All California automobile service providers are required to check tire pressures for every vehicle being repaired at their facility as of September 2010. The law applies to auto maintenance/repair providers but not to auto parts distributers/retailers, auto body/paint facilities, auto glass installers or wreckers/dismantlers. California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that removes tire age as a reason to deny checking a vehicle’s tire pressure. The law recognizes that there is no national tire aging standard and therefore referencing tire age in a California regulation creates liability exposure to the service and repair industry.

Under the law, service providers are required to inflate the tires to the recommended tire pressure rating using a gauge that is accurate within 2 psi. The service provider has the right to refuse to check the pressure if the tire is “unsafe” (example: excessive tread wear) or damaged (example: crack, bulge or ply separation). The provider must note on the invoice that the tire inflation service was completed and then keep a copy of the service invoice for at least three years. The customer may decline the check if the customer affirms that a check had already been done within the last 30 days, or they will have it checked within the next seven days. The rule applies to all vehicles weighing less than 10,000 lbs.

future vehicles, spy photos, car spy shots, Nissan Leaf

Automotive News recently reported that Nissan will offer a lower-priced version of the Leaf for the ’13 model year—and the pro shooters at Brenda Priddy & Co. report that this model should reach dealerships late in the first quarter of 2013.

The team spotted the very first of the less-expensive Leaf on the road this week. While it may not look much different to the general bystander, there were obvious differences upon looking closer.

The so-called ’13-model facelift appears to be modified headlights in the same headlamp assembly, according to Priddy. The design provides more of a streamlined look, and it appears the more expensive LEDs are gone in favor of more traditional bulbs that are less expensive.

Priddy's team also points to other cost-saving items on the Leaf, including the new “hubcaps,” while the previously standard cruise control appears to be absent from this model. There are also changes in the center of the dash, but Priddy reports that those were securely covered to prevent onlookers from seeing the updates. And, while it may be a minor tweak, the black cloth interior will also be a new offering for 2013.

Entering its second year, SEMA’s Young Executives Network (YEN) Fellowship program has expanded for 2012 to award 10 of the industry’s finest emerging talent.

Through this Fellowship program, SEMA has created a mechanism for helping to fund these individuals' travel expenses for the annual SEMA Show. The Fellowship program, an exclusive YEN-member benefit, was made available to SEMA-member company employees under the age of 40. Participants are asked to take part in a number of specific Show events—including the SEMA Awards Banquet, YEN Reception, and SEI education seminars—focused on developing their business skills and expanding their professional network.

"The YEN Fellowship program is another great example of SEMA’s commitment to engage and support the next generation of SEMA leaders," said Nathan Ridnouer, SEMA’s vice president of councils and membership. "Through their participation in the annual SEMA Show, these young professionals will gain access to career-enhancing educational programs and networking events, and can leverage the experience to bring more value to their employers."

2012 SEMA Show Fellowship candidates include:

Bryant Sanchez, Exotik Auto Werkz

For more than two decades, Sanchez has been pushing the envelope using every possible tool at his disposal to design, fabricate and custom paint some of the coolest and wildest machines in South Florida, and as far reaching as the opposite end of the world. As a Miami-native gear head, art and cars ran through his blood. At the age of 19, he decided he would develop a niche of not only crafting such ideas into reality, but also offering an avenue where other customs and rods could be repaired, since most people take their cookie-cutter cars to the dealer for service. More than two decades later, and after taking a major blow when the economy tanked, Sanchez is back at what he genuinely adores, breathing life back into lost relics of time and restoring or rebuilding them with a twisted attitude for the road. There's never been a dull moment in this ambitious, crafty and talented designer's career, and he can honestly say he's laid paint, candy and graphics on everything from fire hydrants to jet skis. As founder of Exotik Auto Werkz, he's made a new name and standard for quality custom automotive design, fabrication and repair.

While attending UNOH, Harubin helped form and lead the Drag Club—a club that promoted drag racing in a legal way among the student body. He also worked on an Alcohol Funny Car team, starting at the bottom and eventually working his way to the position of crew chief. One of the highlights of his education was winning the SEMA Memorial Scholarship and attending the Show in Las Vegas. After graduation, Harubin went to work for Keystone Automotive Operations in Exeter, Pennsylvania. As an account executive for Keystone, he gets the chance to take everything he has learned and mix it with the knowledge of his accounts on a daily basis, pushing them ever higher. This creates happier customers with greater product knowledge, resulting in higher returns for the company.

Coomer is the co-founder of RxSpeed.com and president of its parent company, DiRiV Media Corp. He began competitively racing go-karts at an early age and was racing open- and closed-wheel race cars just a few years later. He grew up immersed in all aspects of racing, in addition to working in the family business of developing and selling performance racing electronics. RxSpeed was created to bridge this gap, allowing enthusiasts to easily find product information while helping businesses reach their target markets. The site includes consumer product reviews, install DIYs, product photo galleries and much more. Coomer's observations and enthusiasm led to the creation of this website, which brings enthusiasts and businesses together.

