DRIVERS PREPARE FOR CHARLOTTE AND SECOND STOP IN NHRA COUNTDOWN TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP: With just one event complete in the six-race 2010 NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs and the recently completed Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, the excitement and tension couldn’t be bigger in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Now the series heads to Charlotte, North Carolina, and zMAX Dragway for the second stop of the Countdown to the Championship—the third annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals.

Two drivers particularly excited for the stop are both sitting in the second spot in their category point standings—Top Fuel’s Cory McClenathan and Funny Car’s Jack Beckman. McClenathan enters the event not only the defending event winner, but the defending Top Fuel winner at zMAX, winning both the 2009 event as well as the inaugural NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in March. With a win this Sunday, McClenathan could become the first driver in the track’s three-year history to win three straight events.

“To go into a race track knowing we’ve had the kind of success we’ve had at zMAX Dragway is a big deal,” said McClenathan. “It takes a lot off my shoulders. We’ve won there two-wide and four-wide, and now we’re going back for the Countdown.”

nhra2 nhra3

McClenathan trails Top Fuel points leader Larry Dixon by a mere 46 points, but Dixon is riding a hot-hand of 10 wins in 10 final-round appearances for the season heading into zMAX Dragway. In Funny Car, Beckman currently sits just 60 points behind leader John Force but has been riding a wave of success for most of the second half of the season. Since his last visit to zMAX Dragway in March for the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals, Beckman has picked up three runner-up finishes and five semifinal round appearances. Beckman is no stranger to success at zMAX Dragway either. He won the inaugural event in 2008 and could become the first Funny Car driver to win two events at zMAX Dragway.

“I really love going to Charlotte and running in front of a lot of diehard NASCAR fans,” said Beckman. “Our goal is never to take fans from any other sport, but our goal is to build fans that are fans of other sports.”

Beckman will have plenty of competition, though, including recent U.S. Nationals winner Ashley Force Hood, who is currently fourth in the point standings, and defending event winner and world champion Robert Hight, who currently sits in the fifth spot. In Pro Stock, Mike Edwards hopes to be the first driver to win three Charlotte races in a row. Edwards dominated the 2009 event, picking up almost every point he could from the event, then went on to win his first world championship at season’s end.

This year, Pro Stock veterans Allen Johnson, Jeg Coughlin and Greg Anderson will look to end Edwards' dominating defense of his title by picking up their first wins at zMAX Dragway. Pro Stock Motorcycle defending world champion Hector Arana is hoping to defend his event win in Charlotte and pick up his first win of the season, but current points leader Andrew Hines, who set the national record for time at the recently completed Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, looks to continue his success with a win at zMAX Dragway. But don’t count out NHRA 4-Wide winner Matt Smith who is hungry for another win at his hometown track.

Tickets for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway are still available by calling 800/455-3267 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

LOOKING TO BRING NEW BUYERS TO SEMA THIS YEAR?

A free, new tool called Exhibitor Invites enables exhibitors to create their own customized e-mail campaign to an unlimited number of buyers and prospects. Program features include:
• Discounts, incentives, company information and new-product announcements.

• Upload buyer and prospect files to Exhibitor Invites' bonded and licensed third-party e-mail service, Global IntelliSystems. Each list is 100% secure and will not be shared with anyone (not even SEMA).

• Company name, logo, booth number and customized message is included as part of the three separate HTML e-mails. Exhibitors approve the message and the schedule while SEMA pays for the whole thing.

The exhibitor who generates the most qualified buyers by October 1, 2010, receives $25,000 worth of on-site signage for the Show. To get started, click here. Your username is your e-mail address and your password is sema2010.

Contact Shelly Purcell at 319/521-3340 with any questions about using the Exhibitor Invites program. If you have any problems using the system, send an e-mail to services@exhibitorinvites.com.

ORDER YOUR LEAD RETRIEVAL MACHINE

SEMA has partnered once again with CompuSystems to provide you with tools for managing the entire lead retrieval process. Embedded within a bar code on each badge is a great deal of key information about that attendee. CompuSystems offers a suite of lead management products and services designed to help exhibitors quickly and easily capture and qualify leads on the Show floor. Available are all types of lead retrieval needs: a handheld unit, a desktop unit with a paper printout, and a computer-based system for the more advanced user. HAVE YOU REGISTERED YOUR BOOTH PERSONNEL?

Don’t forget to register the people who are going to staff the booth—they will need a badge. Registration is available by clicking here. Free badges are available to exhibitors based on the size of their booth. Additional badges required over the allocated amount are $25 per badge. Exhibitor registration onsite is $25 per badge, regardless of any remaining allotment. Unique individual e-mail addresses are required to complete registration for booth personnel. In order to receive a badge, each registrant is required to confirm their e-mail address once registration is complete. If the e-mail is not confirmed prior to the badge mailing, the badges will be held for pick up at the Show.

If you did not receive your exhibitor registration password via e-mail, please contact customer service at SEMA-Reg@convexx.com or call 702/450-7662, ext. 120.

The Wheels & Accessories SEMA Show section obtains the highest percentage of returning companies than any other market-specific exhibit area of the Show.
As the world’s premier automotive specialty-products trade show, the 2010 SEMA Show, to be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from November 2–5, 2010, attracts more than 100,000 industry leaders from more than 100 countries and also provides a unique opportunity for buyers and exhibitors to connect.

The Show covers the entire realm of the specialty-equipment industry and is comprised of 12 categories: Business Services; Global Tire Expo—Powered by TIA; Hot Rod Alley; Mobile Electronics & Technology; Paint, Body & Equipment; Powersports & Utility Vehicles; Racing & Performance; Restoration Marketplace; Restyling & Car Care Accessories; Tools & Equipment; Trucks, SUVs & Off-Road; and Wheels & Accessories.

Each will be highlighted separately every week in SEMA eNews. This week’s category is Wheels & Accessories. So far, 121 wheels and accessories companies—of which 24 are first-timers—are exhibiting in the South Hall’s lower level.

Wheels are often the first product consumers install on their vehicles. First introduced to the United States market around 1977, specialty/performance tires often follow the custom-wheel market. What started out as a hot-rod or racing-only item has now gone mainstream so that every vehicle on the road is a potential candidate for custom wheels. In fact, about a third of all new-vehicle buyers modify their vehicle by adding custom wheels. Consumers who upgrade the wheels on their vehicles will usually also purchase higher-performance tires.

The Wheels & Accessories Show section obtains the highest percentage of returning companies than any other market-specific exhibit area of the Show. Exhibitors typically put the future of wheels on display to capture the attention of buyers. Driven primarily by aesthetics, this section features the latest innovations in covers, plating and wheel accessories.

The percentage of cars produced with custom wheels grew from 40.3% in 1996 to 67.7% in 2007, while light trucks grew from 70.9% to 79% during the same time period. Retail sales of custom wheels increased 100% from $2.340 billion in 2002 to more than $4.686 billion in 2007.

Among preregistered buyers of the 2009 SEMA Show, 16% said wheels were among their top product interests, while 23% of international buyers selected agreed. Forty-two percent of all preregistered buyers and 37% of international buyers carried wheels. Ten percent of trucks and accessories preregistered buyers selected wheels as a top product interest. Thirty-eight percent of buyers sold to the wheels market.
