This year’s Dealer Day will focus on accessory integration, sales, profit and will also provide participants with a “how-to” manual that outlines best practices and guidelines for Dealer Accessory Programs.

With the many challenges confronting the car dealer community, it has become increasingly important for dealers to develop best practices that will result in differentiation, increased profit and, most importantly, customer loyalty. Dealer Day 2010 was specifically tailored to provide dealers with the insight and know-how to reach these goals through vehicle customization. Dressing up a few cars from time to time is just the start.

This year’s Dealer Day will focus on accessory integration, sales, profit and will also provide participants with a “how-to” manual that outlines best practices and guidelines for Dealer Accessory Programs.

A real challenge for those dealers already running an accessory program and a concern for those considering an accessory program is how to best create synergy amongst the various departments within the dealership. A key component to this year’s Dealer Day will be an Operations Panel consisting of a dealer principal or general manager, service manager, parts manager, new- and used-car sales manager, office manager and a finance manager. Questions will be asked from the perspective of an experienced accessory manager. This diverse panel will provide fascinating insight into the inner workings and challenges confronting every dealer.

Only through a community of knowledge will we grow as an industry.

SEMA members are invited to participate in the SEMA CIAPE China Business Development Conference in Beijing, China, September 23–26, 2010.
Do you make products for luxury sedans and SUVs? Judging by the growing number of imported luxury cars and SUVs in China, the market for your products could be growing there, too. Buyers of imported luxury vehicles have the money, and the desire, to personalize their vehicles. SEMA members are invited to participate in a three-day program in Beijing, China, September 23–26, 2010, to meet with up to a dozen Chinese buyers and distributors in a series of one-on-one pre-arranged meetings.

China imported 305,080 light vehicles in 2009, according to J.D. Power and Associates, down 11% because of the global economic downturn. But imports have grown steadily in recent years along with China’s economy. Growth is expected to resume this year.

Japanese and German luxury models account for the majority of imported vehicles in China.

For example, between 2007 and the end of 2010, China will import 53,812 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs, forecasts J.D. Power and Associates. In 2014 alone, 19,848 Prados are forecast to enter China.

The Lexus brand is very popular in China. From 2007 to the end of 2010, 13,376 Lexus RX series luxury SUVs will be imported. And imports will continue to grow, according to J.D. Power and Associates. In 2014 alone, more than 10,000 RX SUVs are forecast to be imported, for example.

Lexus sedans are also a hit. From 2007 to the end of 2010, China will import nearly 70,000 Lexus ES sedans, according to J.D. Power and Associates. In 2014, nearly 44,000 units are forecast to be imported.

The BMW X-5 luxury SUV is another popular imported model. In 2010, China is forecast to import 11,750 X-5 SUVs, up 12.8% compared to 2009.

Mercedes is another popular imported brand. From 2007 to the end of 2010, imports will top 51,000 Mercedes S-class sedans, forecasts J.D. Power and Associates. Indeed, China is the largest market in the world for the S-class.

Imported automotive accessories fit imported models, and also some domestically produced foreign-brand models, say distributors in China. So the market is not limited to imports.

“You have to consider which product is being installed on which car,” said Becky Zhou, executive assistant at Full Throttle Motorsports of Beijing. “It varies from product to product.”

Senate Resolution 513 designates July 9, 2010, as “Collector Car Appreciation Day” to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.
The United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 513 (S. Res. 513) at the request of SEMA and the Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) council designating July 9, 2010, as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.” The resolution was the result of an effort undertaken by ARMO as a means to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

S. Res. 513 was sponsored by Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus members Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). Senators Tester and Burr have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, and S. Res. 513 reaffirms their understanding of the cultural importance of collector cars. The caucus is an informal, non-partisan group that pays tribute to America’s ever-growing love affair with the car and motorsports. The caucus recognizes the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation’s appreciation for motorsports.

The resolution was the result of an effort undertaken by SEMA and its councils as a means to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. Restoration businesses help save our nation’s heritage while providing well-paying, high-skilled jobs nationwide.

SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald said, “We greatly appreciate the United States Senate’s recognition of the important role classic car restoration serves in our country. As Americans gather at car cruises and other events in conjunction with ‘Collector Car Appreciation Day’ on July 9, these vital contributions will be honored and preserved.”

In recognition of the day, collectors and enthusiasts will be hosting events across the country. Jim Barber, Chairman of SEMA’s ARMO council said, “Individuals, car clubs and businesses affiliated with ARMO are proud to be recognized as leaders in today’s economy. Car cruises, club gatherings and other educational events will be scheduled for July 9 nationwide. ARMO is looking forward to assisting with these events and is appreciative of this special acknowledgment by the Senate.”

Dennis Overholser, chairman of SEMA’s Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) council, said, “HRIA’s commitment to preserving and promoting the automotive restoration industry through its projects and education programs is well represented by this resolution. We are pleased that our elected officials have acknowledged our positive presence in local communities. I look forward to working with other business owners, collectors and enthusiasts to make the inaugural ‘Collector Car Appreciation Day’ a success nationwide.”

As part of “Collector Car Appreciation Day,” a variety of events are currently being scheduled to commemorate America’s time-tested love affair with the automobile. For a listing of events, contact SEMA Council Director Jim Skelly at 909/978-6690.
