Christian Robinson: For starters, I was born and raised in South Carolina. As kids, my friends and I would spend Friday nights getting into trouble at Oglethorpe Speedway Park just over the state line in Pooler, Georgia. I ended up going to college at the University of Miami, where I started my career in politics. After helping Florida Senator Bill Nelson (his collector vehicle was the Space Shuttle!) get re-elected twice, I was ready for a new adventure.

SN: What made you want to join the SEMA team?

CR: This may sound corny, but family. Whether it was my grandfather teaching me to change the oil in his ’78 turbodiesel Mercedes-Benz or taking rides in my dad’s ’64.5 cascade-green Ford Mustang, some of my fondest memories involve cars. As the son of small-business owners, I have a great respect for how hard SEMA members work. So as soon as the government affairs team approached me about the job, I knew SEMA was where I wanted to be.

SN: You have a background in campaigns. Why should SEMA members pay attention to politics?

CR: People are fed up with Washington’s antics. Frankly, I am, too. But the reason to pay attention is pretty simple: It’s the business-savvy thing to do. Whether it’s banning the sale of E-15, tax reform or job creation, there’s a lot going on in Washington, D.C., that will affect SEMA members’ businesses. SEMA is making tremendous inroads on these issues and others as we claim our seat at the table. We simply can’t afford to sit idly by while others determine the future of our industry.

SN: How does SEMA PAC fit into the equation?

CR: One of the things I hear over and over again is that one person can’t fix the dysfunction alone. I understand that the decisions made in Washington, D.C., may seem like they are out of your control, but they really aren’t. At its very core, SEMA PAC is about our members coming together to speak in a collective voice. The more people who join, the louder our voice and the greater our ability to impact change.

SN: How does SEMA PAC work?

CR: Whether it’s the laws or the people who make them, things in our nation’s capital are always changing. SEMA PAC helps us keep pace by supporting the candidates and lawmakers who understand the importance of what SEMA
members do.

SN: Who joins SEMA PAC?

CR: Any SEMA member can join. It doesn’t matter if you have five employees or 500, it’s in everyone’s best interest to get involved and stay active.

SN: How does a SEMA member join SEMA PAC?

CR: SEMA PAC has to obtain permission from each member company before we can ask for contributions. I know that sounds complicated, but it’s not. The form takes seconds to fill out. You are then “PAC Approved.” With a greater number of business owners willing to stand up to government intervention in their businesses, more and more members are becoming “PAC Approved.” I urge everyone to head to www.SEMApac.com and join!

SN: Does becoming “PAC Approved” mean somebody has to contribute?

CR: Never. It simply allows us to keep you in the loop on how we’re fighting for you in Washington, D.C.

SN: Why should somebody support SEMA PAC?

CR: My mother always told me that it’s rude to answer a question with another question, but why wouldn’t somebody want to support SEMA PAC? It helps SEMA members educate lawmakers who help them grow their businesses. So really, it’s not just a personal contribution, but an investment in your company. And it’s one of the easiest investments you can make.

CR: Through SEMA PAC, members have the opportunity to build relationships with not only their own elected representatives but also a number of other powerful lawmakers. Whenever you have a problem or want to make your opinion heard, you’ve got fellow car guys and gals in Washington that have your back.

CR: This year is the 10th anniversary of SEMA PAC. Traditionally, a 10-year anniversary is marked by tin, so we are asking everyone to fill our tin cup with $10 contributions (or higher!). Anyone who helps out will get a limited-edition anniversary lapel pin as a thank you. I look forward to wearing mine at the SEMA Show and at member gatherings throughout the year.

Michael Kunzman is the president and founder of Michael A. Kunzman and Associates, headquartered in Commerce Township, Michigan. Kunzman is an eight-year member of the SEMA PAC President’s Club, and his company was honored with the SEMA Rep Agency of the Year Award for 2010.

“SEMA PAC impacts legislation that could adversely affect the rights of both enthusiasts and the manufacturers of performance products,” Kunzman said.

CAPPS SECURES FOURTH WIN AT SONOMA RACEWAY; LANGDON, NOBILE AND ARANA JR. TAKE HOME NHRA SONOMA NATIONALS VICTORIES: Behind the wheel of his NAPA Dodge Charger Funny Car, Ron Capps continued his mastery of Sonoma Raceway when he defeated John Force for his fourth win in wine country. The win moved him to second in Funny Car points just behind his teammate Matt Hagan.

"You're not just racing any car in the final—you're racing John Force," Capps said. "It can be intimidating to a lot of people. This place has a lot of great memories. We have a big NAPA presence here and we're the only Don Schumacher Racing car in the final. No pressure, right?"

