The New Global Tire Expo—Powered by TIA

For 2010, SEMA and the Tire Industry Association (TIA) have created a tire industry-only section of the SEMA Show called the Global Tire Expo—Powered by TIA. The new Expo will be open to all segments of the tire industry, including automotive, commercial, retreading, recycling and more.

With 200 exhibiting companies, the Expo will also include expanded educational session tracks targeted to the tire market. The tracks are “TPMS at 10,” “Tires at 2,” “Management at 4,” and “Truck Tires @ 10.”

Every day of the Show, each track will feature a session relevant to tire dealers and will be led by knowledgeable experts in the tire industry. The educational sessions will be located in the skybridge between the Central and South Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC).

“By working with TIA, we have created the Global Tire Expo to meet the needs of the tire industry,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “We’re excited and confident that the 2010 SEMA Show and the Global Tire Expo will be more meaningful and relevant than ever before for tire manufacturers and buyers.”

Kersting pointed out that the SEMA Show has the added benefit of drawing more than 50,000 buyers from all over the world, including those not currently in the tire market. “Many buyers at the SEMA Show are looking to expand their product lines to include tire-related products,” he said. “The dedicated floor section and the other new programs will help buyers discover the potential that the tire industry has to offer.”

New Products Showcase

SEMA News-September 2010-Events

”The New Products Showcase is arguably the single best, most effective tool exhibitors have to reach the largest audience possible,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications and events. Exhibitors may enter one product category at no cost if submitted before October 8, by visiting www.SEMAShow.com/newproducts.

With nearly 2,000 companies exhibiting throughout 1 million sq. ft. of the LVCC, the New Products Showcase makes it easy for buyers to get a quick glimpse of what’s new and debuting at the Show.

“The New Products Showcase is arguably the single best, most effective tool exhibitors have to reach the largest audience possible,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA vice president of communications and events.

“When you consider that every exhibitor can enter a product at absolutely no cost, it’s baffling to me that someone would pass up the opportunity.”

In addition to displaying products in a high-profile area of the SEMA Show, entering the SEMA Show New Products Showcase provides exhibitors with an opportunity to win a SEMA New Product Award. Winners are announced at the New Products Breakfast before the opening of the Show. In addition, professional photographs are taken of every entry and are provided to domestic and international media throughout the year.

“The New Products Breakfast is the pep rally before the Show,” MacGillivray said. “It’s valuable for business reasons because attendees can view the products the judges selected as the best products for the Show. The leading buyers who attend are looking to connect with exhibitors.”

Exhibitors may now enter one product category at no cost if submitted before October 8, by visiting here.

First-Time Exhibitors

The number of first-time exhibitors signed up to attend the 2010 SEMA Show had grown to more than 250 at press time. Based on previous SEMA Shows, this number should double before November 2. Each year, SEMA welcomes hundreds of new exhibitors to the Show, and this year is no exception. These leading-edge exhibitors will be displaying all-new product offerings that represent new sales and profit opportunities for retailers, jobbers and distributors. Check out a list of all exhibitors here.

Powersports Dealer Update Workshops

Presented by Gart Sutton & Associates and open to all powersports dealers, the Powersports Dealer Update Workshops at the 2010 SEMA Show will provide high-level training from industry experts. Eight powersports dealer-specific education workshops will cover essential parts and accessories, finance and insurance, sales, service and dealership-management topics. Registration includes two industry keynote speaker lunches and a special state-of-the-industry powersports panel.

“I am excited about our partnership with Gart Sutton & Associates, a highly respected firm that drives top powersports, marine and recreational vehicle dealers to superior operations, sales and profitability,” said Dan Hobgood, SEMA’s senior director of marketing. “Sutton and his crew transform real-world experiences into world-class education.”

SEMA News-September 2010-Events

Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO, addresses the crowd at last year’s Dealer Day Conference, held during the 2009 SEMA Show. This year’s conference will focus on the three key components of successful dealer accessory programs.

The Powersports Dealer Update Workshops will take place Monday, November 1, and Tuesday, November 2, at the Renaissance Hotel in Ballrooms 1–3. For more information, visit here.