Parking at the SEMA Show—Plan Ahead

The SEMA Show is going to be bigger than ever, with activities and displays taking over much of the parking lots on and around the Las Vegas Convention Center. One particular parking lot, the Gold Lot, will be closed for all parking beginning the week prior to the SEMA Show until Wednesday of the Show due to the Global Rallycross taking place the evening of October 30. Therefore, it is important you plan ahead if you intend to park or stage a vehicle or truck at the SEMA Show. SEMA will continue to offer complimentary shuttle service to more than 30 partner hotels. SEMA and the Las Vegas Convention Center have also secured an additional parking lot nearby for overflow parking, just north on Paradise Road across the street from the Las Vegas Hotel. Complimentary shuttle service also will be provided from that parking lot. Meanwhile, the monorail is a great option for commuting to the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Registration for Badges is Still Open

While the deadline may have passed to have your badges mailed in advance to your office, it is not too late to register your staff for their badges. At this point, any registrations made will have badges waiting for you at the Exhibitor Registration onsite location, which this year is located in the meeting rooms behind the Grand Lobby, or more specifically, Room N109. Also note that while the deadline for early-bird attendee registration has passed, complimentary Exhibitor badges are still determined according to your allotment and any badges requested over and above your allotment are $25 each.

SEMA’S Official Housing Bureau Continues to Offer Great Rates to the Show

While many hotels around Las Vegas are filling up quickly, there are a few hotels still offering discounted rates through SEMA’s official housing website. SEMA is also pleased to offer two great options at two incredible and recently upgraded properties downtown at the Golden Nugget and the Plaza Las Vegas.

  • Golden Nugget: As low as $85 per night.
  • Plaza Las Vegas: As low as $65 per night.

From a luxurious non-gaming property, to a mega-resort in the heart of the Strip, and a more economical option, there is an option for everyone on the Strip as well. Below are the remaining properties still available on the Strip:

  • Circus Circus: As low as $65 per night.
  • Planet Hollywood: As low as $150 per night.
  • TI: As low as $153 per night.
  • Trump: As low as $160 per night.
  • Westin Casuarina: As low as $149 per night.

Deadline to Receive Freight at the Advance Warehouse: October 19

Friday, October 19 (tomorrow), is the deadline for freight to arrive in advance. After that date, freight must arrive at the Las Vegas Convention Center directly according to a specific schedule. Each exhibitor is assigned a target time, which is the time for your freight to arrive at the SEMA Show. You can find all target times in the bottom left corner of the Exhibitor Manual page on www.SEMAShow.com. Answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding freight delivery and when/how your freight should come to the Las Vegas Convention Center is answered on the informational sheet, which is the last link located on the left column of the Exhibitor Manual. If the time assigned does not work for you, don’t hesitate to contact Ron Pickens at Freeman by e-mail at ron.pickens@freemanco.com. He will use his best efforts to accommodate your requests.

Bringing a Vehicle to Display at the Show? Understand the Process and Differences for Booth Vehicles and Feature Vehicles Before You Arrive

Vehicles are all around the SEMA Show, and it is oftentimes confusing to understand the differences between booth vehicles and feature vehicles, and when they can be placed. Booth vehicles are those that are located inside an exhibitor’s actual booth. These can be displayed whenever an exhibitor is ready to place it in their booth. There is no specific date or time the vehicle can enter the exhibit hall; it can simply go directly to the nearest freight door and Freeman will help escort the vehicle to the booth at no charge. Feature vehicles are those vehicles sponsored by exhibitors that are placed in and around the convention center property, yet not in an exhibitor’s booth. Placement of feature vehicles is determined according to confirmations previously sent to the exhibitors when applications were submitted for feature vehicles. Most vehicles will be placed Sunday, October 28, from one check-in location in the Green Lot. Each confirmation has a check-in time, and all vehicles must proceed directly to the Green Lot entrance off of Desert Inn Road, just east of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Any questions, e-mail featurevehicle@convexx.com.

Las Vegas Monorail Offers e-Ticket Option for Last-Minute Ticket Purchases

SEMA and the Las Vegas Monorail have partnered once again to provide SEMA Show attendees and exhibitors exclusive advance purchase discounts on monorail tickets. Discounted passes are available only to convention attendees when purchasing online in advance. Single-ride and unlimited-ride day passes are also available. All monorail tickets purchased today up until the Show will be e-mailed with an eTicket barcode, which can be redeemed at the eTicket kiosks located on all monorail stations. Las Vegas Monorail riders can travel to and from the SEMA Show and the Las Vegas Strip in 15 minutes or less, with direct access to the Las Vegas Convention Center and many of the city’s most popular restaurants, shows, shops, casinos and resorts. If you have any questions, contact the Las Vegas Monorail at 702-699-8200 or sales@lvmonorail.com.
