Through the SEMA Emissions Compliance Center, staff can perform R&D or certification emissions testing, assist in the analysis of test data (including modal data), prepare certification applications and provide other laboratory and marketing services.

A common misconception is that emissions-related products not sold in California are “49-state legal.” This is not the case. The U.S. Clean Air Act prohibits the modification of street vehicles without proper certification in all 50 states. Fortunately, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) provides a method by which manufacturers can certify emissions–related products. The CARB certification is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and provides coverage for all 50 states.  

SEMA has untangled both federal and state compliance requirements, and can assist product manufacturers during the process of developing marketable, emissions-compliant products and ready them for store shelves. In fact, SEMA has developed a program that is designed to expedite the process with CARB, allowing members to proceed immediately to product testing, thereby saving enormous amounts of time and energy.
