The U.S. House of Representatives passed two priority bills for labor in the opening days of the new Congress. The bills are titled the “Ledbetter Fair Pay Act” and the “Paycheck Fairness Act.”

The first bill would overturn a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that enforced a 180-day statute of limitations for filing a pay discrimination complaint. At issue was a lawsuit brought by Lilly Ledbetter, a 20-year supervisor at a Goodyear tire plant who discovered shortly before retirement that she was making about 15% less than 15 male counterparts performing similar work at the facility. A jury found in her favor, but the Supreme Court overturned the jury decision based on the 180-day filing restriction.

The legislation would relax the statute of limitations and clarify that discrimination could be alleged each time a paycheck is issued. The paycheck would represent a new violation based on the original discrimination. SEMA is working with the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to oppose the bill since it would open the door to frivolous litigation and expose employers to decades old, open-ended lawsuits without time limits.

The second bill would make it easier for women to prove violations of the Equal Pay Act, which generally requires equal pay for equal work. Under current law, employers can legally pay women less than men if it is justified by factors, such as more education, training or experience. The Paycheck Fairness Act would require employers to go one step further and demonstrate that paycheck inequity is not gender-based.

It would also bar employers from punishing workers who discuss salaries with their co-workers. SEMA has joined NAM and the Chamber in opposing the legislation since current law already provides effective protection against discrimination, and the bill would expose employers to increased threats of litigation.

The Senate is expected to consider the bills in the near future. President-Elect Obama intends to sign the legislation into law if it is passed by the Senate. For additional information, contact Brian Duggan at briand@sema.org.

WELCOME ABOARD: Team Penske Racing welcomed Australian Will Power to its team early this week. Power will help the team replace Helio Castroneves as it prepares for the new season while Castroneves is preparing for his highly publicized trial on tax evasion. If Castroneves is available, he will drive the No. 3 in races.

THE TITUS: Tony Schumacher added another award, claiming the Jerry Titus Memorial Trophy presented by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association. It was the second time Schumacher has won the group’s driver of the year honor in the past three seasons.

KEEPING BUSY: While he is focusing on other racing interests, former NASCAR team owner Ray Evernham, who still owns 20% of Gillett Evernham Motorsports, says he has little to do with the operation of the team. He is contractually obligated as a consultant to the team, but said recently if he were a free agent, he knows who he’d want to help. “If I was going to help somebody, for sure it would be Jeff Gordon,” said Evernham, who led Gordon to three of his four Cup championships.

MERGING: Gillett Evernham Motorsports (GEM) and Petty Holdings are in the final stages of a merger that will bring veteran team owner Richard Petty, the winningest driver in NASCAR history, into the ownership structure at GEM.

SIGNED: Mario Moraes has signed to drive the KV Racing entry in the IndyCar Series this season. Moraes drove for Dale Coyne Racing last year.

SCHUMACHER WINS SECOND JERRY TITUS AWARD; CHAMPIONS HONORED AT AARWBA ALL-AMERICA TEAM CEREMONY: Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher won the Jerry Titus Memorial Trophy this past Saturday at the 39th annual American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) All-America Team ceremony, presented by A1GP World Cup of Motorsports. Schumacher, whose world-record setting 2008 season included 15 wins in 18 final-round appearances, seven consecutive victories, 11 straight final rounds, 31 consecutive-round wins (all are NHRA records) and a fifth consecutive and sixth overall world championship, edged out NASCAR Sprint Cup titlist Jimmie Johnson by one vote to win his second Titus Trophy.

The trophy is awarded to the driver who receives the most All-America Team votes and is named in memory of the late journalist and racer. Funny Car World Champion Cruz Pedregon also received a Horsepower Trophy for his amazing season, and legendary NHRA announcer and broadcaster Dave McClelland received the Pioneer In Racing Award for his longtime dedication and achievement in NHRA Drag Racing. NHRA President Tom Compton was also in attendance to congratulate Schumacher on the award. For more information, visit www.nhra.com.

TOP FUEL CLASS STACKED FOR KRAGEN O’REILLY NHRA WINTERNATIONALS: With the official start to the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle season just three weeks away, many familiar faces and even a few new ones in the Top Fuel category are getting ready for the Kragen O’Reilly NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. One of those is fan favorite David Baca. Baca, who announced the formation of his own team weeks earlier, will begin the 2009 season in Pomona, California, and hopes to run a full schedule once sponsorship details come together.

“We’re going to test in Phoenix and come out with a vengeance in Pomona,” said Baca. Another familiar face returning to the Top Fuel class is that of Joe Hartley, whose family-owned and -operated team of Hartley Racing, with father Allen Hartley tuning the car, announced plans to run the complete 24-event NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing season in 2009.

Among the new faces in the Top Fuel class will be those of rookie sensation Spencer Massey, who will be climbing into the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Top Fuel entry for the famed Don Prudhomme Racing team and FIA European champion Andy Carter, who plans to drive Lucas Oil sponsored Top Fuel dragster at the Kragen O’Reilly NHRA Winternationals. MILLICAN/PICKENS TOP FUEL TEAM TO RUN ALL 24 NHRA FULL THROTTLE SERIES EVENTS: Top Fuel pilot Clay Millican and team owner Mark and Lauren Pickens will compete in all 24 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing series events in 2009. Lance Larsen, who helped tune the Pickens-owned dragster during the seven events the team competed in during the 2008 season, will return as crew chief for the Top Fuel team.

