2019 SEMA Show Preview: New Products Showcase

The Latest Product Offerings for 2019 and Beyond

The eye-catching project vehicles may generate the most buzz on the Show floor, but at the SEMA Show, there’s no better place to assess the state of the automotive aftermarket—and to stay abreast of all the latest tech and trends—than the New Products Showcase, located on the Skybridge between the Central and South Halls. Considered a first stop by many attendees, the Showcase is open for extended hours—8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. daily—to accommodate the needs of exhibitors and buyers alike who may be unable to visit during regular Show hours. It’s also next door to the Media Center, making it convenient for members of the press who need to make the most of their Show time.

Roughly 3,000 new products, arranged by category, are entered into the Showcase each year, and 2019 promises to offer an equally diverse range of offerings for virtually every enthusiast market segment. The Showcase can also connect exhibitors and buyers thanks to scanning tools that are available at booths around the Showcase. Using a scanner, attendees can obtain detailed descriptions and company contact information for each product, which can be printed on site for use during the week. What follows is a sampling of the newest products from 2019 SEMA Show exhibitors, and a glimpse into what this year’s Showcase holds in store for attendees.

Booth #20013 Design Engineering Inc. released its 7-in. silver Protect-A-Boots to safeguard sparkplug wires and boots from excessive heat generated by a vehicle’s engine, exhaust manifold and headers, which can cause those components to burn, harden or crack, which in turn can result in arcing, misfiring and even full ignition failure. Centerforce Clutches Booth #23813 Centerforce introduces its DYAD XDS twin-disc clutch for the ’16–’17 Chevrolet Camaro SS equipped with six-speed manual transmissions and for the ’14–’16 Chevrolet Corvette equipped with 6.2L LT1 V8 engines. The clutch features a 10.4-in. pressure plate and a 168-tooth, eight-bolt billet steel flywheel, and it utilizes the company’s patented centrifugal weight system that is said to enable it to withstand up to 1,600 lb.-ft. of torque in operation. GForce Engineering Booth #24233 GForce Engineering announced revisions to its product lineup, including upgrades to its flagship Outlaw performance half-shaft axle and the introduction of a new axle line: Renegade. The Outlaw CV half-shafts will be upgraded with polished CVs inside and out. The polishing is designed to reduce friction and heat buildup and to improve the CVs’ wear characteristics. Flowmaster Booth #22559 Holley announced the release of Flowmaster’s new FlowFX catback exhaust system designed for the ’00–’06 straight-through Jeep Wrangler TJ equipped with the 4.0L engine. The stainless-steel exhaust system utilizes a 2.5-in. FlowFX performance muffler, which mounts high in the frame rail just behind the factory catalytic converter and bolts to the factory flange. The 2.5-in. mandrel-bent tailpipe is tucked up high in the undercarriage, designed to protect it from damage when traversing rocky terrain. Centerforce Clutches Booth #23813 Centerforce announced its new high-inertia steel flywheel for ’05–’06 Jeep Wranglers equipped with 4.0L L6 engines. Centerforce developed the line of high-inertial flywheels to help the engine maintain rpm in rough and adverse terrain without stalling while also helping to recover some of the highway fuel economy lost from the addition of large off-road tires. Holley Performance Booth #22559 Holley announced the release of Anvil off-road spare tire spacers for the ’87–’17 Jeep Wrangler YJ/TJ/JK. The spacer relocates the spare tire 1.25 in. higher and 2.25 in. outward to allow plenty of extra clearance for larger wheel and tire combinations. The spacer accommodates a tire up to 33x12.50 in. in size and is designed to be a direct bolt-up using the existing mounting holes on the tailgate. John Hotchkis

SEMA PAC announced John Hotchkis of Hotchkis Performance as its new chairman. Hotchkis is no stranger to the industry. He founded his company—a manufacturer of performance suspension products—in 1992 and continues to serve as its president. While many are familiar with his tenure on SEMA’s Board of Directors, he was also awarded the Young Executives Network’s Vanguard Award in 2011 and previously served on the former Street Performance Council and the SEMA Cares Committee.

