SEMA News—February 2011

When Petersen Publishing Company photographer Eric Rickman took this photo in October 1958, Paul Schiefer’s involvement in developing a safe, “slipper” clutch for drag racers was still a decade away. So was the honor of being the very first inductee into SEMA’s Hall of Fame, a milestone that took place in 1969. Instead, what drew Rickman down to Schiefer Manufacturing in the San Diego area on that fall day was an assignment to photograph an assortment of Schiefer’s products as part of a lengthy review of competition clutches and flywheels that Bob Pendergast was putting together for Hot Rod magazine’s April 1959 issue.

This outtake from Rickman’s shoot shows Schiefer with stacks of aluminum blanks that would be machined into flywheels. As Pendergast wrote in his story, Schiefer had developed a process he called “Albro” that bonded bronze facings onto aluminum flywheels and pressure plates, “thus arriving at a combination offering light weight and superior heat emisitivity properties, along with a lasting friction surface.”

At the time, Schiefer made aluminum flywheels priced from $52–$70 “for all popular engines,” wrote Pendergast. Schiefer had also just added clutch applications priced from $50–$60 for Chevy V8s, including the Corvette. “Corvettes are hot,” said Schiefer’s ad in that April issue, “but every Corvette and Chevrolet owner should realize that only the new Schiefer lite-weight pressure plate assembly and the exclusive bonded face flywheel will eliminate all clutch worry and flywheel blowup.”

SPC Sets Example for Effective Political Action

  SEMA News-February 2011-From the Hill-SEMA PAC
SPC Select Committee members were recognized for winning the Council Challenge at the 2010 SEMA Show (from left) James Yim, Chris Vopat, MK Sathya, Famous Rhodes, Brian Reese, Mike Lovro, Tyler Tanaka, Regis Finn, Gigi Ho, Chris Dye, Ed Burgy, Tracie Nuñez, George Ciordas and Malen Reger.

After an exciting competition late last year, the Street Performance Council (SPC) Select Committee earned the distinction of winning the 2010 SEMA Political Action Committee (PAC) Council Challenge. The contest ran between August and October, and the winner was the council Select Committee that was both 100% “PAC approved” and contributed the highest dollar amount.

The process of becoming PAC approved means filling out an authorization form required by federal law. The form allows SEMA to share information about the PAC. By filling out a form that may be accessed from the newly formatted SEMA PAC website members are only authorizing SEMA to communicate information regarding the PAC. Members are under no obligation to contribute.

To recognize the victory, SPC received $1,000 to be used toward a council activity of its choice, an acknowledgement banner displayed in the Central Hall at the 2010 SEMA Show and reserved seating and a special announcement at the SEMA Show Industry Awards Banquet. At the SPC Reception, Select Committee members were personally commended for their leadership and teamwork as PAC Chairman Doug Evans presented SPC Chairwoman Tracie Nuñez with a plaque commemorating the group’s Council Challenge success.

“I am honored to accept this award on SPC’s behalf in recognition of our commitment to SEMA PAC,” said Nuñez. “I hope this encourages fellow council leaders and all SEMA members to become involved in this important industry resource.”

Said Evans: “We are proud of all the SEMA councils that participated in this contest, which yielded significant member awareness of our efforts in Washington and additional financial contributions to our industry’s PAC. With the momentum created by the Council Challenge, SEMA PAC can continue to build and strengthen relationships with lawmakers supportive of our industry and small-business issues. With its exceptional effort, the SPC Select Committee exemplified the involvement and dedication necessary for us to thrive in this current economic and legislative environment.”

SEMA PAC allows SEMA members to pool their resources for a common political purpose. Many issues important to SEMA members are being debated in Washington—from regulatory reform to intellectual property protection and health care. Resolving these issues with a positive outcome for the industry hinges on member support. Introduced at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the WD-40/SEMA Cares Mustang was auctioned off for $100,000 at the 40th annual Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Show and Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Saturday, January 22, to benefit the Childhelp and Victory Junction Gang Camp children’s charities.

John and Jeanette Stallupi had the winning bid and will feature the vehicle in the Cars of Dreams Museum in Palm Beach, Florida.

Through the generosity of other car enthusiasts in attendance, an additional $125,000 was raised for the two charities via cash donations that will support their individual missions to change the lives of children in need.

“We’re pleased that WD-40 chose to sell the WD-40/SEMA Cares ’11 Ford Mustang custom coupe at our 40th Anniversary Scottsdale auction,” noted Craig Jackson, chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “The $100,000 sale of this custom pony car benefitted two notable charities, including Childhelp and Victory Junction Gang Camp. The car generated tremendous buzz among five bidders who each donated $10,000 on top of the $100,000 sale, including Tim Allen and Reggie Jackson, bringing the total number raised for both charities to $150,000. The sale of this car was part of the more than $4 million we were able to raise for charity during our event.”

Before being auctioned, the car was “detailed” on-site with signatures from celebrity supporters Reggie Jackson, Rick Hendrick and Tim Allen.

“We are overwhelmed and completely surprised with the results of the WD-40/SEMA Cares Mustang that was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson,” said Mike Spagnola, president of Street Scene Equipment and SEMA Board member. “In addition to the $100,000 sale, several celebrities stepped up to donate money to the auction. While the money is still coming in, we anticipate the total from the auction to exceed $200,000, which is absolutely incredible. I am eternally grateful to Craig Jackson and the staff at Barrett-Jackson for their help with the auction, as well as the management staff at WD-40.”

The ’11 Ford Mustang GT, rebuilt with high-performance aftermarket parts and a 5.0L V8 engine, produces nearly 600hp, features a custom body kit and interior, entertainment system and paint that emulates the WD-40 brand. Build partners included Street Scene Equipment, Paxton Superchargers, Stillen AP, MagnaFlow, Forgeline, Advanced Clutch Technology, Katzkin Leather, Hotchkis, Polk Audio, California Pony Car, Nitto Tire, PPG, Grant and GTR.

This is the second consecutive year WD-40 Company has partnered with SEMA Cares to build a custom vehicle for charity. Last year, the WD-40/SEMA Cares Camaro sold for $75,000 and benefited Childhelp and Victory Junction Gang Camp. A virtual version of this year’s Mustang was concurrently sold in Nitto 1320 Legends, an online racing game and social network with more than 1.5 million members, and raised $10,800 for the same charities.

“We wanted to partner with some of the best in the business to build a vehicle that helps support worthwhile causes and honors those who use WD-40,” said Tim Lesmeister, vice president of marketing for WD-40 Company. “While we’re sad to finally have to say goodbye, we’ve accomplished what we set out to do and have created many positive lasting memories in the process.”