Dealer Day Conference

The 2010 SEMA Show will feature a targeted program specifically for auto dealers on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, from 8:30 a.m.–1:45 p.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton, Pavilion 1. The program marks the third consecutive year that the Dealer Day Conference will be held at the SEMA Show.

“The number of dealers attending the SEMA Show continues to grow each year, and during the past two years that we’ve held a dedicated Dealer Day Conference, we’ve seen more and more participants express a real interest in incorporating an accessories program into their businesses,” Kersting said. “We’re excited about the 2010 program, where dealers will be able to learn how to increase sales and profits through accessories.”

From integration and the sales process to profit generation, the program provides dealers with practical information and resources that will serve as a catalyst in their daily operations. Also featured will be an operations panel consisting of a dealer principal or general manager, a service manager, a parts manager, a new- and used-car sales manager, an office manager and a finance manager. Participants will receive tools, resources and best practices for starting a successful accessories program as well as for enhancing an existing program.

“Dealer Day represents a new business opportunity for auto dealers,” MacGillivray added. “The dealer business is evolving, and they are coming to our industry for more revenue and business opportunities than ever before.”

SCRS Repairer-Driven Education

The Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) educational track, entitled Repairer-Driven Education (RDE), will feature more than 21 seminars, many of which are being offered for the first time during the 2010 SEMA Show. All of the seminars will specifically focus on issues and information that are relevant to collision-repair professionals operating in today’s marketplace.

SEMA News-September 2010-Events

The SEMA Businesswomen’s Network’s annual Speed Networking Breakfast award ceremony has become one of the premier, must-attend networking events during SEMA Show week.

The RDE track, being conducted between 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, and Friday, November 5, will be launched with an inspiring opening seminar conducted by Charles Coonradt, author of The Game of Work, Managing the Obvious and The Better People Leader.

The two-day RDE program will also be packed full of information from speakers such as Mike Anderson; Toby Chess; Erica Eversman, J.D.; John Sweigart; Patrick McGuire, Esq.; Steven Feltovich; Tim Ronak; Greg Horn and many more.   SEMA News-September 2010-Event Seminars

The Technology Briefing SuperSessions will be moderated by SEMA Vice President of Vehicle Technology John Waraniak and will feature experts from leading OEMs, suppliers, research organizations, government agencies, racing and academia.

One of SEMA’s major vehicle technology strategies is to help the specialty-equipment industry gain a deeper understanding of active-passive safety systems and vehicle dynamics performance of aftermarket-modified vehicles so that member companies can overcome the challenges and develop solutions for components and systems that affect the entire vehicle.

This first SuperSession will help members understand which aftermarket products affect electronic stability control (ESC) performance and the methods and cost-effective tools now available to SEMA members to evaluate how their products might affect ESC as well as describe the new technologies being introduced by the OEMs. It will include not only an overview of ESC implementation by the automakers and original-equipment suppliers, but also simulations and actual hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) evaluations of modified vehicle dynamics performance using CarSim and dSPACE equipment.

SEMA developed an HIL system based on a collaborative effort with dSPACE Inc. and CarSim vehicle dynamics simulation software from Mechanical Simulation Inc. in order to evaluate and simulate the ESC performance of modified vehicles. SEMA’s HIL technology is the same as that used by all OEMs and major suppliers around the world to develop, test and simulate vehicle dynamics, new chassis system components, engines, powertrains and vehicle electronic control systems.

Attendees at the 2010 Driving Safe SuperSession will learn about practical approaches for determining compatibility and compliance of a given aftermarket product with ESC system performance. The panel members will respond to questions from the audience, and Mechanical Simulation will provide a vehicle simulator that will demonstrate the impact of specific aftermarket modifications and components on vehicle dynamics.

Driving Green Performance: Hot Rod Hybrids and Muscle Electrics
Speakers and Panelists:

  • Keynote: Mark Reuss, President, General Motors North America
  • Scott Atherton, CEO of American LeMans Series (ALMS)
  • Imtiaz Haque, Executive Director, Clemson University-ICAR
  • Patrick Reininger, Vice President of Pacific Region, R.L. Polk & Co.

