SCRSThe Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) has announced details for all three sessions being offered as part of the 2022 OEM Collision Repair Technology Summit, taking place on Thursday, November 3, during the SEMA Show.

Held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Upper South Hall (Room S233), the Summit’s three sessions feature distinctly different discussions highlighting how trends and technological developments in modern vehicles influence vehicle repairability and collision-industry preparation.

Register for sessions individually or as part of the Full Series Pass.

The Full Series Pass provides the greatest flexibility and value, giving access to one regular Repairer Driven Education session in each available time slot, all three OEM Summit sessions, the IDEAS Collide Showcase, plus one ticket to the SCRS Sky Villa after-party on Thursday night.

The Summit agenda Includes:

Session I: 9:00 a.m.–10:30 a.m.

OEM Repair Procedure Accessibility

The foundation of a quality repair begins with access and adherence to documented repair procedures from the vehicle manufacturer. When followed, everyone in the process succeeds in establishing mutual accountability to protect consumers on America’s roadways.

Consumers should be able to assume their vehicle repairs will be performed in accordance with the documented procedures, detailed by the vehicle engineers. They should have the ability to choose an independent repair business that has invested in the facility, equipment and skillset development to meet the rigorous demands of these increasingly sophisticated, modern vehicles.

But in the collision-repair market, well-trained, well-equipped repair facilities are not struggling to gain access to collision repair procedures; they are struggling to compete against other businesses that don’t prioritize access and adherence to the available information.

In this presentation and panel, automakers will discuss access points for information, means to utilize the procedures in a repair environment, and ways to overcome myths or perceived obstacles in accessing and utilizing repair procedure data.

Featuring:

  • Mark Allen, Collision Programs Manager, Audi of America
  • Benito Cid, Collision Business Development Manager, Mercedes-Benz USA
  • Kevin Earlywine, Instructor – Collision Repair & Refinish, Toyota Motor North America
  • Wayne Weikel, Senior Director, Alliance for Automotive Innovation
  • Amber Alley, Manager at Barsotti’s Body & Fender

Moderator: Aaron Schulenburg, Executive Director, Society of Collision Repair Specialists

Repair procedures and vehicle data already exist, and the industry and consumer benefit most when they are accessed and followed.

Add OEM Summit, Session I to My Show Planner.

Session II: 11:00 a.m.– 12:30 p.m.

Tackling the Technician Crisis Together

Technicians play one of the most critical roles in proper repairs, and the increasing shortage of talent is a contributing factor with implications on the collision-repair businesses.

This session, led by Eliza Johnson of Ducker Carlisle, explores data compiled by the global market research firm that delves into the technician crisis, as well as solutions, in partnership with automakers to bolster the technician pool. The presentation will elaborate on the severity of the technician crisis in the automotive landscape, and how it is expected to evolve over the coming years, while considering technology advancements and demographic expectations.

For several years now, Carlisle has been committed to exploring solutions to address the technician shortage, specifically looking at what dealers should be doing to get new technicians in the door, to keep them in their facilities and retain them in the industry for the long-term. Johnson will elaborate on tactical examples of the Carlisle recommendations in key areas and how the research and recommendations led to the formation of the Automotive Technician Collaboration (ATC), a Carlisle-led group of nine automotive OEMs jointly tackling an industry response to the technician crisis. The collective goal is to change the perception of the automotive technician career. This is both in the eyes of the public to grow the pool of new prospective technicians entering dealerships as well as in the eyes of existing technicians, to keep them in their roles for the long haul.

Following the presentation, Johnson will then welcome a guest panel to join the conversation, seeking to explore the relationship between findings in the OEM technician space, and the carryover in how the collision industry can benefit from these learnings and build the framework for action plans to combat these pressing challenges. Panelists will provide valuable perspectives to address collision-specific activities and the correlation between budding industry activity with a shared emphasis on the growth of technical assets in the industry.

