On the cover of the China Market Report (www.sema.org/international) is a photo of a Chrysler 300C with a fireball flame custom paint job on the hood and fenders. This picture was taken at the 2007 edition of the China International Automotive Aftermarket Industry Show, aka CIAAI, and it was the only car at the show that had this kind of custom paint.

What a difference a year makes! This year there were two aftermarket shows in March. The Beijing-based China International Auto Accessories Industry Fair 2008 (CIAAI 2008), held March 14–17, and the CIAACE 2008, Innovative Festivity for Auto Accessories and Customization Industry, also held in Beijing earlier in the month.

The growth in the number of cars with custom paint jobs at these two shows was remarkable. They were inside the venues at both shows, both as display cars in booths of various aftermarket product exhibitors, and more interestingly as ‘art gallery cars’ by custom paint manufacturers and custom paint shops. More examples of the same could be found in the outside exhibition areas and in the car parks of both shows.

Another noteworthy point was the brands of cars that had the custom paint on them. There was a broad range of vehicles with paint on them, with examples of U.S. (Cadillac and Harley), Japanese (Mitsubishi, Nissan, Suzuki), and Chinese (Chery, Geely) models being used as the medium for the custom paint jobs.

It's important to point out that car modifications, according to the national Road Transport Act, are currently not allowed in China. The law is quite vague and creates confusion as to what is or is not permitted. However, the law is specific regarding aftermarket paints. The "unauthorized" changing of the color of a vehicle is illegal, according to the 2004 law—even too many stickers is regarded as infringing this rule. Though there have been crackdowns in the past, current enforcement is nearly non-existent and business is growing despite the ban.

One of the works on display at the 2008 CIAACE Show was a GM Buick Excelle hatchback with a pair of "angel wings" molded onto the C-pillar (see photo). When asked about the response of the police to his interesting and outlandish modification, the owner laughed and said, “Oh, the local cops know me and the car very well now. They think it is really cool and don’t bother me these days."

There were similar casual responses to the same question by other exhibitors and owners of overtly stickered, painted and modified cars at both exhibitions.

The USA Eagle booth had both a custom-painted motorcycle and a new model Cadillac, both of which generated a lot of interest.

The "angel wings" on this Buick Excelle hatchback were an unexpected sight.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Mitsubishi-badged minivan boasted a beautiful undersea-themed coat of paint.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chinese models were also represented with Chery showing a minivan with a cracked earth and lava flames theme.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CIAAI 2008 had quite a few Suzuki Swifts acting as a blank canvas, with some interesting results.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALPINE had a custom-painted car to display their wares and increase brand awareness.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Citroen was the only Euro brand to get in on the act.

Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Thailand are the top markets for pickups outside the United States, with sales of these light trucks making up between 7%–20% of the overall passenger vehicle markets. In Thailand, where more than 158,000 Hilux Vigo’s were sold, pickups make up 65% of all car and light-truck sales. In Australia, the best-selling pickup was the Toyota Hilux. New European legislation on the use of chemicals, known as REACH—an abbreviation of Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals—calls for the registration of approximately 30,000 existing chemicals by manufacturer or user of any of the 30,000 chemicals in products sold in Europe. Pre-registration of existing substances began June 1, 2008, and must be completed by December 1, 2008.

Major vehicle manufacturer's associations and the automotive supply chain have formed a task force for REACH. The group has issued guidelines and complimentary documents which are available for download free of charge at  www.acea.be/index.php/news/category/reach.

Emcee Dave McClelland hosts proceedings at the 2007 SEMA Installation Banquet & Gala Fundraiser.

The annual SEMA Installation Banquet & Gala Fundraiser on Friday, July 25, serves to not only thank the association's outgoing Board members and welcome those newly elected, but also to announce the newest inductees into the SEMA Hall of Fame. This year's inductees are Raymond Bleiweis, Ben Nighthorse Campbell, Corky Coker and Bob Cook—an elite group of industry innovators and pioneers who have played a key role in the automotive specialty-equipment market.

This year's event is further underscored by a program of charitable fundraising activities that includes a golf tournament, the Pinewood Drag Race and a silent auction.

Proceeds from all fundraising benefits SEMA's two chosen charities, Childhelp and Victory Junction Gang Camp. Childhelp aids victims of child abuse and originally began receiving support from wheel manufacturers in 1994; it now garners significant contributions from a wide range of industry businesses.

Victory Junction Gang Camp, founded in 2004 by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their son Adam, has received support from the Light-Truck Accessory Alliance and others in the industry. Victory Junction uses camping experiences in its racing-themed facilities to enrich the lives of children who suffer from chronic medical conditions or illnesses.

Golf Tournament
The golf tournament begins at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25, at the Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine, California. SEMA council members are among those refining their game to challenge for the Council Cup Perpetual Trophy, a friendly competition among councils to prove who has the better hackers.

A special "Council Package" price of $2,000 (a $300 discount) is available for Council Cup competitors. The package includes four rounds of golf at the tournament and dinner for four at the annual banquet and gala charity auction, to be held that evening at the Irvine Hyatt Hotel. At least one active council member must participate in the golf tournament foursome to be eligible for this special pricing offer.

Any foursome consisting of two or more active council members will automatically be entered in the Council Cup Challenge representing their council (be sure to indicate on your registration form which council you are representing).

To register for the golf tournament, click here.

Pinewood Drag Race
The Installation Banquet & Gala Fundraiser will also feature the inaugural SEMA Pinewood Drag Race Sponsored by Fellers and DUB Publishing. The checkered flag will drop prior to the SEMA Hall of Fame recognition and fundraising activities. According to Race Director Mike Spagnola, the inaugural event will feature three race classes: Stock, Modified and Unlimited.

Those interested in building a Pinewood Drag Race car with the children from Childhelp can join SEMA for a special trip to The Village of Childhelp West in Beaumont, California, where participants can help the kids sand, paint and assemble cars that will run in the Pinewood Drag Race. Contact Mike Spagnola at mike@streetsceneeq.com for details.

For further information about the race and its rules, click here.

Ford and Harley-Davidson have been building special-edition F-Series pickups for almost a decade. Since 1999 they’ve created 11 different models. Brenda Priddy and her network of spy photographers (James Kenney, in this case) nabbed this shot of the upcoming twelfth installment in the series, the 2009 Harley-Davidson Edition Ford F-450, a dual-rear-wheel, 1.5-ton hauler with a curb weight of 8,700 lbs. and 24,500-lb. towing capacity—about 24 Harley Heritage Softail motorcycles.

A well-loaded F-450 costs about $55,000, and Priddy says she expects the HD edition F-450 to break the $60K barrier. For that kind of money, she notes, you’ll get blue tribal flames etched in the paint, chrome grille and side vents, Harley-Davidson’s name embossed in the cargo box sides, a Harley badge on the tailgate, unique wheels with Harley-Davidson shields in the center caps and a black leather interior with even more Harley badging.

No changes are expected to the F-450’s 6.4L Power Stroke diesel V8 engine.
