in quantities beyond 15,000 units. Both programs would establish a fuel efficiency rating system and initiatives to provide consumer information through the tire retailers/dealers (similar to the process by which the Uniform Tire Quality Grading information is provided).

SEMA was successful in having a “limited production tire” exemption included in both the federal and California laws authorizing the programs.  The exemption applies to tires of the same design and size which do not exceed 15,000 tires.  SEMA will pursue a similar initiative in Europe.
 
The federal program will be operated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency is expected to initiate a rulemaking procedure in 2009. The California program is under the jurisdiction the California Energy Commission and the California Integrated Waste Management Board. The law went into effect this year but officials have yet to draft an implementing regulation. 
 
The NHTSA program will not require tire marking requirements, although California officials have that option. SEMA is working with other industry associations to ensure that both programs are compatible and as user-friendly as possible for manufacturers, dealers and consumers. SEMA also reminds regulators and consumers to focus attention on other important concerns such as tire pressure, performance and handling, all of which have a direct correlation to tire fuel efficiency.

Vehicle manufacturers assembling vehicles in Europe have been urging EU officials and national government representatives to provide them relief in the form of tax breaks and grants. German officials have already agreed to cut consumer taxes on new-car purchases. For those vehicles sold between now and August 31, 2008, that don’t meet Euro 5 standards, a six-month to one-year tax break will be awarded. The tax holiday will be extended up to two years for all cars.

“Environmentally friendly” is defined as compliance with the Euro 5  (all models sold September 1, 2009 must adhere to Euro 5).

British officials are also under pressure to implement a temporary halt to that country’s vehicle Excise Duty (VED), an annual tax on the ownership of road vehicles determined by a vehicle's carbon-dioxide emissions levels. This provides for a sliding scale of liabilities ranging currently from a maximum of £400 per annum (US $598) for gas- and diesel-powered vehicles down to £35 (US $52) for the least polluting.

Alternative-fuel vehicles in this category qualify for an even lower rate. As of 2009, the rate is to increase for the cars with the largest engines. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is under pressure to cancel or delay the announced rise in the tax.  

Car manufacturers are also seeking low-interest loans from the largest national economies. France, too, is expected to come up with some support for French car companies, most likely in the form of research-development grants to the tune of €400million (US $547 million) to develop more fuel-efficient cars. The United Kingdom and Germany are also considering similar packages to coincide with any funds provided on the European-wide (European Union) level. 

Car manufacturers are seeking Euro 40 billion (US $50 billion) in low-interest loans channeled through the European Investment Bank from the leadership of the 27-nation bloc, the executive branch of the EU. The European Commission is expected to complete their proposal by December 1, with low-interest loans, dispensed over three to four years, to finance car manufacturers' research and development of new fuel-efficient products.

All car companies with manufacturing operations in Europe would be eligible for the funding, including the European subsidiaries of General Motors, Ford and Japan's Toyota Motor Co.

The domestic and global economic crisis offered 2008 SEMA Show exhibitors and attendees at least one small benefit: it kept the "tire kickers" at home. Industry slang for those attendees not interested in buying, tire kickers decided that their efforts in previous years (including elaborate schemes to sneak into the Show) weren’t worth it this year. The result: a concentration of more qualified and interested buyers.

SEMA has taken several steps in recent years to protect the Show's purpose of connecting buyers and sellers. These include assigning "alumni numbers" to qualified attendees, and heightened screening of the application process. These and other safeguards paid dividends to the Show's more than 1,900 exhibitors.

"Going into the Show, I figured I'd be selling parts to the gang in the booth next to us," says L.J. Lobsinger Jr., national sales manager for Specialty Auto Parts USA. "We were pleasantly surprised by the turnout, and it was truly a quality-versus-quantity show, as we met with nearly every important buyer on the books."

Lobsinger also noted the general optimism of buyers and attendees, particularly a day after the general election and regardless of poor earnings reports announced by GM and Ford.

"This industry will always show resiliency. No matter what GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Tata and so on build, the aftermarket will create something to make those cars and trucks look better and go faster."

The Show also provided exceptional value to first-time exhibitors, even those off the usual specialty-equipment path.

"As a small company, this exposure gave us numerous contacts with industry vendors, current and future customers, magazine editors and other equipment and product manufacturing companies that could help us in our own manufacturing processes," says Ethan Olmstead of Greasecar Vegetable Fuel Systems, a company that produces conversion kits allowing diesel autos to run on waste vegetable oil.

"SEMA was not only the best organized and most well-attended exhibition we have attended, but also the most positive and promising for the company as well."

Despite the bailouts and belt-tightening, despite the market's dependence on discretionary income and despite the dour news of slowing auto sales, the specialty-equipment industry demonstrated its confidence and foresight.