Panel featuring:

  • Dara Goroff, Vice President, Planning & Industry Talent Programming, I-CAR
  • John Helterbrand, National Program Director, Collision Engineering
  • Jennifer Maher, Executive Director, TechForce Foundation

Add OEM Summit, Session II to My Show Planner.

Session III: 1:00 p.m.–2:30 p.m.

Managing Scan Tool Choices While Ensuring Safe and Proper Repairs

When it comes to scanning, some of the most common questions asked in the industry include:

  • Why do the OEMs require the use of their factory tool when servicing safety systems?
  • Is there a difference between the factory tool and an aftermarket tool?

These questions result in spirited discussions and often assumptions that can create challenges in the repair and claims settlement process for consumers, technicians, shop owners, OEMs and carriers alike. In this session, Chris Chesney, vice president, training and organizational development at Repairify, will present to the industry the results of a detailed research project completed by the company. The field study connected multiple aftermarket tools to thousands of year, make, model and trim (YMMT) vehicles and compiled a comparative analysis of the scan results, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and the ability to clear DTCs in the same manner as the factory tool. Chesney will provide insight into how the resulting database can identify when, and if, an aftermarket tool can offer the same results as an OEM tool. The OEM Summit will be the first public visibility into the results of testing thousands of vehicles using both OEM and aftermarket tools.

Following the presentation of data, Chesney will welcome automakers to the stage to discuss how the results of their tests align with automaker guidance and requirements, and challenges faced by repairers in adherence to those repair instructions.

Panel will include:

  • Dan Dent, Manager, Collision, Certified Repair Network, Nissan Motor Corp.
  • Devin Wilcox, Program Manager and Strategist, Collision Network, Subaru of America
  • Jake Rodenroth, North American Body Repair Program Operations Manager, Lucid Motors

Add OEM Summit, Session III to My Show Planner.

Register for sessions individually or as part of the Full Series Pass.

Tickets can be secured on-site, outside the education classrooms (rooms S229–S233) in the Upper Level of the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Explorer

Here’s a first look at the ’24 Ford Explorer ST while testing in Dearborn.

Ford will launch an Electric Explorer in 2024, but in the meantime, ICE Explorers will get a nip/tuck. Up front, we can see that the Explorer ST will gain a slightly more aggressive look, with larger openings lurking below a revised grille and all-new headlights. Around back, we expect to see revised taillights that have a similar appearance to the recently shown Chinese Explorer. Inside, the Explorer should get an updated interior with a horizontally mounted display screen.

Powertrain changes aren’t expected, but the 3.0L EcoBoost may get a slight bump in power. Currently the Explorer ST is rated at 400 hp and 415 lb.-ft. of torque, it wouldn’t be surprising if those numbers rise by 3%–5%.

Expect to see the refreshed Explorer ST in 2023.

Registration for the 2022 SEMA Show, the premier gathering for the automotive specialty-equipment industry, is now open at www.semashow.com/register.

Taking place November 1–4 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the 2022 SEMA Show will build upon the positive momentum following last year’s event, which successfully connected the $47.8 billion industry in person in what was the largest automotive trade show in North America since the pandemic shut everything down in 2020.

“The SEMA Show is where industry professionals go to grow existing relationships, create new ones and push their businesses forward,” said Tom Gattuso, SEMA vice president of events. “Exhibitors are eager to showcase their products and services to the tens of thousands of qualified professionals in attendance.”

Anticipation for this year's SEMA Show ramped up in recent weeks as exhibitors selected their booth locations during Priority Space Selection, a weeks-long process that took place May 2–18.

“Enthusiasm for the 2022 Show continues to exceed last year’s, with more than 1 million sq. ft. of exhibitor space already committed for the 2022 SEMA Show and confirmed spaces running 25% above last year,” said Warren Kosikov, SEMA vice president of sales.