DEI announced two additions to the company’s inside sales department: Eric Baun and Will Farkas. Both will work with existing and new automotive and powersports accounts to grow sales of heat- and sound-control products in North America. Baun formerly worked as a senior production engineering technician with the rapid prototyping and manufacturing division of Thougus Products Co., located in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to that, he was a process technician at Thougus, working primarily in plastic injection molding. Farkas formerly worked for Porsche Beachwood (Beachwood, Ohio), preparing new and used cars for delivery and assisting with inventory. Prior to that position, while attending college, he worked for Wandering Washers in Cleveland as an automotive detailer and social-media manager, where he was successful in increasing business through client networking and social media strategies.

Dan McKinstry	Sean Sawyer

COMP Performance Group announced that Sean Sawyer joined the organization in the new role of business development manager, and Dan McKinstry was named the new director of supply-chain management. Sawyer will put his 25-plus years of industry experience to work by exploring new markets, identifying potential new customers, determining better ways to serve existing customers and ensuring the company’s relevance in the marketplace. McKinstry brings with him 25 years of supply-chain experience, both with mid- and large-size companies. His skills include creating and implementing new supply-chain processes, inventory optimization, executing statistical forecasting technology and designing centralized demand planning processes. McKinstry will oversee the team responsible for purchasing, master scheduling/planning/forecasting, inventory control and project management.

Josh McFarlin

AirPro Diagnostics announced the appointment of Josh McFarlin as vice president of strategic business operations. In his new position, McFarlin will be responsible for daily service operations, including multiple technician service centers and all field personnel. McFarlin joins AirPro Diagnostics from I-CAR, where he was director of curriculum and product development. He played a key role in the establishment of a five-year strategy that included an overhaul of the entire professional development program and also led the curriculum and product development team for I-CAR.

Heather Dorethy

Borowski Race Engines Inc. (BRE) announced that Heather Dorethy joined the team as a sales and marketing representative. She is an active drag racer raised in a family of drag racers. Her professional credits include sales and marketing roles with automotive aftermarket firms and Precision Turbo & Engine. She has been a brand ambassador for sponsors of NHRA events such as Mellow Yellow and MOPAR. Dorethy has been an active participant and panelist at numerous trade shows.

Siegfried Tigges, formed his own sales organization and consultancy called S.A.T. Sales and Consulting LLC. The company will begin by representing Speed Autoteile of Berlin, Germany, in the North American market and will also serve clients in the automotive, heavy-duty, mining and industrial markets. Tigges has experience and expertise as a sales, marketing and product-management executive in both the aftermarket and OEM sectors of the aforementioned markets. He spent more than 40 years with the Hella organization in a variety of key marketing and sales roles.

Denzel Lall

Continental named Denzel Lall sales technical training specialist. In that role, Lall will join Continental’s training team and be responsible for the organization, coordination and execution of presentations and demonstrations for both existing and potential customers in the Western United States. He will provide training for both the VDO REDI-Sensor and ATE Brake Systems brands. Lall brings a wealth of experience in tire and wheel service to the team.

Edelbrock has announced that Cary Redman has been appointed vice president of Edelbrock brand sales. Redman will guide Edelbrock’s field sales team while expanding customer relationships. Redman will also manage the customer and tech service departments. Prior to the promotion, he served as Edelbrock’s national sales manager. Additionally, as part of Edelbrock’s evolution and need for channel focus, Steve Whipple will become vice president of Edelbrock foundry and private-label sales. He has served Edelbrock for 20 years.

Lynn Parker, president of the Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation (AACF), has announced the appointment of David Young to its board of trustees. On July 12, 2019, SEMA members joined with car clubs, businesses and thousands of enthusiasts to celebrate the 10th annual Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD). A wide range of events was held in the United States and Canada to commemorate this special day. The celebration was designated with SEMA-requested companion resolutions introduced in the U.S. Congress by the co-chairs of the SEMA-supported Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus. U.S. Senate Resolution 271 was sponsored by Senate Co-Chairs Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) and Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), while House Co-Chairs Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL) and Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-GA) sponsored U.S. House of Representatives Resolution 108.

