The conflict in Ukraine has dominated headlines over the last week, leading to volatility in the commodity and equity markets. The direct impact on the U.S. market is limited, but geopolitical concerns create uncertainty that could impact growth.

Indicators

According to the most recent “SEMA Industry Indicators” report, the spread of the virus is slowing rapidly and economic activity such as air travel and dining is coming back quickly.

Outside of the Ukraine-related uncertainty, the U.S. economy is holding up well. The spread of the virus is slowing rapidly and economic activity such as air travel and dining is coming back quickly. GDP growth should look good in the coming months.

Consumers are concerned about rising costs and the impact it may have on purchasing power. However, the Federal Reserve is expected to begin raising interest rates in March to attack inflation—although the conflict in Europe may mean they raise rates more slowly.

Attendees will learn:

  • Difficulties in converting to EV.
  • Where to start when interested in EV conversions.

Participants leave more equipped to execute a swap in various types of vehicles and learn cautionary lessons that Bream has learned over the years. WTCThe government plays a critical role in any industry. Businesses are impacted by subsidies, taxes and regulations. Elected officials often determine future laws. The wheel and tire industry is not immune to the impact of government.

From tax credits for small businesses to laws that impact the way wheel and tire products are made, distributed and marketed, and even the impact of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) overreach, the wheel and tire industry is impacted by government actions. The current RPM Act is a perfect reason for you to understand how this affects the wheel and tire industry.

SEMA Wheel & Tire Council (WTC) members are invited to learn how they can work with elected officials to help their businesses, and why it’s important to fight for the passage of the RPM Act now during a live webinar, March 17, at 12:00 p.m. (PDT).

Dan Ingber, SEMA vice president of SEMA government and legal affairs, and John Hotchkis, president at Hotchkis Performance and SEMA Political Action Committee (PAC) chair, will explain:

  • What the SEMA PAC is.
  • How the SEMA PAC helps to ensure that elected officials support our industry.
  • What the new SEMA Individual Membership is, and how it helps defend your automotive rights.
  • The importance of bills such as the RPM Act, and why it matters to wheel and tire companies.

While you’re busy managing your business, SEMA’s government affairs office in Washington, D.C., is advocating to protect the industry and your business. This webinar will guide you on state and federal regulations, and the opportunity to make your voice heard on relevant issues that may affect your business.

Held regularly at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the HRIA Builders Panel Education Session took place in 2021, both entertaining and educating attendees about how to thrive as a hot-rod builder. As with all 2021 SEMA Show seminars, a recording of the seminar “Hot Rod Builders Drive the Vintage Segment, Powered by HRIA” is now available at www.semashow.com/education.

Education

The HRIA Builders Panel Education Session that took place at the 2021 SEMA Show both entertained and educated attendees about how to thrive as a hot-rod builder.

The one-hour program features SEMA Hall of Fame member Rick Love as moderator, with an impressive lineup of award-winning builders: Bobby Alloway, Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop; Jonathan Goolsby, Goolsby Customs; Tim Strange, Strange Motion; Will Posey, Big Oak Garage; and Brian Brennan, author, In the Garage Media.

Viewers will hear the panel’s best-kept secrets and advice for running a successful hot-rod business, what they wish they would have known at the beginning of their careers and how they built a successful brand over the years.

“It’s the people in the industry, and that’s what you have to connect with,” says Brennan. “As a builder or a shop owner, you have to be able to connect with that person [your client]. Some are nice, some are not so nice, but you have to decide ‘what can I work with and what I can’t’ because if you’re not true to yourself or your brand, you’re going to screw up big time. Hone those communication skills you have.”

Pros and cons of taking a build to car shows, finding and keeping quality employees and utilizing renderings when project planning was also discussed.

The seminar recording is one of many available at www.semashow.com/education. New recordings are added weekly. Other recently added seminars include:

  • “DSP Fundamentals: Leverage the Power of DSP to Deliver Great-Sounding Car Audio Systems”
  • “Black Ink: Cashflow Management Secrets Your Accountant Never Shared”
  • “EV and the Accessorization Game, Powered by PRO”
  • “Synthetic Fuels: Paving the Way for the Future of ICEs? Powered by ETTN”

Visit www.semashow.com/education to view and access the entire collection.

VW

This is the upcoming, ’22 VW Amarok undergoing testing in metro Detroit. The new Amarok will represent the second generation of the nameplate and will be based on the next-gen Ford Ranger. As a result, it will be bigger than the last-generation model and will offer more technology and more ground clearance.

Inside, the new Amarok will receive a host of high-quality materials in upper-end trims, aligning with the ongoing trend where truck buyers are looking for more refinement from their trucks as they use them for work, play and personal use. That said, base models more strongly oriented at work will offer barebones cabin accoutrements.

An evolved version of VW's turbodiesel 3.0L V6 will power the truck. In its most powerful form, the engine is rated at 255 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s currently unclear which transmission will do shifting duty, however.

The new model will be built in South Africa and is expected to make its debut over the next few months. There’s nothing official that would suggest that the new Amarok will be sold in the United States.