In Top Fuel, Shawn Langdon defeated close friend and high school classmate Morgan Lucas in the finals, and Vincent Nobile knocked off Jeg Coughlin Jr. in Pro Stock. TORRENCE, S. GRAY RACE INTO O'REILLY AUTO PARTS NHRA NORTHWEST NATIONALS FOCUSED ON RESULTS: Two veterans of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series come into the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals with momentum propelling them into the conclusion of the Western Swing. In Top Fuel, Steve Torrence comes into the event with one win, one No. 1 qualifying position and twice starting in the second position in 2013. Torrence, the defending event winner, is 10th in points and is battling to secure a berth in the Countdown to the Championship.

"This team has been in that mode for several races now," Torrence said. "We've been digging deep and scratching and clawing to try to get every point we possible can." Gray in Pro Stock is fifth in points and is on the verge of getting his first win of the season. His three runner-up finishes is a single-season record for the four-year veteran who is constantly working on improving his driving skills. "It's really going to be about me getting more consistent on the starting line," Gray said. "I just need to get up on the wheel and do a better job. I've got a great car, great team, and if I do my job to the best of my ability, there isn't any reason why we shouldn't have a win or two before the end of the season."

RACERS CONTINUE TO EARN BERTHS FOR 2013 COUNTDOWN TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP: Two more racers earned berths into the Countdown to the Championship at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals. In Top Fuel, Spencer Massey joined his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tony Schumacher and points leader Shawn Langdon as racers locked into a position. Massey clinched after qualifying for the event. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, 2007 Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Matt Smith gained entry after racing to a runner-up finish. Three races remain for racers to enter into the Countdown to the Championship, and racers will battle for every point available in the events.

Names like Don Prudhomme, Shirley Muldowney, Bob Glidden and Don Garlits have cemented themselves in racing lore by winning at this event. Tony Schumacher is the defending and nine-time Top Fuel champion and will look to break his tie with Glidden to become the winningest driver of the event. Mike Neff (Funny Car), Dave Connolly (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) wrote their names in the record books as they also took home wins during the 2012 event. “It was a good weekend out here for this entire team. The car has definitely turned the corner. People are pushing and working hard. Everyone was happy to go out today in the first round and put up our best pass of the weekend. We were building toward that. TAKE HOME NHRA SONOMA NATIONALS VICTORIES: Behind the wheel of his NAPA Dodge Charger Funny Car, Ron Capps continued his mastery of Sonoma Raceway when he defeated John Force for his fourth win in wine country. GRAY RACE INTO O'REILLY AUTO PARTS NHRA NORTHWEST NATIONALS FOCUSED ON RESULTS: Two veterans of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series come into the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals with momentum propelling them into the conclusion of the Western Swing. In Top Fuel, Steve Torrence comes into the event with one win, one No. 1 qualifying position and twice starting in the second position in 2013. Torrence, the defending event winner, is 10th in points and is battling to secure a berth in the Countdown to the Championship.

"This team has been in that mode for several races now," Torrence said. "We've been digging deep and scratching and clawing to try to get every point we possible can." Gray in Pro Stock is fifth in points and is on the verge of getting his first win of the season. His three runner-up finishes is a single-season record for the four-year veteran who is constantly working on improving his driving skills. "It's really going to be about me getting more consistent on the starting line," Gray said. "I just need to get up on the wheel and do a better job. I've got a great car, great team, and if I do my job to the best of my ability, there isn't any reason why we shouldn't have a win or two before the end of the season."

Frank Wins Tire Rack ProSolo Regular Season Finale at Toledo
Jason Frank, of Racine, Wisconin, won his first Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Super Challenge at the Toledo (Ohio) Express Airport. Frank (Street Touring Compact, ProParts USA/Team Undercoat Racing Honda Civic) headed into the Super Challenge after setting his class-winning times during Sunday’s Heat Six. His combined score of 63.483 seconds sealed his class’s top qualifying spot by 0.498-second. Laura Campbell, of Madison, Alabama, also took home top honors, winning the Ladies Challenge.

Seeded 23rd overall, Frank met Kraig Kippel (Street Touring Sport, Stranoparts.com Mazda Miata) in the first round. He defeated Kippel and took on the best in Stock/Street Index 2 Alex Shchipkov (SoloRacer.com/MonoBalls.com BMW 330CI) in the second round. Frank took the win over Shchipkov, advancing to the quarterfinal round.

In the quarterfinals, Frank beat yet another class top qualifyier, besting Tom O’Gorman (Stock/Street Index 4, Full Throttle Indoor Karting/G-Fab Chevrolet Corvette) to move forward to the semis. There, Frank met Ian Baker (Street Touring Sports, Toyo Tires/Strano Parts/SSC Tint Honda CRX SI). Following a win, Frank moved to the finals where he met with Jeremiah McClintock (Kart Modified, Nut Pack Racing!! Honda Renspeed). Frank would prove too much for McClintock, as he took his first Super Challenge win.