  • Azhar Hussain, Founder, TTXGP eGrandPrix
  • Peter Diamandis, Chairman and CEO, X-Prize Foundation

The most valuable automotive applications and services may not be apparent yet. Developing accessory-friendly systems and open innovation processes that allow for future upgrades and interoperability will help ensure profitable personalization across the entire automotive and consumer electronics value chain.

Alternative powertrain development and vehicle evolution have accelerated significantly over the past few years. Green is no longer simply an option; it is a must. Nearly 85% of Americans now consider themselves environmentalists, so hybrids and electrics represent the next generation of enthusiasts, cruisers and hot rods. In fact, sales of hybrid and clean diesel-powered cars are projected to more than triple by 2015, with the production of hybrids alone increasing to about 3 million vehicles a year within a decade.

Although many new powertrain technologies, platforms and vehicle architectures are being introduced by every major automaker, significant innovations and improvements in the internal combustion engine, including gasoline direct injection, turbocharging, supercharging and electronic fuel management, will continue to be major areas in the growth of the performance aftermarket for years to come. This second Technology Briefing SuperSession will focus on green performance and SEMA’s commitment to keeping its members informed about the latest vehicle technologies and opportunities associated with high-performance engineering and energy efficiency.

The SuperSession will include discussions not only about powertrain systems, but also new materials and innovations for reducing vehicle mass; body kits with reduced drag; lubrication systems; bearings and hubs that reduce friction; wheels and tires with less rolling resistance; optical systems and cameras that replace sensors; and batteries and energy storage devices with increased performance. These technologies, as well as developments that reduce and recover lost energy from braking and suspension systems, represent vast opportunities for SEMA companies and will appeal to consumers who demand increased mileage without sacrificing performance.

The session will also include presentations and discussions regarding the findings and insights of the latest research studies on market segments and consumer behavior toward alternative powertrains and how they will impact the specialty-equipment industry.

Driving Connected: Integrating Automotive and Consumer Electronics
Speakers and Panelists:

  • Keynote 1: Dr. Andrew Brown, Society of Automotive Engineers President and Chief Technical Officer, Delphi
  • Keynote 2: Peter Appel, Administrator, Research and Innovative Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation
  • Richard Wallace, Senior Director, Center for Automotive Research
  • Thilo Koslowski, Managing Vice President of Automotive, Gartner
  • Roger Curtis, President, Michigan International Speedway
  • T.C. Wingrove, Director of Innovation, North America, Visteon
  • Mike Blicher, Director, Business Development, Immersion
  • Stephan Tarnutzer, Chief Operating Officer, DGE Inc.

Connected vehicle technologies are changing how vehicles are operated and how they interact with each other as well as with the transportation infrastructure. Private and public sectors are making significant investments in hardware, software applications and vehicle content to improve the driving experience with products, services and applications that are built in, beamed in or brought in to today’s vehicles.

Connected vehicles equipped with advanced systems are a hit with consumers, as evidenced by the fact that Ford vehicles equipped with Sync sell twice as quickly as those without. On-board vehicle technology combined with vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside technologies in the areas of safety, mobility, infotainment, diagnostics and personal convenience are creating exciting product and service opportunities for specialty-equipment and performance aftermarket manufacturers, distributors, retailers and installers. This 2010 Technology Briefing SuperSession focuses on the accelerating product development, deployment, acceptance and integration of automotive and consumer electronics.

This session will examine recent developments in IntelliDriveSM and other connected vehicle efforts, along with emerging market and product development opportunities for leading mobile-electronics aftermarket companies, OEMs and suppliers. The challenges, opportunities and solutions for SEMA members lie in how effectively these features, devices and accessories can be integrated into the vehicle. A renewed level of cooperation and collaboration between the automakers and the specialty-equipment industry can offer more value to consumers through vehicles that are designed and engineered as open platforms and systems, allowing future content, applications and upgrades to be quickly and
easily integrated.

