NASCAR CHANGES QUALIFYING, CHAMP CAR DEFECTIONS AND OTHER RACING NEWS

ADJUSTMENTS: NASCAR will make several competition adjustments for the 2008 Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series seasons. Among them will be a change in qualifying procedure whereby all teams not locked into starting fields will qualify at the end of the respective qualifying sessions. As well, all fine money will be donated to the NASCAR Foundation.

LEAVING: Champ Car World Series Vice President of Racing Operations Tony Cotman has left the organization. As well, Champ Car Atlantic title winner Rafael Matos has foregone the $2 million sponsorship he earned for winning the series and signed to drive for Andretti Green Racing in the Indy Pro Series.

EXTENSION: British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton has signed a five-year contract extension with Team McLaren. The extension will keep Hamilton with the team through the 2012 season.

SIGNED ON: Funny Car racer Jerry Toliver has become part of the Don Schumacher Racing NHRA operation for the 2008 season, bringing sponsorship from Rockstar energy drink.

GOING GREEN: The American Le Mans Series has entered into a partnership with the U.S. government to continue its “green” racing initiative.

NEW TEAM: Gravity Motorsports, a division of Gravity Entertainment, is expected to join the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on a limited basis later this season, with eyes on a full campaign in 2009.