The next stop for The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo series is the Lincoln Air Park. The finale of the 2013 campaign is slated to start August 31, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Bully Dog took to the track this past weekend, lining up to pull at the United Pullers event in Tremonton, Utah. Both the "Doctor" EcoBoost and “Blackout” Cummins were on-site and ready to hook up to the sled. Doctor driver Austin George went into the race undefeated, taking first at every event he has entered this year. He finished the race with a 325’ 10” pull, decisively putting him in first place. Chris Kendall took his Blackout sled to a final distance of 312’, the best of the night by six feet.

Marty Hart Takes First Place at Glen Helen
Arriving at Glen Helen Raceway for the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, presented by GEICO rounds nine and 10, Marty Hart and his ReadyLIFT Off Road Suspension/Maxxis Tire/GearUp2Go.com Pro 2 team delivered a dominating performance on both Saturday and Sunday night under the lights.

When the green flag flew in front of 17 Pro 2 trucks, it would be Hart who would immediately nab the lead spot. Hart would lead every lap of the race, but it would be the final caution flag that would allow Bryce Menzies to get a run on Hart coming to the white flag. Menzies wouldn't relinquish the lead in the final lap, resulting in Hart having to accept a second-place finish.

Sunday evening, Hart took the lead from the drop of the green flag and never looked back. Brian Deegan managed to get a fender alongside Hart only a few times. Hart celebrated from the top spot on the podium while clutching both the 1st place trophy as well as once again setting fast lap of the race.

	As a new spokesperson for WyoTech, Jessi Combs will represent the school at selected events and speak to students at campuses across the country.

Jessi Combs Named WyoTech Spokesperson
Jessi Combs was named WyoTech’s official spokesperson in May. After graduating from WyoTech's Laramie campus in 2004, Combs became a successful fabricator and television personality. She will represent the school at selected events and speak to students at WyoTech campuses across the country. Combs was a guest fabricator on the set of "Overhaulin’," and was soon hired as the co-host of "Xtreme 4x4," part of the Powerblock series on Spike TV. She held this position for four years and 90+ episodes. As official spokesperson, Combs has already inspired hundreds of WyoTech students at the Laramie campus in June of this year. During her visit, she demonstrated her welding skills, signed autographs and spoke about her experiences in the automotive and racing industries. On September 28, Combs will visit the WyoTech campus in Blairsville, Pennsylvania, where she’ll deliver her message and continue to raise awareness of the value of a WyoTech automotive technical education.

Design Engineering Provides Products, Training for Ohio Technical College Students 
Design Engineering Inc. has partnered with Ohio Technical College to help students prepare for a successful career in automotive and powersports industries. Design Engineering is sharing company expertise and product resources through the partnership. DEI staff Mike Zenone, business development manager and Boom Mat product manager; Steve Garrett, DEI art director and media coordinator; and Dan Stark, DEI technical support and customer service representative, spent time at Ohio Technical College training the college’s instructors on several of DEI’s products.

Melissa Scoles was promoted to president for QA1. Prior to the move, she was most recently the company's executive vice president.

QA1 promoted Melissa Scoles to company president. CEO and founder Jim Jordan stated, “QA1 is fortunate to have someone with Melissa’s broad skill sets to assume this position within the company.” Scoles has been associated with QA1 since she was a teenager, as Jordan is her father. She started at the company folding boxes and worked the company’s trade shows during college. She then worked through every department at the company, taking a break to get outside experience and attain her MBA from Carlson School of Management. She studied in both Europe and Asia while earning her degrees. When she returned in January of 2011, she joined the QA1 team again as vice president of marketing, to be quickly promoted to executive vice president and now president.

Kevin Borchert Named Mitchell 1 Automotive Technology Outstanding Student
Kevin Borchert from Racine, Wisconsin, was named the 2013 Mitchell 1 Automotive Technology Outstanding Student during the recent during the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT) conference. Mitchell 1 recognizes one U.S. or Canadian high school senior each year for outstanding achievement in automotive technology and auto shop repair scholastics. Borchert received a $2,500 scholarship, a check for $500 and roundtrip airfare and accommodations for himself and a guest to attend the NACAT conference. Borchert graduated from Case High School in Racine, Wisconsin, in May 2012. He is currently enrolled in the automotive technician associate degree program at the Milwaukee Area Technical College and is expected to finish in October 2014. His ultimate career goal is to work as a professional technician at an aftermarket repair facility that installs and repairs performance equipment.

Donaldson Company Adds Andrew Cecere to Board of Directors
Donaldson Company Inc. has appointed Andrew Cecere to its board of directors, effective September 27. The addition of Cecere brings the Donaldson board of directors to 11 members. Cecere is the vice chairman and financial officer of U.S. Bancorp, a position he has held since 2007. Previously, he served as vice chairman of wealth management and securities services of U.S. Bancorp. "Andy has a great track record of managing large multi-division banking businesses," said Donaldson CEO Bill Cook. "Andy's extensive banking expertise and financial acumen will provide us with valuable counsel and perspective to help us achieve our strategic growth plans. We are very excited to have him join our board."