This Vehicle Technology SuperSession emphasizes the fact that open frameworks, open innovation processes and collaboration are the way forward and the most valuable automotive applications and services may not be apparent yet. Developing accessory-friendly systems and integration capabilities that allow for future upgrades, interoperability and social utility will help ensure profitable personalization across the entire automotive and consumer electronics value chain.

La Crème de la Crème

  SEMA News-September 2010-Internet

Arkview offers a number of external, portable adapters that make easy work of adding a second or more monitors to a desktop or laptop system.

While hundreds of hardware and software solutions emerge on the market each year angling for your PC productivity dollar, only a small percentage offer significant gains. Here’s a sampling of la crème de la crème—PC productivity tools that will leave you wondering how you ever got along without them.

Arkview Display Adapter, from Arkview, for two-monitor systems, $80:

Once you’ve grown accustomed to using a PC with two monitors, going back to a one-monitor system feels like losing an arm. The solution? This external hook-up, cigarette-pack-sized device, which allows you to quickly add a second monitor via your PC’s USB port. It’s especially handy when you’re traveling with a laptop and want to easily add a second monitor.

The solution comes complete with all the cables and connectors you need to handle virtually any two-monitor combination. Plus, installation of Arkview is as easy as loading the software and plugging the second monitor in to any USB port. When I tested it, the software configured a two-display system the second I plugged in the second monitor, automatically. Effortless.

Switchman Combo, from Raritan, $150:

This is an extremely useful interface that allows you to control up to four PCs and four peripherals with the same keyboard, monitor and mouse. With a one-button click, you can jump from one PC or peripheral to the next. For me, Switchman is a great insurance policy. I use it to keep a spare PC handy, loaded with all the programs I use, just in case my newest system suddenly crashes. Instead of being bogged down in crisis repair mode, I click to the next PC and handle the repairs at a more convenient time.

Overall, the Combo brings a whole new meaning to the concept of multitasking. Set-up is easy—simply cable-in your PCs and peripherals to the interface. Plus, if you’re having any trouble, tech support is very helpful and is based in the United States.

ABF Outlook Express Backup, from ABF Software, $30:

This e-mail backup program has saved my bacon more times than I can remember. With one click, ABF backs up all my e-mails to a single file, which can be easily copied to an external hard drive or keychain flash drive. Restoring that e-mail to the same computer—or a different one, if I prefer—also requires only one click. I’ve used the program in its various iterations for nearly a decade with no problems.

  • Two tips: If you’re using ABF on a freshly formatted PC, be sure to open Outlook Express and view an e-mail in that program before running ABF. Doing so creates a store folder for your e-mail, which ABF needs to operate. Also, when restoring your e-mail to a different PC, re-create any special folders you’ve created for yourself in Outlook Express. If you have a folder named “Old.Mail,” for example, you need to recreate this folder in Outlook Express before restoring your e-mail with ABF.

Free E-mail Back-Up in the Cloud, from Google, free: For data back-up professionals, the overriding mantra is “redundant systems.”  Toward that end, you can also back-up your e-mail in the cloud by signing up for a free Google e-mail account and routing all your messages through Google’s servers. Since the service allows you to rename your Google account e-mail address with an address featuring the name of your company, no one will be the wiser. Plus, you can send and receive Google e-mail from your favorite mail program, such as Outlook or Outlook Express.

  • Why I’m a believer: After losing two years’ worth of e-mail in a system crash recently, I restored my PC and watched somewhat amazedly as Google automatically re-downloaded all those lost e-mails to my PC. Essentially, if my office is hit by a meteor (hopefully, while I’m absent), I, or my next of kin, can still can recover all my e-mails, thanks
    to Google.

Cobian Backup 10, from Cobian Soft, free:

The problem with most data backup programs is that you’re forced to store your backup in a compressed form. That may sound eminently efficient in principle, until your PC suddenly goes kabloey, and you discover that your handy-dandy backup program doesn’t restore your compressed data properly. (Been there, done that, ranting for hours.) Cobian eliminates this post-nuclear possibility by offering the option of non-compressed backups. Essentially, it will copy a file as is to another place or external drive (which I prefer). I’ve been using this program in its various iterations for years and have never had a problem. There’s something to be said for switching over to your external backup drive and being able to open any backup file in real time, sans shenanigans. Overall, Cobian Backup is very easy to use and very reliable.