"Attracting more than 100,000 attendees was remarkable under the circumstances of a difficult year,” said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting. “Each year the Show brings new challenges and the industry showed that it has the confidence and desire to overcome a tough stretch of road. Those who exhibited have positioned their products well for when the market comes back to full strength.”

SEMA announced the winners of the New Products Showcase Awards at the New Product Awards Breakfast held at the 2008 SEMA Show. The event serves as a kickoff just prior to the official opening of the Show, and it recognizes the most cutting-edge automotive products either on the market or about to hit the market. This year, more than 2,000 new products were submitted for consideration.

Criteria that ranked high on the judges' selection for the New Products Showcase Awards included superiority of innovation, technical achievement, quality and workmanship, consumer appeal and marketability.

During his keynote address leading up to the opening of the 2008 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Ed Peper (center), GM North America vice president of Chevrolet, announced that the company would continue its legacy of partnership and collaboration with specialty-equipment manufacturers in a SEMA Measuring Session for the all-new 2010 Camaro. Peper and his team unveiled a prelude to the possibilities in the form of a stock but stout SS along with a quartet of concept Camaros—each of which teased the edge of the envelope for performance and aesthetics.

“For 2010, the Camaro will be offered with 27 accessories, including 14 limited-production options,” Peper said.

SEMA named Patrick Judge, executive vice president of Keystone Automotive Operations Inc., Person of the Year and recognized his contributions toward enhancing the relationship between SEMA members and government legislators. Judge was presented with the award at the 2008 SEMA Show Industry Awards Banquet in Las Vegas.

Judge began his more than 37-year career in the automotive industry as a teenager working in a neighborhood auto parts store. He went on to manage a chain of retail Auto and Accessory stores, which ultimately led him to his current position at Keystone Automotive Operations.

It was Judge’s involvement in federal, state and local politics that enabled him to develop relationships with numerous individuals and organizations in Washington, D.C., that support SEMA’s legislation. Judge headed the SEMA Political Action Committee (PAC) from its inception before he was appointed by the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Court of Judicial Discipline judge. He raised more than $150,000 to assist legislators in their efforts to support SEMA issues.

Judge is currently serving his third term on the SEMA Board of Directors and serves as a member of the SEMA Retail (Education) Task Force. He is also a member of SEMA’s Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO), Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA), Light-Truck Accessory Alliance (TORA), Professional Restylers Organization (PRO), Sport Compact Council (SCC), Wheel & Tire Council (WTC) and has served on the SEMA Nominating Committee and the Jobber/Retail Task Force.

Created in 1969, the Person of the Year Award recognizes individuals for their distinguished service to the trade association and the specialty-equipment industry.

The Spagnola family receives the SEMA Chairman’s Service Award in recognition of their ongoing volunteer efforts.

SEMA Chairman Jim Cozzie presented the Spagnola family with the prestigious Chairman's Service Award during the Industry Awards Banquet during the 2008 SEMA Show. The award, given at the discretion of the chairman, was presented to the Spagnola family for their tireless work and ongoing commitment to helping others.

The Spagnola family was intimately involved in the association’s volunteer efforts with the Childhelp charity and the SEMA Gala Fundraiser. In addition to serving on the SEMA Board of Directors, Mike Spagnola is president and CEO of Street Scene Equipment and was the director of the Pinewood Drag Race held at this year’s Gala Fundraiser.

Motor State Distributing, a worldwide warehouse distributor of high-performance automotive parts, was presented with the 2008 Warehouse Distributor (WD) of the Year Award at the 2008 SEMA Show Industry Awards Banquet held in Las Vegas.

Motor State Distributing was founded in 1964 in a tiny garage by longtime racer and enthusiast George Lane. The company has since grown to become one of the most successful warehouse distributors of high-performance automotive parts in the world. In 1970, Motor State Distributing was officially founded as the warehouse distribution division of Lane Automotive, selling high-performance parts to speed shops throughout the Midwest. The company grew steadily during the next three decades and eventually expanded its customer base to include shipping to all 50 states, as well as Canada and several international accounts.

Motor State distributes millions of accessories and performance parts representing over 520 product lines from its new 153,000 sq.-ft. facility located in Watervliet, Michigan. To fulfill the needs of walk-in customers, Motor State converted 10,000 sq. ft. of its facility into a showroom dedicated to high-performance parts and accessories with personalized resources for hot-rodding advice.

Motor State’s customer base consists of jobber-owned speed shops, auto parts merchants, machine shops and chassis and engine builders. The company is recognized for providing world-class, personalized service to its jobber base and working very closely with its manufacturer reps to ensure the best programs and current product information are always available.

The WD of the Year Award, presented annually at the SEMA Show, recognizes the accomplishments and contributions to the specialty-equipment industry by one outstanding warehouse distributor each year.
