Sonoma Raceway Selected for Make the Future California Featuring Shell Eco-Marathon Americas in 2018

Shell Oil Company, in conjunction with Speedway Motorsports Inc., has announced Sonoma Raceway as the 2018 location for Make the Future California featuring Shell Eco-marathon Americas, April 19–22, 2018. Make the Future California provides a platform for innovation, collaboration and conversation around the world’s energy challenges, as part of a global series of events through 2018. At the heart of the events is Shell Eco-marathon, an energy-efficiency competition for students, requiring them to design, build and test ultra-energy-efficient vehicles, push the boundaries of what is technically possible, and inspire thinking about the challenges and opportunities for future mobility. Make the Future California will host two Shell Eco-marathon competitions: Shell Eco-marathon Mileage Challenge, where students compete to see whose vehicle design can go the farthest on the least amount of fuel, and Shell Eco-marathon Drivers’ World Championship Regional Final, which marries energy efficiency with speed in a race to be crowned the regional champion, and secure their place in the Drivers’ World Championship Grand Final, to be held in London in 2018. For the last 11 years, students participating in Shell Eco-marathon Americas have designed ultra-energy efficient vehicles, with some achieving more than 3,500 mpg. Student teams compete in two vehicle classes. The Prototype class invites students to enter futuristic, streamlined vehicles, and the UrbanConcept class focuses on “roadworthy,” energy-efficient vehicles aimed at meeting the real-life needs of drivers. Entries are divided into three energy categories: Internal Combustion: gasoline, diesel, and ethanol; Hydrogen Fuel Cell; and Battery Electric. Student teams wishing to compete in the 2018 Shell Eco-marathon Americas in California should register by October 12, 2017. For more information, visit the Shell Eco-marathon website.

Toyo Tires presents Ken Block's “Climbkhana: Pikes Peak”

Toyo Tires presents Climbkhana,” the next generation of Ken Block’s Gymkhana series of viral videos. The all-new concept is a hybrid of the driving showcased in the previous films, blended with a rally-road-style attack on unique roads around the world. To kick off this new series, Block chose Pikes Peak Highway outside Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is billed as America’s second oldest continually running race, and one of the first places Block ever raced in his career. For production duties, Block brought his long-time friend and business partner at Hoonigan Brian Scotto to direct and eight-time Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Champion and Radical Media Director Jeff Zwart. Block tackled Pikes Peak in his ’65 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR, powered by a Hoonicorn V2—a 1,400hp, twin-turbo, methanol-fueled engine. The film, presented by Toyo Tires, Ford and Pennzoil, premiered last week at The Petersen Museum in Los Angeles.

Proven veterans and seasoned youngsters earned championships last weekend in the Kenda Final Rounds at ERX Motor Park.

TORC: The Off-Road Championship Round 13 Results

Round 13 of the Kenda Final Rounds wrapped up the 2017 TORC Series season at ERX Motor Park last weekend, where proven veterans and seasoned youngsters earned championships. In the PRO 4 race CJ Greaves took the win and his third PRO 4 championship of his career. The PRO 2 field saw 14 trucks come to the line, but when the chaos and slinging dirt finally subsided, only 10 remained and Brad Lovell led them all through the checkered. In PRO Light, the Kleiman brother duo of Cody and Kyle charged from their third-row positions to eventually battle for the lead, but they didn’t count on Chad Rayford having his best race of his TORC Series career. In the PRO Stock UTV class, Zach Martin grabbed the early lead from Greaves and never relinquished it. In the PRO Mod UTV class, Kyle Chaney held the slimmest of margins over Rodney Van Eperen, who handed over driving duties at the start of the weekend to Johnny Greaves due to injury. Jumping out to an early lead, Chaney held off Greaves lap after lap, and in the process brought home the championship.

Now in its fifth generation the Impreza, specifically the WRX and WRX STI, have made an impact on the performance aftermarket, and is a major rival to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. The performance upgrades to the GC8 aim to bring a heightened sense of the emerging rally/tuner enthusiasts, while living on the legacy of the Subaru brand. The GC8 piloted by Manansla and Pak will compete in eight events in 2018.

Here’s a first look at the ’19 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in a regular cab “work truck” configuration. Up until now we’ve only seen crew and super crew variants. The Silverado regular cab is equipped with an 8-ft. bed.

GM is still expected to make some radical changes to its fullsize pickups in the form of a stronger aluminum-intensive construction (although not on the bed) in a bid to shed weight and improve efficiency, following the Ford F-150.

The new Sierra and Silverado will continue with refinements on the current V8 engines, but are also expected to get a diesel (as confirmed in earlier spyshots) and a mild-hybrid option on the half-ton models. Currently, the Duramax diesel comes only on heavy-duty trucks. A turbocharged V6 is also likely to join the lineup. A 10-speed automatic first seen in the Camaro ZL1 will find its way into at least some trucks at launch.

Expect to see the new Silverado and Sierra trucks in late ’18 as ’19 models.

austin hatcher foundation

The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, a member of the SEMA Cares family of charities, welcomes SEMA members to support its cause by becoming involved in foundation-related activities.

Austin Hatcher Foundation activities at both International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) races and Goodguys Rod & Custom Association events this year give the foundation an increased national presence, thanks to those organizations’ respective schedules, which afford SEMA members throughout the United States the chance to choose a volunteer opportunity in their geographic region. The foundation is an official “proud charity” of Daytona Beach, Florida-based IMSA.

In addition, volunteer opportunities for SEMA members exist at the Austin Hatcher Foundation’s regular visits to children’s hospitals; often those visits take place in markets hosting IMSA races, utilizing the foundation’s diversionary therapy program, which provides young cancer patients and their family members a respite from a fight with cancer, with specialized activities involving leisure and recreation while reducing barriers to enjoyment. The aim is to promote self-esteem, personal fulfillment and psychological, social, intellectual and spiritual/cultural well-being. Diversionary therapy is also about having fun, evidenced by the foundation’s Pinewood races at each hospital visit, with children and family members painting and racing the miniature racecars.

Goodguys Rod & Custom Association will showcase the foundation at six Goodguys events this year with the “AutoCross for Kids,” which allows event attendees to ride with professional drivers on an autocross course for a suggested donation to the foundation.

For SEMA members in the vicinity of the foundation’s headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee, opportunities also exist to volunteer at the foundation’s new automotive-themed Education Advancement Center (EAC), a state-of-the-art facility focusing on diagnosing and treating educational and functional deficits associated with pediatric cancer and its life-saving treatments. The center’s programs will include industrial arts and school tutorial programs, neuro-cognitive testing and remediation and other specialty programs designed to optimize recovery from cancer by both patients and their families.

One of the EAC’s new initiatives is a “hot rodders” program modeled after the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge national competition. The foundation seeks to form an exhibition team for the engine challenge’s national championship finals, where teams will disassemble and reassemble small-block V8 engines in a timed competition.

“We have many ways in many places for SEMA members to become involved with the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer,” said Foundation Chairman Dr. Jim Osborn. “We of course welcome that involvement. We are fortunate to have fantastic partners in SEMA, IMSA and Goodguys, plus the various children’s hospitals we visit throughout the country. We are out there doing good, important work. We urge SEMA members to help us as we continue the battle against this dreaded disease.”

Throughout 2017, the Austin Hatcher Foundation is commemorating its first decade of operation. As part of the commemoration, the foundation is amid its “Five for Ten” fundraising campaign that has resulted in a number of a 10-year commitments by donors. The organization’s “building a foundation for the future” platform is centered on continuing and expanding programs that benefit those dealing with pediatric cancer and its lasting effects.
