High school students from across the United States will square off in the final round of the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow engine-build competition at the 26th Annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show, December 12–14, 2013, in Orlando, Florida.

The 2012 National Championship of The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge build competition will be held at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, October 30–November 2. The following year, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge will hold its 2013 National Championship at the 26th Annual Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Trade Show, December 12–14, 2013, in Orlando, Florida, officials have announced.

Each year, hundreds of automotive technology students from high schools across the country take part in regional competitions to determine which teams can disassemble and reassemble a small-block Chevrolet engine with aftermarket components in the fastest time, with the top scorers advancing to the National Championship.

In 2013, a select group of teams with the best time will be invited to compete for scholarship money and industry recognition at the PRI Trade Show in Orlando.

"We are excited to have this special event, and all the fine young people who participate in it, at the 2013 PRI Trade Show. They represent the next generation of leaders in the racing industry, so we welcome the opportunity to have them compete in the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge National Championship," said John Kilroy, producer of the PRI Trade Show.

In addition to the established engine challenge events, the 2013 Hot Rodders of Tomorrow National Championship will feature an expanded competition format with three new contests:

  • Carburetor Rebuild Competition
  • Ring and Pinion Challenge
  • Cylinder Head Challenge

Since its inception in 2008 at the Race and Performance Expo in St. Charles, Illinois, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge has seen explosive growth in the number of competing teams. In the first year of competition, five teams with 25 students competed. By the end of the 2012 season, there were 112 teams with 560 students competing. The competition has been seen by more than 760,000 people and has raised more than $6 million in scholarship money donated by Ohio Technical College (OTC), the School of Automotive Machinists (SAM) and the University of Northwest Ohio (UNOH) over the past four years.

"This industry that we're in and we love is turning gray. It's getting older year after year," said Jim Bingham, chairman of Hot Rodders of Tomorrow and president/CEO of Winner's Circle Speed & Custom in Joliet, Illinois. "This is designed to be a program to bring young people inside this industry. This is about bringing them in, showing them that they can enjoy making a living in the high-performance field and, as a result, we get youth and talent inside our industry every year.

"We're looking forward to working with PRI in 2013," Bingham added. "It will also allow us to add more events because we're going to have a lot of space to work with. Plus, I believe Orlando is going to be a great place for the kids and families to visit."

Building on the success of its first year, the National Championship moved to Las Vegas in 2009, where three divisional winners and one wildcard entry competed in the inaugural "Showdown at SEMA."

The championship round has been held at the SEMA Show each year since, and in 2012, it will once again take place on the SEMA Show floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center, October 30–November 2, before moving to PRI in 2013.

"I absolutely love this event," said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. "It is amazing to me that Jim's activity has impacted so many young members of our industry over the years. We're pleased to be a part of the event and support this effort."

"This is just what our industry needed," added Vic Edelbrock. "It involves our youth, and gives them a focus that will help prepare them for careers in the performance automotive aftermarket."

Kicking off the countdown to next year's Championship, PRI will host a regional Hot Rodders of Tomorrow event during the 2012 PRI Trade Show, which takes place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 29–December 1, in the North/South Building of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Motorsports professionals are encouraged to preregister now for credentials for the 2012 PRI Trade Show. Register online today, at no charge.

Tom Gloy's Brizio Street Rods-built ’32 Ford roadster won the Goodguys 2012 Tank’s Hot Rod of the Year award at the Goodguys second WIX Filters Speedway Nationals.

Tom Gloy’s Roadster Wins Goodguys 2012 Tank’s Hot Rod of the Year Award
In a racing career that spanned more than 25 years, Tom Gloy collected a Trans Am World Championship and a Formula Atlantic title. He drove in six IndyCar races, including a start in the 1984 Indy 500 finishing 14th. Last weekend, he returned to Indianapolis Motor Speedway and, unlike the 1984 trip, found himself all alone in the winner’s circle this time around. His Brizio Street Rods-built ’32 Ford roadster won the Goodguys 2012 Tank’s Hot Rod of the Year award at the Goodguys second WIX Filters Speedway Nationals.

Gloy’s low-flying roadster was born during a conversation with Roy Brizio a few years back as the two drove to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Gloy wanted a channeled ’32 Ford roadster but Brizio cautioned “Channeled ’32 Fords aren’t very comfortable and when channeled, they can look too wide.” He also told Gloy how the driver often “sat up too high” in the channeled cars he’d seen over the years. So that was the challenge—to build a channeled, traditionally styled roadster in which Gloy could sit low and drive fast.

To redesign the car’s front end, Brizio and his build team narrowed the cowl, grille and windshield. To get Gloy down low in the seat, the floorboards were radically lowered, more so than any other hot rod to roll out of Brizio’s South San Francisco stable. Out back, the rear quarters were filled and smoothed, and the rear wheels tucked tightly against the channeled body.

