  Scott Luckett
Robert (Bob) Hirsch, president of the Aftermarket Foundation, has announced the appointment of Scott Luckett, MAAP, vice president of technology standards for the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), to its Board of Trustees.

Hirsch pointed out that while the Foundation's mission to take care of those in need within the industry has not changed in its 50-plus-year history, “We are heading into a new period of the Foundation’s existence, where it has become increasingly important to raise public awareness of the Foundation’s activities and the role it plays within our industry. The appointment of Scott Luckett, a lifelong participant in the aftermarket and one of its strongest public advocates, reflects that thinking.”

In addition to his duties serving as liaison to the AAIA Technology Standards Committee and industry spokesperson for electronic commerce standards, Luckett also serves as executive director of the National Catalog Managers Association and is chairman of the Aftermarket eForum Planning Committee. Luckett has also been recognized for his contribution to training and education as a 2001 recipient of the Northwood University Automotive Aftermarket Education Award and as the 2002 recipient of the University of the Aftermarket Founders’ Service Award.

Prior to his 15-year continuing involvement in the AAIA, Luckett had already accumulated more than 20 years’ aftermarket industry experience as vice president of sales and marketing for an automotive WD in Washington, D.C., and as a marketing representative for Triad Systems.

Since 1959, the Aftermarket Foundation has assisted individuals and families of the automotive aftermarket industry that have fallen on hard times due to an unexpected death, catastrophic injury, serious illness or financial hardship. Board members are called upon to assist in the fundraising efforts of the Foundation and also to assist in the identification of those in need. The Aftermarket Foundation is a volunteer organization made up of representatives from across the aftermarket industry sector and is a 501 [c] (3) charitable organization, contributions to which are tax-deductible. The SEMA Wheel & Tire Council (WTC) welcomes all wheel and tire professionals and is currently accepting new members. Along with the benefit of joining a community of industry leaders, membership in the WTC offers several distinct advantages:

Wheel Installation Guide:
The WTC has assembled guidelines for safely working with wheels and tires. Bolt-pattern and torque specs are provided in the form of a handy shop poster—a great business resource in the installation area. New members receive four copies of the guide poster.

Learning Opportunities: The WTC has developed an educational track that focuses on wheel fundamentals and sales. The courses are offered as part of the SEMA Educational Institute; these courses are open to all WTC members.

Wheel Standards:
WTC members provide input and guidance as members of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards committee, working to maintain J2530 standards as a standalone voluntary testing standard. By interacting directly with the SAE and other leading industry organizations, WTC members have a chance to advance the wheel and tire segment for the good of all.

Business Partnerships: The WTC works closely with the Tire Industry Alliance (TIA) and maintains a sitting position on the council for TIA representation.  In addition, WTC members are provided exclusive networking opportunities and work cooperatively with industry leading manufacturers, retailers, WDs and service providers in both private and public forums. These invaluable interactions will help you expand your industry contacts and gain better insight into the challenges and opportunities confronting the wheel and tire segment of the specialty-equipment industry.

The WTC is open to all SEMA members working in the wheel and tire segment. To take advantage of this opportunity to network with other industry leaders, get started through SEMA's Council & Committee webpage.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) postponed the start date for a rule requiring employers to display a poster informing workers of their right to unionize and bargain collectively. The rule is now scheduled to take effect April 30, 2012. The rule is widely opposed by business groups, including SEMA, over concerns that it unfairly promotes unionization.

The rule was scheduled to take effect last November but was delayed by the NLRB until January in order to provide more time to make private-sector employers aware of their obligation to post the notice. The rule has been delayed a second time at the request of a U.S. District Court, which is considering legal challenges to the rule. The 11x17-in. notice poster can be downloaded for free from the NLRB website

July 13, 2012, will mark the third commemoration of Collector Car Appreciation Day to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

SEMA and its Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) and Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) councils this year announced July 13, 2012, as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.” The date marks the third commemoration in what has become an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. SEMA and its councils are again working to secure a congressional resolution to recognize the day’s significance. The industry endeavors to preserve our nation’s automotive heritage while providing well-paying, high-skilled jobs nationwide. Collector Car Appreciation Day is a singular tribute to the collector car industry and the millions of hobbyists it supports.

“In the previous two years, the U.S. Senate helped launch national Collector Car Appreciation Day by passing resolutions at our request,” said SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald. “As a result, thousands of Americans have gathered at car cruises, parades and other events to celebrate our nation’s automotive heritage. By taking part in these events around the country, these automotive enthusiasts and related businesses ensured that their passion was honored and recognized.”

The previous resolutions were sponsored by Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus members Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). Senators Tester and Burr have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, and the resolution reaffirmed their understanding of the cultural importance of collector cars. The caucus is an informal, non-partisan group that pays tribute to America’s ever-growing love affair with the car and motorsports. The caucus recognizes the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation’s appreciation for the automobile’s unique place in our history.

“On July 13, 2012, collectors and enthusiasts will host hundreds of events across the country,” said Laura Bergan, ARMO chairman. “We will again proudly partner with individuals, car clubs and businesses as they organize car cruises, club gatherings and other educational events to celebrate the day.”

SEMA will maintain and publicize a list of scheduled events to commemorate America’s time-tested love affair with the automobile. Individuals, car clubs and business owners interested in publicizing events should contact Colby Martin, director of the SEMA Action Network (SAN), at 909-978-6721 or san@sema.org. If you are unable to celebrate on July 13, SEMA encourages events to be scheduled throughout the month of July.