Attendees at the 2022 SEMA Show will learn about the latest products, trends and technology in the industry from manufacturers exhibiting throughout the entire Las Vegas Convention Center, including the surrounding parking lots. Educational seminars led by industry experts and networking events that bring market niches together will also be available during the four-day trade event.

“Our industry continues to thrive despite current challenges in the marketplace, and last year’s event proved that the value of conducting business and networking face-to-face can never be replaced,” said Gattuso. “Our mission is to help continue that momentum by providing an unparalleled experience that builds meaningful business relationships.”

Registration for the 2022 SEMA Show is offered in three categories—attendee, exhibitor and media—and everyone must qualify to attend. Attendees are encouraged to register early at www.semashow.com/register so they can secure their credentials and receive updates on breaking news from the 2022 SEMA Show.

MPMCThe SEMA Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council (MPMC) named Kyle Fischer as the council’s newest spotlight volunteer. Fischer is the director of branding and promotions at Hot Shot’s Secret, an aftermarket company that specializes in protective fuel and oil additives.

Get to know Fischer in his interview with SEMA below.

SEMA: What is your current job? What do you do and how long have you been doing it?

Kyle Fischer: I have been with Hot Shot’s Secret since 2017. After spending time as director of marketing, then director of sales, I am currently in the role of director of branding and promotions. My responsibilities include working with media and advertising partners, developing industry relationships and overseeing our promotional efforts—most notably, our motorsports involvement.

SEMA: Did you ever consider another career or industry, and what made you choose automotive manufacturing?

KF: I have worked in marketing and sales roles throughout many industries. However, I have always had a great personal passion for everything automotive. When the opportunity presented itself to join the Hot Shot’s Secret team, I did not hesitate as it provided me the ability to combine my passion with my career at an exciting company focused on manufacturing great products and advancing the automotive industry.

SEMA: How long have you been volunteering for MPMC, what inspired you to volunteer, and how has it impacted you?

KF: I have not yet had the privilege to volunteer for MPMC, but I would love to spend some time in support of this great council. I have been very impressed and thankful for my experience with MPMC, in particular the Media Trade Conferences. Dating back to the in-person conferences and through the virtual conferences, I am grateful to MPMC for playing a part in connecting me with some key industry relationships as well as great friendships.

SEMA: What do you see as the biggest challenges for the motorsports industry today, and where do you see the industry in five years?

KF: A couple of the biggest challenges for the motorsports industry today include the threat of legislative regulation and the death of many small local racetracks. I am an optimist, however. I find motivation when I see our industry band together to defend our passion, as seen with the RPM Act. And I am further motivated when I see small-town racing and racetracks in a continuous evolution to get youth into the sport and spectators in the stands. The motorsports industry has survived some big punches as of late, and this resiliency coupled with manufacturers like Hot Shot’s Secret advancing technology, I see the industry absolutely booming in five years from now.

SEMA: What’s your favorite car-related movie and what do you like about that movie?

KF: I love to have a good laugh, so my favorite car-related movie has to be “Talladega Nights.” We all have to laugh at ourselves sometimes, and this movie does a hilarious job of bringing humor to the sport of racing. Not to mention, it might be one of the most quoted movies that you hear when at the racetrack. Like Ricky Bobby’s pearl of wisdom, “If you ain’t first, you’re last!”

SEMA: On a Saturday, where can you be found?

KF: On any given Saturday, chances are you can find me at the racetrack, whether it’s for work or pleasure… or both! At Hot Shot’s Secret we have found that keeping a direct connection from the manufacturer to the racer plays a key role in R&D. That is why I am at some racetrack around the country on behalf of Hot Shot’s Secret on average three weekends per month. I’m usually enjoying my local racetrack on that fourth weekend during my time off from work, too!

Fill out an MPMC member spotlight form to highlight how you or your company are contributing to the motorsports industry. Selected candidates are eligible to be featured on MPMC's social media, SEMA News and future MPMC member updates.