“We are excited this year because Mark and Lauren Pickens said we would be running all of the races,” said Millican. “That certainly was very comforting to know going into this new year. It is very comforting to know we are going to be racing.” Millican and his Hope4Sudan/Motorvation dragster will begin their bid for the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel world championship at the season opening Kragen O’Reilly NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

MPMC Long-Range Planning Meeting

The annual MPMC Long-Range Planning Meeting will be held on Friday, January 23, from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., at the Embassy Suites LAX South in El Segundo, California, which is the site of the MPMC Media Trade Conference.

“We always have the meeting on the Friday following the Media Trade Conference,” said MPMC Chairman Bill Floyd. “The 100 member companies who exhibit at the conference only need an extra night’s hotel stay to participate in the meeting, and attendance is always very good. We include a review of the conference in the agenda, so we get quite a lot of work done every year. It’s always a productive meeting.”

Anyone interested in attending should RSVP with Jim Skelly at jimsk@sema.org.

Media Trade Conference Set

The annual MPMC Media Trade Conference is set to kick off on Tuesday, January 20. This annual event brings 100 MPMC-member manufacturers together with upwards of 200 media representatives for three days of face-to-face meetings. Unlike other trade events, the meetings are dedicated to providing and gathering editorial content. Ad sales are prohibited from the meeting agendas. A possible 42, half-hour long meetings are scheduled over the three-day event, and many media report that they get a full 12 months' worth of technical material at this single event.

“We really want to thank all the participants at this year’s event,” said MPMC Chairman Bill Floyd. “No one has to mention the economic crunch we are all feeling. To have so many exhibitors and media committed to the Media Trade Conference is an indicator of the importance of the event itself and the dedication of our members and the media. A heartfelt thank you from MPMC to everyone involved.”

Hummer sales suffered a 50% decline in 2008 compared to 2007 levels as consumers turned away from trucks, SUVs and large family sedans.

Looking for ways to reduce costs in 2009, automakers are trimming model offerings and canceling concepts and near-production concepts. Pontiac recently axed its G8 ST sport truck concept, while Honda canceled plans for a 2010 S2000.

Light-truck production schedules have also been cut and factories idled. Ford shut down its Michigan Truck Plant in late 2008 for retooling and also plans the closure of plants in Kentucky, Minnesota and Mexico in a shift away from trucks and SUVs to small cars like the Fiesta and Focus.

Compounding the automaker’s troubles are miserable sales (down 18% in 2008 from 2007, according to Ward’s Auto) and a squeeze on consumer credit. The credit market shows some signs of thaw—General Motors’ financial arm GMAC recently received direct government funding, and CNW Research notes that 81% of prime new-vehicle loans were approved—but consumers have shifted their focus.

The vehicles bought and sold in 2008 may have a direct impact on performance parts and accessory manufacturers. Some brands may not survive 2009, or at least with the same ownership. AutoPacific reports that Saab, Volvo, Saturn and Hummer have very uncertain futures.

Hummer in particular has been hit hard. Sales are down more than 50% from 2007 to 2008. Hummer accessory parts have followed suit; in 2005, manufacturers entered 14 new Hummer parts in the SEMA Show New Products Showcase. In 2008, that number shrank to four.

This isn’t to say trucks are done. Nissan’s Titan was up 108% and Chevy’s Silverado was up 13% in December, although both offered substantial incentives.

As the mix of vehicles on the road shift towards smaller, more frugal vehicles, we can expect to see similar shifts in the specialty-equipment industry.

Chevrolet’s Corvette has been a perennial favorite among gearheads for more than half a century. From classic models to modern editions, enthusiasts continue to search for the latest high-performance and restyling products for this iconic sports car.

SEMA Show exhibitors brought 30 customized examples of the classic coupe to the 2008 SEMA Show, and 58 Corvette-specific products have been displayed during the past four shows. Registration data from Experian Automotive shows that nearly 750,000 Vettes, ranging from 1967–2009 models, are scattered throughout the United States, with heavy concentrations in California, Florida, Texas, New York, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.

SEMA research periodically profiles owners of vehicles when a significant amount of information can be obtained for a specific model, demographic or other notable characteristic. These sample groups often paint an accurate portrait of the remaining body of owners in that automotive profile. In this case, submissions from the latest Automotive Lifestyles Survey catalog a detailed snapshot of Corvette owners.

Responses to the survey include both vehicle and lifestyle data. Corvette owners are passionate about customizing and presenting their vehicles and the automotive lifestyle; 87% claimed to have purchased a custom part or accessory within the past 12 months. Compared with other sports car owners, Corvette enthusiasts are more likely to purchase accessories and electronics (perhaps due to the car’s inherent athletic ability from the factory).

The top product purchased, by roughly nine out of 10 people, were automotive polishes/waxes, followed by exhaust upgrades (54.6%). Nearly half of the top 25 products that Vette enthusiasts purchase are performance-related, including intakes, brake upgrades and performance tires.

One in four Corvette owners modify their engine control systems, valvetrains and electrical systems, while the most popular accessories include floor mats, license plate frames and alarm systems. Corvette owners who make purchases of specialty equipment often do so within a short span of time after obtaining the vehicle.

Nearly seven out of 10 (69%) owners surveyed made their first purchase during the first two months of ownership. And split nearly in half, Vette owners buy from both traditional brick-and-mortar outlets, including from mail order, installers and at shows, while 51% purchase from Internet retail.

Other demographic data on Corvette owners includes:
