Also attending the event were SEMA Congressional Affairs Manager Dan Sadowski (left), Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council Select Committee member and Holley Performance Products Regional Sales Manager John Sonnefeldt (ninth from right) and the Congressman’s brother, Frank Manzullo (second from left).

The Congressional District Site Visit at Hopperstad Customs became an impromptu car show and cruise, as several local automotive enthusiasts drove their collector cars to the event.

Each August, members of Congress spend the month in their districts meeting select businesses and organizations to learn more about how policies crafted in Washington directly affect homegrown industries. These events can help provide solutions to issues specific to local congressional districts and businesses while helping to establish long-term working relationships between SEMA members and their elected officials. At one such event, SEMA members and enthusiasts gathered at Hopperstad Customs in Belvidere, Illinois, to tour the facility and talk about cars and the economy with their federal representative. Their special guest, Representative Don Manzullo, is a lifelong car enthusiast from Rockford in northern Illinois and now represents these local communities in the U.S. Congress.

Owned and operated by Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Select Committee member Kerry Hopperstad, Hopperstad Customs has been serving the custom car and hot-rod community since 1968. It specializes in louvers, rear suspension setups, front axle conversions, disc brake conversions, chassis restoration, body reconstruction, interior/dashboard fabrication, electrical wiring, powerplant buildup and custom concept car building.

“Having worked on projects with his brother Frank, including his ’32 Ford, I was happy to have Representative Manzullo visit my shop,” Kerry Hopperstad said. “Our area is well known for having many automotive businesses and hobbyists, and I am pleased that Manzullo took time to visit with fellow car buffs to discuss the important issues. Hosting the event at my shop provided a great backdrop for the Congressman to talk cars and policy in a setting he was familiar with. This Congressional Site Visit event was beneficial for everyone involved.”

Representative Manzullo, a Republican, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992. Representative Manzullo serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee. From 2001–2006, he was chairman of the House Committee on Small Business and currently serves as founder and co-chairman of the House Manufacturing Caucus, a leading voice in urging the United States to develop a more comprehensive policy to support its domestic manufacturing base.

Representative Manzullo’s visit to Hopperstad Customs was a natural fit. He is a founding member of the SEMA-supported Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus, which recognizes contributions made by the specialty parts and motorsports industries to the U.S. economy. Representative Manzullo is a classic car enthusiast who knows firsthand the issues facing the industry. He also has a family connection: His brother, Frank, who attended the event at Hopperstad, played a role in helping enact SEMA’s model street rod/custom vehicle bill into law in Illinois in 2002 as a member of Rockford’s Unique Street Rod Club.

During his visit, Representative Manzullo discussed custom car construction and the economic outlook for the specialty-equipment industry. Hopperstad provided a comprehensive overview of the process by which he obtains classic car frames and creates one-of-a kind collector automobiles tailored to the needs of individual enthusiasts.

Illinois has a strong tradition of hot-rod and classic car enthusiasts, and
several local hobbyists attended the event as well, driving their classics to Hopperstad’s shop. Representative Manzullo spent a good part of his visit asking questions and learning more about each collector vehicle, many of which had been fabricated at Hopperstad Customs or other local shops.

After the shop tour, Representative Manzullo convened a roundtable discussion about current issues facing small businesses and the challenges for small manufacturers.

Representative Don Manzullo, a collector car enthusiast himself, got behind the wheel of one of Kerry Hopperstad’s (left) custom builds at his shop in Belvidere, Illinois.
“Throughout my time representing the 16th District of Illinois, I have been a staunch supporter and promoter of American manufacturing,” Representative Manzullo said. “I commend Hopperstad Customs for their part in the vibrant manufacturing community in northern Illinois, and I am proud to represent them. The recently introduced Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2011, of which I am an original co-sponsor, will alleviate some of the regulatory burdens placed on Hopperstad and other custom automobile shops by establishing a program through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that will address the unique safety and financial issues associated with limited-production custom vehicle manufacturers. This bill would resource several hundred jobs back to the United States if enacted.”

Local SEMA members and enthusiasts in attendance had an opportunity to ask Representative Manzullo questions about current events and plans for congressional action for the remainder of the year. Manzullo said that he remains committed to advocating on behalf of small businesses in his district and throughout the nation while promoting domestic manufacturing. The visit provided a unique opportunity for both SEMA members and industry enthusiasts to meet with their federal representative.

The Congressional District Site Visit Program is overseen by SEMA’s government affairs office in Washington, D.C. The program pairs SEMA-member companies with their member of Congress for facility tours and business roundtables in their home districts. These visits provide an opportunity for SEMA members to meet face-to-face with their Washington representatives or senators and discuss issues impacting the company and its workers. They help establish working relationships that can eventually translate into legislative successes in Washington.

If you are interested in hosting an event at your facility with your federal elected officials, please e-mail Congressional Affairs Manager Dan Sadowski at dans@sema.org or call 202/783-6007 x19.

Re-Tooling Your Online Reviews Strategy

New Tech and Added Punch for 2012

INTERNET

Search-engine Bing is countering Google’s +1 recommendation button with a similarly tooled “Bing Bar.”

New free tools from Google, Bing and Twitter are making it virtually effortless for companies to solicit a positive review from a satisfied customer and then instantly redistribute that review to the customer’s online social circles. The technology—essentially a recommendation button that is clicked to indicate an endorsement—can be added to any company webpage or product page in a matter of seconds.

