Movers & Shakers: Sports Car Digest Picks Carey for Auction Editor; Hurst Launches Custom Shop; Varrone Named Top Auto Educator

Tom Varrone of Phoenix, Arizona, was named the 2010 Educator of the Year during the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT) Conference held recently at Seminole State College of Florida in Sanford, Florida. Each year, Mitchell 1 recognizes one of the nation’s top teachers for excellence in automotive repair instruction. Varrone was presented with a check for $500 and a recognition certificate. He also receives a one-year, complimentary subscription to Mitchell 1’s OnDemand5.com for the school where he teaches. Varrone leads the BMW Service Technician Education Program (STEP) and the BMW FastTrack program at the Universal Technical Institute, Phoenix campus. Prior to joining the faculty at the Universal Technical Institute, he worked as a factory trainer for the Service Technology Group for General Motors Corp. Varrone holds several certifications, including BMW Level I, Master Automotive ASE, Advanced Level Engine Performance ASE, Master Machinist ASE and Alternate Fuels Specialist ASE.

Rick Carey has joined Sports Car Digest as auction editor, where he will provide overall market insight and pre- and post-auction reports with perspective gained from nearly two decades of following the collector car market. Carey is one of the first people to report on the collector car market, and he has one of the largest databases of auction transactions. He has contributed to AutoWeek and Classic & Sports Car and is a member of the International Motor Press Association and the Society of Automotive Historians. He has been auctions editor of Victory Lane magazine and its sister publication, Vintage Oval Racing, since 1999 and was auctions editor of Car Collector magazine from 2003 to 2010.

Whittier Car Show
The 10th Annual Uptown Whittier Car Show is set for 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. this Saturday, August 14.

Hundreds of pre-1975 cars, truck and street rods will gather in Whittier, California, on August 14 for the 10th Annual Uptown Whittier Car Show. The annual gathering is set for 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. and feature a host of activities, including two stages with entertainment, a BBQ Cook-Off, raffles and more. Whittier has been the home of Hedman Hedders since the company moved its manufacturing facility there in 2000, and Hedman support its hometown’s effort to continually improve and expand the annual event. Hedman Performance Group staff and products will be on hand during the show, alongside more than a dozen cars, trucks and rods all running Hedman Hedders. Classic Design Concepts will offer a limited run of the movie-inspired car “FireBreather” based on the current generation Camaro from the new motion picture “Jinn.” A total of 50 “Signature Series” Firebreathers will be built and a limited run of components will be offered for the GM musclecar through select dealers nationwide. Based on a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, the FireBreather was designed by Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad, writer and director of the new film, in conjunction with Classic Design Concepts. The car features a radical new front fascia, hood, rear fascia, grill and graphics. It has a more aggressive stance due to an Eibach Pro-Plus Performance Handling Package, custom wheels and Pirelli tires. FireBreather’s 6.2L V8 feeds into a tuned exhaust from JBA.

On October 1, 2010, the Investech Audio Group will relaunch the Audiobahn brand in the mobile electronics industry. The company stated that products sold under the Audiobahn brand will include amplifiers, subwoofers, tweeters, speakers, capacitors, processors, enclosures and more, and the return to the market will be accompanied by newly revamped products and special promotions. To celebrate the re-launch, Audiobahn announced a pre-launch website, which counts down to the official launch on October 1.

  Hurst Garage will offer tailored customization options installed by Hurst Garage technicians to current-model Camaro, Mustang and Challenger owners.

Hurst Performance has added the Hurst Garage to its headquarters in Southern California. The new addition, which will be open to the public beginning October 2010, will offer tailored customization options installed by Hurst Garage technicians to current-model Camaro, Mustang and Challenger owners. The same Hurst technicians who design, test and build the limited-edition Performance Series vehicles are responsible for the work done at the Hurst Garage. DuPont Performance Coatings (DPC) introduced three new marketing courses specially designed to target four key audiences: consumers, insurers, fleets and dealers. The courses—Marketing to Consumers, Marketing to Insurers & Fleets and Marketing to Dealers—are offered as part of the DuPont Performance Services (DPS) educational series. Each course includes video role plays of many of the tools and techniques in practical use, as well as numerous exercises including a key exercise that encourages repairers to build a marketing budget customized for their target markets and showcasing the benefits their repair center offers.

Motorz TV has announced that the Sears Blue Tool Crew will be the exclusive provider of tools that host Chris Duke will use, review and discuss on the show and online. In July, the company began a giveaway from the Sears Blue Tool Crew at the Motorz TV website.