The custom Brizio chassis features torsion bar suspension from Moal Coachbuilders and a classic hot-rod rake courtesy of the chromed Magnum 5-in. dropped axle. Custom-made 18- and 16-in. ET knockoff wheels are enhanced with custom-machined caliper brackets designed to fill the backside of the wheels (inspired by Bonneville-style Moon discs). The 302-in., Hilborn EFI Ford crate motor and Tremec five-speed get the roadster up to speed in a hurry then stops on a dime courtesy of Wilwood brakes.

Bay-area body and paint specialist Darryl Hollenbeck of Vintage Color Studio spent many hours perfecting the car’s classic finish—mid ’50s Porsche blue, which contrasts the red leather interior stitched by Sid Chavers.

Gloy, who now lives near Lake Tahoe, got the channeled Bonneville-inspired roadster he dreamed of and a talented team of Bay Area craftsmen, led by Brizio, pulled off the challenge of getting it to sit and look just right. Gloy drove the car more than 2,000 miles from his home in Nevada to Indianapolis, this time with a victorious result.

The top-five finalists for the Goodguys 2012 Tank’s Hot Rod of the Year award included: Keith Hill, Bixby, Oklahoma (’34 Ford); Tom Gloy, Incline Village, Nevada (’32 Ford); Tim Kirby, Fountain Hills, Arizona (’33 Ford); Henry Richards, Mansfield, Ohio (’32 Ford); and Larry Christensen, Arvada, Colorado (’32 Ford).

The team at Brenda Priddy & Co. recently spotted the upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder taking advantage of the still-triple-digit temperatures recently in the United States. Priddy reports that the hybrid super car recently spent a few days in the southwestern part of the country.

While an official introduction is some time away, Priddy tells us that select journalists are already driving similar prototypes in Germany. However, their words and photos are under strict embargo, Priddy's images are not.

The team says that the 918 Spyder prototypes are still a bit rough around the edges, but this is currently the closest anyone has gotten to the vehicle here in the United States.

The 2012 Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Reception will include a live auction to support SEMA Cares and increase awareness for the third-annual HRIA Pinewood Builder’s Challenge. Fifteen well-known builders created one-of-a-kind miniature hot rods in the style of Pinewood derby cars. The cars were raced at the annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Races in Pomona, California. These cars will be on display at the annual SEMA Show and then 12 will be placed on eBay for auction from October 30–November 8, and three will be auctioned live. All proceeds from the auction will go to support SEMA Cares and its two children’s charities—Childhelp and Victory Junction.

Derek White and Street Vizions won their third consecutive race and will highlight the first-ever Live Auction to promote these miniature hot rods. The other two builds included in the live auction will be Spanky’s (Best Engineered) and Greening Auto Co. (Best in Show). The live auction will take place Wednesday evening, October 31, during the HRIA reception emceed by industry icon Dave McClelleand.

Please RSVP today for this exclusive event and be prepared to bid!

A word with Derek White of Street Vizions:

Describe the inspirations behind the design of your pinewood car.

We wanted to build something different this year. Also, we wanted a car that would be recognizable to any hot-rod or car enthusiast. The design is like a T-bucket and is modeled after the Red Baron.

Describe some of the materials and resources you used to build your car.

We used pinewood to create the body and it sits on a hand-made aluminum chassis.

Why is it important for you to participate in the Pinewood Challenge?

We like entering the Pinewood Builder's Race because it is a great organization that gives back to charity. Working with NASCAR for so many years and being involved with many charities, we always enjoy giving back something and supporting worthwhile causes.

Innovation and creativity serve as the lifeblood for businesses and industries alike, offering the competitive edge necessary to enhance growth and profit. Businesses that have the foresight to harness those advantages through rethinking products, services, processes and business models are able to materialize the greatest level of differentiation between the remainder of the market in the eyes of your customer. The SEMA Show will enable you to explore and expand how your business serves its customer base, and the Repairer Driven Education (RDE) is designed to teach you how other successful market leaders harness innovation and creativity as an integral part of their business success.

So how does innovation prosper in the collision-repair industry, and how can you foster innovation as a core value that shapes the framework of your business?

On Friday, November 2, at 10:00 a.m., the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) will feature its second RDE headline presentation, "Game Changers - Innovation Forum." This discussion will let you into a very personal discussion amongst well-recognized innovators and market leaders who explore the fundamentals of how they approach innovative thought, and how that translates into workable business models and ideas. Join Randy Stabler (Pride Auto Body, Van Nuys, California), Michael Giarrizzo Jr. (DCR Systems, Mentor, Ohio), Scott Biggs (Assured Performance Network, Irvine, California) and Gary Wano, Jr. (GW & Son Auto Body, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) for what will be one of the most candid dissections of the heart of business ideas.

While the SEMA Show remains the biggest showcase of automotive innovation and business opportunity, this RDE session will showcase the inner mind of innovation and the root of four unique success stories.

"I think attendees are going to be in for a mind-stretching discussion on the thought processes and general knowledge that go into changing one's business mindset," Giarrizzo said.

A complete listing of all RDE sessions can be found at www.semashow.com/scrs.