Newest to the pack is the Google +1 recommendation button, which rolled out in June and currently appears on more than a million websites, according to Vic Gundotra, Google senior vice president of engineering. Under the recommendation service, a simple click on the +1 button authorizes Google to run a personal endorsement under Google search-engine returns associated with the company or product, under Google ads for that company, or on the recommended company’s website. If the endorsement comes from a member of the new Google+ social network, the recommendation even gets sweeter: For those thumbs-ups, Google is also authorized to run a photo of the member along with the hurrah.

“This isn’t social simply for the sake of social,” said Pehr Luedtke, CEO of PowerReviews, a popular online review platform that has incorporated the +1 button into its own reviews platform. “It’s a way to drive real business results by leveraging the power of recommendations made between friends and peers.”

To add any or all of the reviews buttons to your own website, check out the
following links:

Bazaarvoice CEO Brett Hurt agrees. Bazaarvoice is another online reviews platform provider that has added the +1 button to its products. “The next evolution of social brings our friends and peers into every decision we make, and we’re excited to partner again with Google to allow consumers to interact with leading brands through search in ways never possible before,” Hurt said.

Web surfers using the service need to be signed into a Google account to see and click on the +1 button. If they’re logged into Google Mail, YouTube, Google Apps or the new Google+ social network, for example, they’ll be able to see and click on +1 buttons.

While Google reserves the right to display a +1 recommendation to any Google user, Gundotra indicates that the search giant is most interested in showcasing the endorsements to friends and acquaintances in the reviewer’s social circles on Google. Currently, that translates into the social connections the reviewer has on the Google+ social network, Gmail or Google Talk chat list, Google Contacts, Google Reader and Google Buzz.

Not surprisingly, Bing and Facebook have decided to partner to promote a rival recommendation program that’s just as easy to use. Dubbed the “Bing Bar,” the feature enables anyone logged into Bing to use a universal Facebook “Like” button to endorse a company or product page to friends on Facebook.

Still another similar recommendation service is available from Twitter, which offers a free “Tweet” button that also can be added to any website in a matter of seconds. The beauty of Twitter’s button is that a web marketer need not be a member of Twitter—or even understand how Twitter works—in order to derive promotional benefit from the button. Simply embed the button on key pages of your website, and Twitter users will handle the rest by clicking the button and instantly tweeting to their “followers” about your company, product or service.

SEMA HERITAGE

Showmanship, Circa 1971

By Drew Hardin
Photo Courtesy Source Interlink Media Archives

How do you get your share of attention at the SEMA Show when foot traffic is shoulder-to-shoulder thick? Some gimmicks these days have gotten pretty outrageous but—as you can see in this photo from the 1971 Show—SEMA showmanship is a decades-long tradition.

Petersen Publishing Company photographer Pat Brollier was walking the aisles at the Anaheim Convention Center during pre-Show setup and just couldn’t resist this sight. If the lovely model didn’t catch your eye, and you missed Uncle Sam ’cause he’s way up there on his stilts, Al Unser’s Indy 500-winning Parnelli Jones Colt would surely draw you into the US Wheels booth.

When Brollier took this photo in January 1971, the SEMA Show was just a few years beyond its humble beginnings under the Dodger Stadium bleachers. Yet it was growing quickly, with hundreds of vendors and thousands of buyers, jobbers, media and other attendees turning out for this edition.

In 1972, it would be held for the first time alongside the APAA show; and not long after, in 1977, the SEMA Show would grow to the point that it needed a much bigger venue: Las Vegas.

WHO’S IT GOING TO BE? FIRST- TO FIFTH-PLACE DRIVERS ALL HAVE CHANCE FOR FULL THROTTLE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: Exciting. Thrilling. Heart-pounding. These are all words that can describe the battle for the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing world championships in both Top Fuel and Funny Car as the series makes the final stop of 2011, at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals this weekend at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. The reason for the excitement? For the first time since the NHRA Countdown was introduced in 2007, five drivers in Top Fuel and eight drivers in Funny Car all have a mathematical chance to win the world championship at the season-ending event. In Top Fuel, the talk heading into the event has been all about points leader Spencer Massey, second-place driver Del Worsham and third-place driver Antron Brown. But with fourth-place driver and defending world champion Larry Dixon 44 points out of the lead, the top four in the category are all within range of racing to the world title.

“I believe when it’s all said and done, I’m going to have to win in Pomona [to win the championship],” said Worsham. “The competition out there is awful tough, and everybody runs pretty well. There are great drivers and everybody peaks at different times, and basically I feel good about going into Pomona right now with a win in Las Vegas and a brand-new car that runs great and a team that’s been in this position before.”

In Funny Car, while first-, second- and third-place drivers Matt Hagan, Jack Beckman and Cruz Pedregon are within 26 points of each other, regular-season points leader Mike Neff sits 34 points out of the lead, 2009 world champion Robert Hight is 71 points out and Ron Capps is 72 points back in sixth place.

“As a seven-year-old kid when I went to Orange County International Raceway for my first race, I thought these cars were the coolest things on the planet,” said Beckman. “I never would have dreamed I’d get a paycheck to drive one of them and contend for the championship, so this is all good for me.”

2010, FORCE COMPLETES COMBACK, WINS 15TH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: After being critically injured in a high-speed accident in 2007 in Dallas, Force came full circle when he raced to his record-breaking 15th world championship in 2010. Force powered his Castrol GTX High-Mileage Ford Mustang to wins at the final two races of the season to move past points leader Matt Hagan and become the oldest world champion in NHRA history at the age of 61. Force’s record-setting championship is one of the five top moments in NHRA history that fans can still vote on to determine No. 1.
