"The SEMA Show is the best place for manufacturers to promote their new products and connect with buyers,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications.

Exhibitors who want to take part in the 2009 SEMA Show priority space selection process have until May 8, 2009 to submit their exhibit space rental agreements. The deadline, which is typically in early April, was set a month later than previous years to give exhibitors additional time to plan for the Show known to many as the premier automotive accessories trade event in the world.

“The SEMA Show is the best place for manufacturers to promote their new products and connect with buyers,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications. “It very well may be the best investment manufacturers can make in terms of what they get out of it and the value they receive.”

Committed to ensuring exhibitor success at the 2009 event, organizers launched an unprecedented number of new programs and promotions, such as moving the exhibit contract deadline back one month. Other programs include increasing the number of quality buyers at the Show through outbound phone calls, negotiating rock-bottom room rates at hotels throughout Las Vegas and enhancing the electronic matchmaking program that enables buyers and sellers to connect with one another efficiently and effectively.

Manufacturers interested in learning more about exhibiting at the 2009 SEMA Show should contact ConvExx Show Management at sema-exhibit@convexx.com or 702/450-7662, ext. 120. Details about the SEMA Show and an online exhibit space rental agreement form can be found at www.SEMAShow.com.

SEMA News - May 2009

SEMA News-June 2009-Chris Kersting
The SEMA Show 2009: Accelerating Into 2010

It seems a long way off, but SEMA members are busy weighing in with plans for the SEMA Show in November. What can we expect from the 2009 SEMA Show? It’s shaping up to be a critical event at a critical time for anyone looking to do business in 2010.

We’ve witnessed the economy and businesses in all respects adjusting downward. Because the industry is the SEMA Show, the Show will reflect the industry’s changes. Meanwhile, the SEMA Show will again be the world’s leading event for connecting buyers and manufacturers, introducing new products and positioning businesses for the coming market rebound.

What’s new and different in the SEMA Show value proposition to help you accelerate into 2010? As company budgets tighten, the SEMA Show represents a highly cost-effective way for manufacturers and buyers to meet. Whether to find new business or to renew existing relationships, buyers and manufacturers aiming to succeed in 2010 will be at the SEMA Show. And, similar to last year, SEMA is launching an aggressive attendee campaign to retain the Show’s high-quality buyer participation.

New this year, SEMA is introducing an enhanced Matchmaking Program to better connect participants before, during and after the Show. Through our improved registration process for Show attendees, SEMA now collects specific product interests and other demographic data. This enables us to help connect our attendees with manufacturers before they hit the Show floor. Don’t overlook this powerful tool—it can help you find and convert leads into new business.

Pre-Show matchmaking, scheduling and other valuable planning tools are available online at www.SEMAShow.com. Coupled with the VIP buyer program, lead-retrieval systems and other programs, SEMA is offering the industry enhanced means to cost-effectively connect buyers with exhibiting manufacturers.

What else do we have to make the Show a great value? The companies participating in the SEMA Show can rely on SEMA’s expanded media partnerships, state-of-the-art media center and the media-enabled New Products Showcase to broadcast the products, feature vehicles and trends of the SEMA Show to the world. The results are measurable and spectacular. For example, right now there are millions of webpages covering the SEMA Show. Take a moment and search the term “SEMA Show” along with the name of any exhibiting company to see a quick measure of the impact of participation at the Show.

How are we helping companies manage the SEMA Show in a challenging year? This year’s deadline for exhibitors to submit the rental agreement and deposit for the booth drawing has been moved back a month to Friday, May 8. The new date allows companies flexibility and time to plan for maximum cost-effectiveness. Also, for the first time ever, exhibitors using a credit card have the option to pay only 25% down with their rental agreement. The final payment will not be due until September, which is also later than in previous years. We have secured hotel-room price reductions of 25%–40%, and we are in discussions with key vendors and hotels to reduce costs further.

SEMA recognizes that business is not “as usual” in these difficult economic times and is making sure that your participation and experience at the 2009 SEMA Show reflects these times. In addition to all of the benefits mentioned above, SEMA is continuing to work hard to ensure the Show delivers a high return on investment (ROI) as your company takes part in the coming market rebound. SEMA will once again offer webinars throughout the year that educate exhibitors on ways in which to save money and expand their ROI. Stay tuned for announcements of additional ways to participate economically for great results, and please feel free to contact SEMA’s Show department if you have any concerns, questions or suggestions regarding the upcoming 2009 SEMA Show. We are here for you.

The Return of Ultra-Light Drag Racing for a Good Cause

 SEMA News-May 2009-Industry News

Racers and onlookers crowd around the finish line in anticipation at the 2008 SEMA Pinewood Drag Race.

SEMA’s Light-Truck Accessory Alliance (TORA) has donated a new track to be used at the second annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Race, presented by eBay Motors, held from 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California.

The race, held in conjunction with the 2009 SEMA Installation Banquet & Gala Fundraiser, was established last year to raise money for children’s charities Childhelp and Victory Junction Gang Camp. Last year’s derby raised approximately $40,000 for the two charities.

The racetrack was purchased with proceeds from the vehicle exhibits displayed in the light-truck area of the 2008 SEMA Show. The racetrack will replace the two tracks used at last year’s event, which were donated to the charities.

The races will be held prior to the SEMA Installation Banquet & Gala Fundraiser, where the 2009 SEMA Hall of Fame inductees will be announced.

Mentoring

By Terry Kohl

The “Mentoring” section of SEMA News collects advice from some of the best mentoring minds in the automotive world on an array of topics of importance to the specialty-equipment industry.

Topic: How do you see the global financial challenges affecting the aftermarket?

The re-tooling of consumer attitudes toward vehicles (fuel economy, environment) combined with the entrepreneurial style of “growth in spite of ourselves” will continue to catch up with operators who don’t recognize trends and run too close to the financial edge. This will result in continued consolidation at the retail, WD and manufacturer levels and may well rewrite the basic dynamics of our businesses.
—Jon Wyly, Vice President e-Commerce and Affiliate Business, Keystone Automotive Operations

Research and development usually suffer during these periods because companies are funding other things, such as payroll, health insurance and taxes. Savvy retailers need to show how the fewest dollars can make the biggest change in existing vehicles. Now is the time to step up direct mailings, open houses and cruise nights in order to compete for our share of ever-tightening budgets.
—John Julis , J & J Marketing

International financial markets have a direct affect on our domestic stock market. Lean, efficiently run companies have the opportunity to survive when managed properly. Seeking new markets for products and services is critical to the success or failure of any provider. Get involved with trade organizations that work hard at identifying and defining emerging international markets.
—Sam Memmolo, President , SRM Marketing Services Inc.

Those companies that are heavily leveraged without access to cash and those companies that have failed to diversify their marketing will suffer the most. Everything will look ugly for a while, and then we will rebloom, with sweeter fruits for our efforts. This process will allow new ideas to prosper in a more open and healthy environment.
—Doug Dwyer, Executive Vice President, Schiefer Media Inc.

There may be some opportunities but, on the whole, consumers are holding on to their money. We’ll get through it, but be prepared for some bumpy roads ahead. On a more positive note, once the economy does pick up, there will be a whole lot of consumers with pent-up desires to modify their vehicles, so the industry should get a good shot in the arm.
—Bill Groak, Account Supervisor, Pacific Communications Group