Driver Magician, from GoldSolution Software, $30:

This is a great fail-safe program for all those upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista and earlier versions of Windows. With this program, you can scan Vista or another version of Windows for all your hardware drivers and double-check to ensure that all those drivers work with Windows 7. If not, you’ll have the opportunity to find and store Windows 7-compatible drivers before you actually do the upgrade.

Driver Magician is also great for people who want to do a clean installation of Windows 7—or essentially, erase what’s on a hard drive and start fresh with the new operating system. In that case, you’ll absolutely need Driver Magician to identify all the drivers you’ll need before you do the fresh installation. Another very cool feature: Driver Magician allows you to store all of your hardware drivers in an executable file, which can be used to auto-install all your system’s drivers after a system reformat.

Batch DOC and DOCX Converter, from Batchwork, $80:

This is a very helpful utility for those looking to view new Microsoft Word files on older versions of Word. Simply click on a .DOCX file with this program, and you’ll be able to see and work with it in your older version of Word. Plus, the software also auto-converts large batches of new Word .DOCX files to older formats if you prefer.

The program also works in reverse, converting .DOC files to .DOCX. One note: Microsoft offers a free conversion utility that does the same thing—Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 file Formats ). However, adding such Microsoft updates sometimes slows down your PC’s overall performance.

Norton Internet Security, from Symantec , $70:

I’ve been using various iterations of this program for nearly a decade and have never had a virus, malware or spyware problem during that time. Granted, the program does slow down a PC’s performance somewhat, but Norton IS definitely has less of an impact than competitors McAffee and Kapersky, in my experience.

The secret to using this program is to buy the current year and simply renew your subscription each year at the Norton IS website—instead of installing Norton’s yearly “upgrades”—for as long as possible. The reason: More often than not, I’ve found that Symantec’s yearly upgrades to the software—including the upgrade from Norton IS 2009 to Norton IS 2010—run slower than the previous year’s version. Also, don’t despair if you have the 2009 version and see a great sale on the 2010 version. Simply buy the 2010 version and use its key code to extend your 2009 version subscription by another year.

Norton Utilities, from Symantec, $50:

This program is advertised to make your PC run markedly faster and certainly rang the bell in my tests. Another program that has been around for decades, Norton Utilities, is a collection of tools that tweak your PC for optimum performance. Once installed, it takes about 20 minutes for a complete run-through, and you always have the option to skip a tool you prefer not to use or “dial back” to a previous instance of your PC’s settings if you don’t like the results rendered by any particular tool. Worth it.

Roxio Creator Pro 2010, from Roxio, $110:

If your barebones PC didn’t come with disk-copying software, this is a reliable product to add. Around for years, Creator Pro soars through the basics—copying disks, ripping and organizing your audio, editing and burning video DVDs—with flying colors. Plus, there are plenty of specialty functions, such as authoring for Blu-ray disks, complete PC hard-disk backup and HD camera video to disk conversion. Roxio also offers a stripped-down version of Creator, but for a few dollars more, you get it all
with Pro.

ACT!, from Sage, $195:

Another stalwart that has been around for decades, ACT is one of the most fully featured, user-friendly programs I’ve come across. With this software, you’ll have fingertip access to all your contacts along with quick-click access to all your notes and history associated with each contact. You can also slice and dice your contacts database using dozens of variables with this program. Plus, any version of your ACT! database is easily exportable to other common programs, such as Microsoft Excel. (Database imports into ACT! are also a snap.) ACT! is extremely customizable, plus there are dozens of optional, specialized plug-ins you can buy for special needs. The newest version is designed to integrate with social media and comes with new dashboards and available reports. In a phrase: It’s a no-brainer purchase if you’re looking for a best-bet, easy-to-use contact manager with all the bells and whistles.
