2013 BMW M3

Spy shooter Brenda Priddy and her team have spied several next-generation BMW 3-Series variants in the past several months. Here are a couple of shots of the ’13 BMW M3 sedan.

The sportier wheels and tires, big brakes, cross-drilled rotors and quad-tip exhaust were all the team needed to see to know they spotted M division's latest vehicle.

Because it's still very early in development, details about this car are a little slim, but the biggest question remains, "what BMW will do with the motor?" The rumors that Priddy and her team have heard suggest that the new M3 may feature a straight six-cylinder motor with three turbochargers, good for 450 hp.

According to Brenda Priddy, BMW M boss Dr. Friedrich Nitschke said of the next M3: "There will be a bigger focus on very low fuel consumption, and the new M3 will prove this."

This seems to lend some weight to the tri-turbo, six-cylinder motor.

With the participation of SEMA-member performance parts manufacturers and legendary engine builder Ed Pink, the SEMA Scholarship Committee will have a complete dyno-tested 302 Ford engine—based on a Dart block and cylinder heads—up for auction on eBay concurrent with the upcoming SEMA Show. Proceeds will benefit the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund (SMSF). Simultaneously, a customized Dodge Charger and Avenger will also be auctioned to benefit the SMSF.

Each year, the SMSF distributes between $100,000–$150,000 in scholarships to deserving students who plan a career in the automotive industry. This includes awards for vocational school, and two-year, four-year and postgraduate work, with a percentage designated for the families of employees of SEMA-member companies. There is also a Loan Forgiveness Program to help repay student loans for employees of SEMA-member firms.

The engine is targeted to produce in excess of 400 hp, but will be designed for long-term street durability. It is applicable to many niche markets, including street rods, Cobra kit cars, custom classic trucks, Mustang restomods and other street-performance applications.

In announcing the promotion, SEMA Scholarship Committee member and Project Coordinator Bill Holland said, “Ed Pink Racing Engines (EPRE) is exceptionally well qualified to perform the build and will bring tremendous cache to the project. While 'The Old Master' is probably best known for his exploits with fuel-burning SOHC Ford and Chrysler Hemi engines, the company has expanded beyond its drag-racing roots and has built many highly successful engines for IndyCar, Midget, Sprint Car and Endurance Road Racing applications. Ed, EPRE General Manager Frank Honsowetz and owner Tom Malloy have a cadre of highly qualified, experienced technicians who will assist in the building and testing of this engine at the Ed Pink Racing Engines facility in Van Nuys, California.”

  SEMA Show Overhead
Exhibitor participation for the 2011 SEMA Show is tracking up 14% over this time last year, with new exhibitors signing up every day.

The auto-parts industry shows no signs of letting up on the throttle in spite of turbulence on Wall Street, at least not yet. Even though the economy as a whole has been volatile, consistently positive data is still coming in around the SEMA Show, which is seeing growth in square footage and attendance continues to power ahead.

“Exhibitors and buyers seem to be saying that the more uncertainty there is in the economy, the more they need to be at the SEMA Show,” said SEMA Vice President of Communications and Events Peter MacGillivray. “The automotive community is recognizing the Show as a highly efficient way to do business. That’s understandable—where else can you meet with hundreds of buyers over a four-day period?”

Exhibitor participation is tracking up 14% over this time last year, with new exhibitors signing up every day. Many of the new exhibitors will be at the Show for the first time.

In addition to the positive trend among exhibitors, buyer registration is up 43% and media registration is up a whopping 75%.

Another indicator of the Show’s vitality, housing nights sold, is tracking at a rate 97% higher than last year. That statistic indicates that more attendees will be coming and that they plan to stay longer.

Many exhibitors are taking advantage of SEMA-sponsored cost reductions, such as free drayage for the first 1,000 lbs. of freight. Enhanced promotion via the popular Ideas Alive: Featuring the New Products Showcase—free for the first product—is another benefit that ensures exhibitors get the most bang for their buck.

To view the Show floor, find out about enhanced services or check the index of exhibiting companies, visit the new SEMA Show website at www.SEMAShow.com.