The resolutions acknowledged “that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States.” Lawmakers in states, counties and cities all over the United States and Canada followed Congress’s lead. The states of Louisiana, West Virginia and Wisconsin as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan adopted their own recognitions honoring the occasion.

More than 140 official events were held throughout the month of July to celebrate the classics of the past and the future. Those events included car club cruise-ins, open houses at SEMA-member companies, specialty shows at automobile museums and “drive your collector car to work” displays. Planning Time on the Show Floor: The average buyer attends the SEMA Show for about 16 hours. Over that time, buyers can interact with only a certain number of exhibitors, so making a plan that allows you to generate new business and interact with existing contacts is crucial. Construct a plan with a goal and a game plan before you arrive in Las Vegas to make efficient use of your time at the Show.

SEMA Industry Indicators: Economic Volatility Persists, But Consumers Remain on Strong Footing

The current U.S. cycle of economic growth enters its historic 11th year amid volatility. The next round of proposed tariffs targets $300 billion in Chinese imports that haven’t been affected yet. This is widely believed to impact products more commonly purchased by consumers. The labor market remains tight, wages are increasing and inflation remains low. Trade uncertainty is influencing both the automotive and specialty-equipment industries. Auto-parts imports from China are down roughly 11% over the last year. However, total auto-parts imports are up—driven by increases from Mexico and other Asian trading partners. New light-vehicle sales declined in July. Nearly 73% of these new light-vehicle sales came from pickups and SUVs—a record high. Likewise, in the coming months, gas prices are likely to decline driven by lower demand, increasing tensions and the close of the summer driving season.

12 Ways to Entice Customers to Provide Reviews

These days, 86% of customers read reviews for local businesses before they decide to hand over any cash, according to a 2018 study from BrightLocal.

Getting customers to take the time to write a glowing review about your business often takes some cajoling, but as most businesses know, the payback is substantial. Online reviews have become the de facto arbiters of what’s cool, what’s not, what’s worth paying for, and what’s worth running away from. It appears that they’ll only become more influential in the coming years.

These days, 86% of customers read reviews for local businesses before they decide to hand over any cash, according to a 2018 study from BrightLocal
(www.brightlocal.com/learn/local-consumer-review-survey). More than half—57%—said that they’d only do business with a company if it has four or more stars out of five. And generally, review readers need to see at least 10 online reviews before they’ll even consider doing business with you.

Not surprisingly, younger consumers are even more review-oriented, according to BrightLocal. A full 80% of 18–34-year-olds said that they have written online reviews. And 91% of 18–34-year-old consumers said that they trust online reviews as much as they do personal recommendations.

“Publishing the opinions of your customers is an important part of marketing your business,” said Doron Vermaat (https://blog.loopyloyalty.com), an online marketing consultant. “They can help with persuading new customers and even with boosting your site’s search-engine optimization.”

For any business sensitive to reviews (and that’s virtually all of us), there are a number of tactics you can use to cajole reviews from customers who are more than willing to give you a thumbs-up with just a bit of nudging. Below are some of the most effective of the lot—recommended by online marketing consultants and software companies that specialize in securing as many positive reviews as possible for their customers.

Ask for a Review While the Transaction Is Still Fresh: Many businesses send an automated email requesting a review of a product or service very quickly after the transaction is processed. The theory is that there’s a better chance a customer will have something to say while the memory of a purchase is still fresh.

Other businesses make the review request person-to-person, if possible, while the customer is still personally interacting with a company employee. That is especially effective if a customer has spontaneously waxed positive on how much he or she likes your goods or services.

Send a Personal “Thank You” and a Request for a Review: Other businesses take requests via email a step further by sending a personal email “thank you” to a customer, along with a request for a review. That can be especially effective if the customer has had personal contact with the company representative sending the email.

Email a Survey That Includes a Review Option: Some customers see survey requests on a company’s performance much easier to turn around than a general “What do you think about our service?” email.

