Matteo Medoro
Mattteo Medoro’s winning build was created from the cab and front end of a ’47 Dodge two-ton pickup joined to the frame of a ’92 Dodge Cummins 4x4.

Matteo Medoro once again joins the ranks of the SEMA Young Guns with a win at the 2020 SEMA Battle of the Builders (BOTB) Young Guns Pacific Northwest virtual regional qualifier. For the second year in a row, he moves on to compete alongside his peers in the BOTB competition this November.

His winning build, which he started working on immediately following the 2019 SEMA Show, was created from the cab and front end of a ’47 Dodge two-ton pickup joined to the frame of a ’92 Dodge Cummins 4x4. After having the frame sandblasted, he gave it a healthy coating of POR-15 rust preventer. Then he lifted the cab into place, making sure the late-model diesel powerplant would fit into the classic’s frame. Once aligned, he designed and created all of the mounts and adapters needed to fuse the two trucks together including a custom bumper and deck with ample storage for tools, a full-size jack and more.

From there, Medoro added a Northern Radiator behind the cab, fabricating all of the radiator lines and intercooler lines himself out of copper. The powertrain includes an upgraded turbo, injection pump, injectors, lift pump and a rebuilt transmission putting out 550 hp and more than 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque. A customized FLO-PRO exhaust runs through the cab and along the running boards.

The interior boasts a headliner sewn together from upcycled old Albertan potato sacks and burlap, while the seats and door panels were created from distressed leather with a pattern stitched into the seats that are based off of Medoro’s cowboy boots. The imposing truck sits on 37-in. tires all around and boasts a finish that is part patina, part fauxtina.

The Battle of the Builders competition celebrates the amazing craftsmanship and talents of people who create and build some of the most unique cars in the world. The Young Guns program is a feeder to the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition, and offers up-and-coming builders who are 27 or under the opportunity to compete to earn a spot in the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition. Furthermore, the Young Guns program recognizes and inspires the next wave of young builders and gets them actively involved within the aftermarket industry.

BendPak Expands on Both Coasts

Less than six months after opening a 100,000‐sq.‐ft. distribution center near Mobile, Alabama, to better serve customers on the East Coast, BendPak is building a new 70,000‐sq.‐ft. warehouse next door. At the same time, a 50,000‐sq.‐ft. expansion of the manufacturer’s Santa Paula, California, headquarters is on track for completion this month. BendPak’s West Coast headquarters in Santa Paula underwent a 70,000 sq.‐ft. expansion in 2017, bringing its current footprint to more than 350,000 sq. ft. The new shipping and receiving facility will take that total to more than 400,000 sq. ft. later this month. Just 30 days after opening its new Alabama distribution center this spring, BendPak purchased the adjoining property so it could further expand its presence in the eastern half of the United States. Demolition of an existing office building and warehouse on the Alabama property is complete, and construction on the new facility is about to begin. The new building will feature four dock doors, a ramp with super‐wide door, warehouse space and an additional 13,000 sq. ft. of covered flatbed staging and loading area. Administrative offices, a conference room and call center are also planned to facilitate further growth.

Linda Spencer

Webinar

Join SEMA for two new Best Exporting Practices webinars. The first session, to be held September 24, at 1:00 p.m. (PDT), will focus on “Top Tips for Negotiating Agreements with Overseas Distributors,” featuring attorneys from Australia and Sweden who specialize in the local laws regarding distributors. They inclue: Patrick Fazzone of the Washington Global Law Group in Washington, D.C., and Sydney, Australia, and also Richard Jacobsson of Eversheds Sutherland Advokatbyrå AB in Stockholm, Sweden.

Discussion points include:

  • Should a U.S. company sign an exclusive distributor agreement?
  • Is there anything U.S. companies should be aware of in Swedish/Australian law regarding such contracts?
  • Are there any government regulations/laws covering terminating the agreement?
  • General points to consider when awarding territory (the entire country/portion/neighboring countries?)
  • What is the capacity of the distributor in terms of staff/contacts in the desired region?
  • Is the agreement mutually exclusive? (if the U.S. company agrees to just sell to one distributor, is the distributor agreeing to not sell that U.S. company’s competitors products?)
  • What is required in order for the distributor to maintain exclusivity?  Possibly through performance measures, or just rely on good faith effort?
  • How often should the contract/terms be revisited?

Register now