With an emailed survey (or one that pops up on your website), you can start with a few questions that can be answered either yes or no, followed by a final question that requests customers to share their thoughts further. Essentially, after a customer has bought into interacting with a survey, it’s only a small step further to request some written thoughts.

Easy-to-use survey programs that you can leverage to solicit such reviews include SurveyMonkey (www.surveymonkey.com), SurveyGizmo (www.surveygizmo.com), Zoho Survey (www.zoho.com/survey), SoGo Survey (www.sogosurvey.com) and SurveyPlanet (https://surveyplanet.com).

Integrate Review Requests With All of Your Emails: Some businesses have had great results securing reviews by integrating review requests with all of their email correspondence, including inserting review requests in invoice emails, request for information emails, and even in the email signature file that is used by every employee at the company.

Reach Out on Social Media: On social networks, it’s nearly impossible to find someone without an opinion looking to get expressed, so soliciting reviews about your company there is a no-brainer. It’s also a good idea to ask customers to post photos and videos (if they have them) on social media along with their review. It’s amazing what people will take the time to come up with on social media if you simply make the request.

Set Up a “Review Station” at Your Brick-and-Mortar Location: If applicable, setting up a kiosk or a computer that customers can use to write a quick review can do wonders for gathering authentic feedback about a product or service. Be sure that the station is promoted with eye-catching signage and graphics.

Institute Review Requests as Part of the Sales Process: Businesses that formalize requests for reviews (i.e., training all staff to ask for reviews and aid in their processing) tend to generate more reviews as a result.

Offer Links to Major Review Sites on Your Website or in a Pop-Up Ad: Customers already accustomed to leaving reviews on companies will be much more likely to review your company if you invite them using a list of links that they can click on to leave a review with Yelp, Facebook or some other favorite review site. You can also program a pop-up ad to flash an invitation and similar links just before the customer is leaving your website.

Host a Reviews Domain on Your Website: Scores of solutions are available that enable you to host a reviews domain on your website—as well as enabling you to monitor reviews written about your company across the web. Packages include Trustpilot (www.trustpilot.com), Grade.us (www.grade.us) and PowerReviews (www.powerreviews.com). Establish a Presence on All Major Review Websites: Given that there’s a good chance major review sites such as Yelp (www.yelp.com) are already tracking your business, it makes sense to claim ownership of your business name there and respond to any reviews that happen to pop up. Most of the major review sites allow you to make that claim and also enable you to add a bit of branding to identify your business on their site.

“Just getting an account for your business on a review site is not enough,” said Jonas Sickler, marketing director for Reputation Management.com (www.reputationmanagement.com). “You’ll need to get set up with a complete profile. Develop a strong profile with photos, business details, and other information about your business. This tells customers that you’re active and interested in what they have to say. Some experts believe that review websites may favor businesses with complete profiles.”

Key sites to consider staking your claim on include the aforementioned Yelp as well as Foursquare (www.foursquare.com), Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com), Google (www.google.com), Citysearch (www.citysearch.com), YP.com (www.yellowpages.com), Facebook (www.facebook.com), Merchant Circle (www.merchantcircle.com), and Angie’s List (www.angieslist.com).

Consider Offering an Incentive in Exchange for a Review: While this can be tricky, many businesses offer a gift such as a free ebook or a discount on a future purchase or other gratuity in exchange for a review. Others offer to enter reviewers into a sweepstakes featuring a substantial giveaway to one lucky reviewer. The key here is to ensure that you’re not offering an incentive in exchange for a positive review. Instead, it must be an incentive for any review, positive or negative. Of course, before you do anything with incentives, run your plan past your attorney.

Make a Special Effort to Reach Out to Your Strongest Customers: All of these tactics will most likely produce the most desired result—a great review—with customers you’ve known a long time, repeat customers, or customers you know are extremely happy with what you’ve done for them.

“Identify your strongest customers,” Sickler advised. “Regular customers and brand ambassadors are likely to leave the most positive reviews. Since your relationship is already established, they’ll probably jump at the chance to provide a glowing testimony.”
